As we all know, Carl Edwards is famous for doing backflips after his wins. Well, Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., Edwards' Roush teammate, can now also do backflips, and Stenhouse, who finished fourth, needled Edwards about his backflips after the race, both on a post-race interview and in victory lane. I wonder when we're going to see Stenhouse start to do backflips after his wins, and if he's as much of a daredevil as he admits to being, we may see him do more than just a standing backflip after his wins, if he starts doing them. As I thought might happen when video of Stenhouse's backflip first surfaced, Carl Edwards now has competition on that front. In fact, had Edwards and Stenhouse finished 1-2 today, I wouldn't have been surprised if both of them would have done backflips in front of the main grandstands. And as much of a competitor as Stenhouse is at everything he does (remember the Ricky vs. Trevor competitions last year?), you know that he's going to try to one-up Edwards. Who knows, they might try to start a competition of their own. 3. I hope success isn't softening him. I could care less about him giving away an NWide race. I care because he does his best when he has that edge (see Kentucky). I don't like what I saw in the end here. Better not be getting too fat and happy. Also, Carl had no need to apologize to the 18. That was completely Logano's fault. Carl had his fender there, and Joey cut across. Also, we saw another patented Kyle Busch Giveup. After Hornish got around him, he threw in the towel. 6. 10andJoe posted: 08.11.2012 - 6:29 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #2 sponsor: Charter Communications #12 sponsor: PPG Envirobase High Performance #18 sponsor: BuyMyTronics.com (no Game Stop logos) #23 sponsor: North Texas Pipe #40 sponsor: The Motorsports Group #42 sponsor: The Motorsports Group #75 sponsor: SunEnergy 1/Bosch Solar Energy There was a sponsor on the #01 but I couldn't make it out. #70 owner: Robinson-Blakeney Racing. His first at Watkins Glen, he has now won at all 3 current NNS road courses. I don't like Carl, but it did bring some normalcy back to the NNS with the #60 back out there. That team has always been a force since the old Mark Martin days with Winn Dixie. Ryan Truex locks up in the first corner of the race, cuts through the grass and takes her out. It is peculiar that she always seems to be in the worst possible place at the worst possible time, but what could she have really done differently - besides qualify better? I suppose if she hadn't slowed down, Truex might have just clipped her toward the rear of her car and there would have been less damage. Still, she's listening to her spotter, who just keeps saying "slow down, slow down, one in the grass, slow down, slow down, go low" and then they hit. But that doesn't matter, people who didn't even watch the race are going to see her dead last, assume she screwed up and say "well, that's Danica for ya" 20. He never had a chance to get back to Carl, but his post-race interview probably summed it up pretty well, as he raced clean and hopes to get that same respect back in the Chase when Brad is in and Carl likely isn't. 30. But I also mentioned that I thought it was somewhat cruel, whether or not it was true. The reason I said that was that the poster I was responding to thought that it had been so long that Carl Edwards had won a race, that he would completely forget what to say in victory lane, as far as mentioning sponsors, and everything else goes in a victory lane interview, thought that he neded a cue card, much like what happens in the TV and movie world, where whatever's being said is actually being read off a script, and I think that was an unfair comment about Edwards forgetting what to say in victory lane, becuase that's what I think it implied. 32. DaleSrFanForever posted: 08.11.2012 - 10:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) In all fairness cjs, there was pretty clearly somebody standing behind the pit reporter in victory lane holding up a sheet of paper for Carl, and it was caught on camera. My point about Danica is that usually when she is swept up in an incident like this, they replay it every chance they get making it "the story of the race" and pointing out how it wasn't her fault, which this one wasn't, about 100 times. Has ESPN finally given in to the race fans and will start treating her like just another driver? The way it was kinda brushed over (I missed it when it happened initially), I figured it must have been her fault. You can imagine my surprise when they finally showed the replay late in the race. Also her interview confused me. She talked about "wishing you hadn't done certain things". I figured she was talking about messing up and crashing, but that couldn't have been the case. Was she talking about her move to NASCAR? Is it hitting home to her that she has basically sold her competitive soul to her sponsors, that they are in control of her professional career, and success is not a priority for Team Danica? That she needs to take back control of her own career if she ever hopes to achieve major success? Kinda curious. 