Dillon went backwards over the finish line and then cars started piling in; Austin took two very hard hits afterwards but was OK. Long drove a great race and would likely have finished in the top 10 but for the last caution; alas, her car got torn to pieces in the last-lap scrum. The debris caution at the end was legit; Townley's wounded car dumped a tire carcass on the yellow line. 6. 10andJoe posted: 07.06.2012 - 11:11 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Also: Brian Scott has worse luck than Jeff Gordon, and THAT is saying something. 7. Kerry's boy had raced up into fourth position when he got hit in the rear by Stenhouse and spun into the outside wall ruining his night. Trying to avoid Earnhardt's wreck Danica Patrick spuns and crashed his special white GoDaddy car into the inside wall hard. It was a wreck somewhat similar to her one in the Gatorade Duel Sprint Cup race back in Feb., last that wreck she took her hands off the wheel before impact and it paid off as the steering column ended up breaking leaving the wheel bent much higher in the car than normal. 8. 1995z71 posted: 07.06.2012 - 11:17 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Stenhouse took out some good cars. Austin Dillon, running third at the time, checked up slightly, which caused Michael Annett to get into him, spinning him out and causing that wild crash at the finish. NASCAR may eventually have to think about there GWC's at the plate tracks, because every time there's one (or more), it ends in disaster. And where Dillon's car spun out is where you worry about cars getting airborne, and posibly into the catchfencing. Fortunately, that didn't happen, but there's potential, and very possible disaster at the end of every one of these races now. 10. RaceFanX posted: 07.06.2012 - 11:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The big one occured on lap 67 when Mike Wallace and Kevin Harvick tried to switch places while running near the front of the pack. The resulting crash involved 14 cars. The wreck included Kurt and Kyle Busch. Kurt came back to win despite overheating badly while pushing Austin Dillon in the closing laps. Kyle ended up 7 laps down repairing his damage but came back to still run with the leaders in the closing laps although his #54 then wrecked even harder when he hit the crashing Dillon after taking the checkered flag. 11. ch posted: 07.06.2012 - 11:26 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) I really enjoyed that race. I don't know why, but this particular event seemed different than the other races where the 2 car tandem style has been seen. Great runs for a lot of smaller teams and drivers tonight that I want to give a shout out to... Mike Bliss ran in the back today for the first half playing the conservative strategy and it payed off in the form of an overdue top 10 for that 44 team. Timmy Hill once again displayed his plate talents in being able to hang around in the second group all day until the end. I REALLY want to mention this... On the last restart when Kurt Busch got in the middle and started going backwards, Stenhouse gave him a push which helped him gain enough momentum to win the race. The thing is, guess who gave the 6 the shove? Timmy Hill did. So I attribute some of Kurt's being able to salvage the win from a precarious position to Timmy. So congrats to him on another top 10. Great runs for Jeremy Clements and Johanna Long. Almost got to the top 10. Danny Efland should be Mr. 'where did he come from' for this race. Driving 'the other JD Motorsports car' again this week, he came back from a lap down in the mid 30's to achieve a great 13th place finish. So much attention was put on JD Motorsports this week, but it was all for the 01. This certainly should remind people that Mr. Davis has TWO full time teams. Congrats to Eric McClure to having a solid return to a track so similar to where his horrific crash was. That takes guts for a father, husband, and family man to return to going 190+ mph after having a nearly career ending hit. I have one more opinion to share, and this time its about DANICA PATRICK. I did not understand how she completely destroyed possibly the strongest car out there! Yes it was a hard hit, but it was all SELF-INDUCED. She turned hard left on instinct the instant she saw the smoke. Just look at the replay and watch Timmy Hill, running directly ahead of her. He saw the smoke, started to brake and held the car steady without making any rash decisions and carefully directed the car out of trouble. And look at that, he was rewarded with a top 10 for his job well done! Danica can make as many excuses as she wants as to why she did not come out of Daytona with a top 5, but the fact of the matter is that it was her inability to make logical decisions and to stay calm, cool, and collected inside the car that ruined her night and caused such a hard hit. 12. 1995z71 posted: 07.06.2012 - 11:31 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Another Note: Morgan Shepherd withdrew 13. Plate racing is tough, nobody thinks less of him now. That is called maturity. A lot of current drivers could learn from him. Hard hit for Danica, glad she is ok. I know am a "hater" according to some, but I really think she could have limited her damage on that crash. Cutting across traffic like that leads to bad things. Had she just held her line and whoaed her down, she might could have escaped with minimal damage. Hulluva job by the Phoenix team getting Kurt's car repaired. However, from the spotters' stand he couldn't tell that there was a car to her inside, and when she turned left, she got punted. Now onto some of the racing stuff: What a great race last night! I was so excited to see Logano and Sadler get separated on the last lap that I didn't care who won after that. Luckily it was Kurt driving an unsponsored Phoenix Racing car, which made the moment even better. To see his and his crew's reactions after he won is what make's this sport so great; seeing the reactions