Why does he feel the need to run this series? Probably because Jimmie Johnson keeps kicking his butt in the real races, and he needs the ego boost. Pathetic. 2. And another fan who constantly complains about Cup drivers in Nationwide exposes their hypocrisy. 5. cjs3872 posted: 07.08.2011 - 10:59 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) It was a pretty tame race with an interesting finish, with Brad Keselowski and Kevin Harvick combining to lead all but 12 laps. But with the top seven finishers all going the last third of the race (65 laps, 62 under green)without stopping, Keselowski and Harvick had to run half-throttle to make it, barely going minimum speed to get to the finish 1-2. Kyle Busch, who has been driving more conservative this weekend than I have ever seen him, finished third in a back-up car after crashing on his qualifying lap. Kasey Kahne was fourth, with Elliott Sadler, who took over the point lead, ending up fifth. It was a good night for the Wallace family, as Kenny was sixth, with Michael annett, driving for Kenny's oldest brother Rusty, winding up seventh. Mike wound up 16th. Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. survived a spin, which could have been much worse if he hadn't felt that he had cut a right-rear tire, finished ninth behind Carl Edwards, with Joey Logano, who lost a top five when he ran out of fuel on the final lap, coasting home to a tenth-place finish. Trevor Bayne, who finished 11th, impressed me by being, for the first time this year, aggressive on restarts, even snookering Kyle Busch, the restart master, on one, but that was nullified when Morgan Shepherd crashd on the backstretch on the lap that restart took place. (He also move ahead of Logano on that restart, which did stand up at that moment.) If Bayne can continue to be that assertive, he can win some races, if Roush puts enough effort into that car, because I thought all he lacked was assertiveness all along, because he obviously has the talent, as well as the knack for being around at the finish. If he can stay as assertive as he was in this race, and Roush finally puts some effort into that team, which he really has no reason to at this time, he WILL contend for victories. (However, putting Carl Edwards' setup under Bayne's car was not a very good idea, because their driving styles couldn't be any more different. Bayne's driving style is more like Matt Kenseth's than that of Edwards.) 6. He's listed as running but I could have sworn I saw crew members trying to push his car out of his pit stall after the race. He didn't make it back onto the track after running out with 2 to go. Joey Logano sees his streak of 3 wins in a row at Kentucky snapped, and he didn't put much of a fight trying. 7. Now that's enough of the hollow gesture of grabbing an American flag when you win. This isn't an international race, the field isn't packed with foreigners, and you're racing in the heart of America. It comes off as little more than pandering. You're the only one that feels a need to grab a flag to gain attention. Overt displays of nationalism are for the insecure. 11. cjs3872 posted: 07.08.2011 - 11:49 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) AlmirolaFan88, that was probably because, for all the races that Martin has started in NASCAR (and it's about 1100), it was the first race he's ever run at Kentucky Speedway, I believe. He was never a factor and finished 14th, one lap behind the leaders. Interstingly, Turner Motorsports, the kings of fuel mileage in the Nationwide Series this year, were the first in near the end of the race with all four of their cars. As a result, none of their cars finished on the lead lap, with Jason Leffler their highset finisher, in 13th place, behind veteran Joe Nemechek, who finished a more than respectable 12th. The other Turner Motorsports drivers, the one battling for the championship this year, finished 17th (Reed Sorenson) and 19th (Justin Allgaier). Sorenson's poor finish cost him the points lead, as Elliott Sadler, who finished fifth, took the point lead as I mentioned in post #3. Also, with the extremely rough track, it's no doubt that experience won the day, with Keselowsi, Harvick, Kyle Busch, Kasey Kahne, Elliott Sadler, and old-timer Kenny wallace taking the top six positions. The higherst finihing young driver was Michael Annett, who was seventh, and he only achieved that through fuel mileage. The best of the young guns was, as usual, Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., but a late pit stop for fuel dropped him to ninth. However, with him and Carl Edwards coming out together, one wonders why Edwards didn't just let him pass him for eighth place, because that one point could prove vital at season's end, the way this season's going. And don't think Roush didn't notice that either. And I don't think he's too happy about it. But while Stenhouse was the best, his teammate Trevor Bayne was the most impressive to me, being more aggressive and running in the top six or seven with, frankly, a slow car. If he can run like that with a faster car, he'll contend for victories, and maybe score a victory or two, as I also mentioned in post #3. And if I'm right about Bayne, if he scores a victory by taking it, instead of inheriting it, as he did at Daytona, look out, because Pandora's Box may wind up opening. Because if he gets confidence he can win races, which he took a big step towards tonight in my view, he may be what everyone, especially in the heart of NASCAR country, may have been looking for since Dale Earnhardt, Sr.'s death ten and a half years ago, and that's a top driver from the core of NASCAR, the Carolinas and the hills of Virginia, Tennessee, and Kentucky. 12. potatosalad48 posted: 07.09.2011 - 12:26 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Nice to see Brad pick up a win after all the bad luck he had earlier this year. Also, all the pressure Trevor Bayne has on him due to the Daytona 500 win may be affecting his confidence. I know he looked good in this race, but just leave the kid alone and let him race. He'll get his confidence back with more good runs and I wouldn't be surprised if he went out and took a win this year. 13. Im gonna jump on my soap box here real quick and voice my anger that one of my favorite races for the Trucks and Busch series lost its dates for 2012. ORP is one of the best tracks for both series and year after year is one of the best races for both series as it allows the drivers to beat and bang and slide around. I dont know if it was NASCAR or the NHRA (the owners of the facility) who made the call but it was a poor call and I dont believe that Indianapolis Motor Speedway will be a good track for the Nationwide guys as I feel it is too big for them to have good tight