A good finish wasn't in the cards as some fan pulled a 'Dick Johnson at Bathurst' and threw a shoe on the track for some reason. Patrick hit the shoe, which came apart on impact, and the rogue footwear broke something under her car causing her to fall back and eventually have to pit for repairs, losing laps and any chance at even scoring a top-20. 10. In front of his hometown fans on the track named for his father where he has never won Villeneuve rolled the dice on fuel and almost pulled it off despite some green-white-checkers. Justin Allgaier passed him on the final lap when it looked like the Penske #22 Dodge finally ran dry but then Jacques came back up to speed, the Formula One world champion had to settle for third. For Allgaier it's a bit of redemption, he lost the Busch race at Road America last year on fuel milage. Unexpected triumph or not the Quebec fans still booed him after the race angry that none of their local guys won. In addition to Villenueve the Montreal fans also had IndyCar racer and polesitter Alex Tagliani to pull off. Tags led early but lost most of his chance at victory when Villenueve spun him late. He recovered to come back into the top-5 but being collected in some madness on a restart doomed his chances for good. Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge racer Billy Johnson also rolled the dice to have a great run and without some of the last cautions could have won as he was keeping up with Villenueve. In the end he and the #60 team, hot off a win on the road course at Watkins Glen with Carl Edwards at the wheel the previous week, decided not to try it and pitted rather than risk running out of fuel but still recovered to finish 8th after restarting about 23rd. Johnson's teammate Ricky Stenhouse had a great run for a road course but spun himself late coming into a corner too hot trying to keep on Villeneuve's bumper. 12. Unser1 posted: 08.18.2012 - 10:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Ron Fellows was the only former winner of the Montreal Busch race that was entered in this one. His bid for a second victory was seemingly ended by a spin late but he recoved for a top-5. Canadian Tire Series part-timer Derek White makes his Nationwide debut and finishes in the top-20. It was hard earned, he had to recover from a spin in the closing laps after contact with Kyle Busch to bring out the race's final caution. 13. DaleSrFanForever posted: 08.18.2012 - 10:39 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Every race JV has to do something that just makes you shake your head. Hitting Tags then just mashing the gas and shoving him until he spun was bullshit. It was like Rudd at Charlotte '94. That is why he always has good cars but can't translate a victory. And Danica did a great job. She has these low speed techniccal road courses down pretty well. And for the record, I don't think the shoe caused her mechanical failure. They discussed something similar after her qualifying run, and as hard as everyone slammed those curbs, if those don't automatically tear your suspension up then no shoe in the world will. Still, a pretty dumb thing to throw a damn shoe on the track. And I am still wondering where it came from. It just like appeared out of the woods there. Congrats to Justin. I really think he has talent and I hope he can get a good Cup shot. I'd like to see what he can do with the #22 car. Instead of recycling drivers like Logano or Hornish (who in all fairness has improved mightily), give new blood a chance. This stagnation is getting ridiculous. 14. He just plowed into Tags and never lifted; come on NASCAR you've penelized drivers for less then that A great recovery by Hornish after being run over by McDowell and then being caught up with Danica and Mike Wallace. (I wanted to see Sam win so bad) Did you hear the fans booing Allgaier? why cause he won the race, he only gave JV a love tap. I didn't hear anybody boo when the "king of cheap shots" spun Tags. Please NASCAR don't go back to Canada, I'm sick of these drunk Canadians booing drivers just beacuse their Americans, and another reason NASCAR should not go to Canada was illustrated today when one of those druken idiots threw a shoe on the track; I hate Danica Patrick but she deserved a good finish and that may have destroyed her day. So please, please, please NASCAR don't go back to Canada. 15. Proof that luck comes in cycles? Danica was as fast as anyone today. She held a 5 second gap to JV between passing Hornish and the pit stop. That's two road races where she was top 5 all day and has nothing to show for it. The Montreal races tend to look unprofessional at the end, which is embarrassing on an international stage like this. JV was a victim of his own reputation though. 