Even though he finished 8th, I feel like Kelly Bires failed to take advantage of a grand oppurnitunity. 6. Schroeder51 posted: 06.04.2011 - 11:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) NNS regular win #2. 7. Wish every race could be like this one. Danica did a decent job again. Another Top 10; ran around 15th-20th place all night. Hopefully she starts driving these stock cars full-time next year. Thumbs up to all the Nationwide drivers tonight, they put on one heck of a show. 9. Carl ran out first while leading allowing Justin to get by before he almost immediately ran out gas. Allgaier's bright red #31 Brandt Chevrolet had just enough momentum to coast across the line before Edwards. As Allgaier and Edwards' cars coasted toward the finish line a white-appearing car shot by and passed both at speed. The announcers briefly thought that might have been Trevor Bayne, who was well back of the leaders in third. That car did beat both Allgaier and Edwards to the line but it turned out to just be the several laps back #52 Just Rite Acoustics Chevrolet of Kevin Lapage just making up a lap. Still finishing third behind the excitement, this was Bayne's first NASCAR race back from the mysterious inflamation illness that idled him for several weeks. 11. That's basically what it sounded like. But they will never do a worse call then the '07 Busch Talladega race. If you haven't heard that one yet then I suggest you youtube it. Good Times for sure. Heartbreak for Elliott Sadler. He was about the only one able to keep pace with Carl, but he had to pit with a tire going down inside of 10 to go. Him pressuring Carl was probably what led to him running out of gas on the final lap. Elliott will definitely be the next Nationwide regular to win. Carl picks up his third consecutive runner up finish and his fifth overall in this season. In all 3 races, he was the one the eventual winner passed to take the win. When I found out it was a lapped car, I was dissapointed but happy Allgaier won. Now that Cup drivers can't run for points, the Nationwide regulars seem hungrier for wins than they have been in the past, which is contributing to great racing. NASCAR made a good call. 38. Talon64 posted: 06.06.2011 - 4:48 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Justin Allgaier gets his 2nd career Nationwide win, each with a different organization; Penske for his 2010 Bristol win, and now Turner Motorsports for this one. It's Allgaier's 15th top 5 and 40th top 10 in 88 career NNS starts. Allgaier's the first NNS regular to win at Chicagoland since Justin Labonte in 2004 who also won thanks to fuel mileage. It's hard to exactly determine this, but it's the first win by a full time Nationwide regular not driving for a Cup organization since Brad Keselowski for JR Motorsports at Memphis in 2009. Or Mike Bliss at Charlotte for James Finch earlier that season if you think JRM's really just HMS. And maybe not even that since Finch attempted most of the Cup races that season. So the last win by a regular with a true non-Cup team before this could be as far back as Jason Leffler for Braun Racing at IRP in 2007. Carl Edwards gets his 4th consecutive top 2 finish, 3rd straight runner-up finish, 8th top 2 finish in 14 NNS races this season and 12th in 27 starts between Cup and NNS in 2011. Trevor Bayne, in his first race since the NNS race at Nashville on April 23rd, gets his best finish of the season in 3rd and 3rd consecutive top 10 in his starts. Bayne came from a season-worst 31st place starting position, his first start worse than 9th. Aric Almirola gets his 1st top 5 of 2011, but his 3rd top 10 in the last 4 races. Jason Leffler becomes the 26th driver in NNS history to reach the 100 top 10 milestone for his career. It's his first top 5 of the season and best finish since a 6th to start the season in Daytona (no better than 9th in previous 12 races). Reed Sorenson is now tied with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Carl Edwards for the most top 10's this season with 10. It's his 5th consecutive top 10 and 8th in the last 9 races. Turner Motorsports has 31 top 10's in 57 starts in 2011 between their 4 full time teams and 1 start for a 5th team. Kenny Wallace gets his 5th top 10 of the season, already his most in a single season in the last 6 years and most since he had 11 in 2005 (on pace for 12 in 2011). Kelly Bires gets his 13th top 10 in 85 career Nationwide starts, and first since a 7th place finish at California last season for JRM. Michael Annett gets his first top 10 of 2011, and just his 7th in 85 career NNS starts. Danica Patrick gets her 2nd top 10 in 5 NNS starts this season; has a 18.2 avg start and 15.6 avg fin compared to 26.9 avg start and 28.0 avg fin in 13 races last season. Timmy Hill was the highest-finishing rookie in the race, getting just his 2nd top 15 finish of the season (14th at Talladega) and 3rd top 20 finish of the season. Eric McClure gets just his 10th career top 20 finish in 151 NNS starts. Mikey Kile made his first of a number of scheduled starts for Turner Motorsports in the #30 car, qualified 5th in his 3rd career start but blew an engine after 62 laps; had an average running position of 12th. 40. Cup drivers have still stolen the show 12/14 times this year and likely would've been 13/14 if Carl Edwards didn't run out of gas in this race. I still fear we are going to end up with a winless champion. Carl Edwards needs to stop being so stubborn give up on running every single race in this series. He gets absolutely nothing from it. Brad has backed out of running every single race, but he is still planning to run 33 and make a lot of noncompanion trips. At least Kyle Busch has seemed to stop with that. But a race like this didn't deserve to have any Cup drivers in the field. 