I tried not to fall asleep during this race, I really tried.

ML Motorsports outta think about giving David Stremme more races.
Qualified 10th, started at the back and still finished 12th.

The top 6 drivers in points are all less than stellar on road courses,
so next week outta be fun as far as the title chase goes. If Ricky
Stenhouse Jr. can survive Road America, the title truely is his to lose.

No excuses for Aric this week, I thought he and the team really hit on
something at Chicagoland, but I guess it was just luck.

JGR seems to be in a bit of a slump....Joey Logano said in his post race
interview that he was looking for more speed in his car......Don't
usually hear that from him or Kyle Busch.

Penske needs to find a way to make there cars better in race trim. The
teams at Penske dominate in qualifying week in and week out, but they
always find a way to start backing up once race day comes.

Same here, do you live in Central Florida? They cut off the race with
about 20 to go and then finally did a split screen for the final five
laps, but Carl was already way ahead and had it wrapped up so it didn't
matter.

Good job by Trevor Bayne finishing 5th with a car that had a beat in
hood from damage. Sam Hornish also had a top 10 car most of the day but
unfortunatly didn't get the finish to show for.

#5, the same thing happened here in Baltimmore last week with the Cup
race from Pocono. It was interrupted three times, including the last two
and a half laps. Also, I think you will see Stenhouse in Cup next year,
either in the #6 car, replacing David Ragan, or in the #21 car with a
full-time ride for 2013. If Ragan is replaced, Roush will, in my
opinion, put either Stenhouse in the car immediately, or possibly put a
veteran like Mark Martin in the car for one year so that Stenhouse can
learn the ropes of running the longer Cup races in the Wood Brothers car.

So where would that put Trevor Bayne, the current driver of the #21 Cup
car? Very possibly out of a ride if sponsorship can't be found for the
NNS #16 car. He can run about sixth to tenth consistently through the
race, but can't crack the top four or five, simply because he doesn't
drive the car hard enough in the shorter races, but I think he'll be
better in the longer Cup races for that very reason, if he gets the
chance on a full-time basis in a good car. Bayne actually reminds me a
bit of 1983 Indianapolis 500 winner Tom Sneva. Sneva was a driver that
qualified fast, ran conservative early in the race, then came on in the
middle stages of the race and finished near the front. But that is why
often see Bayne run further toward the front late in the race than early
in the race. But if he can't find sponsorship, Roush might have to
release him if he doesn't pick him to replace Ragan (assuming Carl
Edwards stays with Roush). And if Roush releases him, he would probably
also lose the Wood Brothers ride.

Also, congrats to Carl Edwards on the win, Roush on the 1-2 finish, and
Ricky Stenhouse for retaking the point lead. Also, this was a rare
speedway NNS race in which Kyle Busch failed to lead a lap. (Teammate
Joey Logano, who was sixth, was also shut out in the laps led department.)

Carl wins his 4th Nationwide race of the year by mid June - last year at
this time his first win didn't come until Road America which is next
week, and his 4th win of the year came at Phoenix in November.

Carl's last five races have all been wins or runner up finishes, he has
also led every race from Fontana to now. Chances are he could repeat at
Road America next week although he'll have some hard competition.

I still think the guy to beat for the title is reed sorenson, he's like
Matt kenseth- consistent but not flashy.

ricky stenhouse stats after 15 nationwide series races

2010- 13 starts, sat out of 1 race, did not qualify at nashville, 1 top
ten, 5 dnfs, 26th in points
2011- made all 15 races, 1 win, 11 top tens, 1 dnf, 1st in points

Yea I'm giving him best comeback/ turnaround already

Once again, there is not nearly enough complaining about Carl Edwards
winning this race. If Kyle Busch had won, the first 10 comments would
have been, "what a snorefest, Kryle Busch just races to make himself
feel good because he sux in cup, lololololol".

