Seems like that's pretty much every race thread these days. And way to go, Big Mac. Although it wasn't exactly a classic upset (a Cup driver winning in a car that was 3rd in points last year), it's always nice to see someone other than Busch, Edwards, or Keselowski win a Nationwide race. 5. When the Cup drivers dominate a companion race weekend, the quality of racing sucks. This is why I was sad to see Memphis, Pikes Peak, Myrtle Beach, etc. dropped from the Busch/Nationwide schedule. After 2000, the Busch Series began the nosedive and completely jumped the shark around 2005. 8. 18fan posted: 09.05.2010 - 2:17 am Rate this comment: (1) (1) Great win for Jaime, hopefully we can have a repeat of this tomorrow, since McMurray outscored Bowyer by 69 in this race. To defend Kyle on the last restart, he got screwed when Brad owned Josh Wise on the restart and Jaime was behind Brad so he shot into second and quickly passed Brad on fresher tires, but Jaime did a great job of holding off Kyle's challenge and then put enough distance on the #18 that Kyle's last ditch charge came up short. Clean air was going to mean nothing on older tires at Atlanta, so I don't know what the #22 team was thinking there. They've been really smart on their calls this year, just not that one. First race this year that Kyle has lost after leading the most laps, after all the ones he lost last year. Kasey Kahne was driving his car extremely sideways on the first run while leading, it was pretty cool to watch. 4 cars out of the race by lap 3, pathetic. If I counted right there were 14 Cup drivers in this race. I think Cup drivers should be allowed to run no more than one Truck race and no more than 15 Nationwide races per season. They also must be companion races and they must own their own car. In my system, if a driver goes over one or both of the limits, they are ineligible for the Chase no matter where they finish in points in the first 26 races. I'll use Kyle Busch as the example for my system. He would've already exceeded the Truck limit with 10 starts, and since he has run all 19 companion races thus far (I count ORP as a companion since its so close to Indy), plus he will run the 20th companion at Richmond. In addition he ran the first Nashville race and Iowa, so he will be at 22 NW races before race 26 of the Cup season. Therefore, even if he was 3rd in points after next weeks Cup race at Richmond, the position he is in currently, he would be ineligible for the Chase. In 2010, this would also eliminate Harvick and Edwards, so whoever finished 13th, 14th, and 15th would make the Chase and Harvick, Busch, and Edwards would race for 13th. Logano and Sadler would also be ineligible for the Chase (Logano has run 18 NW races and Sadler has run 6 Truck races.) This rule would apply to every driver who leaves California in the spring (since that is race 5 next year) in the top 35 in OP. Please read it carefully, it might confuse you at first, but I believe this system would at least cut down the problem that we've had Cup drivers win 24 of 26 Nationwide races and 8 of 18 Truck races. Please leave feedback about my suggested system and feel free to post your own system to cut down the #1 problem in NASCAR right now, that it is the only sport that allows it "major leaguers" to compete in "minor league" events whenever they want, without being demoted or in rehab. 9. 18fan posted: 09.05.2010 - 2:20 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Jarrettfan88, I completely agree with you, but those tracks would still get Cup drivers in the races and winning them since these guys love to go back and forth between racetracks. That is why I believe NASCAR needs some major league restrictions on the number of races these Cup drivers run in the lower series. 10. James-O-Matic posted: 09.05.2010 - 2:37 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) A.B.B. Anyone but Busch. Go McMurray. About time Busch goes outrun so he cant complain. Busch is going to break the single season record for most wins in a nationwide season but the longer it takes the better. 11. Jarrettfan88 posted: 09.05.2010 - 3:23 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 18fan, The Cup drivers used to run at the Busch only tracks and win occasionally, prior to 2005. Mark Martin won a few non-Cup track races before piloting that #60 Winn-Dixie Ford for Roush Racing from 92'-00'. I have no problem with limiting the Cup drivers to 18 races per Cup driver and have 12 per race. Your suggestions are interesting. However, any change in the Nationwide-whacker status quo is desperately needed for 2011. 13. John Royal posted: 09.05.2010 - 5:16 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) Make the drivers fix their own car, seek for a sponsors, and drive the hauler to the races. Maybe that cuts some of the busch/truckwhacking. Nationwide should also have completely different schedule and tracks like in 80's. Companion races would be special occurrences, not regular. 14. ii posted: 09.05.2010 - 6:46 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 18fan, I counted 16, if Sorenson and Green count. 