His Nationwide car was too low and his ARCA car had an unapproved suspension mounting. Both of his qualifying times were disallowed, but he still made the ARCA race via a provisional starting spot, but he'll miss the Nationwide race due to his placing in owner's points. In fact, four cars failed post-qualifying tech in ARCA. Along with Townley, the #5 of Bobby Gerhart, #22 of Korbin Forrister, and #66 of Mark Thompson all had their times disallowed and will start from the back in today's race. 10. It was actually Landon Cassill who Stewart made contact with at Dover last spring. That wreck wasn't Stewart's fault, but the one at Talladega certainly was. God forbid someone else block him (Joey Logano at Fontana) or move him out of the way (Kurt Busch at Richmond). Smoke don't like it when somebody else races him the same way he races everyone else, and as a result two fights almost broke out after those two races. Milka Duno did make a right turn into Townley, but she had no choice because if she didn't make a right turn, she was going to practically run right over the top of whoever it was she was closing on because of the closing rate, and she couldn't get on the brakes because of the rate of closure. But saying that, both Townley and Duno are accidents waiting for a place to happen, something their history indicates. And Townley was tapped to drive the #10 car because of the sponsorship he brings, nothing more or less than that. I would be interested to see what happens if the weekend is washed out because, unlike 1997, there is no off-week for some time. In 1997, there was an off-weekend after Sonoma, so they ran the race on that weekend, two weeks after that race was originally scheduled, and that race, the 1997 Winston 500, is the fastest 500-mile NASCAR race ever run and the first to go caution-free at Talladega. And another thing. If the race has to be rescheduled for another weekend, what would happen to the Nationwide drivers qualified for this race if the rescheduled date happens to be on a weekend where the Nationwide Series is running. That could affect the #21 and #81 cars and teams because they might have to do driver changes because their drivers (Trevor Bayne in the #21 and Elliott Sadler in the #81) would be in the Nationwide Series events that weekend, if it was rescheduled for an off-weekend where the Nationwide Series is running. 44. jabber1990 posted: 05.03.2013 - 9:59 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "I have a feeling this weekend may end up like the spring 2010. Give me a break. It's all car in plate racing when it comes to qualifying. I don't know who said it, but it's true. A trained monkey can get around at Talladega alone on the track. Actually, Pastrana's pole speed was about what Bill France, Sr. ran in 1969 when the drivers planned the boycott of the first race run at Talladega, and Bill, Sr. was coming up on his 60th birthday when he turned that lap in 1969. That's why Pastrana's pole run is unimpressive. If he were to win the pole at Charlotte, that would be completely different, and the same is true if he somehow manages to win the Nationwide race, whenever it's run. But the pole run was unimpressive, no matter wh the driver was. 49. Today it was raining, which can be either really good or bad if there's snow on the ground, depending on the temperature (luckily it was above freezing all day). We've had three different seasonal weathers in the past week alone. It's too bad there aren't any leaves on the trees, otherwise I'm sure they would have been falling off as well. Getting back to The Long Shot's point, it looks like I'll have more time to study for my finals tomorrow than I had originally anticipated. It'll be interesting to see whether the Nationwide race (if it does in fact get canceled) gets pushed to Sunday, or if it might have to be held off until Monday or even at a later date just because of the possible rain over the next three days. I hate it for the folks down in Alabama. The NASCAR heads don't give a rats ass about those people 50 weeks out of the year, but for those two weekends in the spring and fall, they're number one and it's their time to shine in front of the NASCAR audience with a really fun race track. It's a shame that rain could possibly ruin one of their two NASCAR weekends out of the year. Definitely not what those people wanted to see. 51. Reminds me of last year at Homestead when Blake Koch qualified the SR2 #00 9th before dropping out at lap 40 to a 39th position. Talk about a dissapointing season, Koch started last year in the #41 getting 2 top 20s in the first 3 races. By then he was 10th in points. He was put in the #15 (#75 for 1 race) where he S&Ped after a few laps. At Dover he only ran 2 laps but still finished 41st. Raines did not start, and DiBenedetto also dropped out at lap 2. He then got another top 20, 19th at Daytona with MacDonald #82 before moving to the #42 for Key's start and park club. SR2 signed him with more S&Ps. This year is better, got a 16th at Phoenix in the #24. Just saw on Jayski that Kevin Conway is racing again, he and Robby Benton started Change Racing, a team in the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Series (what a name!). It provides jobs to drivers and crew members who might not have one at this level if they weren't willing to humble themselves and be a part of a team that's only intentions are to make the show, pull off the track, and help fund the additional team cars. I don't like