First race for Go Canada Racing. Mikey Kyle scores his best career finish in Nationwide (in two races). Nine start-and-parkers... ...and Michael Annett being 10th in points is just sad. 2. 18fan posted: 04.23.2011 - 10:09 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) What a surprise, Cup drivers dominate a lower series race. Since now the Cup drivers run the standalone races, there is really no point to watch this series. 3. 00andJoe posted: 04.23.2011 - 10:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Actually, I mind the Cup drivers running the standalones less than I do them running companion events. In standalones, the Cup drives don't get an unfair advantage from "extra" (Cup) practice sessions, and it lets fans in smaller markets get a chance to meet the higher-profile drivers. Best to go with the plan I proposed in the comments a few races ago, though: "Any driver in the top 35 in drivers' points in a series is not allowed to compete in more than 5 races combined in series 'lower' than the series the driver is in the top 35 in points in. "Exceptions: "1. If a driver is not currently employed as a driver in the series he is in the top 35 in points in. "2. If a driver has rookie status in the highest-level series he is in the top 35 in points in. "3. If a driver is replacing an injured driver in a lower-level series on a one-race basis, the race will not count against his 5 race quota." (2, for instance, would allow a Cup rookie to also run a full BGN season, a la Harvick in 2001 or Bayne this year if he was collecting Cup points.) 4. I am a little suprised to see Carl was the one who dominated instead of Kyle. Does the laps led indicate how good he was? One thing that stands out is Austin Dillon, good to see him get a good finish. He's a guy with a future. I see him as a replacement for Jeff Burton in the #31 eventually. Glad RCR is being patient with him and letting him run a couple years of trucks then Nationwide next year, rather than just rush him into Cup like a lot of guys. 5. Even with a horrible cast around him (Marty Ried and Daugherty) he still gave insightful analysis. ESPN, please ditch DJ and put Craven in his spot. LOSER: Us racing fans. Because they will never replace DJ with Craven because Ricky doesn't have the name power. WINNER: Austin Dillon's post race shirt. That was an Old School Earnhardt shirt, before racing merchandise was really refined. It looked just like the shirts I wore when I was 6 or 7. LOSER: Kenny Wallace constantly reminding us he has 9 NWide wins, none since '01. That is just sad. When you have to speak for your stats, it just makes you look weak. WINNER: The guy in the shirt in the stands when Carl went in, with the NASCAR logo, only it said "FART" instead. That cracked me up. LOSER: Carl Edwards' "rabid fanbase". He jumped into the crowd, and about 10 people came to be around him. Pitiful. Compare that to the time Tony Stewart climbed the fence (I think this was at a Daytona summer race), came down the other side and damn near got trampled. WINNER: Jimmie Johnson. While he was relaxing somewhere on his week off, probably getting ready for Easter with his daughter, kicking back a few cold ones with his weird Southern Cal buddies, and neatly trimming his beard (where are you JJNTB?) two of his main competitors in Cup, and one guy he laps twice a race finished 1-2-3 in this race, not taking the chance to rest their minds. LOSER: The Nationwide Series. Even on "stand alone" weekends it is more of the same. By banning Cup guys from getting points, but still letting them run all the races, pretending they are in the Cup Series racing for something truly important, not just who gets to be "best of the rest" like they are actually doing in Cup, we are going to have the weakest NWide champ since Clint Bowyer's sham of an '08 title. For the record, there is "Jimmie Johnson" and everyone else in Cup is "the rest". 6. Cooper posted: 04.23.2011 - 10:36 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I thought it was good racing. The battle between Keselowski/Busch/Edwards was very entertaining. I just wish these three could carry their battles for the lead into the main event on Sunday. Unfortunately B-Rad is running 20th while Edwards and Busch are running 5th. One day Brad will get there. Maybe Brad should grow a nicely trimmed beard. 7. 18fan posted: 04.23.2011 - 10:45 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) DSFF, I think Reid and Petree should be taken out of the booth before DJ, but those are relatively low standards and I would like to see him go too, but they better not let Rusty anywhere near the booth, because he makes all three of them look amazing. 8. jensenators posted: 04.23.2011 - 10:52 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) austin dillon gets his 2nd top 10 in 8 career starts. his best finish since finishing 4th at memphis in 2008. 