of the guys who put countless hours into these cars and get to see them win the race in the end. On the budget that that team has, it was a beautiful site and made me proud to be a race fan again as it was like a "dream come true" for that team. Also, that's Phoenix Racing's 1st win since Mike Bliss won at Charlotte in May 2009. Stenhouse was a great drafter all race long, especially with Joe Nemechek in the 1st part of the race and with Kurt Busch at the end. Unfortunately, he tore up a lot of race cars in the process, including Brad Sweet in a single-car crash, and Jeffrey Earnhardt and Danica. I'm not sure why he was on Earnhardt's left-rear like that on the backstretch with enough room to move over to the right. These cars have more weight on the left than on the right, so any added pressure on the left can result in a spin. I didn't see Danica get hit from behind, but I did see her turn left across Eric McClure's car. I can't remember seeing a steering column break like that before. If she would've just stayed in her lane like Timmy Hill in front of her, but instead she panicked and ended up wrecking herself. Remember, she did the same thing in the Daytona 500. What would've been just a single-car crash turned into a 6 or 7 car pileup. We need more people like Mike Wallace and Brad Keselowski in NASCAR: Ones who take the blame for their own mistakes, and who don't blame others for their own misfortunes. Mike made a mistake moving down the track as he and Harvick made a swap and made contact with James Buescher, resulting in 14 cars wrecking in turn 2, some of which had winning cars. Mike didn't make excuses like saying that the car got loose, or that Buescher should've given him room (a la Todd Bodine, last week), or that other cars can move him when too close (a la Kyle Busch, Daytona 2010). He accepted full responsibility for causing that wreck, which I'm sure was difficult for him being one of the most experienced Nationwide drivers out there. For that, I have even greater respect for him. I also gained more respect for one of my favs Brad Keselowski for his being involved in that big wreck triggered by Mike Wallace. Rather than point the blame firmly at Mike for causing the wreck, or going on a Ryan Newman-esque rant about how restrictor plate races suck, or being like the JGR divas and blame other cars for not giving them any room, Brad simply said that "that's racing" and brought up the fact that tandem cars who swap do so at their own peril because they lose so much speed to the cars that are in tandem drafts. But it wasn't just the words he used, but his body language as well that I liked. There was no eye rolling, no hand gestures, no voice-pitch change, and no sarcasm. Just a young, seasoned driver who's far more mature than he's given credit for who realizes that these things happen and there's no sense in pointing the finger at anyone or anything because this is the nature of restrictor plate racing. This act of humility is something I wish more drivers took upon themselves to do. I could list the names of all the drivers who don't do this, but I'm sure most of you guys have an idea. Solid runs by some of the smaller teams, including Mike Bliss and Timmy Hill with top ten finishes, as well as Jeremy Clements, Johanna Long, Danny Efland, Jason Bowles, Tayler Malsam, Josh Richards, Robert Richardson, Eric McClure, Blake Koch, and Bryan Silas. It's a shame some of these cars were damaged after crossing the finish line, including Jo Long, Bowles, and Richardson. Richardson was the one who slammed hard into Austin Dillon as he came up the race track into the wall. Best career finish for Long, Richards, and Silas, the latter of whom finished 20th in his series debut in a sometimes start & park car. McClure looked to be on is way to his 1st career top ten, but that last restart killed him like several others I mentioned above. Talladega is better for the smaller teams because there's a lot of pack racing. Daytona is mostly tandem racing, which is killer for the smaller teams who can't hook up with a bigger team. Speaking of which, there were only 4 S&P cars in the race, which is the least amount since Daytona in February when there was just 1. Mike Harmon and Joey Gase were doing the Morgan Shepherd method of racing as long as possible without damaging the race car. Jeffrey Earnhardt, Mike Wallace, Joe Nemechek, Bobby Santos, and Casey Roderick were all having nice runs before getting caught up in wrecks. I'm not sure what was wrong w/ Nemechek's car as he avoided the wreck, but it was said that he had been on & off pit road and was multiple laps down. Santos did a nice job and made it up to 5th at one point in his 1st Nationwide race since the 2011 season opener. Elliott Sadler made a great move of going to the bottom and narrowly missing that big wreck. Come November, we'll see whether that move will earn him a championship or not. Thanks to Michael Annett (who earned back-to-back career best finishes) getting into Austin Dillon as he checked up coming to the line, Sadler's point lead is at 2. It may have been one point, but it could be a difference maker as the season moves on. Also, I want to give ESPN a shout out for actually putting on an exciting qualifying session, which included more interviews with smaller team drivers and several side-by-side shots of driver and crew chief during qualifying runs, including for Jeff Green and Josh Wise, who both start & parked. They followed that with showing a great race, albeit with a lot of commercial breaks in the 1st half. This race shows that ESPN is capable of showing a great race...when it wants to. You might say ESPN is the Dale Jr. of NASCAR broadcasting ;) 38. TheTruthâ?