41. Eric posted: 06.07.2011 - 2:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #40 Rusty I agree with you on that, but the Nationwide series, as much as I hate to admit it, kind of needs those guys. For several reasons. One being that the Nationwide series regulars get to compete against the big guys. It'll give them experience. Plus, the cup guys do benefit from racing this series because it gives them a nice feel for the track come their race day. Although you're right in this case since the Nationwide are at a completely different track. It's also a ratings deal really. A big part in why I watch this series is because of Carl Edwards and the big name drivers. If not, you'd have Justin Allgaier, then Aric Almirola, then Jason Leffler and so on. They don't have as much of a following as a Harvick or an Edwards does. But NASCAR will do what they think is right for all their series and their fans. 42. Anonymous posted: 06.07.2011 - 4:40 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) It is all risk assessment. NASCAR needs to ban drivers from any lower tier series (no Cup guys in the Nationwide or Trucks, no Nationwide or Truck guys in the regional series, etc.) like IndyCar and the FIA do (successfully, mind you). After a few years, the series will rebound and instead it will be like watching college football: see the future stars before stardom. NASCAR is afraid to take that risk, and frankly I can't blame them in this economy, but each series needs an identity. Weird thought to add: Maybe Cup and Nationwide should use all 66 Daytona pit stalls and run 34 Cup cars and 32 Nationwide cars simultaneously in a 350 mile race in December on a Sunday as the season finale for both after the Trucks and ARCA run simultaneously in a 66 vehicle 200 mile race on Saturday after the K&N East, K&N West, Mexico series, and Canadian Tire series run simultaneously in a 125 mile race on Friday. Perhaps some other people could have fun, but realistic (no North Wilkesboro, or demo derby type ideas) that could be done to add some pizazz to a race weekend. To me, other fun ideas would be having the Trucks on a road course again, and have the Trucks or Nationwide cars run at St. Petersburg. 43. Infact, the reason I don't watch Nationwide races is because of those guys. This was the first one I've watched since Texas. I don't totally want Cup drivers banned from the Nationwide series, but I'd like NASCAR to prevent Carl Edwards and company from running 30+ a year. That is overboard. The problem is the main culprits aren't actually cutting back on their schedules. They are still pretty much doing what they have been doing the last few years. Carl is planning to do them all, Kyle is running most of them, Harvick is running a majority of the races, Logano is, Brad is pretty much running them all (I don't really consider stepping out for two road course races "cutting back"). NASCAR needs to do something to prevent these guys from running a huge percentage of the races. The issue of Cup drivers stealing championships is gone, but now we have the issue of a series champion potentially going winless. I can seriously see Elliott Sadler or Reed Sorenson winning the title without winning by 5th placing the field to death this year. 50. cjs3872 posted: 06.17.2011 - 10:29 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Trevor Bayne's run in the first 25 laps from 31st to 10th proved he could charge through the field when he has to, something I didn't think he had in him, and then he just seemed to settle in from about 6th to 8th place throughout the remainder of the event, and then moved up to third when those ahead of him ran into problems. (Elliott Sadler had a flat tire, Kevin Harvick a loose wheel, and others ran out of gas.) As for the finish call, it's entirely plausible for the error, since from the camera angle ESPN had, it's entirely possible for the commentators to make that error, since both Bayne's car and the Jimmy Means car had white hoods and we couldn't see the sides of the car as they reached the S-F line from that angle. But if Bayne had won the race, that would have made two victories for him this year that, if you gave them to Hollywood to script, they would have turned them down as being too unreal. (The Daytona 500 and this race because of the five-week layoff due to his illness.) But congrats to Justin Allgaier for this victory, though I don't know what he did to tick Harvick off in the mid-stages of this event. Anyone notice how Edwards seems to have a knack of finishing second to upset winners this year. This makes four runner-up finishes to upstart winners this year that I can count. This finish also is reminiscent of Mark Martin's win at Michigan in 2009, when Jimmie Johnson ran Greg biffle so hard that he ran out of gas, and he ran Biffle out of gas. In this race, Allgaier ran so hard that he ran out of gas on the final lap, but not before he ran Edwards out of gas seconds before he did. They still finished first and second because they were about eight to ten seconds ahead of third place when they did and were still able to coast across the finish line well ahead of Bayne, who was third. 51. They were oh so close to being on the money, since this was the Carl Edwards show right up until the very end. The Turner Motorsports group somehow managed to top Harvick's early-2011 accomplishments, leading a combined 3 laps in their 3 Nationwide Series wins that year. Looking back on it, if you can think of a bizarre way to win a race on the final lap, that team pulled it off. Leader cuts down a tire? Check. Leader runs out of gas under caution? Check.
