Dave #38 Fan-Go Gilliland! posted: 07.05.2013 - 4:36 pm Rate this comment: (3) (0) The Long Shot-when Jeff Green was subbing for Eric McClure last year, he performed equal with Mike Bliss, if that team had better equipment and had solid funding for Bliss, Green, and Whitt, they would be one of the best teams in the series. 13. murb posted: 07.05.2013 - 4:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Is it beyond a reasonable doubt that Green could still be a championship contender if he was in better equipment?" I'm sure he could run good. He's always been really underrated. He's obviously a former NNS champion, but even in Cup he wasn't that bad. His RCR run was actually pretty good considering the bad shape they were in as a team during that time, he probably could have been good if he had more time in the 1 car at DEI, and he got five top tens for Haas CNC racing during his stint there. Obviously he's always been a great minor league driver though, so it would be cool to see him in an RCR NNS car or something for a few races (like the 33). He could probably sneak in some good runs. 14. ch posted: 07.05.2013 - 4:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Is it beyond a reasonable doubt that Green could still be a championship contender if he was in better equipment?" Considering that, in qualifying at Daytona, it's the equipment that matters, I would say that the fact that Green was less than 1/100 of a second slower than Matt shows that the equipment really isn't bad. 15. sk posted: 07.05.2013 - 4:40 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) In five of the six races Green finished last year (for TriStar), he finished in the top-20. I don't think he'd be a championship contender but there is no question he'd be a top-ten threat every week in quality equipment. Hard to think of a greater talent being wasted on the start-and-park today than Green. 16. The Long Shot posted: 07.05.2013 - 4:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Another nugget: had Green not withdrawn, all 4 Tri-Star Motorsports cars would have qualified in the top 25 for the first time since Kansas last October. 17. Paul posted: 07.05.2013 - 5:46 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Jeff Green is the most wasted talent in the sport right now. TriStar Motorsports has a great driver lineup with him, Mike Bliss, and Cole Whitt, but unfortunately only have funding for two of them (and Eric McClure, who while I like him, is only there because of his great relationship with Hefty and Reynolds Wrap). I just wish Green could have a full-time ride once again, regardless of how good the equipment is. His limited performances last season in relief of Eric McClure, and then in place of Tayler Malsam after his release, showed that he still has what it takes to compete in this series. 21. NoLongerAnonymous posted: 07.05.2013 - 5:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (2) I don't understand why respected veterans like Jeff Green even take start-and-park jobs. I know some may say it's to keep their name out there, but any team that would really hire a driver because he's recently parked a car probably doesn't have very good management. I'm probably wrong but I can't recall a start-and-park driver who was later picked up by an actual race team. Jeff Green's one of the greatest drivers in series history and instead of talking about that, he's got us talking about his parking abilities. I just can't see how this could do anything but harm to the reputation of a talented driver like Green. 22. Landon Cassill 26. Paul posted: 07.05.2013 - 7:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Landon Cassill used start-and-parking as a way to resurrect his career. He won Nationwide Rookie of the Year in 2008 for JR Motorsports but lost his ride and was all but out of the sport in 2009 (I think he made just one NASCAR start that season). So he humbled himself in 2010, driving the #7 Nationwide car a couple times when Danica wasn't driving before accepting an offer from Larry Gunselman to start-and-park his Cup car for a few races. He did such a good job of parking that season (I believe he qualified in 16 of his 18 attempts) for various teams that when the time came for Phoenix Racing to find a replacement for Bill Elliott four races into the 2011 season, the driver they called was Landon Cassill, who drove all but a handful of the remaining 32 races for that team. Since then, Cassill has driven for BK Racing, Circle Sport, and JD Motorsports as well. Not exactly marquee teams, but certainly opportunities that wouldn't have happened had he not taken on the role of start-and-parker back in 2010. @21: Had Green not taken on the role of start-and-parker for TriStar Motorsports, he wouldn't have been given the opportunity to run a few full distance races for them in 2012 after McClure's injury and Malsam's release. Also, Green's new gig as a start-and-parker only affects his legacy if you want it to. It doesn't change the way I feel about his career, which I believe is one of the greatest in Nationwide Series history. And his 2000 title season still stands as one of the best in series history, even after the Cup teams and drivers took over. @22: I don't have Green's #10 Nesquik car, but I do have the 2003 version of it after Scott Riggs took over. I also have Green's 2002 #30 AOL Chevrolet diecast. 