With the big lead Stenhouse had, I wouldn't have been surprised to see a "debris" caution somewhere in there, but thankfully, there wasn't. And on the subject of Ricky Stenhouse, I've actually become something of a fan of his. It's always good to see a young driver learn from his mistakes and make real progress. 6. cjs3872 posted: 03.10.2012 - 9:01 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Well, Rusty (#4), what caused Brian Scott to crash was a combination of things. First, while in a group of cars, he ran up on the car of Derrike Cope, which caused him to lift in turn three. That allowed Trevor Bayne to get on his outside, which in turn sucked Scott's car around due to the areodynamic effect of having a car on his outside, after which he overcorrected, causing him to slam into the wall exiting turn four head-on. Fortunately, he walked away unhurt. What happened to Scott would have happened to just about anyone else. And Alex, having Bayne miss the next Nationwide race at his home track (Bristol, the sight of his very first Nationwide start) due to lack of sponsorship is bad enough, but I'm worried that his sponsorship problems in the Nationwide Series could very well also cost him his ride in the Wood Brothers car after this weekend's race. The reason being, Roush may have to release him outright. The Wood Brothers' car, from what I understand, may be tied to the Roush deal. In fact, from what I understand, Ford and Roush tried to get Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. in the Wood Brothers' car this year, but the Woods talked them out of it. So we could very well see Stenhouse in that #21 car the next time it races if Bayne has to be let go. Either that, or they coulud go with one of the veteran drivers that Frank Stodard has in his car, one of which, Terry Labonte, is eligible for the champion's provisional, so Bayne's problem may well affect the Wood Brothers, as well. But also, this is third different organization for which Bayne has had this particular problem, as he had this isue with DEI and MWR previously. Bayne's luck in this regard is starting to remind me, and probably others, of the plight of Donnie Allison back in the first half of the 1970s, when he couldn't keep a ride, despite being one of the top drivers on the circuit. He even drove for A.J. Foyt at Indy twice, never finishing lower than sixth, and finishing fourth in 1970 and winning Rokie of the Year at Indy just six days after thoroughly dominating the World 600 at Charlotte. He also won the Firecracker 400 at Daytona later that year, yet was the prominent driver most adversely affected by the factory pullout after the 1970 season. Ironically, Donnie was someone that mentored Bayne in his early racing career, so maybe he's inherited some of Donnie's luck. And myothercarisanM535i, we saw several Nationwide Series races last year in which there were no phantom debris cautions late in the race to wipe out a big lead, the most noteworthy of which was the second race at Chicago which Brad Keselowski won by about nine or ten seconds. 7. ch posted: 03.10.2012 - 9:24 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Sponsor change on the 24 24 - VSI Racing / Kentucky Antler Co. 10and Joe beat me to the others... On the Trevor Bayne situation, I wish that RFR would allow him to run the unsponsored nationwide races for another ford team! Rick Ware Racing would have no problem convincing their sponsor, Poynt, to back him for a few races in the 15. Roush's steep asking prices are killing Bayne's career right now. For crying out load, he is forth in the points. Think about what he could do if given a full season, even if it is like Reed Sorenson last year, or Bobby Labonte in 2010 (cup series). Great finish for Mike Bliss and the Tri-Star 44 team! Came back from 2 laps down in 28th at the midway point to a top 15 lead lap run, but still NO MENTION from ESPN! Also proud of Mike's teammate in the 19, Tayler Malsam. Last year he couldn't qualify for Truck races and was out of a job. Somehow he got G-Oil to back him full time this year and has done an exceptional job. Top 10 in Daytona and a lead lap 16th place finish this week. He's even 7th in the points, but still hardly anything about him from ESPN! In fact the entire Tri-Star team as a whole has improved this year. The only weak link is Eric McClure. I have to be honest by saying that I expect more out of him, especially considering how well Bliss and Malsam are doing. I felt like SPEED did a fairly good job in giving Johanna Long some good coverage, but ESPN sort dropped the ball in the race. It was ok, but she did a really good job. Good solid runs by Mike Wallace and Blake Kock, but no recognition. And it was great to see Morgan Shepherd run this week after DNQ-ing at Daytona and parking at Phoenix. 8. ch posted: 03.10.2012 - 9:26 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) *Koch 9. 