9. Thank you Harvick for doing what's right and allowing Austin to run the race. It's pathetic when drivers aren't able to shine and develop because a couple guys have to stoop down to win...I'm all for the Cup guys running at Daytona, Talladega, and a couple other tracks like Charlotte and Atlanta...but no cup guys should be allowed to run at the stand-alone events or more than like 10 races. I know I've heard it here before but for Kyle, Carl, and Kevin, the Nationwide Series is the "Jimmie Johnson Recovery Tour" or something along those lines 11. nascarfreak99 posted: 04.23.2011 - 11:33 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Actually, I think if you just park from the series Carl, Kyle, Brad, Joey, and Kevin [Harvick], and replace them with maybe [respectively], Colin Braun, Darrell Wallace Jr., Parker Kligerman, Ryan Truex, and Austin Dillon; Then you've got on hell of a series going on with the right balance of new developmental drivers and former Cup drivers. 12. You heard it here first!!!! 34 of the 35 Nationwide Series races WILL BE WON BY CUP DRIVERS! Where is the love for Dale Jarrett in the booth? Ricky Craven would be a great full-time Nationwide booth commentator and fill-in for DJ in a few ABC/ESPN Cup races. His sharp, relatively unbiased analysis is on point. I would have DJ/Craven for ABC/ESPN Cup race broadcasts, instead of the DJ/Rusty combination. However, I think Rusty should stay with Allen Bestwick and Brad in the Speedbooth. And were it not for Dale Jr last week, Jimmie would still be winless a quarter of the way into a season. Like I said on the truck page, I don't think Nashville will keep two Cup and Truck dates for next year. A weak attendance and a lack of a title sponsor will do that. I'm a bit disappointed in Aric Almirola's season to date, yes he's very much in the championship hunt but you would expect him to run in the top 5 more often with Cup regulars. 17. I know the Cup Series is off this weekend, but it's still a bummer that Edwards, Busch, Brad K and Logano managed to sweep the top four spots in what's supposed to be a Nationwide regular stand-alone race. I am starting to think that NASCAR needed to also limit how many races full-time Cup drivers can run in the lower tier series. At least Harvick didn't run this race. 22. But him not racing will just open the door for a Carl or Brad win rather than a Nationwide regular win. The Only way to fix the old, "Bushwacker" situation, is to only allow drivers to compete in more than 10 races in 1 series. That should allow 2/3'ds of most of the races to be free, from sprint cup drivers, as well as openning up rides for younger/new drivers. Gives these guys oppertunities to make a real name for themselves in their own series. It could become a real developement series, by putting these guys in some good rides again. If Carl, Kyle, Kevin, and Brad can only run 10 races, somebody's gotta fill their seats, and we might see somebody win a race besides the cup guys. The points they accumulate won't matter, since they can only run 10 races anyway. Somebody send, "this", to Brian France & Mike Helton. 29. dUDE gUY posted: 04.24.2011 - 11:05 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Another Cup Lite race I'm glad I missed. Old Joe, I am all for limiting Cuppers in the lower series. However, I think the races for Cuppers in Nationwide should be a little less, perhaps 7, and for Trucks it should be 5. Though, considering the fact that NASCAR seems to believe that the health of the Nationwide and Truck series relies on Cuppers being there we may never see such a limit enforced. 30. Here is the difference: Carl is off to one of the best starts of his career, and JJ one of his tamest. Yet they have still won the same number of races, and JJ is just 5 points behind. Will the notoriously streaky Carl be able to still be perfoming at this level come September - November which is officially Jimmie Time? And BTW, if one of Tony's crew members hadn't messed up in the pits, Carl would still be winless. Every race has a certain element of luck to it. Except Texas. Jarrett88fan posted: 04.24.2011 - 1:25 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) We are going around in circles every week Cup drivers saturate Nationwide races. This much is true: Until sponsors and owners start taking chances with up and coming drivers again, 'star' Cup drivers will continue to occupy all the seat time. Over the course of 12 years in the Busch/Nationwide Series, we've lost Myrtle Beach, South Boston, Nashville Fairgrounds, Nazareth, Rockingham, Pikes Peak, Mexico City, Milwaukee and Memphis. The lack of a title sponsor for this Nashville race might spell doom for the first race at this track. Martinsville hosted one Busch race in 2006. Tracks that have been added in the 12 years and are still operating include Chicago, Kansas, Kentucky, Iowa, Road America, Montreal. The point is that there is few and far between 'standalone' Nationwide Series weekends to hold together some semblance of an identity. I remember not so long ago in the 1990s and early 2000s when Busch only drivers won the standalone events, with an occasional full-time Cup driver winning at these tracks. What the Nationwide Series needs is balance now more than ever, if it is to regain a sense of identity. 