Its ironic that his best season in this series comes in the one year when he isn't eligible for the championship. The #60 team has become the new #18 team of the Nationwide series, they dominate races with ease and lead tons of laps and are always in the mix. Even though the points are close, I don't think Sadler is going to play catchup and win the championship. He just doesn't have the speed that Stenhouse has. And if he does indeed lose, then you could likely point to the race at IRP where he spun out battling Stenhouse for 2nd as the race where he lost the championship. 3. cjs3872 posted: 10.14.2011 - 11:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) A great charge with a damaged car gets Carl Edwards the win, but he owes this win to the efforts of Trevor Bayne, and admitted so in victory lane. Bayne finished third, but, at least according to Joey Logano, not without a little controversy. Kyle Busch returned to his habitat, the front of a NASCAR field, and finished second, while Elliott Sadler chopped off a quater of his deficit with his fourth-place finish, with Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. getting a series of bad restarts to go from a contender for the win to a ninth-place finish. The much-maligned Brian Scott rounded out the top five, while Brad Keselowski, who again had the field covered, had a cut tire and spun out while trying to get to the pits. Keselowski had to settle for sixth. Now for the controversial incident between Bayne and Logano in which, Bayne did absolutely nothing wrong in my opinion. Coming to nine laps to go, Edwards got on Logano's outside and Bayne followed. Bayne came down on Logano, taking the air off his car, and Logano crashed. Again, he did absolutely nothing wrong, as drivers have been doing that for a couple of decades now. But Logano was not happy about it, and claims that Bayne has been racing him that way for a while. Whether or not he has is not the issue here. Not only do I have a problem with Logano's comments about what I claim is a fair racing move gone wrong, but what he said in relation to the situation in relation to Bayne's on-track performance with that of Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., and his comments about Bayne having to prove himself thusly. Well this is the second absolutely ridiuclous thing he's said about another driver. Remember, after getting wrecked by Kevin Harvick at Pocono last year in an Earnhardt-esque move, Logano made the comments about Harvick's wife wearing the firesuit of the family. And by the way, Logano took the air off Bayne's car about 15 laps before the incident when Bayne tried to pass him then. Certainly it was not as forceful as what Bayne did to him, but with nine laps remaining, you sometimes have to make moves you wouldn't ordinarily make, and Bayne's move on Logano was certainly one of them. But Loganos's comments about the way Bayne racedf him was like a boy crying over spilt milk. I think Bayne is a very popular driver among the other drivers, and the comments about Bayne tonight, along with the earlier comment about the Harvicks that Logano made, is to me, beginning to make Logano a very unpopular driver among the other competitors, who I think are beginning to get tired of Logano's act. If there's anyone that's feeling the pressure, it's Logano, and his post-race antics when something goes wrong are only making things worse. After all, Joey Logano is NEVER going to have a moment that unites the entire sport like Bayne had in this year's Daytona 500, and Logano will never be very popular if he make very many more comments like the ones he made following the Nationwide race on 10/14/2011. He may even talk himself right out of the sport if he continues. 4. 18fan posted: 10.14.2011 - 11:14 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I think the #18 team of 2008-2010 was more well rounded than the #60 team of 2011 and that's why they won more, but the #60 team is definitely top notch and right now they are the best team in this series. The #18 team still is the best on the short tracks and quirky tracks like Darlington. The #60 team was better at Dover but Dover has always been a Roush stronghold. To prove my point about the 18 team being better on the non-intermediate tracks than the 60 team, 7 of Kyle's 8 wins this year are non-intermediate wins. He won at Phoenix, Bristol, Fontana(his only intermediate win and it was by a pit call), Talladega, Darlington, Loudon, Bristol, and Richmond. 3 short track wins, 2 1-mile flat track wins, 1 RP win, 1 intermediate win, and a win at Darlington that is not like any other track. 5. This just isn't KHI's year however. Despite not a single Top 3 finish all season, Aric Almirola moves into a career high 3rd in points. Unless he & Pops find some hidden horsepower in the #88 car it's going to be tough to hold off Justin Allgaier for that 3rd spot. I said to myself when Brad was dominating, "The Las Vegas race seems like a distant memory for the #22 team now." Sure enough a little while later a tire failure ends his chances at what would have been a sure victory. 