18fan posted: 03.10.2012 - 9:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Andy Petree did say something about how well Bliss has run this year. 10. Steve had a horrendous 2007 and got better, but he remained the butt of all jokes. Then you look at Brian and he's consistently torn up cars without ever showing signs of getting better, and very few people even care to acknowledge that. Now Steve's not in the series, and Brian Scott's still tearing his stuff up. I don't know why Steve Wallace is an easier target, maybe it's his last name, maybe it's his Tourette's. However, the same way that Rusty has funded much of Steven's career, Brian Scott wouldn't have a ride if it weren't for his dad's wallet. And with that being said, cjs is pretty right in talking about how he was caught in a bad situation. But people disregard that for drivers they dislike, and will use it as an excuse for drivers they like. The fact of the matter is that not everybody wouldve wrecked in the situation that Scott found himself in today. Many would, many wouldn't. We've seen it weekly for years. Some people can get their way out of those situations without wrecking the car, but Brian Scott is not one of those drivers. Boils down to awareness and car control. Brian Scott has never shown himself to be a driver with great awareness or car control. But, he's not Steve Wallace, so the guys who would've gone off the deep end if the 66 did that today will be in hiding. 26. Danica's strongest tracks are at the biggest tracks for a number of reasons, and Cole, in his 6th career Nationwide start, was clearly the better driver in equal equipment and finished 6th compared to Danica's 12th. At Phoenix he was 3 laps ahead of her, but she was able to be a lead lap force in this one. Aside from it likely being more suited to her driving style, it's worth noting that big tracks put a bigger emphasis on the car, where solid drivers in mediocre cars will have a harder time making up for their lack of equipment. 28. cjs3872 posted: 03.10.2012 - 11:08 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) On the whole sponsorship situation involving Roush, there's another party involved that nobody else seems to be mentioning, and that's Boston Red Sox owner John Henry. I think a major part of the problem is the fact that the Red Sox may not want others sponsoring cars they they co-own. Think about it. Henry got involved with Roush at about the same time that George Gillett got involved with Ray Evernham, and we all know what wound up happeneing there. Could we be beginning to see a similiar thing happen to Roush as what happened to Evernham? Remember that before John Henry and the Red Sox got involved with Roush, Roush rarely ever had problem attracting sponsors. The only known case of that was in 2004 with the #99 car in Cup. When Henry got invoved in Roush's team, Roush had five fully sponsored Cup teams, three of four healthy Nationwide teams, and two Truck Series teams. But in the four years since Henry got involved with Roush, his Truck team went away, all but one of his Nationwide teams, including his NNS flagship #60 car (barring a sponsorship miracle) will have gone away, and two of his Cup teams (one due to NASCAR's four-team limit rule), including his flagship #6 car, have gone away, and he's still having trouble sponsoring both Carl Edwards and Matt Kenseth in Cup. Maybe the problem isn't Roush, but rather co-owner John Henry, owner of the Boston Red Sox. If Roush doesn't fix something here, his orgainzation may soon go the way of Ray Evernham's and nearly Richard Petty's, one of which was scuttled by Gillett;s double dealing, and the other one nearly was. Roush may not realize it, but his organization is heading down the same path, possibly due to an owner of a franchise in another sport, who knows nothing about the business of racing. After all, of the 11 teams Roush had when Henry and the Red Sox bought in, as of next week, only four will be left. I don't think the problem is Roush. I think the problem is his partner, and he needs to cut bait, or his team may not exist in three years. 29. cjs3872 posted: 03.10.2012 - 11:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The Truth, Jimmie Johnson found himself in a nearly identical predicament in last year's fall Cup race at Charlotte, the night before the tragic events at Las Vegas in the IndyCar race, as Scott found himself in today, and did the exact same thing, overcorrecting his car, and crashed in turn two the exact same way, head-on. And by the way, the two drivers that impressed me today were Trevor Bayne and Cole Whitt. Bayne brought a car that was flat-out slow up to fourth place, was third on the final two restarts, and nearly got second on the final one before dropping back. That car had no business being up with the leaders, as far of the pace as it appeared to be. But Bayne, who's driving style is beginning to remind me of Tom Sneva, somehow got that car among the leaders and finished fourth. (Sneva was hardly a factor early in a lot of his races when he was among the elite drivers from the mid 70s to the mid 80s, but toward the middle stages of the race, he became a factor, even in cars that were off the pace.) And the same could be said about Cole Whitt, who also spent some time during that last run in third place before dropping back. That car was equally slow, but he drove it up to where it was among the front runners, but you had to watch the ticker on the top of the screen to see it, because he was never mentioned until late in the race. Ironically, one of those drivers was out of a ride during the off-season, and the other one is about to be out of a ride, and possibly out of two rides. 