Paul posted: 06.22.2013 - 1:57 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) A.J. Allmendinger records his first career Nationwide Series pole in his 9th career Nationwide start. His previous best start was an 8th back in 2007 at Kansas, and this will be his first Nationwide start since 2008. Recent history shows that this pole is a great thing for Dinger; Nelson Piquet, Jr. won the Road America race last year from the pole to record his first career Nationwide Series win, and Brad Keselowski won the pole and the race at Richmond a few months ago in the #22 Nationwide car, which Dinger will be driving today. I don't root for Cup drivers very often in the Nationwide Series, but I'll be pulling hard for Allmendinger today. Owen Kelly qualifies 2nd in his first Nationwide race since 2010, when he finished 5th at Road America for the now-defunct Baker Curb Racing team. I'm glad Kyle Busch and JGR chose Kelly to drive their #54 Nationwide car for this race, and so far he hasn't disappointed. Parker Kligerman qualifies a pretty surprising 3rd place in his KBM entry. Kligerman had only made three road course starts prior to this race (1 in Nationwide, 2 in ARCA), and none since Montreal in 2010 when he finished 8th for Penske Racing. He also qualified outside pole and collected 2 top six finishes at New Jersey Motorsports Park in ARCA back in 2008 and 2009, so keep your eye on that #77 car because that driver might just continue surprising us (or at least myself) with an impressive run today. Happy 22nd birthday to Cole Whitt, who qualified 17th in his #44 TriStar Motorsports car (his best qualifying effort of the season). Last year at Road America, he finished 9th after starting in 14th place driving for JR Motorsports, so perhaps Whitt has this joint figured out in spite of his lack of road course experience. It's been a weekend to forget for Elliott Sadler, who has completed just one lap all weekend so far. He didn't take the track in first practice, then blew his engine on his first practice lap yesterday during happy hour, and now he suffered yet another mechanical failure coming to the line during his qualifying lap. He'll have to start at the back of the field as a result of his team having to change engines, but for his sake, hopefully he can end this weekend with a decent finish. 7. Chives5150 posted: 06.22.2013 - 1:59 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I'm hoping that Kenny Habul and John Young can have some decent runs today. 8. The Long Shot posted: 06.22.2013 - 2:27 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) Billy Johnson qualifies 7th in the Roush Fenway Racing #16. Johnson, who is making just his 4th career series start, has always had a lot of road course talent, but he's run out of luck often, with 2 of his starts resulting in DNFs within the first 25 laps. Veteran road course driver Johnny O'Connell makes his Nationwide Series debut in Dale Jr,'s #5. O'Connell won 1 Indy Lights race in 1989 at Laguna Seca, and has 2 victories in Grand-Am, including the 2001 24 Hours At Daytona event. Finishing 4th that day, in what would be his final points racing start before his fatal accident at the same track 2 weeks later, was Dale Earnhardt. Hal Martin, in 10 starts driving TriStar Motorsports' #44, has an average start of 29.1 and an average finish of 27.8, with a best finish of 23rd at Phoenix and Charlotte. Cole Whitt, in 3 starts in the #44, has an average start of 20.7 and an average finish of 15.7, with a worst finish of 16th at Dover and Iowa. With stats like those, Mark Smith has almost no choice but to put Whitt in the car for the remainder of the season (not counting Chad Hackenbracht's 6 races). Stanton Barrett makes his first start since last fall at Charlotte, driving the #23, which is being run this week by Rick Ware Racing. Barrett failed to qualify for 2 races earlier this year in Ware's #15, which withdrew earlier in the week with driver Carl Long. Brendan Gaughan qualifies a disappointing 26th in his first start since finishing 3rd at last year's season finale at Homestead. Veteran road course ringer John Young has yet to finish any of his 4 career starts in Nationwide. His best career finish was at this race last year, when he finished 28th after running out of fuel with 2 laps to go. Kevin O'Connell makes his first Nationwide start since finishing 34th at the inaugural Road America event driving Baker-Curb Racing's #43 Chevrolet. 