First of all, they cut to the battle for the lead with 4 to go when Joey was already on his bumper. I had absolutely no idea that there was a battle for the lead. Then the play by play call of the last lap left a lot to be desired. Especially for a thrilling finish it actually was. I'm still not a fan of the new Bristol, but it's starting to grow me. The championship battle is officially on. I still believe that the experience of Elliott Sadler will pay dividends, but Ricky Stenhouse is tenaciously holding on to the point lead. #18 won his 50th Nationwide race, passing Mark Martin for sole position of number one on the all-time win list. Because of this the team prepared a 50th win flag for Kyle to wave. 3. Great effort, and great clean racing by Logano there at the end. I don't think anyone would have faulted him for being a little more aggressive, but I think he used just the right amount of contact with a teammate. Actually it looked like Busch nearly kissed the wall, but somehow he got a burst of speed on that final straightaway to nudge ahead. Anyone else think it was weird that the pit reporter asked Bowyer what he thought about Busch's 50 wins? Must have been trying to get a rise out of him. For what it's worth, I think Bowyer handled it well, and far better than I'm sure that bitter little child Harvick would have. 5. Good battles between the 18, 20, and 33 tonight. In my opinion one of the better races at Bristol in recent times. 8. potatosalad48 posted: 08.26.2011 - 11:02 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) At least this race had a close finish. Good job by Joey running Kyle down and to Kyle as well for holding him off. 9. It just moves too fast for them and their scripted storylines. You are right Cooper, the ending was awful from a broadcast perspective. I think the ending just comes to them so fast, they aren't ready for it. Uneventful race. Again. 10. murb posted: 08.26.2011 - 11:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Really good racing all night. I just wish Joey would have pulled that turn 3 move in turn 2 instead. Because then Kyle might not have had time to set up a move in turn 3, thus giving Joey the win (maybe). But all in all, another good race this weekend. Hopefully the Cup race will be even better. 11. Anonymous posted: 08.26.2011 - 11:07 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) a really bland and boring race. even with the finish being close, the excitement wasn't there. felt like a script 12. 18fan posted: 08.26.2011 - 11:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) When I saw the interval drop to 3 or 4 tenths with 7 or 8 to go, I had a sneaking feeling that they would continue to show the mid pack battle for a few more laps. ESPN does seem to struggle with their coverage of Bristol more than any other track. I think how fast the laps go by was one of the reasons they cut to the battle for the win so late, that they thought they had more time than they actually did. I was impressed by Parker Kligerman tonight. He did make a rookie mistake and spin, but other than that he seemed in total control of his car, he didn't do anything risky, kept his car clean for the most part, and brought home a top 10 finish. I was really surprised that Bowyer couldn't do anything with Logano on the last run, especially since he seemed to have the best car on the long run. Kyle's car was really good on the short run but fell off dramatically as the run went on. 13. 00andJoe posted: 08.26.2011 - 11:31 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #16 sponsor: Fastenal #40 sponsor: ExtremeBidder.com #52 sponsor: RaceDaySponsor.com 14. The finish was exciting when Busch beat Logano by two hundreths of a second. ESPN dropped the ball with this race, unaware of Logano closing in on Busch until they were bumper to bumper. Of course Marty Reid added no excitement with his bland call of the close finish. 15. He needs to stay in IndyCar. On that one restart when Clint and Kyle battled for the lead, they were ahead of 3rd place Leffler by a whole straightaway after 8-10 laps. 17. Because if that's what your feeling is, that is a very valid point because I think either the 33 team adjusted their car wrong or he ran his tires really hard trying to get back up to the JGR cars. 20. DaleSrFanForever posted: 08.27.2011 - 10:08 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I will now give my thoughts on the New Bristol. As most of you know, I have been very outspoken in how much more I enjoyed watching races at the Old Bristol. But there is a reason for it. And no, it isn't "I love me some watching them boys wreck each other!". As you know, the NASCAR season is LONG. In order to enjoy a season this long, we need diversity among the races. In the past, Bristol provided a nice changeup in the schedule. I had grown acustomed to these two times per year of chaos. Yes, I enjoyed the chaos factor of it. In a season like NASCAR's, we need that. Not every week. Not every other week. Not even once a month. We need these changeups. Bristol was so unique. We already had smaller tracks with 2 and 3 wide racing with Richmond and Dover. Now the racing at Bristol is basically a clone of the racing there, only worse. I enjoy the racing at Richmond and Dover, don't get me wrong. But we already have that. We had something unique at Bristol. It was truly an event. Now? It is just another track. The track I enjoy watching racing