Luke Lambert made a great decision to give his driver the track position with changing only two tires on the last stop and this gambling was going to pay off. I couldn't see Elliott finishing worse than 3rd and caution with 10 to go gave him a great chance to compete for the victory and then... disaster came. Too bad Logano finished first after this... 3. Chin up kid, you'll come good. Also, can anybody tell me roughly how long a fuel run was? (I didn't watch the pre-race so missed the part where they spoke about that). The commentators never mentioned it, but it looked to me as if Justin Allgaier was stretching his fuel to make it one one more stop, whilst others might have needed two. I have no idea if that was the case or not, because they never even touched on the subject of fuel milage, but I was quite interested in seeing how that was going to play out. Of course, none of it matters now - and that might not have had anything to do with why the #31 stayed out as long as they did - but I always like seeing people thinking outside the box to try and come up with a different way of getting a result. 13. cjs3872 posted: 05.12.2012 - 12:16 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Why are people blaming Joey Logano for Elliott Sadler's crash. If anyone's to blame, it's Denny Hamlin. On that restart, Sadler was being pushed by Logano, as was the case on the prior restart without incident. Yes, the contact moved Sadler up the track slightly, but replays show that Hamlin was actually moving down the track, and when Sadler was pushed up, Hamlin hooked him into the wall. Had Hamlin held his line, Sadler would not have crashed. Now it is possible that Hamlin spun his tires, which moved him down an extra couple of feet, but had that not happened, Sadler would have had enough room to clear Denny Hamlin. Of note, due to the early crashes and start-and-parks, there were 14 cars out of the race by the halfway point (and I'm including Jeremy Clements and Mike Wallace in that total, even though they were classified as finishing the race), which resulted in another long green flag run, which would have gone to the finish had Kurt Busch not suffered a tire failure. Officially, 16 cars failed to finish the race, but it may just as well have been 18. My question is, how bad is the start-and-park situation going to be in the races that are not companion to the Cup series, such as next week's race at Iowa. In that race, there could be as much as one-third of the field (or 14 cars) start-and-park, and as few as 20 finish. 14. Schroeder51 posted: 05.12.2012 - 12:20 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Tough luck for Ryan Blaney. I'm sure he'll come out of this alright, though. Surprised that Jeremy Clements actually finished this race considering how slow his car was after being caught up in that crash. Good to see T. J. Bell get out of his car okay. He took a pretty hard hit into the inside wall. I got a few photos of his car after it crashed. Shame for Sadler, though...I think if he didn't crash he probably would have won if he got out in front and Logano and Hamlin battled for second for long enough. 15. First, that long stretch of green flag running left just 11 cars on the lead lap at the time of Busch's crash, so that helped. Then there was the fact that most of the last 25 laps were run under caution (though Busch had to go to the back because he pitted to early on the caution his crash caused). Then there was the fact that his car hit the SAFER barrier, which absorbed quite a bit of the impact not to mention the foam on the right side of his car also absorbed quite a bit of the impact). And Scrhoeder51, I'm surprised that NASCAR actually let Clements back on to the track after his crash, though he gained quite a few positions by doing so. Again, NASCAR should never let cars damaged like that and have to go to the garage due to a crash back on the track, something I've been complaining about for years, because it does create a safety hazard, not just for cars around him, but also because of what that car might drop onto the track. Cars with mechanical problems I have no problem with NASCAR letting back onto the track, but not wrecked cars. And if Derrike Cope was as slow as you say, then why didn't NASCAR flag him for being too slow. After all it was at Darlington in 2004 that a scary crash took place because of a car that was going too slow (Andy Hillenburg) trying to speed up, spin out, and get T-boned by Jeff Gordon as a result. 20. That's the sort of stuff I really like seeing, thinking on your toes and turning something bad into something good. Logano did exactly what he did on the prior restart, but nothing happened. But on the restart in question, Hamlin either spun his tires or moved down the track, and as a result, when Sadler's car was pushed slightly up the track, Hamlin hooked him into the wall, causing damage to his car that actually affected what happened on the final restart. On that final restart, Hamlin chose to take the outside, even though the inside is the preferred groove going into the first turn at Darlington. The reason being, if the damage to the right front on Hamlin's car did cause the right front tire to go down entering he first turn, he didn't want to take his teammate out with him, so he chose the outside as a precautionary measure in case the tire went down. It didn't, but he didn't want to take the chance of knocking two Joe Gibbs Racing cars out as the result of one failure. That put Logano in the proper spot to take the lead and the win, but Hamlin's car was handling so well that, even running on seven cylinders, he nearly passed Logano, a fact he admitted after the race. 30. I think that if there's a full field of 43, we may see up to one-third of the field, which would be 14 cars, start-and-park. Certainly, there will be at least 10 start-and-parks. There were seven in this race, and at least one or two other start-and-parks were involved in the lap 2 crash. Had they just parked, that would have meant there would've been up to nine start-and-parks in a race with Cup participation. If you take the participation of the Cup drivers and teams out of the mix, you could have up to 12-14 start-and-parks at Iowa. And if there's not a full field, which I think could be a distinct possibility, that could mean that more than a third of the field could be start-and-parks. 