14 drivers are making their season debuts: A.J. Allmendinger, Owen Kelly, Michael McDowell, Billy Johnson, Johnny O'Connell, Andrew Ranger, Stanton Barrett, Brendan Gaughan, Kyle Kelley, Kenny Habul, James Buescher, John Young, Kevin O'Connell, and Derek White. 7 drivers in this weekend's field have started all 3 Road America races: Justin Allgaier, Michael McDowell, Brian Scott, Michael Annett, Mike Bliss, Mike Wallace, and Eric McClure. None of them have ever won a race here. 45 cars initially entered the race, but 5 teams withdrew prior to qualifying: #00-Blake Koch, #15-Carl Long, #42-T.J. Bell, the 52 Means Racing team which had not announced a driver, and #89-Morgan Shepherd. 9. As if that were not bad enough, they couldn't even get Ranger's car in the picture for yet another minute after that because they didn't have any cameras in that area of the track. BSPN never ceases to revolt me with their terrible coverage. Get them the hell out of NASCAR right now. Billy Johnson, you are outta here! That was a moronic move by him. I saw Johnson and Allmendinger together in their pit stall, and they continued to focus on Dinger after Johnson left his stall. When they panned back to show the entirety of pit road, Johnson had already exited, which made me wonder, "How in the world did he do that so fast?" Well, now we know. Remember that I said last week that a 3-lap caution in this race is the equivalent of an 18-lap caution at Bristol, a 15-lap caution at Iowa, where the races are 250 laps, or a 12-lap caution at places like Charlotte, Texas, Homestead, where the races are 200 laps long, and a 4-lap caution is the equivalent of a 24-lap caution at Bristol, a 20-lap caution at Iowa, or a 16-lap caution at those 1 and 1.5 mile tracks. In other words, that caution ate up a lot of the race for just one stalled car. If it was 4 laps, that's 8% of the entire race distance, which is an awful lot for one caution period, regardless of the track. 132. Both of them I find fairly enjoyable (Although NASCAR Thunder 2003 and 2004 towers above all.), but there's just some things in those games that irk me. I remember leading the Busch points while driving Kasey Kahne's #9 car, had back-to-back finishes outside the top ten, and was promptly FIRED. I like that they finally added that feature in the game, but I found that ridiculous. Oh well, I took over Clint Bowyer's #2 Busch car after that and won the championship. And NASCAR 09 has probably the most sensitive traction level of any NASCAR game, as any contact with the apron automatically causes your car to spin out. There's even a glitch in the game that causes your car to come to a sudden stop if you bump another car while in a slow corner (which commonly happens at road courses). They're both fun in their own ways, but they definitely have their fair share of issues. But this may be part of something bigger, because there's obviously bad blood between the Roush and Childress operations in the Nationwide Series. First, the Bayne-Dillon incident at Iowa two weeks go, then the incident between Bayne and Menard last week at Michigan, and now this. And with the main guys at both squads having a miserable year, I look for this to be a storyline for the season's second half. Speaking of Roush, Bayne drove his usually methodical race, and was probably going to finish no worse than seventh (seriously, even after he got into the top five, he was hardly ever mentioned) until the transmission broke on the last GWC. I don't know who's luck s worse, his or Jeff Gordon's in the Cup Series, because if anything's going to happen to someone in the NNS this year, it's going to happen to Bayne, though as I've mentioned before, that may just be a case of things evening out for the #6 team, because things went right for them last year when they shouldn't have, and now things are going wrong for them this year when they seemingly do everything right. And how about Cole Whitt finishing eighth in the #44 car. As I've said, I think this guy can be a future star in the sport. All he needs is backing, which is why Dale, Jr. couldn't keep him for this season. He wanted to, but didn't have the funding to do so. But you don't finish in the top ten on a road course and have an incident-free day on such a track unless you're talented, and he showed he is, even when it comes to turning left AND right. 345. But any time a driver starts an incident like that, and it was certainly unintentional (but very profitable in the championship for him), that puts somewhat of a damper on what otherwise would be one of his greatest days in the sport, right up there with his Truck Series win at Talladega last year. 358. 