Ricky was fully in control of the points lead after that dominating Iowa win and Elliott's crash at Darlington. After the past 3 weeks, Elliott has a chance to put some distance on Ricky and bury him further in points. He didn't do himself any favors today by finishing 11th when he should have been a few spots higher. 9. I wanna talk about Rusty Wallace suddenly coming to life as a broadcaster after 5 miserable years. When it was announced he would be an announcer for ESPN's huge portion of the NASCAR schedule they picked up starting in 2007, I thought it was gonna be a slam dunk. Listening to his interviews as a driver over many years, I really thought there was no way he would flounder as an announcer. His answers were always well thought out, but with personality, no PC nonsense or sugar coating. Boy was I wrong! It has been painful to watch Rusty doing commentary to say the least. He has relied on awful broadcasting crutches, cliches, and catchphrases. "That's for sure!" "You go that right!" "These babies are flat flying!" etc. Worst of all, he provided almost zero insight to particular situations happening in the race from his perspective shaped by years behind the wheel racking up many wins and a championship in NASCAR's most difficult era. He also never called anyone out which goes straight in the face of the Rusty Wallace I grew up watching. For goodness sakes, he once pelted The Intimidator himself upside his head with a water bottle, blatently wrecked Jeff Gordon for a bump and run he had done over a year earlier (and inadvertantly set Jeff's 1998 season on fire), publically called a NASCAR black flag at Martinsville "bullshit" (and paid that fine to Bill France Jr in pennies), and told a FOX audience he would love to take Tony's middle finger and shove it up his ass. I wonder if being both an owner of a fledgeling NWide team and the father of one of the most pathetic drivers I've ever seen neutered him in the booth. As an owner, he had to attract sponsors to the company that bore his name. As a driver, since 1990, he only had to represent Miller Beer which allowed his true personality to shine through (the same thing that is helping Brad K right now). But having to represent companies that reached a broader audience meant keeping things in check more. And being Steve's Dad, he couldn't call ANYONE out since he wouldn't call his son (and driver for his team). Add all that to the restrictions that I'm sure the SUPER DUPER PC Disney-ESPN companies placed on him and he was simply useless on TV. But this year he decided to finally quit burning money and shut down his NWide teams (actually sponsorship issues forced his hand, but he didn't seem too tore up about it) and Steven (mercifully) was out of the NWide Series. And these last two telecasts, he has finally sounded like the Rusty Wallace I remember. The guy with an absolute, 100% No Bullshit policy. The guy who made this Earnhardt fan very worried. At Dover, he called Golden Boy Logano out in a big way for running over an underfunded car while well out front explaining how that other team was busting their butts just to make it to the race track and he just ran him over (translation: Logano, you are a Silver Spoon Asshole who knows nothing about hard work and struggling just to keep your head above water and you need to be brought down a few pegs). And in this race he went WAY off ESPN's script (that Danica is the only female racer that has ever existed) by giving a thorough follow up on Johanna Long after ESPN finally threw her a bone with a pit report and being described by Alan Bestwick as "worthy of note" (*I'm sarcastically clapping for Alan*) for running Top 15 all day in underfunded equipment by praising her driving performance in the race and mentioning she won the prestigious Late Model Snowball Derby, something that the "Danica is making history as a female racer, she is the only female ever to do anything good behind the wheel of a race car" camp are trying to get totally stricken from the record. Also, after Danica's 3rd unprovoked spin, he actually used the words "her fault" in reference to Danica, something that NEVER happens on TV. No excuses, no "she is learning, I'm impressed she just wrecked instead of driving off a cliff instead", he called it like it was. Basically he was the antithesis of FOX's "Good Ol' DW". Then, when Logano and Sadler were lining up on the front row for a restart, and it was asked if Sadler would race Joey different after the "Darlington incident" Rusty blurted out "I would!". THAT is Rusty Wallace. I don't know if this is something that will pass, but damn it has been good to hear the real Rusty again. I hope he is like this to stay. Welcome back old boy, I have missed you. 10. lugnut posted: 06.16.2012 - 8:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) It's always something for Menard. With the bad setups that Stenhouse has had the last couple of weeks, this is the time that Roush desperately needs at least one other car on the track to share notes, but because Stenhouse's #6 is the only car Roush is able to run due to sponsorship