32. Cooper posted: 04.24.2011 - 2:24 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Well I think the mindset that NASCAR needs to decide with the Nationwide Series is whether they consider the series a "Minor League Series" or a "Companion Series". I don't think NASCAR wants it to be a Minor League Series considering they've went from having stand alone races at tracks that don't have Cup races to racing at tracks with Cup races. If they want to turn it into a stand alone series they're going to have to run races that will make it impossible for Cup drivers to race. Nationwide Race in Location A @3:00pm Sprint Cup Race in Location B @7:30pm This will make it impossible for drivers to run both series. Having Nationwide races on Saturday night while the Cup Series race is Sunday afternoon makes it possible for drivers to do it. You don't need funky rules to stop it just make it impossible. You know how cool it would be to watch the Nationwide Series race at 3, then have the Cup Race follow it at a totally different track. That would be cool. 34. 00andJoe posted: 04.24.2011 - 2:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Another option would be to go back to the V-6 engines the Busch Series used up to 1994. 1. More economical (it's Green!) 2. Less "cup-lite" 3. Easier to move up to from lower series. 35. JimmieJohnsonsNeatlyTrimmedBeard posted: 04.24.2011 - 3:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I meant to post this on the Nationwide race page, but I accidentally posted it over on the Truck one, so I'll just paste it here: I do think it is more NASCAR's fault than anybody else's for the problems with this series and the trucks. Like someone else said, it's hard to blame the teams for trying to make the most money and win the most races they can by following the rules NASCAR has set up, especially in this economy and with how hard it is to come by with sponsorship. There are a lot of people being employed and paid because of Kyle Busch, I'll give him that. And if Joe Gibbs or Jack Roush really wanted to train a bunch of future Cup drivers, they simply wouldn't let Kyle or Carl in the cars. It's not like they are going up to their owners, begging them to let them run the races. A lot of people like to characterize it like that, but that's just not the case. Those owners would put their foot down if need be, they aren't going to be bossed around by their drivers. And truthfully, teams like Gibbs and Roush just don't need any new Cup drivers right now. Well David Ragan is probably going to be out of a job soon, but Trevor Bayne has already proven himself and will most likely take that ride. But unless Gibbs is planning on adding a 4th car any time soon, their Cup line up is set for the next decade. So what is NASCAR supposed to do, tell them they aren't allowed to run a Nationwide team because they aren't cultivating a future Cup driver? Well they haven't, so Gibbs can just keep going along winning these races until a rule says they can't. I think NASCAR is afraid that if they restrict the Cup presence in the series, the major sponsors will pull out completely, then the smaller sponsors will leave, and the series will die. Then how many people are out of a decent paying job? NASCAR needs to decide what they want the identity of these series to be, and do everything they can to make sure it works within that frame. Is it a minor league? A feeder series? The NASCAR equivalent of the UFL? A cheaper way to see your favorite Cup stars? Because right now it's like a combination of all that, and more, and clearly the fans are getting tired. The solution to making this series might not be to just limit Cup drivers. It might be cutting down the number of races significantly, cutting the costs to run a successful team (engines, parts, tires), cheaper tickets, better options for sponsors to contribute and feel they are getting their moneys worth, a schedule that centralizes the tracks to cut travel costs, who knows. I don't know what needs to be done, but I think cutting down Cup drivers would just be treating a symptom, rather than attacking the root of the problem. 