83andJoe posted: 06.22.2013 - 9:26 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Shouldn't the #70 be NEMCO-Jay Robinson Racing, as they are the team fielding the car when Johanna Long isn't driving? 359. He was the victim of a wrong place, wrong time situation. However, that is the advantage of building a 58 point lead before entering a potential pitfall. Luckily, there is time if Smith makes it past Daytona while finishing ahead of Hornish, to rebuild that lead before Watkins Glen and Mid-Ohio. JR Motorsports has a solid road course program and I expect Smith to get at least one top ten between Mid-Ohio and Watkins Glen. 360. murb posted: 06.22.2013 - 10:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "JR Motorsports has a solid road course program and I expect Smith to get at least one top ten between Mid-Ohio and Watkins Glen." He's outscored the field by 16 points over that field. In fact, him and Allgaier give TSM a 1-2 in points scored over that stretch as well. Allgaier's not winning the championship, but that's only because nobody but Regan's going to win it. Allgaier could definitely end up 2nd at the end of the year if he keeps rattling off consistent finishes and capitalizing on his great days like he's been doing this year. And if Larson keeps it up then he's got a great shot at top 5 in points now. I doubt he'll keep up this sudden bout of consistency, but he's gotta win a race before the year's out. TSM's in a good spot of having Allgaier who can contend at the top of the points standings and having Larson who can gun for wins. 362. ch posted: 06.22.2013 - 10:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Same situation as the 23. There are still two more road course races to go and Regan lost half his point lead today due to something beyond his control. If it happens again, either at Watkins Glen or Mid-Ohio, he could lose the rest of his point lead. Let's also not forget that here's another restrictor plate race coming up in just two weeks, and as we know, anything can happen at a restrictor plate race. But I do agree with you about Larson, because he was involved in three incidents within just more than one lap, not all of them his fault, but he's just too inconsistent a driver at this stage of his career, but that's to be expected. Last week, I said that Allgaier would not be in contention for the title. Well, I might just eat those words, because he may be the best on the road courses among the championship contenders, and that may prove to be a big advantage for him with two road races to go. And I wouldn't count out either Austin Dillon or either of the JGR drivers, particularly Elliott Sadler, who's quietly climbed back to fifth in points, and into contention once again. Remember that, since race wins won't be a serious factor in the championship battle, consistency and experience will be keys, and if you look at he top of the championship standings, that's what you'll see. But with three "Wild Card" races still to come (Daytona, Watkins Glen, and Mid-Ohio), there could still be some huge swings in the points. Regan Smith's obviously in the best position, but one more turn of events like today, and the championship race is essentially dead even again. And 13, if not for the transmission failure on the second GWC, Bayne might be within less than 60 points of the lead, and in sixth position in the points, and that #6 team would have everyone else worried if they got back in it, because if any teams knows how to win championships, it's the team that's won the last two. The one difference this year is they have a driver that doesn't figure to give away points, but three mechanical failures have done that in place of an erratic driver. 366. 83andJoe posted: 06.22.2013 - 11:01 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Schroeder51: Yes they should. My only regret is not being able to watch the entire race, as I did see the start but left to go to a friend's house and watched the rest of the race there. Congrats to AJ for getting his first win in the NASCAR Series. Recall that for KBM's trucks /this/ year, it took until June for them to finish sponsoring all of Darrell Wallace Jr.'s races this year, and Joey Coulter is running without sponsorship. Discount Tire wants drivers who are Names and who they can count on to win - and, honestly, given the $$ that has to be coughed up these days for sponsorship (thank you, NASCAR, for having every one of your "cost-cutting" moves make racing /more/ expensive) you really can't blame them. #ajfulltime22 381.