issues (and Stenhouse was effectively unsponsored today), they've gotten behind and with only Michael Annett in the Ford camp, Roush is going to have a hard time catching up. If Roush can't find a way to run a second car, he might be behind most of the rest of the year. After all the rest of the point leaders drive for multi-car teams. Elliott Sadler and Austin Dillon, the top two in points, drive for Richard Childress. Sam Hornish Jr., fourth in points, is part of a two-car Penske team, Cole Whitt, fifth in points is a teammate to Danica Patrick for Dale, Jr.'s team, and Justin Allgaier, sixth in points, has several teammates at Turner Motorsports. Could 2012 be the final year for Roush in the Nationwide Series, and in turn, could this be Ford's last year in the Nationwide Series? 13. At least according to Tony Jr and ESPN's website. According to the web article, her first spin was her trying to avoid a loose car in front of her (the guy who finished 2nd who bobbled slightly a good 5 car lengths ahead of her). The second one according to Eury was Austin Dillon intentionally getting her loose with air (it had nothing to do with her moving down 2 lanes into his path and that he never touched her) and "playing dirty tricks". Funny, when him and his Dad were crewing that #3 car in the same Series 20 years earlier doing the exact same things, it was Dale being "crafty" and "seeing the air". And the third spin, according to the article, was because Brad Sweet got her loose. Even though Hall of Famer Rusty Wallace disagrees. Seriously, this Danica Propaganda is getting ridiculous. This isn't China. We are not a Communist State. The truth is right there in front of us. ESPN is probably administering electroshock therapy on Rusty right now by order of Walt Disney's estate and Brian France. The thing regarding Logano's win was that his car had a big horsepower advantage on restarts, as he was clear of the second place car by the start-finish line. However, he couldn't pull away from whoever was second because the draft played an important role at Michigan for once. James Buescher had a shot at Logano on the final lap, but made his move too soon. However, he shouldn't be ashamed of making that error. In the 2001 spring race at Michigan in the Cup series, Ricky Rudd, a veteran of the highest order, made that same mistake when he battled Jeff Gordon for the win. He made his move on him a lap too soon. He actually led at the white flag, but made the move too soon, as Gordon got back around him by the exit of turn two and held on for his 55th and Hendrick Motorsports' 100th win. Had Rudd made that move on the last lap, he would have won, so Buescher is not the first driver to make such an attempt too early. And Rusty, Austin Dillon is AHEAD of Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. in points, not behind, as he's only trailing his much more experienced teammate, Elliott Sadler. And I think that Stenhouse may be on the verge of falling out of contention in coming weeks, unless something changes, because Roush is falling behind, and only running one car, that's going to be tough to overcome. As I said in an earlier post, being reduced to one car is finally catching up with Roush, and don't be surprised if this is Roush's final season in the Nationwide Series, possibly along with Ford. 29. Granted, I don't think he's gonna win a heck of a lot of Cup races, but the timing of that comment is poor. Also, I wouldn't say that he's taking seat time away from Ryan Truex or Darrell Wallace Jr, as they wouldn't be in the car regardless had Joey not been in yesterday's race, cause they dont have the sponsorship. Ryan Truex SHOULD have a full time gig, but the reason he's part time is because his sponsor isn't footing a full time bill. Take a look at McDowell in the 20 earlier. He had the sponsor by his side, so he gets to run the car. 30. Let's not forget he is the same guy who got shitcanned by his own cousin after 6 win 2004 season (of course they ended up blaming it on Teresa, but the truth is Dale Jr didn't think he could win a championship with Tony Jr, and when he realized he couldn't win one with anyone, asked for him back). Um, what? Draft has played a huge role in just about every Nationwide COT race on tracks sized 1.5 miles and greater. Michigan has always been EXTREMELY draft-dependent since the switch to the Nationwide COT. Same went for even Cali this year. It was practically pack racing until the tires wore, and then draft still had a huge effect. Today was nothing new or more draft-dependent than we've already seen since Nationwide has gone to the COT. And hey DSFF, I believe it was Tony Eury Sr who was Jr's crew chief for his 6 win 2004 season. They went to Tony Eury Jr later on. 35. That's not true. He had a solid 2008 season, but since the #88 team began the 2009 season struggling, Tony Jr was replaced after the disastrous Coke 600. In hindsight that was a bad move, since it led to the inept Lance McGrew taking over the #88 for the next 1.5 years, which was an almost career killing move for Dale Jr and Mark Martin. Thankfully