That was a great recovery by Stenhouse after he made what appeared to be a crucial mistake when he stalled the car on pit road. 3. Good to see extended coverage given to Johanna, too bad it was one of her worst races. 4. cjs3872 posted: 09.15.2012 - 9:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Yes DSFF, you may be close to right about that, which is why it is a good thing for him that Jimmy Fennig is probably going to be his crew chief next year, because Stenhouse going to need someone to mentor him. Otherwise, he may crash and burn next year in the #17 Cup car. And I think Roush should savor these win that Stenhouse is gving him, because if he runs the full Nationwide Series with Trevor Bayne next year, his team may find it hard to find victory lane, because Bayne will not take the chances that Stenhouse is willing to take. That was proven again today, because the moves Stenhouse made to get back up into contention, forcing his way through cars, Bayne would likely have backed off and let the guy in front back in, and tried to make the pass later when the risk would have been much lower. Roush's Nationwide team may be in for the same kind of transition that Junior Johnson's team had in 1987, when Darrell Waltrip (and Neil Bonnett) was replaced by Terry Labonte. Waltrip took chances to win races, as his 84 wins and three championships prove, while Labonte would take second or third, rather than take a chance to try to win a race that might not work. The comparison between Stenhouse and Bayne is the same. Stenhouse will take a lot of chances and put his car at risk, while Bayne will not, instead taking fourth and fifth place finishes with winning cars, instead of taking chances on wrecking them trying to go for the win. If Roush runs Bayne in the Nationwide Series next year, which he said is the current plan, which I'm still not totally sold he'll do, it will be interesting, but Roush almost certainly won't be making repeat trips to victory lane in the Nationwide Series next year, if my hunch is right, if he makes any at all. 5. Had Almirola been a more aggressive driver, he might have given others more reason to be concerned. A more aggressive driver in a position like that, up front for the first time in one of the sport's biggest events, might have given the usual front runners more reason to be concerned, but having a more conservative driver like Alimrola be that driver lessened the possibility of something going wrong, and nothing did. 8. Dave #38 Fan posted: 09.15.2012 - 11:15 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) how would an aggressive driver have made any difference? if you have the talent to sit on the pole in a cup race, then you have the talent to now screw up and cause a big wreck. jimmie johnson sat on the daytona 500 pole in his rookie year and that turned out okay. 9. Of course, and I've never mentioned this, but having the experience of Richard Petty didn't hurt there, either. But there have been numerous time where a young, aggressive driver has made mistakes when he's been up front for the first time in a big race. Certainly the point you mention about Jimmie Johnson at the '02 Daytona 500, or David Gilliland more recently at the '07 Daytona 500, starting up front and nothing happening is accurate. What I'm stating is that there's a much greater likelyhood of an inexperienced driver making such and error than a more experienced driver. And Johnson and Gilliland had much more experienced teammates to fall back on. Johnson had Jeff Gordon and Terry Labonte, while Gilliland had Ricky Rudd, as did Jeff Gordon in 1993. 13. 10andJoe posted: 09.16.2012 - 1:05 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) >Because Dave #38 Fan, an aggressive driver on the pole for the first time in a race as big as the Coca-Cola 600 is more likely to make an error that could decimate the field, orat least have an effect on the field during the early laps, And when has that happened? 14. It was hilarious as Kyle sang her his "Danica I Love You" song. She went on to admit she has no clue what she is doing driving the cup car.Said it will take her years to get the hang of it.She's 30 now and better stay in shape as the years go by. Godaddy sure is throwing some good money away on her.She will have a tough time qualifying for the cup races. 19. KBM had scheduled Kurt Busch for this race and he was even on the entry list, but Kyle decided to run more Nationwide races since he missed the chase and feels close to getting a win in his own car. Kurt is supposed to run this weekend at Kentucky, but that could be his last start in the 54 this year. I hope we see way more Ryan Blaney in Nationwide next year for Penske. I want to see some real young talent out there showing what they got instead of the likes of Danica Patrick and Brian Scott. 25. Stenhouse's 5 wins are the most by a Nationwide Series regular since Martin Truex Jr. had 6 wins in 2005 on his way to the championship. Stenhouse's 16 top 5's this season equal his total from all of 2011, and lead the series; he's tied with Austin Dillon fort he most top 10's with 20, is 2nd only to Kevin Harvick in laps led (692 vs. 787) and 2nd in average finish only to Joey Logano (7.4 vs. 7.2) among drivers with 10+ starts. Stenhouse has 4 consecutive top 2 finishes, the first driver to do since Carl Edwards had streaks of 5 and 6 races with top 2 finishes in 2011. He's the first Nationwide regular to do at least that since Dale Earnhardt Jr. had 5 in a row in 1999 (back-to-back runner-up finishes then 3 straight wins). Kyle Busch finishes runner-up for the 2nd time this season, first since Talladega back in May. It's just his 4th top 5 in 16 starts this season, although they're all top 3 finishes. Austin Dillon's the highest finishing rookie in 3rd, becoming just the 5th rookie in Nationwide Series history to have 20+ top 10's in a season; Kyle Busch holds the record for the most in a season with 22 in 2004, then Carl Edward and Greg Biffle with 21 in 2004 and 2001 respectively, and then Steve Park with 20 in 1997. Dillon picked up his 13th top 5 of the season but just his 3rd podium finish of the season (younger brother Ty Dillon has just 4 top 5's in 15 Truck races this season, but they're all podium finishes). Brad Keselowski finishes in the top 4 for the 5th time in his last 6 Nationwide starts. Paul Menard extends his top 10 streak in Nationwide to 13 consecutive starts, but gets his first top 5 in his last 4 starts. Sam Hornish Jr. picks up his 13th top 10 in the last 14 races, but since his streak of 4 consecutive podiums he's gone 4 straight races without a top 5. Michael Annett finishes in the top 10 for a career-best 4th consecutive race. In the last 4 races, Elliott Sadler has 3 top 5's and a 7.2 average finish. But Stenhouse Jr.'s 4 consecutive top 2 finishes has allowed him to outscore Sadler by 31 points over that span, and RCR teammate Austin Dillon's outscored him by 10 points. Joey Logano has established a new career-high in laps led in Nationwide this season with 616 (615 in 25 starts in 2010), and he earned his 20th career Nationwide Series pole (9th all time), but has just 1 top 5 finish in his last 4 starts (a win at Bristol). Brian Scott's 7th top 10 of the season equals his total from all of 2011, but it's just his 2nd top 10 in the last 12 races and he hasn't finished better than 10th over that stretch. ARCA driver Alex Bowman finishes 17th and NASCAR Mexico Series driver Juan Carlos Blum finishes 26th in their Nationwide Series debuts. 27. Agreed. The only reason Danica is even on par with the lead lap when she is is because of her equipment. While JRM isn't even close to being the best Nationwide team, they are still better than any other non-Cup team, and Danica has been outrun by low budget efforts at times this year. And we can't use the no stock car experience excuse anymore for Danica, since she's had about a year and a half worth of Nationwide experience. Give Johanna a chance in good stuff and I guarantee you she would do better. "I hope we see way more Ryan Blaney in Nationwide next year for Penske. "I have no clue what I'm doing. It will take me years to be able to figure out how to get around and be competetive".She will be 31 shortly and I figure Godaddy will drop her like a hot potatoe after next year if she stinks up the place in cup.Watch NASCAR change some rules that will really benefit her.
