The #16 team now has a win in its pocket in the event of a practice-and-qualifying washout, what with having skipped the Iowa race and thus losing their guaranteed spot. (And what was up with that, anyway? I forgot to comment on the Iowa race page but why wouldn't they have let one of the other teams run the number on their car to keep the start?) 6. 00andJoe posted: 05.28.2011 - 6:23 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Notes on cautions: Second caution: 'debris' from the #28 and #23 getting each other and the wall. Third caution: #41's engine done blown up. Fourth caution: #81's engine done blown up. Fifth caution: The splitter from the #51 went to pieces (and one bizzarely wedged itself into the #87's front end requiring a green-flag pit stop to remove it before the caution came out for the rest of the splitter's being in the groove). 7. Kelly Bires parked it in 5 laps, I guess that was all he needed to get warmed up for his final start in JGR's #18 next week. Kimi Raikkonen ran well, better than I honestly thought he would. He should have had a sure top 15. I don't expect him to run anymore Truck or Nationwide races because "Kimi does what Kimi wants", but if he did, he'd really turn some heads. 8. They have essentially become the strongest manufacturer in NASCAR, from not having a Cup or Nationwide win at this point last season. Carl picks up his 7th runner up finish of 2011, 4 in Nationwide and 3 in Cup. Aric Almirola seems to be stuck collecting 9th and 10th place finishes, I don't think that team has adapted to the new car as well as it should have. 11. the MAN posted: 05.28.2011 - 7:16 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) another cup lite race that i am glad i missed. 12. jabber1990 posted: 05.28.2011 - 7:54 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) the name of this race is misleading, Rutlege wood gave the command to start engines, if it was really the Top Gear 300 Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond would have given the command to start engines or whoever the hosts of the American Top Gear were...not just Rutlege 13. That fat loudmouth was single worst part of watching any NASCAR pre-race broadcast last year. Everything about him makes me want to punch him in the face. Not sure what the problem is Bronco. Every race he hovers around 12th to 17th place all day, and 6 times, he's quietly made a late race run to finish either 9th or 10. It's embarrasing that Danica Patrick still has more Top 5's then he and Josh Wise combined. They've got to find a way to turn the #88 team from a Top 15 team into the race winning, championship contending team that they were in the Keselowski era. And if the Pops/Almirola partnership isn't working out, a change a crew chief ain't happening. :/ 16. It's that, combined with the particularly thick accent that makes him sound like a hilly billy that's missing teeth. Dale Jarret has a southern accent and I think he's a solid announcer, because he's intelligent and enunciates. Also, Ricky Craven should be a full time Cup announcer. And they really need to break up the Darrell Waltrip and Larry McReynolds combo. Having one obnoxious idiot that says stupid stuff in the booth is almost tolerable, but two of them at the same time makes me want to jam a pencil in my ear. I think the difference is Dale Jarret and Ricky Craven want to be competent broadcasters, whereas guys like Waltrip, McReynolds, Rutledge Wood, they want to be racing "personalities". If NASCAR wants mainstream sports fans to take the sport seriously, they need to get rid of the guys that don't want to be anything but an obnoxious stereotype. 19. The American version actually got good at the end of the season. Rutledge isn't just some blabbering idiot, he actually knows cars, and he can drive very well. Tanner is amazing behind the wheel, and he started to come out of his shell by the end of the season. The only weak part of the show is Adam. The guy doesn't know cars at all, and he can't drive worth crap (see the Alaska special). Once the show really got going, it got great. Brad Keselowski is my favorite driver, and I criticize him constantly for running so many races. I've always maintained I have no problem with Cup guys running about 15 races per year. Of course NASCAR also has an obligation to stop having so many companion races. They need to have a rule saying if the Cup and NWide (or Truck) races are in different locations (this includes the IPR and Brickyard weekend) a driver must choose which one he will race in like they have to choose a series to collect points in. Not only was this Matt's first NWide race of the season, it was his first in the new NWide car and he wasn't even signed up for this event. He was filling in for Trevor. So yes I am changing my tune, because the song in the background is changed. This isn't Carl or 128 or Brad that runs 35+ races a year in this Series. The situation is