6. There is a difference between the two. Cooper, I also mentioned Edwards' great charge in his damaged car to take the win, with a BIG assist from Trevor Bayne on the last restart, withouth which, he would not have won, admitting so in victory lane afterwards. Bayne had a great late-race charge himself, which accroding to Joey Logano, was not without controversy. Read post #3 (or post #30 in the Cup comments page) for the entire story behind that. And Spen, I also mentioned the series of bad restarts that Stenhouse had, making me almost wonder if had lost third gear late in the race. Those bad restarts allowed Elliott Sadler to cut one quarter of his points deficit (5 points) off, and now he trails Stenhouse by just 15 heading to Texas in three weeks. By the way, two consecutive off weekends for a major NASCAR series is inexcuseable for this time of the year. There should be an off weekend this time of the year for a possible make-up date due to bad weather, but two in a row is inexcuseable. And with Stenhouse's past in dealing with a championship battle (remember the 2008 ARCA championhip battle with Scott Speed and how he handled that), the pressure must be getting pretty high on Stenhouse, especially since his future may be somewhat in question, due to Roush's sponsorship problems with both his Cup (car #17 is not yet sponsored for next year, and the #6 may be going away next year) and Nationwide program (which might be totally going away next year). And Spen, your comment about Timmy Hill being involoved in just two caution periods this season is somewhat reminiscent of Terry Labonte's 1992 season in Cup. That year, despite being in a car that was well off the pace that year, Labonte finished in the top ten in the standings, because he was involved in zero caution periods that year, if I'm not mistaken. That's right, Labonte was, if I'm not mistaken, not involved in a single caution period that season. 16. Jocke Persson posted: 10.15.2011 - 9:12 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Go Elliott Sadler. Remember, he's won two qualifiers at Daytona and nearly won the 2009 Daytona 500 before being passed by Matt Kenseth just seconds before the final caution fell for Aric Almirola's spin on the backstretch. and he has two 500-mile race wins in NASCAR's top series under his belt in 2004, the same year he qualified for the Chase. He didn't do well in the Chase, but at least he qualified for it once. 18. Some guy posted: 10.15.2011 - 3:57 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I NWS driver has not won a race in two months. Also, cjs, if Joey did indeed rip into Trevor for his Nationwide performance this year compared to Stenhouse's, he should be the last person to be talking. He is lagging BADLY behind KyBusch and Hamlin in the CUP Series, and his CUP crew chief and CUP sponsor even considered leaving him this year. So it's pretty silly for him to talk about a Nationwide regular, with only a handful of Cup starts under his belt that way. I think Stenhouse all but has this year's championship locked up, barring something unexpected happening. He consistently finishes ahead of Sadler pretty much every week, although this race was an exception. 20. Big difference between the situation you're talking about and what Bayne did to Logano. Bayne's pinch on Joey definitely earns the "cheap/dirty" tag based on how tight he pinched him. Nobody in Cup or Nationwide runs a car that tight without expecting the car below to have a huge issue. Trevor doesn't exactly race smart very often, so it's not exactly surprising. If you wanna laugh, take note of every time Allgaier & Bayne are 3 wide with somebody. 99% of the time, someone leaves the 3 wide with damage. 21. cjs3872 posted: 10.15.2011 - 7:08 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) RCRandPenskeGuy, Logano definately did rip into Bayne for his Natiowide performance this year in his post-race interview. And The Truth, the combination of Bayne and Allgaier never have mixed well on the track, dating at least back to a race last year at Nashville, I believe, when Allgaier put Bayne into the fence, and Bayne did likewise later on. The did get together again in Kansas just after a restart, but that was after Bayne's crew had elected not to change tires, and Bayne's car was all over the place. It just happened to be Allgaier's car that Bayne ran into, but Bayne immediately apologized for that incident. In fact, they were racing for ninth near the end of the event, and Bayne got by Allgaier without incident. On the flipside, Bayne who's still seeking his first NNS win, could've taken it three abreast with Edwards and Kyle Busch on the last restart, but elected to effectively push Edwards to the win instead. And remember that Kevin Harvick was none to happy with the way Allgaier was racing him at Chicago, a race that Allgaier went on to win. And let's also not forget that Allgaier flat-out dumped Reed Sorenson, his then-teammate at Atlanta, which took Sorenson out of the hunt for the championship. And as it so happened, Bayne would being caught up in that, as well, due to bad pit stops. As for your comment about pulling down on the car you're racing being a dirty move. How long have you been watching the sport, baecause that's been going on for over 20 years now. Guys do that all the time, especially late in a race. It only gets noticed when somebody crashes. It's just a part of the game and every driver out there knows it. Had there been more laps left in the race, I highly doubt he would have been so aggressive with that move when he followed Carl Edwards by Logano. And by the way, when cars are three abreast, no matter what three cars it is, especially on a tight track, someone is ALWAYS going to wind up with damage. That's just the way it is. 22. I've been watching the sport for 17 years and I always notice it. There's pinching, and then there's REALLY pinching. It's not very often that people pinch as hard as Bayne did to Logano last night. With the way the aero is, that's a guaranteed wreck or near wreck, and every time you see someone run somebody that low, you ALWAYS see either a wreck or a near wreck. You usually see people giving more room, as was evident in just about every battle on the track last night. The Allgaier/Bayne thing is just two drivers not completely aware of their surroundings. Remember when Kasey Kahne wallrode at Bristol? Another example of Trevor Bayne on the bottom and Justin Allgaier in the middle. Allgaier is a great example of a driver that, in my opinion, has a much cleaner reputation than he actually drives. When Steve Wallace makes similar mistakes, he gets absolutely railroaded. When Allgaier makes those mistakes, most people just forget about it quickly like it never happened. There are definitely many examples of Allgaier/Bayne 3 wide situations causing problems, and it's usually just out of lack of awareness. Nothing intentional. 