Unless I miss my guess, he's not even going to be calling his race because he's probably in Texas to call the IndyCar race there tonight, because he's the lead commentator for the IndyCar races for ESPN/ABC, and the IndyCar race at Texas is being broadcast by ABC tonight live. Allen Bestwick will most likely be doing the play-by-play for this race since Reid is probably in Texas. 13. A line of storms is moving through the area right now, and heavier storms are following about an hour and a half behind. There probably won't be enough time to even dry the track after the first line of storms go through before the second line arrives. 15. jabber1990 posted: 06.08.2013 - 7:16 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) if Logano has to withdrawl will the car have to withdrawl as well? or do they have a backup driver lying around? 16. This is the exact reason why I said in another comments page that it was a terrible idea to have Logano run this race, because it means nothing to have Logano run this race, when he needs to be at Pocono, where by the way, he's the defending champion. It was always a better idea to have Ryan Blaney run this race, since they were racing at Texas last night. Joey Logano should not be there tonight for any reason since it's a stand-alone event. The only Cup driver that should be competing is Joe Nemechek, since Nemechek is actually accumulating points in the Nationwide Series instead of the Cup Series (he's currently tied for 17th with Mike Wallace). How someone as intelligent as Penske could have Joey Logano run such a meaningless race is beyond me. 18. 83andJoe posted: 06.08.2013 - 7:41 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Can we not do the "masturbating" comments? Why can't we appreciate a super talented major leaguer's repeated minor league wins WHILE a major leaguer in ridiculously superior equipment (see Logano, Joey 2012) while year after year he pisses away these incredible gifts he's been given, always floundering in points, half the time missing the playoffs altogether, while lesser talented drivers like Jimmie Johnson, Brad Keselowski, Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin, and Clint Bowyer either win Cup championships or come damn close, something Kyle has never done?". And DSFF, if Kyle Busch's dominance in the Nationwide Series is comparable to anything, I would say it would be the sluggers in MLB's steroid era, which is still going on, because of the physical advantage steroids inheritantly gives the players in terms of strength. Note that batting averages never went up as a whole, but the slugging numbers skyrocketed. That's the same thing with Kyle Busch. He has such an edge in terms of equipment in the lower series with JGR that is numbers are eschewed in the same way that the sluggers in the steroid era are. Remember that when Kyle raced in the NNS with HMS, he was good, but hardly dominant because the HMS equipment was not dominant NNS equipment, certainly not on the scale of Gibbs' Toyotas. Let's not forget that Tony Stewart was never that great in the Nationwide Series, but the one year he raced Toyotas for JGR (2008), he was dominating a series he rarely ever won in before. The same is true of Kyle Busch. Let's not forget that he went WINLESS in both the truck and Nationwide Series racing his own stuff while building his own team, which also serves as the development arm of JGR. 25. Maybe they could, but with the amount of pre-race crap that they still have to go through (driver intros, invocation, national anthem, command), I find it highly unlikely they'll get this race started before the rains come. 26. cjs3872 posted: 06.08.2013 - 8:09 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The Long Shot, as I said before, Marty Reid is not even in Iowa to call the NNS race there because he in Texas to call the IndyCar race there. It is interesting that the races this weekend have so far been won by sons of racing champions, Jeb Burton, son of Daytona 500 and Southern 500 winner Ward Burton (and nephew of Southern 500 and 2x Coca-Cola 600 winner Jeff Burton), as well as Chase Elliott, son of legendary champion Bill Elliott. And with Marco Andretti starting up front tonight at Texas, that could continue, and by extension, if you want to count grandsons of racing champions, you can certainly count Austin Dillon in there, since his grandfather is a legendary champion car owner, though I admit, that's stretching it. And of course, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. has a chance to continue that tomorrow at Pocono, where he starts sixth and has looked good in practice. And I though Father's Day weekend wasn't until next weekend. (I don't give Nelson Piquet, Jr. much of a chance tonight in the NNS race at Iowa.) 27. Well, in hindsight, Bestwick probably should be taken out, since he's not the type who masturbates, ahem, pees his pants over HISTORICAL (not really) feats like this. 28. It will also be his first NASCAR oval since the Truck Series season finale at Homestead in 2011. Along with Papis, Drew Herring, Jason Bowles, T.J. Bell, Tim Schendel, Daryl Harr, and Ken Butler, III will all be making their first Nationwide starts