different, so my reaction is different. "It's not just the southern accent, he talks like he has cotton balls in his mouth." I agree. I don't like listening to Hermie. And I am a Southerner with a Southern accent. I don't care about accents, you have to be able to speak clearly and provide insightful analysis. "Ugh, don't get me started on Rutledge Wood. They need to get him off all these SPEED shows he is on because he adds nothing, he only takes away. He is basically a fat Michael Waltrip. If only Rutledge had a really long, totally undistinguished Cup career with very few scattered accomplishments along the way he can talk about over and over, they would be equally annoying. "Aric Almirola seems to be stuck collecting 9th and 10th place finishes, I don't think that team has adapted to the new car as well as it should have." I know. He was my preseason championship pick. Now I think it will be Stenthouse because of the insanely fast Fords and Elliott Sadler's lack of confidence and overall gloomy outlook on his own racing (basically conceding the '09 Daytona 500 over the radio WHILE HE STILL HAD THE LEAD and making no attempt to block Kenseth in way that basically said "He's gonna get me anyways, may as well not even fight it"). But the #88 team has really perplexed me. Ever since '10 started, they just haven't been there. The only driver that has done much for them since then has been the reborn Jamie Mac who won a race with them. Could it be their previous driver was just really really good? 24. Ditch the silly "choose a series for points" thing (which has screwed over Trevor Bayne and Landon Cassill already), and instead adopt the following rule: * Any driver in the top 35 in Cup driver points, if he is entered in a Cup Series race, cannot compete in any other NASCAR national touring series (= Nationwide or Trucks) on the same weekend, unless: --the driver is a rookie in the Cup Series, or --is a substitution for an injured/ill driver who qualified the car in the non-Cup series. This would be perfectly logical (at least IMHO), would allow rookies to continue to compete in lower series if they moved up partway into the season (I have Harvick's 2001 season/s in mind), allows a driver who has lost his ride but is still (somehow) high in points to switch to a seat in a lower series without any problem, doesn't penalise Cup backmarkers who supplement their racing/income in lower series (Joe Nemechek, foe instance), and also throws a bone to the people who say "Cup drivers add value to stand-alone off-weekend races for the fans who come to see their heroes compete". ...oh, wait. I've composed a perfectly logical and sensible plan, and that's exactly why NASCAR will never do something like this... 26. dirtbag posted: 05.29.2011 - 6:31 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "...oh, wait. The problem isn't NASCAR, it's the economy. Blame the sponsors that are unwilling to take a chance on a driver that might tear up a few cars and run in the back, or blame the media for not focusing on them during races so they can't get any attention. NASCAR is almost the least at fault here. Maybe Cup and Nationwide should use all 66 Daytona pit stalls and run 34 Cup cars and 32 Nationwide cars simultaneously in a 350 mile race in December on a Sunday as the season finale for both after the Trucks and ARCA run simultaneously in a 66 vehicle 200 mile race on Saturday after the K&N East, K&N West, Mexico series, and Canadian Tire series run simultaneously in a 125 mile race on Friday. Except that we already know Gibbs has a problem finding sponsorship unless it's Cup drivers run in it's cars. And Roush couldn't even put a full season together for Bayne. And NASCAR has specifically said that certain race sponsors won't put up money unless Cup drivers are in a race, and that thinking the Cup drivers being here is the only problem is an incredibly simple, narrow-minded, and ignorant view that blatantly ignores every issue beyond the races themselves. It must be nice to be such a genius that every problem has a simple solution. Everyone else is just an idiot, but you have all the answers. If you were running NASCAR, it would be perfect, every race would sell out, and only perfectly behaved christian drivers would run every race with full sponsorship. Seeing as you put on me, if I was running the Nationwide series, here's what I'd do: Firstly, ban Cup drivers from competing. Accepting the fact that some sponsor will leave, we would then look at cost cutting options to make every dollar go that little bit further. If the cost of sponsorship was half what it was today, you would attract more interest from potential inverstors. I would do this through a number of different changes: - Shorter races. Having the odd 300-miler here and there is fine, but I would look at running more races around the 150-200 mile distance. This would mean less tyres would be needed to complete an event. - Different