8 of top 10 Cup regulars, which lets 18fan's rule come in play, except only 3 Nationwide events. If Leffler didn't get let out of Cup by Ganassi, than it would be even worse. Great run for Mike Bliss and David Gilliland (one of the Cup regulars, but not talented since the 500 Yates front row sweep in '07), and Gilliland supposed to be a start-and-park like Kevin Hamlin. Bad luck for Braun Racing, 3 cars had problems, including Kahne's pole-winning car (again). Oh, and why do you think they put cameras in Townley and Mike Wallace's cars and always have that "Hollywood" Armstrong guy have his camera in the pits, cup (if I remember, on a start-and-park so there wouldn't be a point) or Nationwide? I have an amazing rule for Truck, Nationwide, and Cup. There is no top-25, top 30, top 35 in owner points rule, and all the cars that are eligible to start, start. If the track is a half-mile (like Martinsville), the cars that are at least 2 mph slower than the pole AND outside the top 25 in points AND aren't start-and-parks or cars that are at least 10 mph slower (they DNQ) are a lap ahead. All wrecked cars DNQ. If the track is a mile to a mile and a third (Nashville, Dover, etc.), the cars that are at least 3 mph slower than the pole AND outside the top 30 in points INCLUDING start-and-parks and not including cars that are at least 15 mph slower (they DNQ) are a lap ahead. If the track is a 1.334 mile-1.75-mile track (Atlanta, Charlotte, etc.), the cars that are at least 4 mph slower than the pole AND outside the top 20 in points AND aren't start and parks or cars that are at least 15 mph slower (they DNQ) are a lap ahead. All wrecked cars DNQ. If the track is an oval between 1.76 and 2.5 miles that isn't a restrictor plate (Indy, Michigan), the cars that are at least 5 mph slower than the pole AND outside the top 30 in points AND aren't start and parks or cars that are at least 20 mph slower (they DNQ) are a lap ahead. All wrecked cars DNQ. If the track is a restrictor-plate track for Cup (Daytona, Talladega), the cars that are at least 4 mph slower than the pole AND outside the top 40 in points INCLUDING start and parks and not including cars that are at least 10 mph slower (they DNQ) are a lap ahead. If the track is a road course (Road America, Watkins Glen, etc.), the cars that are at least 10 mph slower avg. speed than the pole AND outside the top 30 in points (not including road-course regulars) AND aren't start-and-parks or cars that are at least 20 mph slower (they DNQ except road-course regulars) are a lap ahead. All wrecked cars DNQ. All races are televised by Fox Sports like it is now (DW, MacReynolds, Hammond, all the pit reporters, etc.), and all races have at least 35 people, if not, the race is rescheduled and the purse is $100,000 bigger for Truck, $300,000 bigger for Nationwide, $600,000 bigger for regular Cup races, and $1,000,000 bigger for the Daytona 500. Note- This does not include non-Points races. 16. DaleSrFanForever posted: 09.05.2010 - 9:17 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I thought this race was kinda interesting with the limited tires and strategy revolving around that. Unfortunately it never panned out that way. I was hoping for a race like that one in Pikes Peak where Biffle saved a set of tires then blasted past everyone at the end after a late caution. That is what the #22 team was counting on. Props to them for going for wins and not points racing (although when you have a 350+ lead with 10 races left, that isn't much of a stretch), but I thought it was way too late in the race to do that. But I like the "go for it" mentality they have. I would like to see what Paul Wolfe could do with the #12 Cup team. Since the #22 pretty much has the NWide title locked up (yay I guess), why not let him take over for the last races in Cup? What's the worst that can happen? No top 10 finishes? They already don't have any and are invisible in Cup races. Go ahead and get a head start on 2011. Congrats to Jamie. I'm ok with Cup drivers like him that only run about 10 NWide races per year (although he ran significantly more in the previous years). I was so glad to see him just flat out beat Kyle. Of course it wasn't Kyle's fault, his team tried to get "cute" and not put gas in the car for weight purposes. Since he's one of the all time greats, he needs gas in his car for it to be perfect so he can win. Oh wait, that is the exact opposite of an all time great. And a special thanks to Rusty for his incredible wisdom that he gave to us in the pre-race. After Big Brad did everything except proclaim that Kyle Busch is God in a driving suit, Rusty, when telling us what the Atlanta track was gonna do, said "These changing lanes are gonna change a lot". Thanks Rusty. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't know what the hell is going on out there. The other pre-race highlight (and this is a real one): Matt and Katie Kenseth standing for the National Anthem with their baby daughter, and Katie trying to put their baby's hat back on, to which she was having none of it, swatting it away. Do we have Girl Matt the Brat? That was hilarious. Matt is awesome and so is his daughter. 