27. Casey Mears, David Gilliland, Aric Almirola, Dave Blaney, J.J. Yeley, Travis Kvapil, David Stremme, and Landon Cassill spring to my mind, although some of these drivers (Mears, Blaney, Yeley, Stremme) never changed teams but were merely fortunate in that their teams ceased start-and-parking. Brad Keselowski never did start-and-park, but he drove for a team (Phoenix Racing) that normally did whenever he wasn't in the car. 28. Two of these races even had passes in the trioval and still no wreck and this doesn't include Nationwide. The big crash is the exception rather than the rule. 104. Brad Keselowski at Talladega shifted his line to make it happen, meanwhile some guys will use some brake to shake the driver on your bumper, or it can happen simply by starting to look outside or inside while not sealed up. It's not definitive that Buescher intentionally threw the race for a Gibbs Toyota while driving a factory-supported Chevrolet. He very easily could've become disconnected, it happens all the time. Don't pretend your idea is the only option. 109. 13 posted: 07.05.2013 - 10:43 pm Rate this comment: (3) (0) Austin Dillon is good at sponsors he even mentioned Parker Kligermans sponsor for him 110. cjs3872 posted: 07.05.2013 - 11:18 pm Rate this comment: (7) (0) Does anyone think that Travis Pastrana's crash was a result of one of the most lame-brained race strategies any team has ever devised? The Roush team had both drivers lay so far back, that they were nearly lapped, and when it was time to move to the front, they were so far back in the field that there was nowhere to go. And that's a shame, because they took away any chance that Trevor Bayne had of running up front, and we know how good he is at the tandem style of racing. But they took his fate out of his hands by one of the worst race strategies Roush or any other team ever devised. This was far worse than what Hendrick did a few years ago, because at least they kept their cars within sight, but Roush's team had their cars run so far back that they had no chance. Even so, Bayne ended up finishing tenth. Imagine what he might have done if he had actually been given a chance. 111. ch posted: 07.05.2013 - 11:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Sponsor Changes: 01 - G&K Services 1 - City Chevrolet 3 - Advocare Spark 12 - PPG Envirobase High Performance 18 - Nyko PlayPad Pro / GameStop 31 - Brandt Trademark Nitrogen 51 - All South Electrical Constructors, Inc. 52 - Donate Life Florida 55 - Viva Motorsports (Same needed for last week at Kentucky) 60 - Roush Fenway Racing 77 - Bandit Chippers 87 - AM/FM Energy Pellet & Wood Stoves 92 - Maddie's Place (Same needed for Richmond) 98 - Spitfire / Curb Records / Denbeste Transportation 99 - Toyota Care 112. It's a strategy that backfires just as often as it works out and it's not really in the spirit of racing. But at least Dale Jarrett would keep up with the pack and usually salvage a decent finish. I don't see why you would pretty much risk going a lap down just so you can have a high chance of missing the wrecks in the first 3/4 of the race just so you have to drive that much more aggressively to make up spots in the last 1/4. The Roush cars took "laying back" too far tonight and I agree that it probably factored into the accident. 113. joey2448 posted: 07.05.2013 - 11:45 pm Rate this comment: (1) (3) I think James Buescher got some pointers on how not to make any moves for the win in the final laps from his cousin, Chris, who failed to step up in the final laps of the ARCA race at Daytona in 2011.... 114. murb posted: 07.05.2013 - 11:50 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Roush's strategy tonight was totally "lame-brained", as CJS put it. You have a former Daytona 500 winner and a guy who was fast at Talladega (before he crashed) as your two drivers. AND you also have the same engines as the two cars that dominated the night. So why idiotically hang WAY back like that when you could probably contend for the lead and the win with your fast cars and good restrictor plate drivers? I guess we can just tally this one up as another Jack Roush Strategy Blunder. 115. 