30. ch posted: 03.10.2012 - 11:24 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) There are many teams that would jump at Trevor Bayne and offer to run a car for him if he can get out of Roush. Rick Ware ran 4 cars last year (even though 2 were S&P) so they could easily expand if needed. And they have VERY loyal sponsors in Poynt, Lilly Trucking, and FastWax / FW1. As 10andJoe said, Jeffrey Earnhardt is driving the 15 at Bristol, but they could easily run a third car for that one race then give the 15 to Bayne. I'm sure Gibbs could run a car for him, especially with the 18 / 20 part time this year. It would make more sense to combine those two into just the 18 to make a run for an owners championship and let Bayne have the 20. Who knows, Mars could jump on to a well spoken young gun like Trevor. Penske could be another. Brad should be going the way of Harvick and focusing more on the cup side of things. The only problem there would be Kligerman. But I'm sure the captain could work something out, especially with the large difference in asking prices for sponsorship. Turner Motorsports could expand back into a 4 car team if the opportunity presented itself. Now I'm throwing a long-shot out there, RAB Racing. It has been said that Kenny will be out of the car if he can't find a sponsor. But what if Trevor brings a sponsor? All of these depend on Roush letting him go, but I think that may be coming. Look at Darnell and O'Quinn. All drivers Roush ran and spoke highly of that were let go due to sponsor problems. If I were Trevor I'd be looking around at what my options are... 31. He had about as much room as every other side by side battle in the race. It's just called making a mistake, or the car being too loose to handle it. My point isn't that people don't overcorrect or get aero-loose or anything like that. Jimmie makes mistakes just like anybody else. Jimmie's also NOT made that mistake a million times in identical situations. You've watched racing for a long time and you've seen countless examples of cars that get aero loose because of the guy directly above them. The difference is that Brian Scott wrecks cars on a regular basis, and not everybody would've wrecked in his position today. At every single big track, you will see guys get pinched hard enough that you could use the aerodynamic excuse as to why a wreck breaks out, but usually, guys simply handle it and a wreck doesn't transpire. Brian Scott is a mediocre race car driver and I predict that he'll never be a top 20 quality Cup driver. He was in a bad position today where it's more likely to happen if the driver isn't a badass, but the whole "it wasn't his fault" excuse isn't the way to go. But since his Dad isn't also a TV commentator, he gets to toil away in obscurity where he belongs. We had to have Steve shoved down our throats. Glad to see I'm not the only one worried about Roush Racing's future. As far as Jack Roush, I could care less. But I do care about some of his drivers. What about Matt Kenseth? One of the 5 best drivers of this generation still has 15 unsold races even after winning the Daytona Freaking 500. Trevor Bayne, a promising youngster who makes you feel good about yourself when he succeeds and already has a Cinderella Daytona 500 win is seeing his career stuck in neutral cause of sponsorship. And where will extremely promising youngster Ricky Stenhouse go to move up? If he can't even sell sponsorship for Kenseth, how can he get any for Ricky? Jack needs to swallow his pride and lower his asking price or change his way of doing business. The biggest thing he has on his side right now is Ford's undivided attention. That will change next year as The Captain joins them with the newest breakout star, Brad Keselowski. I'd also love to see Trevor get Brad's races in the #22. That's a major reason why I think Roush could be heading for the same thing that Evernham had happen to him, and that Richard Petty came within an eyelash of having happen to him. Roush's sponsorship problems didn't begin in earnest until he partnered with another sports organization from another sport, which is where Ray Evernham's problems really started, and where Richard Petty was nearly forced out of the sport he's given almost 55 years to. I think if Roush cuts ties with Henry, his sponsorship situation will get better within six months to a year. After all, like I said, in the time that Henry has been a co-owner of Roush's NASCAR organization, Roush has gone from 11 teams down to four, as of next week, and it may be only three next year unless things drastically improve. I think Henry and the Red Sox, not Roush is the problem there at Roush. 36. The company does have to think in demographics, not individual responses, after all. 40. 10andJoe posted: 03.11.2012 - 5:23 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) ^ Given that most drivers do that, and that NASCAR's fan base is predominantly, still, more conservative than the national average, I fail to see the problem. 