33. 10andJoe posted: 08.11.2012 - 10:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The #42 and #47 went to the back of the field before the start (driver's choice). 34. That wasn't my point, although it's quite ridiculous. My point was that for someone, anyone to say that just because a driver of Edwards' caliber hasn't been to victory lane in what, for him, seems like an eternity, that he wouldn't know what to do or say. In fact, I think that was one of the things that Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. gave him a ribbing for, not doing any backflips because he hasn't won in so long. (Ricky has even learned how to do a backflip since Carl last won and it remains to be seen if we'll begin seeing Ricky do them when he wins. I hope he does, just to see how he goes about it and compare his flips to that of Edwards.) But unless I'm mistaken, they didn't do that for Jeff Gordon when he won at Phoenix in the spring of 2011, or at Texas in 2009, nor do I remember them doing that for Dale Earnhardt, Jr. or Greg Biffle when they broke long winless streaks earlier this year. 36. murb posted: 08.11.2012 - 11:33 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I only saw the first third of the race. For better or for worse/right or wrong, in IndyCar being a female driver was enough; even when there were other female drivers running (Ana Beatriz, Simona de Silvestro, *cough* Milka Duno) she handily outperformed them. That's not the case in NASCAR - when you get the sheer amount of cubic dollars JR, SHR and GoDaddy have been throwing at Danica, eventually even the "tamest" backers start getting antsy when the question of "what have you done for me lately?" comes up, and (as has been pretty much beat into everyone's head here, or at least the ground, by now) Johanna Long's record looks pretty decent compared to Danica's. It gives him 8 consecutive seasons with a victory, just one back of Mark Martin's record 9 in a row (Kyle Busch is sitting on 8 in a row and can tie Mark if he can get a win this year). It's Carl's 3rd career win on a road course, 1 each at Road America, Montreal and Watkins Glen. Brad Keselowski finishes in the top 2 for a 3rd consecutive start, with his 3rd runner-up finish of 2012 (first since the first two races of the season) and the 13th of his career (versus 20 wins). It's Keselowski's 6th straight top 10 finish on a road course in NNS, and his best ever finish in 10 career road course starts in the series. Sam Hornish Jr. earned his 1st career Nationwide Series pole and 1st ever pole on a road course between Indycar and NASCAR. He was the highest-finishing series regular in the race in 3rd, the 2nd straight race where a Cup driver won that he's done it. Hornish extends his career-high top 10 streak to 9 races, and has 3 straight top 3 finishes to outscore points leader Elliott Sadler by 18 points over that span. Hornish also picked up his 20th top 10 in 54 career Nationwide starts, but all coming in his last 31 starts. Ricky Stenhouse Jr.'s 4th place finish is his career best on a road course; his previous best was 8th at Road America in 2011, and it's just his 2nd top 10 in 7 career road course starts in Nationwide (15.0 avg fin). It's Stenhouse's 7th consecutive finish of 9th or better (5 top 5's, 5.0 avg fin), during which he's tied with Sam Hornish Jr. for the most points scored. Stenhouse now leads the series in both top 5's (12) and top 10's (16), taking those marks away from the two RCR drivers. Ron Fellows picks up his 11th top 5 in 23 career Nationwide starts, all coming on road courses. 