¢ posted: 07.07.2012 - 1:00 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Rusty, it must have been a crowd of perverts." Honestly, when I first saw her SI photos, my thought was "oh my God, I hope nobody sees me looking at these, I'm gonna have to register and stay at least 500 feet away from schools". Between her tiny stature and lack of any curves (I'm in the Sir Mix A Lot club on curves) and her boyish face, I don't understand the "she is hot" sentiment. But to each their own. Besides, looks don't matter. My last gf was a smoking hot Latina, but certifiably insane. My favorite gf I have ever had was "homely" to be kind, but wonderful. I still regret not making that one work. 54. Rusty posted: 07.07.2012 - 5:00 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Danica's looks don't matter to me. I just don't get why she is so loved by fans and media alike. She isn't all that talented, her accomplishments in top racing series just isn't very impressive. She doesn't have a great personality that people can relate with, she acts like a brat a lot of the time and has a sailor mouth inside the car to rival the Busch brothers. Though, I give her credit for handling herself well after Road America when she had every right to be pissed. They also interviewed her at the track after her crash last night and she was handling herself well, until he end when she started to get into a "Oh, woe is me" kind of attitude. I'm just struggling to figure out why she gets so much love. 55. DaleSrFanForever posted: 07.07.2012 - 5:18 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Looks certainly don't matter as far as racing. Hell, I am a Brad fan. He looks like a young, blond Don Knotts. Seriously, think about it sometimes. I am also at a loss to explain her populatity, but then again, I am also a HUGE loss to describe Dale Jr's popularity. Even with the Earnhardt last name, that only takes you so far. Worst of all, the longer his winless streak went the more fans he seemed to pick up. The more of his slacker attitude that came through, the more people seemed to like him. What happened to the days where America fell in love with Michael Jordan, somebody who was so competitive it bordered on a mental illness. Or Earnhardt who cared about winning the next race and nothing else. 56. The person who used my name also has the same real first name as me, or trying to do a bad job of impersonating me when I never been a Danica fan. 57. Daniel posted: 07.07.2012 - 6:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Dale Jr.'s popularity is basically because of his dad getting killed in a crash just like when there suddenly became many more Earnhardt fans once he got killed. That's the same reason Sr. himself only won the Most Popular Driver in '01, because he got killed. The same reason Kerry Earnhardt won the fan vote in the '04 all star race. That's also why Truex Jr. won the fan vote in the '05 race, why he was the Busch series MPV in '04 and '05, and why Keselowski won the MPV in '08 and '09. 58. JGR moved Joey Logano to the #18 and Clint Bowyer made his first start of the year, driving the #20. I have to wonder, why did JGR have to go to Bowyer for this? Why couldn't they let Ryan Truex have at it. He nearly won last time out in Dover, give the guy a shot with Hamlin in pain. Unless Dollar General REALLY pushed for a Cup driver, but still, it sucks to see guys like Ryan Truex and Darrell Wallace, Jr. miss out on chances while a guy who already has won a championship in the series and is on his way to making the chase gets the call. 59. I'm a Danica fan since her Atlantic days and I can assure you I'm not a pervert or find her attractive. She's somewhat cute but I don't desire to see her naked. I'm also not a big Dale Jr fan. I was when he was in the Busch Series because I was a fan of his father, but I never really connected to him in Cup, at least after his rookie year. 62. For illusion she was naked they used shot on her head and used some dialogs with sexual subtext.. For example commercial when Danica was in the shower. They used only shot on her head.. That doesnt mean she was naked.. GoDaddy commercials have sexual subtext for men. Carl commercial have sexual subtext for women. You must learn - sponsor pay bills.. If sponsor wants commercial action, driver must do.. If not, driver lost sponsor and ride.. For example Viagra was Mark Martin's sponsor and he did commercials for Viagra.. 69. The 3 other races were won by JGR Toyotas (Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin swept the 2008 races and Joey Logano won last year's July race). The last Nationwide race at Daytona won by someone not in a Chevy or Toyota was the July 2004 race, in which Mike Wallace won driving a Ford. Heck, going beyond that only 5 times in the history of the Nationwide Series at Daytona has someone won not driving a GM manufactred car. The three JGR Toyota victories already mentioned, Wallace's already mentioned 2004 win in a Fred Biagi owned Ford, and in 1995 Chad Little won in a Greg Pollex owned Ford. The majority of those GM wins were done by Chevy but Dale Earnhardt, Darrell Waltrip, Geoffrey Bodine, Randy LaJoie and Joe Nemechek have won in Pontiacs. Bobby Allison also won in 1988 driving a Buick. It is also worth noting that the Nationwide Series didn't start returning to Daytona in July for a 2nd race until 2002, so Ford and Dodge haven't had as many opportunities to cash in until recent years, in which Chevy has still managed to maintain their dominance. 70. Many drivers are loyal to just one manufacturer in all the series they're competing. 80. RaceFanX posted: 04.19.2017 - 9:05 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) That's likely a result of this era, Kurt Busch was a bit of a pariah for much of 2012 after that stunt that cost him his ride at Penske, angered his sponsors, and darn near ended his NASCAR career. He was down the power chart so much I don't know if he had official factory backing that season so no one cared if he split time between Kyle Busch's self-owned Toyotas and James Finch's Chevys (Finch was his Cup owner at the time). Kurt took his licks, rebuilt his reputation, and rose back up the NASCAR rankings by the end of the season so it's unlikely he would be allowed to do that again. 81.