it, but I understand it and I fully support those teams who have to start-and-park on a weekly/semi-weekly basis. When I made those statements about Jeff Green yesterday, I wasn't trying to say that he should have stayed in the car and start-and-parked and JWT should have stayed "DNQ," I was just frustrated overall at the fact that Green is forced to start-and-park every week when he easily could be getting similar results as his champion teammate Mike Bliss if he had sponsorship. That's all I was trying to say, and I wanted to clarify that because a few people took my comment the wrong way. If not for start-and-parks, Landon Cassill wouldn't have a ride and TBR wouldn't exist. Now, both parties are among the perennial underdogs in the sport today and are able to battle for top 25 finishes on a somewhat consistent basis now. If you refuse to start-and-park, you wind up like Scott Riggs. He left TBR as soon as they announced that they were going to begin start-and-parking back in 2009. He left, was out of the sport for almost a full year, and hasn't had a consistent ride since. I respect the fact that he took a stand, but he really screwed up his career by doing that. Had he not left the team four years ago, Riggs might still be in the #36 car and Dave Blaney might be rideless. Aside from a few good Nationwide runs in early 2010 and his surprising 5th place finish in the Truck race at Martinsville last fall, he has pretty much been irrelevant ever since. If you don't start-and-park, you become "out of sight, out of mind," which is a death sentence in NASCAR. 59. We all know they have no attention to race. And they are rewarded with a 16000 check everytime they do it. And sure Paul there are some teams that have good attentions. I know Pearson made that scheme most famous, but Neil did a damn good job too, especially considering how bad the Woods were fading. Should also be noted he got four wins for RahMoc (two in '83, two in '88), their only wins in a LONG Cup career, did a decent job in the clusterf**k of that 2nd Junior Johnson #12 car that was set up horribly from the beginning, and was the clear "B" team to Darrell's #11 where he also had that paint scheme with the Buweiser logos in '84 (but that season sucked for Neil, so I will ignore it). He also gave JD Stacy his first taste of success (its not Neil's fault this caused Stacy to think he actually knew about racing and screw Neil's best friend Dale badly in '81, causing him to endure a few years of wasting his talent). 86. Smith has something figuratively and literally the Danica doesn't have as evidenced by that move in the tri-oval................. courage. With the right equipment Regan is a contender. I still prefer tandem over one pack for the this reason. The winning move in this race works in tandem as the cars had some separation, but in the large pack, Regan Smith would have crashed a quarter of the cars still running. Blocking is not a significant issue with tandem because the end result is crashing like 2012 Daytona in February. In addition, Logano said something very telling in his post-race interview. At the white-flag he thought he had no chance in hell and by the backstretch, he thought he was in it to win it. With tandem, the winning run to the checkers is so unpredictable as evidenced by the Spring 2011 Talladega race, heck had the finish line been 200 yards down from its position, Edwards could have won riding the wall. 312. Larson clearly has the behind the wheel talent, but his recklessness that he has shown cannot be denied. He's torn up a ton of cars, and he's also done a lot of ridiculously stupid things to boot. There was the wreck at Vegas where he took off his steering wheel and safety devices as he was about to go head on into the inside wall (he's lucky he didn't become a shish-cabob), there was Texas where he idiotically drove back around too fast on a flat tire (causing him to crash and almost hit a safety truck), and there was even his victory celebration at Rockingham where took off his steering wheel as he was doing a burnout (I give him more of a pass for this one since it wasn't at race speed, but in my opinion it was still a careless move). This complete lack of safety initiative has really altered my opinion of him. If he keeps doing stuff like this, he's gonna one day hurt himself or somebody else, and I really don't want to see that happen. Like I said, he's got the behind the wheel talent, but the key to it all will be whether or not he can harness it in his head and stop doing stupid stuff like this. 332. The race I'm referring to was the 1992 IROC race at Daytona when none other than Dale Earnhardt, Sr. made that exact same move to nip Ricky Rudd and Harry Gant. Rudd and Gant actually ended up in a dead-heat finish for second place in that race. But unfortunately, this race again showed that NASCAR doesn't know how to run a race. The race should have been called due to darkness after the big accident in turn three because it was obvious that it was getting too dark. The race also showed what a terrible idea it s to have GWC finishes at plate races, because the crash at the finish was another crash that should never have happened, because the race should have been called before that, and certainly Austin Dillon and Richard Childress have a legtimate gripe with the officials for having that GWC finish in virtual darkness. If I remember right, didn't NASCAR forego a GWC finish at Kansas for he same reason several years ago, because