17. Kirk posted: 09.05.2010 - 9:25 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Since we're throwing around rules changes, my solution is really simple. Any driver in the top 35 in Cup points in a given year can run a maximum of 45 combined Cup/Nationwide/Truck races the next year. This would still allow one "transition" year where a driver could run for a Nationwide title and start a Cup career (like Keselowski has). After that first year, though, they'd have to become a part-time Nationwide driver. Also, congrats to McMurray. He's having a career year. 18. DaleSrFanForever posted: 09.05.2010 - 9:44 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 18fan, I like the idea. I'm OK with 15 races since that is less than half the schedule. The biggest thing, something I mentioned earlier, I would like to see NASCAR madate which races Cup guys are eligible to run so half of the Cup drivers don't take some of the races, anf half take a different 15 races, because the end result would still be the same: Cup guys winning everything. This Series needs it's own identity. Plus it would force people like Kyle, Kevin, and Carl to focus almost strictly on the Cup Series and dethroning JJ as the undisputed Lord and Ruler of Cup (even if he doesn't win the title this year, and even if he doesn't win another race, he still will have five wins for the year, 50+ in the last 9 years, and 4 Cups in the bank. This is the JJ Era and will be for a while). Since they each have the talent and equipment to do so, this should boost the Cup Series as well, which it also needs. Let's face it, for all of his unquestionable greatness, JJ's public persona is as interesting as a piece of lumber or some other inanimate piece of hardware. I guess it's fitting that Lowe's is his sponsor. I wonder if, when he is doing appearances at Lowe's stores, if some customers attempt to purchase him, not realizing he actually has a pulse. When he does interviews, I keep half expecting the local medical examiner to throw a sheet over him and wheel his corpse out. "Did I make it in before DaleSrFanForever and Cooper come into complain about everyone talking about Kyle Busch, while they themselves talk about Kyle Busch over and over?" I don't care if people talk about him, I just care when they overinflate him and insult NASCAR's past by calling him an all time great, or say that he is accomplishing greatness. Tell it like it is: He is an insanely talented driver that puts his talent to great use in lower Series against lesser competition in much lesser funded cars or Trucks, but underachieves on the big stage (Cup, especially the cha$e) when considering his talent and equipment, due in a large part to his focus and energies being diverted to lesser Series which, regardless what the media and buffoons like Michael Waltrip say, don't advance his standing as a racer in any way. He is his own worst enemy, completely packs it in when things go slightly wrong, and is horrible for his team. Again, he has had a good Cup career. 19 wins in slighly less than six seasons is good. That rate puts him above most drivers in Cup (WAY below JJ, but still). But considering his talent and equipment, he should be putting up "Gordon numbers". Multiple double digit win season in CUP, multiple CUP championships, and for the love of God, more than ONE points finish better than 9th, and more than ONE cha$e victory in 20 starts. 19. Kyle Busch 12 Wins, Kevin Harvick 4 Wins, Another Cup Guy 2 Wins. That leaves 7 races for non cup guys. Great. Bill Fran$e thought. Ok, can I turn the truck series into the nationwide joke of a series, or should I keep it, as the great racing that the truck series is... and make a little less money. Let's turn it into the nation series! I think you have cup guys have a limit of 15 races in the nationwide series and 10 races in the camping world truck series. That's perfect. The last guy to win a nationwide/busch championship in non cup equipment I believe was Jeff Green in 2000. Make Gibbs, Roush etc. have one non developmental or non cup guy race a full season in their equipment. That way, we could see guys like Mike Bliss, and Jason Keller race for a championship. How do I know you didn't start watching racing until after 1993? A dumb comment like that. When Davey died, all anyone on TV wanted to talk about was the wasted potential of a young driver who clearly was going to win a championship someday, and a lot more races, just like his dad. And why did they say that? Because he was winning a lot of Cup races at a young age, like Kyle Busch. I have a hard time believing that many people on these forums are old enough to even remember Dale Earnhardt's last championship, let alone old enough to remember the highlights of the career of Davey Allison. It's kinda funny actually, watching all of you act like you know what you're talking when it comes to NASCAR history, and who is a better driver than who when the only "greats" you know are Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson. 30. rw posted: 09.05.2010 - 4:10 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Kyle has the same number of wins in about the same amount of time as Davey Allison, but since Davey didn't run very many Busch races nobody talked about Davey in the same sentence as Petty, Pearson, Cale, and Bobby like they are with Kyle" Why would you even put Kyle in the same sentence as those greats? Seriously! The modern era of Nascar began in 1972, and Kyle only has like 19 Cup wins while the rest of those guys have like 60-70 wins to their credit in CUP RACING not any other league, why in the hell is everyone saying he's in the statment of a legend?