13 posted: 07.06.2013 - 12:11 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) People need to quit bashing on Travis Pastrana, Some people on Roush's Facebook page talk like he has literally crashed every race, Heres his season rundown 1)Daytona 10th 2)Phoenix 28th involved in the Johanna Long, Sam Hornish incident 3)Vegas 10th 4)Bristol 16th solid debut for a rookie and Roush didnt have speed at Bristol that weekend as Trevor Bayne who is pretty good there could only manage 12th 5)Fontana 13th 6)Texas 33rd Had an engine problem i think, anyway he spent time in the garage 7)Richmond 9th after running 30th for half the race 8)Talladega 36th typical restrictor plate crash 9)Darlington 28th Ok just ran terrible here and beat the wall to hell 10)Charlotte 33rd Ok he just crashed here 11)Dover 15th decent for rookie 12)Iowa 32nd got in a crash and slid down track and hit Max papis 13)Michigan 17th after a spin and damage to the left front wheel area 14)Road America 16th ran in top 10 for awhile, but got damage 15)Kentucky 15th qualified 2nd and had a top 10 car but i think some strategy out him out of the top 10 before rains came 16)Daytona 34th Had anothe restrictor plate crash , although they did have an absolutely horrible strategy plan My point is Travis isnt doing that bad for a Rookie, he certainly isnt setting the world on fire, but His worst run this year was Darlington take that away and he is consistently running top 20 in a year where even his teammates team who won the past 2 championships doesnt show any real speed at the track week after week. 116. murb posted: 07.06.2013 - 12:21 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) I think Travis has done a fine job thus far. May as well take second if those are your only choices. It even happened to Buescher earlier in the race while he was pushing Kyle Larson to the lead, and the disconnect caused them to drop back. Even the Busch brothers, who are two of the best at the tandem draft, couldn't stay connected to another car for very long, and I recall one point in the race when Kurt was pushing Brad Sweet, and there was a disconnect of about 2-3 car lengths after Kurt's car basically shoved Sweet's car forward. The only cars that could stay connected for long periods of time were the Penske cars of Logano and Hornish. Buescher didn't lose because he made no attempt to pass Kenseth, he lost because his car couldn't stay connected to Kenseth's back bumper, allowing Kenseth to sail straight into victory lane. I didn't mind Kenseth's victory as much because a.) he doesn't run very many Nationwide races, b.) he drives for a part-time team, c.) he always sounds grateful whenever he goes to victory lane, no matter the series, and d.) his crew chief Matt Lucas gave an emotional interview after getting his first NASCAR win as a crew chief that made the victory a bit of a sentimental favorite. I would have rather seen someone like Buescher, Sadler, or Hornish get the victory, but if it had to be a Cup driver, I don't have any problems with it being Matt Kenseth. Very glad to know that Jason White laid down on the ground after getting out of his wrecked race car due to having the wind knocked out of him, not for any injury he may have suffered. His car just got squashed into the wall after taking a driver-side hit from Pastrana's torpedoing car. Had Roush allowed his two drivers to race up at the front like they did at Talladega (although that wasn't even the plan for that race), they very well might have avoided all the mayhem and both ended up with top ten finishes or better. Cole Whitt was pretty much a sitting duck because after he got separated from not one, but two drafting partners in about two laps, he found himself right in front of Bayne and Pastrana going down the backstretch. Bayne was able to muscle his way passed Whitt from the middle lane, but Pastrana wasn't so lucky as he and Whitt made contact after a crucial error on Pastrana's part when he thought he was clear and tried following Bayne on the inside line. And then for Pastrana's car to dart back down the race track and clobber Robert Richardson's car just added more carnage to an incident that could have been avoided. Considering how Pastrana's wreck last night looked eerily similar to his wreck at Iowa a few weeks ago when his car darted down the track from the outside wall and clobbered Max Papis' car. I'm not so sure if those incidents were mere coincidences, and that perhaps Pastrana himself is the reason why his car rolled down the race track both times. Also, I wouldn't attribute Pastrana's crash to bad luck so much as I would a driver error on Pastrana's part. Good to see Jeff Green finish a race this year. I say that whenever Johanna Long isn't driving the #70 car, NEMCO-JRR should put Green in the #70 and then let Tony Raines drive the #10. To finish 30th (yes I know a few cars got wrecked along the way) and only two laps down in a car that was painfully slow while seldom having a drafting partner is pretty impressive, I think. 128. ch posted: 07.06.2013 - 3:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Sponsor Changes: 18 - Nyko PlayPad Pro / GameStop (Not including Nyko is like saying the #40 is sponsored by e-Cigarettes, need the brand) 31 - Brandt Trademark Nitrogen (Should be the same here as listed last year when the scheme ran) 51 - All South Electrical Constructors (Should be the same here as listed at Daytona in the spring) 98 - Spitfire / Curb Records / Denbeste Transportation (Spitfire had hood / decklid, Curb Records had sides, Denbeste Transportation had quarter panels.