I think they did. And another thing. Did anyone else notice that both Elliott Sadler and Brian Vickers, who started that final crash, were passing cars on the apron in the tri-oval, yet Sadler is not given a penalty for that infraction. I thought the intent of the "yellow line" rule was to keep crashes like that from happening, and yet Sadler was no penalized for it. Now maybe since he spun, the penalty is forgiven, but the fact that they were passing cars on the apron was probably what started that crash at the finish. And speaking of Sadler, the crash of Sam Hornish, Jr. opened up the championship race for a number of drivers, including Sadler. Now if Regan Smith follows suit with a bad race of his own, this championship race will be wide open again. The difference between second and eighth in points is just 26, so one bad race by Regan Smith would blow the doors off this championship battle and make it wide open again among up to eight drivers. But what Regan Smith has done by opening up a sizeable lead shows what having a competent driver can do for a race team, because the previous driver in that car was borderline incompetent, and now that car's driver has a solid lead in the championship standings. 337. 18fan posted: 05.05.2013 - 1:23 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) cjs, that wreck that happened on the GWC could've easily happened on the second to last restart that happened with 7 laps to go, and that is unavoidable. 338. cjs3872 posted: 05.05.2013 - 1:36 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) That may be true 18fan, but the race should have been called prior to that anyway because it was too dark. When that first big crash in turn three took place on lap 94, the race should have been called right then and there because it was too dark, and that was before the final two crashes took place. NASCAR always tries to get the full race in, but in trying to do so, they sometimes compromise safety, and today was one of those cases. They need to get guys that actually know how to run a race to run things, and until they do, fiascos like today's race are going to continue to happen. It was unsafe to race in those conditions, but NASCAR didn't realize it until 20 minutes later. Among other things, the spotters couldn't hardly see the cars because of the dank conditions, and that leads to trouble. But you can't run 190-200 MPH when you can barely see, and that's what was going on those last 20-30 minutes of the race. 339. 18fan posted: 05.05.2013 - 1:40 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I thought they were going to call the race after the Big One when Kurt was leading and I was surprised that they kept the race going. And Anonymous (#340), normally I would agree with you, but they were still crashing, and crashing hard, plus there was a sight issue involved due to darkness, which is why I say the race should have been called after the first major crash on lap 94. The one major difference between this and what happened atthe end of the 2007 Daytona 500 was that, in the 2007 Daytona 500, the whole pack was together, so there was no avoiding that huge crash once it started, so the right call was made by not throwing the caution flag until after the leaders had crossed the S/F line. But here, with the field more spread out, cars were still crashing after the fact, so the right decision was made to throw the caution flag. In fact, a legitimate argument can be made that NASCAR waited too long to throw the caution flag because they wanted the leaders to finish the race, but because of sight problems and the fact that cars were still crashing hard, the caution had to be thrown. And Paul (#166), none of the commentators ever show any emotion today. That's why I'll take the guys that commentated on ABC back in the 70s, Jim McKay, Keith Jackson, Jackie Stewart, and even Bill Flemming, because those guys genuinely seemed to care about calling the event as it happened, and if something happened on the track, they called it as they saw it. Can you imagine how some of the commentators today wouyld deal with some of the crashes that Jim McKay had to call, especially at Indy (Mosley and Bobby Unser crashing into three parked cars, the crashes of Salt Walther, Swede Savage, and Danny Ongais), or how they would deal with the finish of the 1982 Indianapolis 500? There wouyld hardly be any excitement in their voices. Allen Bestwick shows the most emotion out of today's commentators, but even he pales in comparison to the likes of McKay, Jackson, and Ken Squier. 357. As long as nothing terrible happens at Darlington, that team should stay in the top 30 for a while" Well, terrible happened before the cars got to Darlington. I'm guessing the #55 team is broke and becoming a part time team unless a rent-a-ride driver offers $$$$ for the missing races. This would lock the #55 out for the remainder of the season, lock the #74 of Mike Harmon in at Darlington & give Dexter Stacey a good shot at getting into the top 30 if he continues to show up. 364. I give NASCAR big credit for this device, because the Air Titan sure got one hell of a test that weekend! 376. I was sure Kahne was the rightful winner. I knew he beat 'em to the line. It wasn't until, a few years ago, that I realized they threw the caution. When, a similar situation happened with Elliott Sadler and Brennan Poole in this race, I was perfectly fine with it 382. Should be 14 and 9 involved respectively in the 2 crashes thank you. 383.