Lance is now in the K&N series rather than being a Cup crew chief. Regardless, Tony Jr is a solid crew chief. He made the chase in 2 out 3 full time seasons and won a race each in those years. He also has a Shootout and Duel win, in addition to winning the first race with the Nationwide CoT. Actually, if I remember right, drafting did play a little role the first race after the last repave in 1995, but then seemed to disappear the mext time the circuit returned in Michigan later that year. And Spen, the problem with Buescher trying that move in turn one was that, even had he made it work, Logano might very well have gotten back by him by the start-finish line. That's why I said he made it too soon. And I'm not entirely sure his car was that much better than Buescher's in turn four. The two real advantages Logano had was his Toyota engine on restarts, which allowed him to pull clear of the field by the start-finish line, and his experience, as he's much more expericenced in those situations than Buescher is. Now he may have had a better car, and maybe the draft was the only reason Buescher was able to keep up, but I think Buescher's move was ill-timed. Had Buescher waited and used the draft in turn three, there's a better chance he might have drawn even with Logano in turn three and might have beaten him in a drag race to the line, but then again he might not have, but it would have given himn a better chance to win. Today's going to be a big day in sports, with the Michigan Cup race followed by the final round of the U.S. Open at the Olympic Club in San Francisco and the third game of the NBA Finals (which I won't be watching because of the U.S. Open, but must be mentioned), that's for sure. 42. Blake Feese and Boston Reid were going to split a full schedule for Lowe's in the #5 Busch car in '03 or '04. When neither of them had won a race after a few starts each (or finished in the top-five, to be honest), they were bumped for Kyle because the sponsor wanted victories, not to build future careers. In an unstable economy, the sponsors want a sure thing, and Cup drivers are that sure thing, both for exposure and results. 47. irony posted: 06.17.2012 - 7:40 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Kurt Busch has now spun more times this weekend than Danica. 48. ch posted: 06.17.2012 - 7:54 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Thanks for fixing the lap error! His 14th wins rank him 4th behind only Brad Keselowski (18), Carl Edwards (24) and Kyle Busch (40) over that stretch. It's his 4th win in his last 5 starts, and his 5 wins in 2012 tie his career high from 2009. James Buescher picks up his 3rd career top 2 finish in 45 Nationwide starts (2nd at IRP in 2011, 1st at Daytona this year). It's his 2nd top 5 and 6th top 10 in 11 starts this season, and his 9.0 avg fin ranks him 4th among drivers with at least 10 starts so far this season. In fact, his avg fin in Nationwide is better than it is in the Trucks where he runs full time (9.6 in 7 races). Based on points per race, if Buescher were running full time he'd be 4th in the standings just 28 points out of the lead and 1 point behind Stenhouse for 3rd. Kurt Busch picked up his 4th top 5 in 6 starts for Kyle Busch Motorsports this season (8 starts overall), his 3rd straight top 5 and 5th straight top 10. Cole Whitt was the highest finishing rookie of the race in 4th, leading a career-high 10 laps in the race. It's his 3rd finish of 4th this season, his career-best finish in Nationwide to date, and his 4th top 10 in the last 6 races (2 in the first 7 races of the season). Austin Dillon earned his first career Nationwide Series pole in his 24th start in the series (12 poles in 52 career Truck starts). Dillon backed it up with his 7th top 5 of the season, tied with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. for the most in the series; Dillon has finished no better than 4th, versus 3 wins and 6 top 3 finishes for Stenhouse. Dillon's 10 top 10's are also tied with RCR teammate and series point leader Elliott Sadler for the most this season. Sam Hornish Jr. picked up his 6th top 10 of the season. Through 13 races in 2012, Hornish has as many top 5's (2) and top 10's (6) as he had in 13 starts in 2011 but with a better average finish (13.1 in 2011, 10.2 in 2012). Michael McDowell made his 2nd start of 2012 for JGR, first in the #20, and got his 2nd top 10 of the season. In 7 starts with JGR, McDowell has 2 top 5's, 6 top 10's and a 7.3 avg fin. Paul Menard finished in the top 10 for a 10th consecutive start dating back to 2010. The last time he didn't get a top 10 was at Phoenix in November of 2010. Brian Scott has back-to-back top 10's for the first time in 2012, his 3rd in the last 5 races (12.2 avg fin, versus 26.4 avg fin in the first 8 races of the season). Brad Keselowski gets his first stand-alone top 10 finish of 2012; his first 6 top 10's of the year were all top 3 finishes. It's his 3rd straight top 10, his longest streak of the season. Johanna Long finished a career-best 16th, her 4th top 20 finish and first lead-lap finish in 9 starts this season. 50.