6 of those top 5's are in 12 starts at Watkins Glen, where he has top 10's in his last 4 starts. But Fellows hasn't finished better than 5th at the Glen since his last win there back in 2001 (3 wins and a 2nd from 1998-2001). Kyle Busch gets just his 4th top 10 in 12 Nationwide starts this season. His 16.5 avg fin this year (12 of 21 races) would be his worst in a Nationwide season since 17.2 (34 of 35 races) in 2006. Kasey Kahne has just 2 top 10's in his last 5 Nationwide starts, despite a pole and 2 front row starts over that span. Paul Menard finishes in the top 10 for a 12th consecutive Nationwide Series start, dating back to Homestead in 2010. Justin Allgaier finishes in the top 10 for the first time in 4 Watkins Glen starts (18.0 avg fin); it's just his 4th top 10 in 10 road course starts (18.9 avg fin), but his 3rd straight. Brian Scott gets his first top 10 in the last 7 races, and just his 2nd top 10 in 8 career road course starts. Miguel Paludo finishes 13th in just his 2nd career Nationwide Series start, both coming on road courses. Michael Annett has now finished 11th or better in 7 consecutive races, but that includes 5 top 6 finishes. Ryan Truex suffers his worst finish in 12 starts for Joe Gibbs Racing (9.3 avg fin). Austin Dillon suffers his worst finish of 2012 in 23rd, his first finish outside of the top 20. 49. Not to take pride in other's misfortune, but it is a little refreshing to see money for once not automatically equal production. 57. cjs3872 posted: 08.17.2012 - 1:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) DSFF, you'd be surprised at how often money does NOT always equal production in sports. If it did, the Yankees would win the World Series every year, the Lakers would win the NBA championship every year, and the Cowboys or Redskins would be in the Super Bowl every year. It doesn't always work that way. In fact, in the NFL, neither the Cowboys or Redskins have even gotten to the title game since 1995, and the Yankees have only been to the World Series once in the last eight years (2009, when they won it). And "dream teams" don't really work very often in sports. In NASCAR, it didn't work in 1987, when Darrell Waltrip was teamed with Waddell Wilson at Hendrick Motorsports, and it rarely works in the other sports, as well. In fact, they talk about all the super teams" in NASCAR these days. In my mind, the only true "super team" in modern racing history occurred from 1970-'72, when co-owners Parnelli Jones (a racing legend himself) and Vel Miletich teamed drivers Al Unser, Joe Jeonard, and Mario Andretti (who joined Vel's-Parnell Jones in 1972) with George Bignotti to form the greatest team in auto racing history, winning three consecutive championships (two with Leonard and one with Unser) and consecutive Indanapolis 500s in 1970 and '71 (Unser and Leonard would have been 1-2 at Indy in 1971 if not for a mechanical failure on Leonard's car), and finished 2-3 in the '72 Indy 500 with Unser and Leonard (it would have been 2-3-4 had Andretti not run out of fuel on the final lap). But it began to fall apart in 1973 when Bignotti left for Pat Patrick's team (where Gordon Johncock won the Indianapolis 500), then Leonard got hurt in 1974, and Andretti decided to go F1 racing in 1975, and the team finally ceased operations in 1977. The oral of this story is that, while money is important in sports (and real life), just throwing money around is useless without putting the right people together. 58. Now,will Danica pull out of line like she did at Watkins Glen to pick em off one by one,or will she pull out of line at the drop of the green to storm to the front. On the pace lap Jacques and Danica will be glancing at each other while thinking "should I or shouldn't I? Meanwhile,Hornish will be glancing in his mirror wondering if Danica holds a grudge. I'm betting on the princess to crash #9 NW car and #13 YTD. 1st lap should be a barnburner!! Maybe she will just settle in and hope for a top 10 finish. 60. 10andJoe posted: 08.22.2012 - 6:43 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) #99 sponsor: Delta Comercial, S.A./IMCA - that is the correct, Spanish spelling (one M). 61. 10andJoe posted: 08.28.2012 - 2:43 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) -As of this race, Benny Gordon was no longer eligible for Rookie of the Year, being no longer able to qualify for the minimum number of races required. 62. numbah10hatah posted: 07.15.2014 - 1:18 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Nationwide Series debut for Eric Curran. 63. Edwards won 38 Busch races in 245 starts but this one was only his second triumph on a road course after his win in the rain at Montreal in 2009. 67. In 2010, he gave Ford its first win that year at Road America. And finally, he won at Watkins Glen in 2012. Pretty interesting that till 2014, he was winless on road courses in Cup, but pretty good at them in Xfinity. Road courses aren't just about the best car - the level of experience on them can make a difference too. 68.