of the season. Bowles and Bell will be doing start-and-parks for Curtis Key's team, and Schendel's team (Jimmy Means Motorsports) will likely retire before completing the full distance, but hopefully the other four drivers can have good runs (especially Herring, who is driving the winningest car this season) and show what they can do tonight/tomorrow, what with their respective limited schedules. I'm also happy for Joey Gase and Juan Carlos Blum, who have each picked up sponsorship and will be attempting the full race as well. ESPN highlighted and interviewed both Kyle Larson and Alex Bowman during the rain delay. Andy Petree put Bowman over as someone who keeps the car clean week-in and week-out, and Bowman himself said that he's learned a lot from Kyle Busch (fellow Toyota driver) on how to drive these cars this season. Whichever one of these rookie drivers winds up winning Rookie of the Year this season will be a well-deserved winner. The Cup Series lately hasn't had competitive ROTY battles, but the Nationwide Series definitely has during the "dry spell" on the Cup side, and this year is no exception. Dr. Jerry Punch did a very nice job of explaining hometown favorite Michael Annett's sternum injury, how he has a metal rod in his chest holding his sternum in place, and how that rod broke after a few weeks, causing Annett to be out of action for about two months longer than planned. I've been fortunate not to have broken any bones in my life, and I give Annett big props for going out there and racing these cars with a surgically-repaired sternum mere months after the injury. He's got stones, man. 34. Paul posted: 06.08.2013 - 9:45 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Forgot to mention this in my last post, but I don't have high expectations for Alex Bowman tonight because RAB Racing will be fielding a 2nd car for Kenny Wallace as well. Bowman has three finishes of 20th or worse this season, and two of them came when RAB fielded two cars (the other race, Phoenix, Bowman got caught up in an early crash). The odd thing about it though is that Bowman has been at or near the top of the leaderboard in practice whenever Kenny has been in the field, but the car seemed to just turn to junk once the green flag waved. Hopefully tonight/tomorrow will be different, but history suggests otherwise. One more thing: Great to see Cole Whitt back in the #44 car once again. He was impressive in that car last weekend at Dover, even finishing ahead of veteran teammate Mike Bliss (a rarity at TriStar Motorsports). It doesn't hurt that he'll be on the race track and have two champion teammates, Bliss and Jeff Green, to learn from at the track once again. Hopefully Whitt can put a deal together for a full-time run for 2014, and another solid run at Iowa would be a step in the right direction. 35. 18fan posted: 06.08.2013 - 9:58 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Race has been postponed. If I'm not mistaken, the race tomorrow will be the first Cup driver-free Nationwide race since Nashville back in June 2005; unless of course you exempt Michael McDowell as a Cup driver since he has primarily been a start-and-parker in Cup, in which case the most recent Cup driver-free race was at Road America in 2011. And you wonder if, while Bayne was running in second place, he wasn't thinking about when to make is move. After all, he DOES drive for the Wood Brothers, and how many races did they win with David Pearson using that exact strategy, and Bayne does appear to have a little David Pearson in him, because he's usually faster at the end of the race than he is during most of the rest of the race, and that was always Pearson's favorite tactic. Certainly the Wood Brothers have told him a lot about David Pearson and how he raced, because this apparently was from the David Pearson playbook, lay back a little until it's time, then strike when it counts, and Bayne did that to win this race, much like he did at Texas a few years ago. I think other teams my what to watch from now on if that #6 car is second, third, fourth, wondering how much does he have left, and is he showing everything he has. 155. Considering that Petree once worked for RCR, winning two championships for Dale Earnhardt, Sr., and considering that Bayne was passing, and roughing up the #3 car to some degree, that must have been particularly galling to the long-time fans of the RCR #3 car, not only Bayne's roughing up the #3 car some, but also Andy Petree saying that Bayne wanted it more than Dillon. That entire sequence must have been really galling for the fans of the #3 car to watch, because nobody, and I mean NOBODY ever roughed up the #3 car in the old days like that. At the end of that race, it was Bayne that looked like the embodiment of the #3 car and what it stood for when Earnhardt was driving it, and not the guy driving the #3 car today. And when Dillon rammed Bayne in the backstretch, Bayne gave it back to Dillon there the next lap by hitting his left rear corner, again looking more like the guy that used to drive the #3 for Richard Childress, instead of the guy driving it in today's Nationwide race. I just hope Childress doesn't see that, because he would be embarrassed by that, and I'm sure DSFF would agree with me here. Bayne was the one that looked like Dale, Sr. on that move, not the man driving the #3 car that Earnhardt made famous. 