racing. I hope whoever made this decison realizes that the fans much rather have a good short track Friday/Saturday night race than a race at a 2.5 mile track even if it is on the most hallowed grounds in racing Also congrats to the Hermanator as he is kicking some ass this season and hopefully he has a win waiting for him around the corner. Hopefully he cuts way back on the Nwide stuff next year. When he first joined Penske, he wasn't even sure they would be able to run a full Cup schedule for him because of the Verizon deal with Sprint showing how stupid they are (then they fired one of the Miss Sprints this year because nude pics she sent PRIVATELY to her boyfriend SIX YEARS EARLIER surfaced and that violated their "morality clause" because strong arming another company and hurting the overall marketplace is ok, but having pics you never meant to be public six years earlier surface isn't). So he signed a 2 year Nwide deal. My worry is that Roush may pull the plug on that team for lack of sponsorship, since they really have no reason to carry on. They intended to run for the championship, but that went away when one, Trevor Bayne got sick, and two, they didn't attempt the race at Iowa, so without sponsorship, Roush really has no reason to continue with that car the remainder of the year if he can't find sponsorship. In fact, I'm a bit surprised he hasn't pulled the plug already, or significantly cut back the team's schedule. 18. cjs3872 posted: 07.09.2011 - 9:01 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) And by the way, potatosalad48, if anything would have ruined Bayne's confidence, it would have been what happened the week after the Daytona 500, when he crashed three times at Phoenix, though only one of them, the time in the Cup race, was even remotely his fault. The reason is the owner of Turner Motersports basically said, (in a magazine I got) that the cup guys (Kahne and Martin) are racing for us because they are there to tell us what where doing right and wrong. There there to test some stuff, and tell us what's working and what's not. And to give us tips. Which I think is a good idea. It's not only a sign of patriotism, but it's also a sign of respect for the country, as well as those fighting to keep us safe. I'm not sure there are any baseball fans here, but does anyone remember the incident at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles in the mid 1970s (1976 I think) when Rick Monday, who was then playing for the Chicago Cubs saved a burning American flag in the outfield from two people who lit it on fire. Even the Dodger people liked it so much that they congratulated him on the scoreboard. They also traded for him the following year. So for anyone to be critical of anyone celebrating a win with an American flag, whatever the reason he's doing it for, I'd say that the driver celebrating is a lot better than you are, because, if it weren't for the soldiers and leaders that have protected this country for two and a quarter centuries, we wouldn't be enjoying any of the things that we enjoy today. Roush doesn't just show up with the cars when they're not sponsored and skimp out on tires and engineering and stuff. The car/team is capable of winning and Trevor Bayne also has the ability to win, but a guy like Kenseth is already proven and will generally perform better in the same car. 36. I guess if Kansas was a fluke, was Brad leading a whole bunch of laps tonight in the Cup race also a fluke? Let's put it this way. Brad won Kansas with a 7th place car with good strategy, and tonight Brad finished 7th with a car due to poorer strategy when he easily could've won outright. It all balances out. Of course, surely you'd call tonight a fluke if he won the Cup race anyway (which would've been his 3rd Cup win). If you're so clueless to think that the 12 team's lack of performance last year was all on the driver, you're very mistaken. Brad's already been proving that this season. Also, I don't think Brad runs Nationwide to make him feel better about himself. For one, gaining experience helps, and secondly, the sponsors want him in the car. In other words, it doesn't matter if he really wants to or not, THEY want him to! You're showing extreme bias just cause you don't like the guy. Martin Truex Jr can also be "worth a hoot" in Cup. In case you don't remember, he won Dover by completely dominating the race. He should have a few other wins too, if it weren't for his ridiculously bad luck. He should've won Homestead in November if it wasn't for his loose wheel or whatever took him out of contention. Team makes a huge difference and right now Truex is driving what was Waltrip's 55. And Anonymous, I have no doubt that Roush does put full effort into his drivers and teams at the track, just as any self-respecting car owner would. I just say that he really has no reason to continue running the #16 NNS car for all the races for the rest of the season, instead of cutting back and looking for sponsorship, since neither his driver or that particular team has any chance at a championship, and the car is sponsorless (and has been for 2-3 years, and sooner or later, Roush is going to feel the effects of it. As a result, while he does put full effort into the #16 NNS car, he's just going to focus more heavily on the #6 NNS car, which is partially sponsored, it's driver does have a legitimate shot at the title this year. Believe it or not, NASCAR once tried to shorten just such a celebration by Sterling Marlin after he won the 2001 fall race at Charlotte (his only win at the track), and to say the least, that didn't please anyone, especially under the circumstances at that particular time. It's Kahne's 30th top 5 and 60th top 10 in 170 career Nationwide starts, and 2nd top 5 in 6 starts this season (1 with Turner, 1 with JRM). Elliott Sadler won his 8th career NNS pole, 2nd of the season, and picked up his 9th top 5 of the season to take the points lead and tie Carl Edwards for the 2nd most this season (he leads all series regulars). Kenny Wallace's 7 top 10's this season equals his total from 2006-2010 (141 starts). After no top 10's in the first 13 races of the season, Michael Annett has 4 in the last 5 races to score the 3rd most points of anyone (6th best avg fin). After racking up 5 straight top 2 finishes, Carl Edwards has gone 2 straight races without a top 5. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. remains tied with Elliott Sadler for the most top 10's this season with 13, after only 10 in his first 39 starts. He hasn't had a top 5 in the last 3 races after having 4 in 5 races. Joey Logano's perfect record at Kentucky in NNS comes to an end; after winning from pole in his first 3 starts there, Logano qualified 4th and finished 10th without leading a lap. 45.