at the most is Darlington. You will not see racing like they have it there, or anything close to it, anywhere else. In this era of cookie cutters, cookie cutters, and more cookie cutters, these unique tracks have been a very welcome change of pace (except Indy). That is why I really enjoy watching the Pocono races, as well as Darlington, Martinsville, Dover, and the Old Bristol. They stood out. New Bristol doesn't stand out anymore, and that is very disappointing to me. I feel like they have taken something from me. A unique track has turned into a cookie cutter. The racing is now totally non descript. They used to call Dover "Bristol on steroids" referring to the fact that while it looks like a Big Bristol, it had a wider groove and provided different racing with a constantly changing track surface. Now Bristol is nothing but Little Dover, with much less compelling racing. I enjoy the one groove racetracks (except Indy). I like watching drivers compete for the same real estate. I like watching them set up another driver to get them out of position so they can take that preferred groove. Watching drivers protect that bottom groove at Old Bristol with their lives was really cool to me. Now they just move up a groove, pin the passing driver down, and hold him up forever. In the past, once on the outside, they were toast. Knowing that, and knowing the drivers knew this, and knowing the lengths they would go to, was fun to me. Plus, the racing at New Bristol just isn't very good IMO. They have had some good finishes, but that is it. With the drivers spreading out on the track, the racing there reminds me of a Half Mile Michigan as opposed to Little Dover. How can the field get spread out on a half mile track? It happens now, and it is depressing. We have enough cookie cutters as it is, and we have just added more. I don't like that. Again, SMI had such a unique track, races that were truly events, can't miss TV. Why would they even think about changing that? They ruined it. In my opinion, they ruined it. The track, and two weekends of the unexpected. RIP Fun Bristol: 1969-2007 25. AJ posted: 08.27.2011 - 10:29 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) DSFF, I completely agree, Old Bristol was a gem, a classic, and now it's basically a midget clone of Michigan and Fontana. "This was the single most boring "race" I've EVER witnessed in my 30+ years of being a race fan. I've seen F1 practice that was more exciting." The F1 Qualifying from Belgium today was more exciting than any of the races we've seen at Bristol since they did the progressive banking. 26. That's Bruton Smith for you. The guy that blames a freeway for the fact that he doesn't have enough parking for a sellout crowd. He changed Atlanta from the unique true oval to a stupid Charlotte clone, changed Bristol to this, and he probably has done a bunch of other stupid stuff to racetracks that I don't remember right now. 29. How much did that fancy pair of rose colored glasses set you back? I'll take a real race over a 3 hour single file shove match any day. Good riddance out-dated, practically un-raceable Bristol. Welcome to the 21st century. (Bristol is a cookie-cutter now? Jesus Christ, NASCAR fans really will complain about anything) 30. Matt L posted: 08.27.2011 - 12:57 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Let's face it, Bristol advertised itself for years as single file bumper cars. When everyone else was advertising high speeds & 2-3 wide, Bristol had tempers, fireworks, twisted sheet metal, and a scuffed up walls. Fans loved it! They didn't seem to care the drivers could not go x wide, there are 16 other tracks on the schedule for them to do that. When they redid the track, the results were the exact opposite of everything they promoted for a decade. Now it's 2-3 wide with a quarter of the caution filled drama. Bristol is no longer distinguished from any other track, it's now just a small Dover. Their advertising is still crossed between the Bristol of old & new. Right now, that's a hard sell. 31. People loved Bristol back in the day but now it is hard to get excited about racing here anymore, it just isn't the same. It's still better than Pocono and such, but that isn't saying much. I miss the days of the bump and run and having to fight for your spot on the track. The final battle between Kyle and Logano was fun, but the race overall was pretty boring. Shame. 33. In that span he's scored the most points of any driver (256, 253 for Stenhouse and 221 for Elliott Sadler). Michael Annett went 5 straight races without a top 10 after his 4 race top 10 streak, but finished 6th to equal his total amount of top 10's (6) from the previous 2 seasons combined. Parker Kligerman's 9th place finish is his 3rd career top 10 in 15 Nationwide starts since 2009. Brian Scott gets his first top 10 in 12 races, and just his 4th of the season. But it's his 13th straight finish of 17th or better (14.2 avg fin). 43. Watch the 1985 Bristol Night Race (it's an ESPN Classic Staple) and tell me it bears ANY resemblance to the racing we are seeing now. Not even close. And it isn't just the blacktop surface, the open view of the mountains, and the infield of nothing but grass. And guess how the winning pass wade. Dale bumped Tim Richmond going into Turn 3 to get beside him, then doorslammed him out of the way. That sounds an awful lot like an "Old Bristol" technique. Oh wait, it was the "Old Bristol". 46.