You people are hypocrites, and disappoint me. Carl Edwards is the true
bane of this series. Let me guess, he's also racing again at Road
America next week? The guy just won't quit on this series. What is this,
his 170th consecutive Nationwide start? And yet he doesn't even get a
quarter of the crap other drivers get. Stupid.

shorting the field do it or somthing that forces these teams to race the
fans pay good money to watch a good race not see 9 car park it in less
27 lap please its sad when they take a lap even two laps .... If the

Post #14, the start-and-park phenomenon is nothing new to NASCAR. For
instance, one-third of the field of 41 cars in the 1963 Southern 500
failed to last more than 20 laps (in a 364-lap race) and one-third of
the field for the 1965 Daytona 500 failed to last more than six laps.
And, though not all of the cars in the race that dropped out early
parked, nearly one-quarter of the starters in the 1972 Daytona 500 also
failed to last 20 laps. And there are other examples of teams back then
making the field for the big money races, and simply parking the car and
accepting bottom-five to ten place money, which was big compared to what
most of the other races in that era paid to finish, even in the top five
to ten. One reason the teams today are parking is the fact that they
can't afford to risk crashing, blowing their engine, or risking any
other kind of mechanical problem. The biggest factor for the early
parking of these cars is the fact that these teams simply just can't
afford to change tires, so sometimes they park after one full fuel run,
although that wasn't the case here.

But they run the races in hopes of gaining sponsorship when they run
competitively in the rare races they they do attempt to run the distance
in. (See Tommy Baldwin Racing for an example of this.) Another reason
they attempt to qualify for these races are to build up attempts in case
of a qualifying rain-out, though with the rules adopted for this year,
the chances of that happening were greatly reduced.

By the way, I missed this race and will miss the race tomorrow to watch
the U.S. Open, even though that, through three rounds, is a horribly
one-sided affair, with Rory McIlroy rewriting and shattering the record
books. (I also miss races to watch the Masters.) The reason I would miss
the NASCAR races to watch the U.S. Open and Masters is the significance
of the event. I might generally miss sizeable parts of races during the
NFL season, which may not happen this year, though the chances of an NFL
season in 2011 seem to be improving.

I've got an idea for NASCAR. How about if you aren't going to put an end
to start and parking, you take the money that would be paid to the team
but instead of getting the whole amount, you divide the amount for that
team by the amount of laps that the team ran.

I say that because there isn't that big of a gap so the smaller teams
are saying why run the whole race and end up losing some of the race money.

Although I don't like the start and park mentality but I don't see it
ending so not worth any more time.

#14 - like CJS said, teams have good reason to start-and-park, and
drivers to do so. I went in to more detail in a Cup race comment page a
few races back, but basically:

1. A race team that isn't at the racetrack is only spending money, not
making any;
and
2. A race driver that isn't at the racetrack becomes a Nobody - fast.

TBR and Landon Cassill are both "S&P Success Stories". So it makes sense.

NASCAR needs to give teams incentives for racing. Teams start and park
because the difference in pay from finishg 40th and 30th isn't big
enough to worth the losses from a crash or blown engine. All teams who
finish the race should receive an extra bonus, that gives these teams a
reason to try and run the whole race.

00andJoe, I forgot about Landon Cassill, but now that he's running the
races in their entireity this year, he doing very well in the Phoenix
Racing car, even leading the race at Pocono late before being passed by
Jeff Gordon and having to make a late pit stop. You wonder if many more
stronger than expected runs may result in a better ride in the near
future. (Remember, Cassill finished third in the Daytona NNS race this
year, I believe, which is, far and away, the best he's ever done in any
race in a major NASCAR series.) I mentioned in another comments seciton
about potential drivers to watch in the future and I mentioned Ricky
Stenhouse, Jr., Cole Whitt, Justin Allgaier, Trevor Bayne, Austin Dillon
and his younger brother Ty, as well as Parker Kligerman. Cassill is
another one that bears watching. Though among those drivers, Stenhouse
and Whitt, who came from similar backgrounds, appear to be the best of
the lot, followed by Allgaier and Austin Dillon. Bayne may have a great
future if he can find sponsorship with Roush. Otherwise, he may even
lose his current Wood Brothers ride, which he got through Roush.
However, there are still question marks about Ty Dillon, Kligerman, and
even Cassill.

I think Carl deserves the most crap out of all Cup drivers doing this
too. Ever since he got the #60 ride in this series back in 2005 he's
only missed one race and that was due to a rainout at Nashville putting
the race on a Sunday with the Cuppers in Pocono (Carl won that Cup race
ironically). He has nothing to prove in this series but he refuses to
scale back, even with no shot at a championship he refuses to scale
back. He is likely going to be the only Cup driver going to Road America
next week, he just needs to stop and move on already.