17. TeamPlayersBlue posted: 08.18.2012 - 11:28 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 14, I'm Canadian and I disown Quebec. They showed an onboard that proved that Jacques didn't sputter or anything. Allgaier simply threw it in deep trying to go for the win and clearly didn't care if he had to dirty up the leader to win the race. Most people don't care as the 22 dirtied up the 30 for likely retaliation for the 30 using him up on the restart, but dirty is dirty and I personally find Allgaier to be a driver with a style that contradicts his personality. He has the whole generic "nice guy" thing going on, but I find him to be pretty dirty and lacking racing smarts in several situations. He even tried to dump Ron Fellows earlier in the race when Justin doored Fellows and then Fellows ran him slightly wide on the exit. I have too many examples from the past that lead me to my somewhat harsh opinions of Allgaier, but I'm not a fan whatsoever. If Jacques had punted somebody like that for the win, fans would go off about it... including me. The thing is, that I'll do the same when Allgaier does it. 19. The shoe appeared right next to a pedestrian bridge sponsored by OctaneRacing.ca, with no grandstands in that area I'd assume it was thrown off the bridge. The angle that thing was flying at doesn't look like anything accidental. On a late restart Michael McDowell got into the back of Sam Hornish Jr. causing body damage to both cars and spining Hornish out as both went off track. It was far from the end of the day for either though. Hornish rejoined the race and came back to finish second but McDowell also rallied to finish sixth in the Joe Gibbs' #18 (this week painted identically to Denny Hamlin's FedEx Cup car). Hornish came just one spot short of pulling a spin-and-win, ironically Nelson Piquet Jr. did that feat in a NASCAR Truck race at MIS earlier in the day. After this race last year Patrick Carpentier retired from racing. Since that race ended early with a mechanical failure the Quebec racer came out of retirement to run this race again. He wouldn't do much better, the former CART star was penalized early after he cut a corner then suffered a mechanical problem that ruined his day shortly thereafter. At least the #99 team was able to fix the NAPA ride, this time Carpentier was able to go back out and finish the race. 24. Even the usually placid Trevor Bayne walled him at Nashville in 2010 after an incident involvgin Allgaier earlier in that race, and you REALLY have to do something wrong to get Bayne to do something like that. In fact, Bayne and Allgaier have had a number of run-ins in their time racing together in the Nationwide Series. And Allgaier has even had run-ins with teammates in his two years at Turner Motorsports. And RaceFanX, the incident in which Carpentier shortcut the corner, resulting in his penalty was more than likely caused by the mechanical problem that sent him to the garage area. 26. dion posted: 08.19.2012 - 1:54 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 1) I hope they arrest the fan who threw the shoe on the track...that was dumb as hell 2) I lost any remaining respect I had for JV. Last year I watched the race from the area where the shoe was thrown and then moved over for a view of the hairpin. I've said it several times before, but inside of 10 laps to go, I don't get why NASCAR just doesn't red flag the race, stop the cars and clean up ALL the debris, then give them the one to go so you don't have cars running out of gas while others are trying to get up to speed. This rule should apply everywhere, but more so at Daytona, Talladega and the road courses due to their length Final time this race will be "Presented by Dodge" with them leaving NASCAR next year. Unbelievably, this is the 5th win out of 6 total Nationwide wins by Turner Motorsport where the winning car only led the final lap. The exception to this was Nelson Piquet leading 19 laps and winning Road America. 3 out of 6 Turner wins have come on road courses now, they are just missing a short track win. The #3 team has come crashing down after their Kentucky win where they briefly held the point lead to now being almost a full race's worth of points out of the lead. Sam Hornish picks up his 10th straight top 10 and has suddenly closed the gap to Sadler. Aside from Daytona he hasn't finished worse than 13th all season long. People can say whatever they want about the shoe, but Canada deserves more NASCAR dates because they can easily fill a race track. I'm glad to hear Mosport might be getting something next year. For instance when the Cup guys went to Japan in the later 1990s GM never used the Goodwrench brand there and thus Dale Earnhardt raced an ACDelco car instead. Or the first time the Nationwide guys went to Mexico City Kevin Harvick's normally sponsored by Reese's car was given a new look to promote the local candy Pelon Pelo Rico instead. IIRC Kenny Wallace needed a fan campaign to get him to this race last year because the normal sponsor doesn't operate in Canada. 