35. irony posted: 05.12.2012 - 12:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Let them park. That's because, with fewer cars trying to go the distance, more space is opened up for those that are racing. My major concern is that fewer opportunities will be there, because newer drivers and teams are, for the most part, not being given the opportunity to compete, whether by choice or by necessity. The top 30 rule (it's 30 in the Nationwide Series) is partly to blame for this, though in the Nationwide and truck Series, for a team to be exempt, it must at least try to qualify for all the races to be eligible for the exemption. That condition does not exist in the Cup series. As a result, there are already fewer than 30 teams that qualify for the exemption, though I don't know how many otherwise-eligible teams are no longer exempt. That may be why there are so many start-and-parks in the Nationwide Series. 37. 1995 Subaru WRX STi posted: 05.12.2012 - 2:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) If Hamlin doesn't move down, Sadler proably saves it and go on to either win or finish top 3. But as long as Hefty sponsors the 14, Jeff parks while Eric drives. I think Eric will return at Charlotte since it is 2 weeks away so that means Jeff only had one attempt at running a full race, so far. Nice to hear Carl in the broadcast booth. I like him better than any of the current driver broadcasters that ESPN uses (Craven, Wallace, Jarrett). Years from now he's got a great future in front of a camera once he retires. And if the Richard Childress Racing drivers don't step it up, Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. might make this year's Nationwide Series title fight such that they may as well stop it for the mercy of the competition, as he's gained a full race's worth of points on Elliott Sadler in just the last two races, and Austin Dillon and Sam Hornish, Jr., the only other two drivers with any kind of chance at the title, are just treading water right now. Except it's actually been his best "bad" season so far, to the point that it could turn out good. The proof's in the Cup championship, which neither of them have. One of them wins it this year, then it's proof that NNS could be a detriment. Then again, two drivers who have a combined 71 starts in Nationwide since 2005 have combined to win the last 7 Cup championships. And Joey Logano has 3 wins in Nationwide this season. It's his first win at Darlington in just his 2nd start, his last one being back in 2009. His 4 laps led are tied for his 2nd fewest in a win with Kansas in 2009, and his fewest was 1 lap led in last year's Daytona night race. Denny Hamlin led a race-high 103 laps, the 7th time in 133 starts he's led over 100 laps in a Nationwide race. Hamlin qualifies and finishes 2nd for a 2nd consecutive start, and finishes 2nd for the 13th time in his career. Brad Keselowski picks up his 5th top 3 finish of the season. In his other 4 starts, he has an average finish of 23.5. Sam Hornish Jr.'s the highest finishing Nationwide series regular in 4th, his 2nd top 5 in the last 3 races. It's his first top 10 in 2 Darlington starts; he qualified 12th and finished 11th back in 2008, his best career finish up until last season. Austin Dillon was the highest finishing rookie of the race in 5th, his 5th top 5 in 9 starts this season. It should be noted that four of them are 5th's, with his best in 2012 being 4th. But his 7 top 10's are tied with RCR teammate Elliott Sadler for 2nd most so far this year. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. earned his 5th career Nationwide Series pole and 1st of 2012. Stenhouse translated it into this series-leading 8th top 10 of the season, which includes 8 consecutive top 6 finishes; he's outscored the competition by 40 points over that span with a 3.2 average finish, best of anyone with multiple starts. It's his 2nd straight top 10 at Darlington, following a crash to end up 37th in his 1st start there in 2010. Brian Scott gets not only just his 2nd top 10 of the season but just his 4th top 20 (5 finishes of 34th or worse). It's his first top 10 in 4 Darlington starts (20.2 avg fin). Kurt Busch picks up his 4th top 10 in 5 Nationwide starts this season, his 2nd in 3 starts in the #54 Kyle Busch Motorsports car. James Buescher went his next 5 starts after his Daytona win without a top 10. Now he has back-to-back top 10's, his 7th and 8th in 42 career starts. He's sporting a 10.1 avg fin in 8 starts in 2012. Cole Whitt has back-to-back top 10's for the first time in his Nationwide career. It's his also his 2nd top 10 in 7 non-plate-track starts in 2012 (15.3 avg fin). Danica Patrick picked up just her 4th top 15 finish of the season, but 3 of them have come in the last 4 races (17th to 10th in points). 62. He went straight to the pits, not making it to the start/finish line to complete the lap, whereas Miller did (hence why he completed 2 laps and Blaney only one). 65. In the interview after it appeared the 18 year old was in tears. His career turned out okay though. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