venues. Instead of running the majority of the schedule on companion racetracks, I would start holding more races at smaller local tracks. The cost to run at these tracks would be much lower and then the price of entry would also be lower, getting more fans through the gates. - Tweaking the car. I would look at potential solutions for reducing the budget a team needs to run a full season. One such option could be imposing a 7500rpm rev limiter on the engines, meaning they would last for a far greater number of races. NASCAR needs to face reality and understand that the Nationwide series would benefit immensely from scaling things down a bit. Sure, the revenue wouldn't be as big, but the money spent in the process would be far, far less. The other thing to consider, is that I'm a race fan. I couldn't care less if it was Jeff Gordon and Kyle Busch fighting for the win, or John Smith and Josh Brown. And for the record, I am not a Christian and would actually prefer all of that stuff stays at home come race day. 32. dirtbag posted: 05.29.2011 - 11:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Firstly, ban Cup drivers from competing. Without Cup guys presence, sponsors won't have to pay as much, so they can attract sponsors enough to keep their organization afloat. That is another aspect of the problem. Cup guys attract bigger sponsors, which allows the teams to spend more money, which raises the cost of being competitive. Exhibit A: Brad. Those sponsors are paying a lot for him because he agreed to run a lot of races. This drives up the cost of being competitive. Eliminate this and we'll be heading in the right direction. 34. myothercarisanM535i posted: 05.30.2011 - 12:01 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) "The only problem with that, is we don't know any of it would fix anything, because it's complete and utter nonsense based purely on speculation. Kenseth hasn't made a scheduled Nationwide start since '09, his 4 starts since 2010 coming as a substitute to replace someone else. Considering the #16 was kind of lagging behind the #6 and #60 with Bayne behind the wheel, and this was Kenseth's first time behind the wheel of the new generation NNS car, it's about as impressive a win by a Cup guy in NNS as you can get. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. gets his 3rd consecutive top 5 finish (career-best streak) and series-leading 10th top 10 of the season in 13 races; Ricky only had 10 top 10's in 39 starts prior to 2011. Ricky also earned his 3rd career pole, 2nd of the season. Ricky's led 86 laps over the last 3 races, the 2nd most of any driver in that stretch (Carl Edwards with 183 leads all drivers). Reed Sorenson is also on a 3 race top 5 streak, one off of his career-long streak of 4 set in his rookie year in 2005. Reed has 7 top 10's and a worst finish of only 12th in the last 8 races (7.0 avg fin, 2nd most points and 2nd best average finish of all full time drivers in that stretch). Steve Wallace gets just his 2nd top 10 of the season, and first at Charlotte in 8 starts (23.4 average finish). Brian Scott gets his best finish of the season in 8th, just his 3rd top 10 of 2011. That's not an issue, because they can get Busch to run almost every race. And it's not because they don't want to fund a young driver. The money just isn't there, and this is a team that wins all the time. Is there anything that could happen to this series that everyone won't blame solely on the Cup drivers? What is it going to take for everyone to realize we're in a recession and maybe sponsors just aren't getting their money worth? This is the best team in the entire series we're talking about, and it might not make it to the end of the season. But I'm sure that will somehow be Busch's fault too. 45. cjs3872 posted: 08.16.2011 - 6:58 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This will probably be the ONLY race the #16 NNS car wins this year, unless they put Kenseth in that car again, or put Greg Biffle in that car before the year's over. And I believed that when this race was actually going on that this was the #16 NNS team's last shot to win this year. 46. 00andJoe posted: 11.13.2011 - 2:40 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Cole Whitt is listed with 29 points - he should be listed as 0, he is racing for Truck Series points, not Nationwide (and has 0 points in NASCAR's official standings). 47. Although his car for the Nationwide race is technically owned by NEMCO Motorsports, KBM has a heavy hand in the effort. http://sports.espn.go.com/rpm/nascar/nationwide/news/story?id=6596788 52. Since you are probably a racing nut and know his story, I will share my favorite Kimi Quotes. "Leave me alone, I know what to do" (My Yearbook Quote) "Bwoah" "Come on, get that McLaren out of the way" "Why I get Blue Flag All the time" "Kimi that's not for you, that's the car in front of you" "Okay" ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