Seeing someone beat him straight up would be cool too, of course.

About the S&P's, in the case of some teams, S&P cars are the only way
they can afford to have their main car go the full distance. Shepherd
has the #55 so he can attempt the full race in the #89. Jay Robinson has
the #49 which helps fund the #28 and let it go the full way. Rick Ware
has S&P's to fund the #15. TriStar has the #44 which S&P's to fund the
#19. These S&P cars, in some cases, are probably the only way these
teams can go the full distance with other cars.

Carl Edwards gets his 33rd career Nationwide win, putting him 4 back of
Kevin Harvick for 3rd all time, and 2nd win at Michigan.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. gets his 4th top 5 in the last 5 races (6 in his
first 49), having led in all 5 races for 125 laps; Ricky's led the most
laps of the NNS regulars by far, 176 laps, which is twice more than the
next driver (Sorenson with 83). He's 4th overall, with Carl and Kyle
combining to lead 1611 of the 2901 laps run this season.

Roush has 4 wins in the last 5 races, which includes three 1-2 finishes
and 2 races with all 3 Roush cars finishing in the top 5; that's 12 out
of a possible 25 top 5's taken by Roush cars.

Kyle Busch gets his 6th consecutive top 3 finish, but he's only led 136
laps in that span (2 wins).

Paul Menard won his 3rd career Nationwide pole, first since 2005 at
Talladega, and finished in the top 5 for the 3rd time in 3 starts this
season.

Trevor Bayne gets his 2nd top 5 in 2 starts since returning from his
medical issues, and 4th straight top 10 overall in his starts.

Despite missing 5 races Bayne is still 12th in points, 30 points behind
Michael Annett for 10th. Based on his average points scored per race
Bayne would have 512 and be 4th in the standings, 13 points back of
Stenhouse Jr. for the points lead, if he'd run all the races so far.

Mark Martin gets his 3rd top 10 in 3 Nationwide starts this season and
5th consecutive in his starts dating back to 2008.

Elliott Sadler gets his 10th top 10 of the season, tying his career high
set in both 1997 and 1998.

Jason Leffler gets his 7th top 10 of the season, his 2nd straight after
going 3 races without one.

Reed Sorenson has 10 top 10's in 12 starts in the #32 (8.8 average
finish), but only has finishes of 11th, 14th and 11th in his 3 starts in
the #30.

Blake Koch was the highest finishing rookie in the race in 25th.

It seems like starting at Fontana, with the exception of Darlington and
Talladega, the Roush cars are just superior in this series. I think
Stenhouse is talented, as he is challenging Carl Edwards consistently
now, but I think he looks as good as he does because of how good the
Roush cars are. They're almost making the Gibbs cars look ordinary.

Two of them are, anyway. The #16 car ran up front and won at Charlotte
because they had a more assertive driver (Matt Kenseth) in that car.
Maybe what Trevor Bayne lacks is the confidence he needs to be able to
that car up front consistently. Either that, or he's just not assertive
enough. When have you seen him make a pass for the lead, or a top three
position on a non-RP track, because, except for California, when he did
move up to second in that race briefly, I haven't seen it.

I forgot to mention in the last post that maybe Bayne's lack of
assertiveness on the track in the NNS may have something to do with the
fact that he doesn't have a sponsor, while Stenhouse does have a
sponsor, for some of the races, anyway. After all, if Bayne has a
problem on the track, that would come directly out of Jack Roush's
pocket, while Stenhouse's sponsors (at least for the races in which he's
sponsored) would take some of the finincial hit for Roush if Stenhouse
had a problem.

However, for the Daytona 500 winner not to have sponsorship for the NNS
this late in the season makes me wonder whether or not Roush truly wants
him to succeed, or whether or not he's keeping Bayne to make sure his
competition doesn't get him. (Strategy of denial, perhaps?) After all,
if Bayne succeeds, then the development of Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., which
has been Roush's pet driver development project the last four years, may
not look so good, which in turn, would make Roush not look very good.
(The strategy of denial theory, which is an occasional military tactic,
is just that, a theory.)