179. For all his talk and commercials about "continuing the legacy", and as much as I like Bayne personally, Trevor is the kind of driver Earnhardt used to feast on. 183. cjs3872 posted: 06.10.2013 - 8:59 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) That may be true DSFF, but also, if Earnhardt saw someone not be afraid to mess with him, as was the case with the man who built Iowa, Rusty Wallace, Earnhardt was not as inclined to mess with him, and the way Bayne reacted to the way Dillon doorslammed him, that might have also sent a message not to be rougher than necessary with him, because it appears that Bayne is one of those drivers above intimidation, which is natural given what he's been through (the highs of winning the Daytona 500 and the lows of having to sit out 6 weeks due to his illness later that same year). Bayne may be the kind of driver Earnhardt used to feast on, but only if he didn't fire back, and Bayne came back at Dillon after getting doorslammed, even asking his team what that was all about, doing so by ramming his left rear corner. If Earnhardt saw that out of a driver, he would have second thoughts about trying to push him around, knowing that he could get pushed back against. And let's not forget that Bayne had previously confronted Dillon after a race in Bristol last year after the two had a run-in, so there was already history between the two, but everyone that knew about the history of the sport in the last 25 years knew just how uncommon it was to see the RCR #3 car get pushed around like that, because it was always Earnhardt in the #3 doing the pushing. I'll say this. Earnhardt must have been rolling in his grave if he knew his #3 car had been shoved around like that in the closing lap to decide a race. And I reiterate that I hope Richard Childress hasn't seen that, because it must have been hard for him to take his beloved #3 getting pushed around like that. And let's not forget what Andy Petree said as that entire sequence was unfolding about Bayne seemingly "wanting it more" than Dillon. That must have been tough for any diehard fan of the #3 car to hear, because love him or hate him, nobody ever wanted I more than Earnhardt, and to hear someone who was connected to the black #3 for three years saying that someone else wanted it more than the driver of that black #3 Chevrolet must have been particularly galling for long-time fans of the #3 to see and hear. 184. ch posted: 06.10.2013 - 11:14 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Sponsor change: 60 - Roush Fenway Racing (Same as all year) 185. 83andJoe posted: 06.10.2013 - 5:03 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) ^ That is correct; there's a tiny KMC Wheels logo on the bumper level of the quarter panel, but that's been there all year, it's only an associate sponsor. The #60 car (still) has no primary sponsor; from what I've heard, Pastrana is helping to run the car out of his own pocket. 186. Baker posted: 06.11.2013 - 9:14 am Rate this comment: (0) (2) I don't think Regan has ever been the fastest car on the track in any race in his entire career. He is content to run well and seems to have no desire to get aggressive for positions any higher. I feel bad for what happened to him with the 78 team in cup and believe he should still be in that car, but his year in Nationwide has been boring and flat. He is only the points leader because he keeps the car clean and is content to run 6-10th every race. . Someone is going to get hot down the stretch and his conservative efforts are going to bite him in the long run. 23 points is not all that huge of a lead when you are not fast enough to contend for Top 5s. 195. cjs3872 posted: 06.11.2013 - 11:27 am Rate this comment: (3) (0) Baker, did you even watch the end of the Nationwide Series race at Talladega, because the move Regan Smith made to win that race was a move I've only ever seen one other driver make, and that was Dale Earnhardt, who made that move to win the 1992 IROC race at Daytona. And he's been plenty fast enough to run in the top five all year, unlike the driver he replaced in that car. Sure he hasn't led many laps, and he's not one to lead that many laps, but he usually finds his way to the front when it counts, which is the end of the race. And let's not forget that he held off Carl Edwards to win the 2011 Southern 500, then finished third at the Brickyard 400 later that same year. Sure Regan won't make any rash moves during the majority of the race, but he'll take the chances he needs to when he needs to, much like Trevor Bayne did at Iowa. He's not one to take chances during most of the race either, but come the end of the race, he'll do what he needs to in order to move up and possibly win the race. And let's not forget that Regan Smith was a dominant driver in the Nationwide Series finale at Homestead last year when he won going away. But as long as nobody else is making a serious run at Regan Smith in the points, why should he change his racing tactics? 196.