23. cjs3872 posted: 10.15.2011 - 11:31 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) There's no doubt that Bayne caused that particular incident at Bristol where Kahne rode the wall, and I think Bayne started to get a little timid after that until recently. Who wouldn't? But Allgaier doesn't seem to learn his lessons, as he continues to make drivers upset at him (Harvick at Chicago and wrecking Sorenson, a teammate at Atlanta, which involved Bayne as well). That seems to be why Penske released him, as well as lack of sponsorship. But I repeat my earlier comment that if you get three abreast on most tracks, there going to be damage of some kind done, as you can't race three abreast on all but the widest tracks. 24. In that case, Hamlin was more than likely on the bottom because he had a tire going down, so he probably moved over for Busch and Earnhardt, Jr. to go by. The general rule is, that except on the widest tracks, that running three abreast is mmuch more than likely, going to end up in at least one car getting some damage. Remember the comment that Neil Bonnett quoted during the 1992 Daytona 500. The quote, and I'm paraphrasing this quote, which was that two abreast was going to be dicey, but three abreast is going to be a certain wreck. This was mentioned during the caution for the big lap 92 crash that effectively ended the competition that day, as Davey Allison led every green flag lap after that on his way to the easiest Daytona 500 win anyone has had in the last 25 years. 26. hyperacti posted: 10.16.2011 - 3:12 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) This race eliminates Jason Leffler from championship contention. All Sadler has to do in finish fourth in all three races, and if Stenhouse finishes ninth twice and tenth once, Sadler gets the title by one point, despite not finishing higher than third in any race, if they get the same number of bonus points in those three races. And the question about Sorenson is, will he even stay in the top five? He's currently 57 points ahead of Jason Leffler, and if he stays in the #82 car, he may not be able to stay in the top five. 28. I haven't thought Justin was aggressive enough at times. Rarely do you hear a driver whining about the #31, or lining up in the pits for a fistfight. Maybe he has the Carl Edwards "aw, shucks" thing going on; I don't know. I'm assuming he's more of the Ricky Rudd type, calm and collected off the track, but when the helmet goes on, the horns come out. Problem in Nationwide these days is that if you aren't aggressive, if you just move over and let the Cup guy on your bumper pass, then you lose that momentum and get passed by five more Cup guys, and you're racing for fifteenth at best. Fifteenth isn't going to cut it, not for the title and not for sponsors. As for the Sorenson-Allgaier incident...I've read that Justin has a close relationship with Steve Turner (or at least through James Buescher), probably more personal than Reed Sorenson's. But with sponsorship on the line for 2012, I can't see why Turner would release Sorenson just to preserve a better finish for Justin in the points. The prize money of the #32 finishing third would be worth more than a little personal favor. And I can't see why Allgaier would wreck a team car on purpose. If I were a car owner, and I wanted one driver doing better than the other, I sure as hell wouldn't want one of my drivers crashing the other out. The team works hard on every one of those cars. I figured Sorenson's deal was more as follows: DG already had him out of the #32 for five races to get Mark Martin in there. With only one win this season (plus one for Martin), and a sponsor move likely anyway, why not ask for a new driver to push the envelope for some late-season wins? Vickers had run for DG when Braun was a Toyota team, and it wouldn't be the first time a series regular got booted from the DG car (Burney Lamar wasn't doing that badly when they removed him from the #33). And if such a move, as a team owner, could convince DG not to leave...well then, it's an easy business decision. Same deal with Great Clips...they're so sold on having that Cup driver in there for a part of the schedule, forcing Turner to run a fourth team so those drivers would have somewhere to race when the Cup guy was behind the wheel. Only Allgaier got a full season in the same car thus far, and that's because no sponsor demanded otherwise. 29. cjs3872 posted: 10.16.2011 - 9:44 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I'm not saying that Allgaier wrecked Sorenson on purpose. I'm just saying that the move Allgaier attempted on sorenson, while not as idiotic as the one David Ragan made last night, wasn't far from it when you consider that was a team car he wrecked. And from what I hear, that isn't the first time that Allgaier's had a run-in with a teammate, because he may have at one at Watkins glen earlier this year. And let's remember that Turner isn't the only team that Dollar General is leaving holding the bag at year's end. Let's not forget that just a couple of weeks ago, Ed Carpenter won the IndyCar race at Kentucky Speedway in a car sponsored by Dollar General, and they're also leaving Sarah Fisher's IndyCar team, in spite of that win at Kentucky, so they're leaving Fisher's IndyCar team the same way that they've left the #32 NNS team at year's end. Allgaier just seems to have problems getting along with other drivers, even his own teammates, and that's no way to make a career, especially at this point in his career. He might be able to get away with that if he was a more established veteran, but not at this particular point in his career. But Justin Allgaier is a very aggressive driver, which is why I think he'll go far, but not if continues to make enemies on the track, and he has made enemies, even among teammates. 30.