41. myothercarisanM535i posted: 03.11.2012 - 8:13 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) "You may think that way, but the company would be more likely to think about the fact that roughly one out of five people are atheists, therefore costing them 20% of their potential custumers. As I said, I'm not a Christian man, but the beliefs of drivers like Trevor Bayne have absolutely zero negative influence on my opinion of them as a person or a driver. Same goes for the prayer - despite not believing in it, I see nothing but good intentions and positive message, so how could that possibly be a bad thing to me? But you're right, I'm also aware that my own views are not necessarily a good representation of the greater whole, but I would find it to be quite disappointing if you're right and Trevor Bayne's faith is deterring potential sponsors. 42. cjs3872 posted: 03.11.2012 - 11:15 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Could Trevor Bayne's problem finding sponsorship have to do with the fact that potential sponsors may think he's a phony when it comes to faith? Because like I've said, if Roush has to release him for lack of sponsorship, that will be the third team that has had to do that in the last four or five years, because DEI and MWR also had to release him for that very reason. And something like this, the lack of being able to find a sponsor, may be something that follows him for the rest of his career, however long it lasts (which might not be very long), because of the reputation he's getting for not being able to attract sponsorship. Top-tier teams may be afraid to hire him because he can't find sponsorship. After all, for this to happen to a driver of Trevor's apparent caliber three times, and this time with a win in the world's most prestigous stock car race, the Daytona 500 now on his resume, a top-tier team will be afraid to hire him because he can't find sponsorship. Reputations follow you, and Trevor's reputation of not being able to attract sponsors, no matter what team he goes to, may end up deep-sixing his career, possibly even ending it within three years, unless something changes. 43. But the one thing I keep thinking about is that Jack has always had a revolving door of sponsorship. In the recent economy, has Jack finally run out of luck? It was ok when sponsors were lining up to be involved in NASCAR. But now, they just aren't there. 47. 10andJoe posted: 03.11.2012 - 2:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) cjs3872 - I think another issue, obviously not before when even the master snake-oil salesman (Mikey) couldn't land a deal, but possibly now, could be that Bayne missed races last year with Lyme disease. Unfair as it is, I wouldn't be surprised if companies might look at that and shy away, branding Trevor (unfairly) as 'damaged goods'. 48. RCRandPenskeGuy posted: 03.11.2012 - 8:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) It's true that Bayne had sponsor troubles at MWR as well but Mikey is another owner who has had a number of sponsors leaving his team (Domino's, Burger King, UPS) so it's hard to put a finger on what is the direct cause of Bayne's lack of sponsorship. 49. DaleSrFanForever posted: 03.12.2012 - 3:39 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) RCRAndPenske, you nailed it. He has been with two organizations (MWR and RFR) that can't keep sponsors unless Mikey is there himself to constantly whore himself out for them, plus a 3rd that was falling apart at the seams (DEI). Put Trevor with HMS or JGR and they will have a full sponsorship package for him in no time. 50. It's also his first at a track other than Iowa, which he swept in 2011. It's his 38th top 10 in 76 NNS starts, giving him a career top 10 finishing % of 50% (10 top 10's in his first 39 starts). It's his 1st top 5 and 2nd top 10 in 3 Las Vegas starts. Mark Martin's 44 laps led are his most in an NNS race since he led 81 laps in his 2008 Las Vegas win. It's just his 24th career runner-up finish, versus 49 wins. In 7 Vegas starts Mark has 4 wins, 6 top 5's, 7 top 10's and a 2.0 avg fin. Elliott Sadler finished in the top 3 for a 3rd consecutive race to start 2012; his best finish in all of 2011 was 3rd three times. He's also led in every race for a total of 60 laps (181 laps led in 2011). It's his first top 5 in 6 Las Vegas starts. Trevor Bayne picked up his first top 5 of 2012 in 4th. Bayne has finishes of 6th, 5th and 4th in 3 Las Vegas starts in NNS. Brendan Gaughan picked up just his 7th career top 5 in 72 NNS starts, and first since a 3rd place finish at Road America in 2010. Cole Whitt was the highest finishing rookie in 6th, his 2nd top 10 in the first 3 races of 2012. He finished 8th in his only prior Las Vegas start, in the Truck Series last season. Austin Dillon makes it 2 rookies in the top 10 in 7th, his 3rd straight top 10 to start 2012 and 7th in his last 8 starts dating back to 2011. Justin Allgaier gets his first top 10 of 2012 in 8th. It's also his 50th career top 10 (111 starts), and has finished 8th or better in all 4 of his Las Vegas starts (6.2 avg fin, 2nd in 2011). After no top 10's in his first 23 NNS starts (26.8 avg fin), Sam Hornish Jr. has 8 top 10's in his last 13 (10.8 avg fin). Kasey Kahne gets his 2nd top 10 in 3 NNS starts this season. Despite regularly running up front and having a 5.7 avg start, he has just a 12.3 avg fin. Johanna Long improved on her 21st place finish from her NNS debut at Daytona, finishing 19th. 55.
