Extreme sports legend/rally racer Travis Pastrana announced in the week leading up to this race he would move from the Subaru rally team to Michael Waltrip Racing to run NASCAR in 2011. To get the word out MWR entered their #00 with a yellow Travis Pastrana paint job in this race, complete with a cartoony version of Pastrana painted on the side. The tribute to the Nitro Circus star didn't last however as driver Martin Truex Jr backed it in the wall and noticably shortened it up. 2. If he could have had this kind of speed throughout the season, he would have actually been a serious championship threat. This is his 4th win at Phoenix, and his third straight in this race. Also the first time this season that he led the most laps at a track that wasn't a road course. First time that Kyle finished outside the top 10 since a crash at Talladega in April. 10th(!) DNF of the year for Jason Leffler, half of those have come due to mechanical problems. 4. 18fan posted: 11.13.2010 - 11:35 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I knew this race was on, and I intentionally didn't watch it and I don't think I missed much. 5. Only cup guys led the whole race, if you include the start-and-park Raines and replacement for the 9 car Almirola. Another nice second-half-of-the-year run for Stenhouse; another completely disturbing run for Danica that proves that she has no talent at all and anyone can drive IndyCars. 10. Yeah, totally valid argument. I suppose if we were to put you in the starting line up of the LA Lakers, and you weren't out scoring Kobe Bryant in your first 14 games, you'd be completely disturbing too. Gotta love NASCAR Fans with no real concept of the actual difficulty of driving a race car. Seriously dude, Danica has made exactly FOURTEEN starts in a Stock Car and they have been on some of the more difficult courses in NASCAR (Gateway, Phoenix, Dover etc.). Much like ANY other skill, there is a definite learning curve. There's a reason why most drivers spend YEARS on the short tracks before making it to NASCAR, they have to learn the fundamentals of driving these vehicles. Now Danica is coming from IndyCar to NASCAR. There is literally NOTHING you can carry over driving-wise from the open wheeled cars to NASCAR, other than the fact that you make left turns. I am as resentful as anyone about the overwhelming attention Danica is getting in the Nationwide races, however, I also am aware of the fact that she ISN'T GOING TO BE THE NEXT JEFF GORDON IN LESS THAN 14 RACES!!! Hopefully those anti-Danica drivers can wrap your brains around the concept of how difficult what she's doing is, and then kindly shut up. "I hope Kennedy puts that cow head on in the wall if he drives next weekend. Ooo she's sooooo scary!!! Get out of NASCAR PLEASE!!!!" You don't even deserve to watch auto racing with an attitude like that. 12. But Cole Whitt just jumped in a well funded NWide car for his first ever start, and did VERY respectable. That is all we are looking for at this point: a Top 20 finish, a lead lap finish, not running in the back. Even in her best run, the 2nd Cali race, she got lapped, took advantage of the wave around, and then put herself in a bad situation. I understand your point, but I think you think we have a different standard for her. Correct me if I'm wrong. But anybody else probably would have been canned by now. Look at how JR Motorsports handled Mark McFarland and Shane Huffman. But I must say, I put a lot of the blame for this situation on Kelley and JR Motorsports (she's the one who really runs that company while her brother is out getting drunk and collecting STDs). Calling the way they prepared her for NASCAR half assed is an insult to people like me that half ass their way through things like school projects. They never bothered to teach her ANYTHING about NASCAR. That just shows you all they were looking at was $$$$. Stenhouse and Scott brought home good finishes too. Also a shout out to Cole Whitt for scoring a top-15 in his first Nationwide race. Talon64 posted: 11.15.2010 - 4:57 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "If he could have had this kind of speed throughout the season, he would have actually been a serious championship threat." Late season surges has been his MO in the Nationwide Series the last few years; in the last 10 races of each of the last 3 years, Carl has 10 wins for a .333% winning percentage in those races. In 2009 and 2010 it came far too few and far too late for the championship but he almost won it in 2008. The last 3 years it's been mid-season CC changes that sparked the #60 team, but 2008 was the only year that it helped him to contend for the championship. Anyone else find it ironic that it was Justin Allgaier and Aric Almirola who was having a beef on the track? Allgaier, who's driving for HMS-supported Turner Motorsports next year? Almirola, who's driving for what's essentially HMS in Nationwide? The two drivers who could find themselves fighting it out to replace Dale Jr. at HMS when Dale's contract runs out? Although the other could still find themselves in a 3rd SHR car too if it's plausible. 