44. the Great Dave posted: 08.19.2012 - 11:51 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @#38 and #40 actually I read that Discount Tire refused to sponsor Jacques after Road America. I am a huge fan of Jacques, and have been since the Indy 500 in 1995! He's an elite talent, with a defiant personality and a tell-it-like-it-is attitude. But every time he races, people like to throw him under the bus for driving like quite a few other people in the field who get lauded for the aggressiveness. Is it a xenophobic dislike for a French-Canadian willing to rub fenders with NASCAR's best? Also, moving NASCAR from Montreal to Mosport is an absolutely abhorrent idea. Montreal is a circuit that gives NASCAR, and the Nationwide Series, it's lone opportunity to share a course with the premier form of motorsports in the WORLD. If anything, this event should be the crown jewel of the Nationwide Series schedule. Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is a world class facility, an amazing road course, and should not ever see itself removed from the NASCAR calendar. The more I see Justin Allgaier race, the more I just can't stand behind him. He reminds me a lot of Carl Edwards, and that is not a compliment. He has the "awe shucks" image outside of the car, but then doesn't hesitate to use the chrome horn behind the wheel. At least when JV is aggressive behind the wheel, he at least has a personality to match. Allgaier is just another Edwardsian phony. But in the end, you know what they say about opinions... 47. "I don't think it's because Villenueve is from Quebec because the fans don't rag on Tags, Ranger or Carpentier the same way. His spinning Tagliani seems to one of the bones of contention here." Tags and Carpentier are much more conservative drivers than JV is, so the fans can't find a reason to come after them. Ranger hasn't had the runs in a National Series that would allow for his nature to be shown (he is another very aggressive driver, see the finish of the NCATS race from 2011). Villeneuve is simply more visible, and therefore a bigger target from the American fans. You also cannot discount the recalcitrant nature of American race fans towards drivers who made their name in open wheel racing. Jeff Gordon was reviled for years for it, though Tony Stewart did seem to avoid it. Juan Pablo Montoya, AJ Allmendiger, Sam Hornish Jr., Dario Franchitti and Danica Patrick have also been victims of it. 50. murb posted: 08.19.2012 - 2:34 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Here's my thoughts on the race: -Danica did a great job. The shoe throwing incident was ridiculous, but it sounded like that wasn't what caused her problems. It sounded like they had problems with the car in qualifying and practice or whatever but they didn't even do anything about it. So I think you have to place a little blame on Tony Eury for that. -Jacques got what he had coming. He had no right to be pissed off over what Justin did, when he himself has done that constantly in his Nascar "career", including earlier on in the race to Alex Tagliani. Hopefully this will be his last ever Nascar race and he won't be back next year. -Michael "Captain Jesus" McDowell is a jackwad. He totally took out Hornish in a move that was reminiscent of something Villeneuve would do. Luckily, Sam came back for a 2nd place finish, and McDowell still hasn't won a race for JGR. -Great runs for Mike Wallace and Billy Johnson in the Roush 60 car. -Elliott is still the guy to beat for the championship. -Stenhouse still has a lot to learn if he wants to be just as good as Matt Kenseth has been in that Cup car. But before he took himself out, he was doing a good job. 51. Look at all the finishes at these tracks. 60% - 80% of the cars that start in the top 10 finish in the top 10.The shoe had nothing to do with her problems. A torque arm bracket or sway bar bracket was probably bent or a weld was cracked during qualifying and they could not fix it as she would have had to start at the rear. Broken axel was another issue. Anyway, this was her only hope for a top 10 finish as the tracks coming up will not be kind to her with the exception of Texas or Homestead. She probably will be unable to regain 10th in points as Mike Wallace is catching up with some good runs. I was very impressed with Hornish considering what he went through. What a bonehead move by Stenhouse as he had 2nd locked up. Montreal is a circuit that gives NASCAR, and the Nationwide Series, it's lone opportunity to share a course with the premier form of motorsports in the WORLD. If anything, this event should be the crown jewel of the Nationwide Series schedule. Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is a world class facility, an amazing road course, and should not ever see itself removed from the NASCAR calendar." No one said the Montreal race date would be moved, but rather an additional date for either Nationwide or Trucks. The Trucks especially need more races, they're down to 22 from 25. CGV is a fun road course, but its definitely not a world class facility yet. "IIRC Kenny Wallace needed a fan campaign to get him to this race last year because the normal sponsor doesn't operate in Canada." His sponsor was the US Border Patrol, who wasn't allowed to sponsor races in Canada IIRC. I know she's had bad luck which is out of her control but it's laughable that she's behind Joe Nemechek in points who has run one less race and is barely ahead of Mike Wallace and Jeremy Clements. It's sad and scary to know that someone like that is getting a fully funded Cup ride next year. 62. It's the 3rd consecutive season that Allgaier's won a race, and it could be 3 consecutive 1-win seasons if he fails to find victory lane again in 2012. His 3 wins have come on a short track, intermediate track and a road course. After just 2 top 5's in the first 17 races of the season, Allgaier now has 3 top 3's in the last 5 races (9 career top 3 finishes). It's Turner Motorsports' 6th career Nationwide win, their 2nd straight season 3-win season. Allgaier becomes the first repeat winner for Turner with 2. Sam Hornish Jr. joins Elliott Sadler as the only Nationwide drivers this season with 4 consecutive top 3 finishes, and now owns the longest top 10 streak of 2012 among all drivers with 10 in a row. Hornish is just one of two drivers to finish in the top 5 in all 3 road course races this season. Jacques Villeneuve ties his best career Nationwide finish with his third 3rd place finish in 9 career starts. It's his 3rd top 5 in 5 starts at CGV. Elliott Sadler's 4th place finish is his first top 10 on the road courses this season and just his 2nd top 5 9 career road course starts. Ron Fellows joins Sam Hornish Jr. as the only two drivers with top 5's in all 3 road course races this season. It's Fellows' 12th top 5 in 24 career Nationwide starts. Michael McDowell has now finished no worse than 7th in all 5 of his starts this season (2 top 5's, 4.8 avg fin). But the #18 JGR team now has just a 6 point lead over the #2 RCR team in the owners standings. Mike Wallace gets just his 3rd top 10 in 21 career road course starts, his first since a 5th at Road America last season; his first was in 1993 at Watkins Glen. It's Mike's first top 10 of 2012 and just his 3rd since 2009. Grand-Am driver Billy Johnson gets his first top 10 in his 3rd career Nationwide start. Austin Dillon gets his first top 10 on a road course in Nationwide, and ties Elliott Sadler and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. for the most top 10's this season with 16. It's his 20th career top 10 in 33 series starts, and 52nd in 85 starts between Trucks and NNS. Kyle Busch now has a pair of 10th place finishes in his only 2 starts at CGV, his 9th top 10 in 10 career road course starts. It's just his 5th top 10 in 13 NNS starts this season. Alex Kennedy gets his best career Nationwide finish in 15th (14 starts). Danica Patrick has finished 27th or worse in 3 of her last 4 races, scoring just the 17th most points over that; only Timmy Hill's scored fewer among drivers who've run each of the last 4 races. Even Tayler Malsam, who's made just 3 starts in that stretch, is 16th in points scored. 65. Regardless of whether or not/how much of it is her fault, the bottom line is that Danica Patrick's NNS season makes Jeff Gordon's Cup season this year look like the very model of consistency and success. And sooner or later somebody is going to start asking the tough questions about it - questions that don't have good answers. 68. She didn't look very pleased considering how she loves the media attention. Amazing, even the local newspaper here in Roch blamed the shoe for her poor finish.Another excuse for the Godaddy handbook for sure.On to Bristol and Atlanta where she is doing double duty again. She has the potential to mess it up for one of the wild card chasers. Seems like Tony would have picked some different dates for her "learning experience" tracks. And then to learn in 5 of the 10 chase races too??? Could get very interesting if she gets too much in the way. Of course whatever happens will not be her fault. Get ready now,all race, Danica,Danica, Danica and then a Danica commercial !!! 69.