36. Smokefan05 posted: 04.24.2011 - 5:26 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Well NASCAR could mandate one car (per team) for cup guys to run only half the races, the rest of the cars are for N'wide drivers only. ANd also (not like this will happen) make sponsers support the younger drivers. Since only 1 car will be for CUp guys to run, sponsers will have to put their name on a N'wide drivers eventually. (again not like this will happen but this would be a better start then not having Cup guys running all the races with no driver points.) Or just to make is simple, if a Cup drivers run a race: no driver points, no owner points, no purse money. You want all 3 of those? With an addendum: if you have a driver in the top 35 in Cup driver points, you are -not- locked into the show. -"Spec" (per manufacturer) fuel-injected V-6 engines. You sign for two engines from GM/Ford/Dodge/Toyota for each race weekend, they're sealed, and the inspectors watch like a hawk for seal-breakage. Any evidence of tampering with an engine, and you're out for the next five races. (Note that this is Spec -by manufacturer-, not Spec -overall- like ASA did: the engines would still be unique to each brand.) -36-car fields, not 43. This lets you run on smaller tracks, which leads to... -32 race schedule. With a minimum of "companion" races - mostly "classic" ones. Daytona, Charlotte, Bristol, and the like. Places like Martinsville, South Boston, Milwaukee and Irwindale (really, why are there no major NASCAR series racing here?) would be added in place of places like Chicago, or second races at Nashville and Texas. 39. Conman out does Mikey by a country mile. 50. Rusty posted: 04.26.2011 - 11:01 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Entry List for Richmond out and there is NO Kyle Busch in the field. 51. There is an interesting parallel between those two. Both seem way more interested in being spokesmen than good drivers. For Mikey, I think he realized he didn't have what it takes as a driver and needed to turn on the charm if he wanted to stick around. I think Conman (love the nickname) has realized this too. I think he cares about becoming a good driver even less than Mikey. Mikey was never this bad. But the question is this: If Conman, Heaven forbid, somehow got over 700 Cup starts and many more in NWide like Mikey has, would he ever get better, or be like Mikey, perpetually stuck in mediocrity? I hope we never get to find out. 52. DaleSrFanForever posted: 04.26.2011 - 11:03 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @ post 31: Bingo! 53. And were it not for Dale Jr last week, Jimmie would still be winless a quarter of the way into a season." Okay let's see if Carl can be in the same position after 8 races in the Chase. Then you can gloat to your hearts' content. BTW Cup guys winning every race is really killing my enthusiasm for doing my stat rundowns for Nationwide. Carl gets his 31st career NNS win, now tied with Jack Ingram for 4th all time. He's one top 5 back of Mark Martin for 5th. The #60 is now 2nd in the owners points, 8 behind the #20 while the #18 is 3rd, 11 points back. Kyle Busch gets his 29th career runner-up finish, 2 back of Greg Biffle for 3rd. He's the all time NNS leader in top 2 finishes with 76 in 210 career starts. Brad Keselowski gets his 3rd straight top 5 finish. The #22's up to 9th in the owners points, 6 points out of 6th. Joey Logano won his 16th career pole, getting his 6th straight top 10 finish. He has yet to qualify outside of the top 10 this season. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. gets his 6th top 5 in 47 career starts, 2nd this season. After only having 8 top 10's in 32 starts last season he already has 6 in 8 starts in 2011. Trevor Bayne has finished 6th in 3 of the last 4 races. He has yet to qualify worse than 9th in 2011, and qualified a season-best 2nd for Nashville. Austin Dillon gets his 2nd top 10 in 8 career Nationwide starts, his first since finishing 4th in just his 2nd career start as an 18 year old in 2008 at Memphis. Reed Sorenson gets his 3rd straight top 10 finish, and 5th in 7 Nashville NNS starts. Josh Wise gets his 4th top 10 in 54 career Nationwide starts. Wise has a 12.6 avg fin and 3 top 10's in 12 starts with JR Motorsports dating back to last season. Aric Almirola equals his top 10's in equal starts he had last season with JRM (4 in 8 starts). But while he didn't finish worse than 8th last season, he has yet to finish better than 9th in 2011. "I'm a bit disappointed in Aric Almirola's season to date, yes he's very much in the championship hunt but you would expect him to run in the top 5 more often with Cup regulars." He's sucked compared to what I thought he'd be doing right now, but at least the consistency's keeping him in it so when/if they turn it around he'll still be in the picture. Unless JRM's putting more of their support behind Danica's team even though she's only running 12 races just to give her a better shot.... 54. Although I think Michael Waltrip is pretty bad, he doesn't hold a candle to Conman when it comes to sucking it up on the track. I can't recall any other driver who was ever as flat-out slow as he is every time he's on the track. It's like Jeff Gordon said about him, I don't see what his motives are in NASCAR (other than promoting Extenze). 55.