22. Talon64 posted: 11.15.2010 - 5:16 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Carl Edwards picks up his 29th career Nationwide win, putting him 2 back of Jack Ingram for 4th on the all time list. Carl's had at least 4 wins in every season he's competed in Nationwide dating back to 2005. Kevin Harvick finishes 2nd for the 3rd straight NNS race at Phoenix. Joey Logano extends his top 10 streak in Nationwide to 21 races; he has 23 top tens in 24 starts, giving him a series-best 4.8 average finish. Brad Keselowski's 25th top five ties Kyle Busch's series record. He can break it with a top five at Homestead. He ties his total in top tens from last season (28) and could surpass that at Homestead too. "Sorenson has 21 Top 10s!?" In only 27 starts, ranking him 6th this season. If he's run the full season he would've been 4th in the standings, 12 points ahead of Justin Allgaier. Aric Almirola gets his 10th career top ten in 38 Nationwide starts. It's his 4th top ten in 7 starts this season for JR Motorsports (all in 5 starts in the #88 he'll be driving full time in 2011). Colin Braun was the highest-finishing rookie in the race, finishing 7th for his 5th top 10 of the season and first in his last 5 starts. Justin Allgaier is the 7th driver this year to record 20 top tens but the only Nationwide regular (who didn't use to be a full time Cup driver, i.e. Sorenson). Ricky Stenhouse gets his 2010 rookie-best 7th top ten of the season. Ricky has an 8 point lead in the ROTY standings over Brian Scott heading into the final race. Ricky can become the 5th Roush driver to win Nationwide ROTY (Ragan, O'Quinn, Edwards, Biffle), all within the last 10 seasons. Steve Wallace finishes 10th for the 5th time this season. 11 of his 29 career top tens have been 10th place finishes, with only 10 being 7th or better. Trevor Bayne gets his 5th top 20 finish in 6 starts with Roush Racing, although 5 of them have been in a 5th car, the #17. His best finish with Roush was 11th when he drove the #16 at Gateway. Cole Whitt finishes 15th in his Nationwide debut. He finished 4th in the K&N Pro East standings as a rookie this season with 3 runner-up finishes, 6 top fives, 2 poles and 6 races led in 10 starts. 23. Talon64 posted: 11.16.2010 - 8:02 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "yet she is doing well enough for what 10+ plus starts?" These aren't 100% fair comparisons because they were also had or were getting experience in Cup but... Dario Franchitti had 1 top five, 2 top tens and a 16.25 average finish in his first 12 Nationwide starts. Patrick Carpentier has 7 oval starts since 2007 with 2 top tens, 5 top 20 finishes and a 20.9 average finish. He's the most recent Cup Series rookie to win a pole, Loudon in 2008, and that year he had 4 top 20 finishes in 24 starts. AJ Allmendinger had 2 top 20 finishes and a 22.3 average finish in 7 Nationwide starts in 2007, his rookie Cup season. In his first 12 Nationwide starts Sam Hornish Jr. had 2 top 20 finishes (best finish of 15th) and an average finish of 31.7. Although he had 4 top 20 finishes in his next 7 starts. So on paper, Danica's results aren't THAT terrible compared to the people who've recently made the switch before her. But the #7 team is 16th in the owners standings, with 6 top tens in it's 23 races without Danica (2 in 9 starts with Josh Wise, who wasn't tearing it up in NASCAR but has looked really good in the #7 this season). So on that perspective her results still aren't good. 29. irony posted: 11.16.2010 - 11:03 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Tony Stewart's first season in NW: avg finish 26.4, 2 DNQs. 30. I was discussing with a friend prior to Danica moving to NASCAR that she should spend at least a year racing late models in a less intense environment just to build a foundation for herself. She's younger than most of the open wheel drivers who came to NASCAR, she'd have the time. But putting her in the Nationwide series with only one ARCA race to her credit was a horrible idea. 31. awesomegordonfan posted: 11.17.2010 - 6:48 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "So even if JR Motorsports dumped her, she'd have no problem finding a ride a'la Paul Menard and Kevin Conway." a. There's nothing you can take from one that would apply to other for the most part, so more NASCAR experience is a big deal. "Dinger maybe, but Scott was not thrown to the wolves. Red Bull bought him rides in ARCA, Trucks and Busch for him to develop, and he was pretty competitive in each of them. He very nearly won the ARCA Series Championship (and won four races, including one at one of the most challenging short tracks in America), won a Truck Series race and finished top ten in more than half the races, and had eight top tens in 13 Nationwide starts. Those were impressive stats for a new driver... Not quite sure what went wrong with his Cup career, but I'd believe Red Bull would be getting Cole Whitt as much experience as possible to make sure he doesn't end up like Scott Speed. Though I believe with the right team, Scott Speed could get a lot better, and he's such a dynamic personality I'd like to see him do well. 37. awesomegordonfan posted: 11.19.2010 - 6:03 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Cfob, what do you mean about a ride in general?
