Not a bad way to start off your debut Nationwide weekend. The Ford's seem pretty slow this weekend with only one Ford qualifying in the top ten and no Roush cars in the top 13. Regan Smith won both practice sessions this weekend, so look for him to be a contender in this race. Brian Vickers is another Nationwide driver to watch out for today. I won't be able to watch this race, but I'm hoping for a Nationwide regular to come out with the victory. 9. He's 2 laps down in 28th, competing with the likes of Jamie Dick, Stanton Barrett, and Eric McClure. Considering that he's driving for Turner Motorsports, which is the best team in the series that doesn't rely on Cup drivers, that is an almost inexcusable performance. To me, at least, he's been the Danica of the Nationwide Series so far. The only reason he's not any lower in points is because of NASCAR's rule about only competing for points in one series. Otherwise, he'd be around 20th in points, maybe lower, and Turner probably wouldn't have a second thought about firing him, considering the success that Allgaier and Larson are having. 40. jabber1990 posted: 07.13.2013 - 4:45 pm Rate this comment: (2) (3) if turner fires him the media will find out about it (including ESPN) and accuse Turner-Scott of being racists 41. He had 2 wins and 15 top tens in 22 races. If he had had just a little more consistency, he would have been in the mix for the championship. But still, he proved that he could win multiple races and run up front, so I think he would have been a serious title contender had he stayed in Trucks this year. And as for Buescher, he's proven in his NNS runs with Turner that he can run for wins and top fives. If he were to get a full season in NNS, I think he'd be right there with Smith, Hornish, Dillon, and Sadler. 54. murb posted: 07.13.2013 - 5:10 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Vickers catching Kyle Busch? How Bayne again rallied to finish as high as he did, I don't know. Certainly being on the outside on those restarts and the four-wide move helped. (By the way, how did he do that with all four tires on the apron without touching anyone when the two guys next to him, Joey Logano and Paul Menard, started that crash?) But Bayne may be losing his ride if Ryan Newman gets signed, and yet it's his luck that he gets in what seemed like a good car in year when all the Roush teams can't set their cars up. Still, he may not be dead yet, because nobody else seems to want the championship, as Regan Smith lost two more points off his lead, and Austin Dillon is really coming, despite being winless this season. (Really, how long can that continue?) But back to the Roush cars. The fact that Billy Johnson's was the highest running Roush car for almost the entire second half of this race just shows me how far they're off this year, because that #6 car should be closer to the front, and the fact that it's as bad as the other Roush cars with a superior driver, and that tells me that the cars are off this year, but Bayne seems to be one of those drivers that always seems to be advancing when the race ends, and that was the case today. In most of the races where he seems to lay back, it looks like he's conserving the equipment. Today, he did the most he could with a bad car, and found a way to almost finish in the top five. The race up front was predictable, though Brian Vickers made Kyle Busch earn the win, because at times, he was just as fast as Kyle was, but in the end, Vickers had to hold off Dillon for second place, which was a good race before the late race cautions came, one after another. And as for the championship race, as mentioned earlier in this post, Regan Smith lost two more points off his lead, with Austin Dillon still charging, but we really won't know where the title battle is heading until after the two road course races at Watkins Glen and Mid-Ohio. I think once those races are run, the championship battle will have some clarity, because those are, in my opinion, the last two wild card races in the Nationwide Series this year. 101. I'd like to see him have an opportunity to run more oval races. 104. The team stats from 2011-2012 tend to go against that. But there's evidence of troubles over the past few years as his visibility at the track has dropped - lack of sponsorship (for a team that used to gobble up everyone else's sponsor), closing down the #6, Kenseth leaving, only 3 Cup wins in 2012. Now with the news that he wants to start scaling back his involvement, the future direction of the team has to be under question. 105. And Jack is 71 years old, so I think he and many of his contemporaries are going to have to slow down, whether they like it or not. The question is, has he placed his organization in a position to compete after he steps down, like Roger Penske, Joe Gibbs, and Richard Childress seem to have been doing in recent years? (I'm not sure how Rick Hendrick is doing in this regard, either.) That's one reason I believe that Michael Waltrip could be positioning himself to be one of the next dominant car owners, because as far as car owners go, Waltrip is one of the younger ones, and he finished second in the points last year (and is there currently) with Clint Bowyer and won last month with Martin Truex, Jr. All he needs is a superstar driver, and then I think his could very well become the next dominant team in the sport. 107. As a result, both drivers will be eligible for the upcoming Nationwide "Dash 4 Cash" race. Three straight finishes outside the top ten drops Justin Allgaier from 2nd to 4th in points. Considering how much of a role that Hornish and Dillon have been on as of late, Allgaier's championship hopes might have just ended. There's still hope for he and his team, but considering how playing the consistency game is often their biggest strength, this latest run of being consistently outside the top ten is the opposite of progress for the #31 team. Parker Kligerman, another driver whose last top ten finish occurred at Road America (3rd), finishes outside the top 15 for the third straight race, causing him to drop from 6th to 10th in the points. I think he's been one of the more impressive Nationwide drivers this season considering his equipment and how often he's been in or near the top five in points, and it's a shame that he's now ranked at the bottom of the top ten after three disappointing runs as of late. Part of me almost hopes that Brian Vickers gets the MWR Cup ride next season just so Kligerman might get a shot at a top flight JGR ride in 2014, where he should be a serious title contender. Kyle Larson's 8-race top ten streak comes to an end as he finished 14th in this race. Meanwhile, fellow rookie driver Alex Bowman gets his second top ten finish in the last three races, and is the highest finishing rookie driver for the first time since Talladega. 111. Elliott Sadler is being a total asshat about the accidental contact Regan Smith made with him in this race. Sadler not happy with Smith after New Hampshire: An angry #11-Elliott Sadler told #7-Regan Smith he wasn't going to win the Nationwide Series championship after Smith turned Sadler while they battled for third on the final restart Saturday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Sadler finished 18th in The Profit 200 while Smith held on for an eighth-place finish. "He just said he lost control of his car," Sadler said afterward. "I don't know why he has to race us that way. I don't race him that way. He admitted he lost control of his car and took us out." Losing those 15 spots at the end of the race, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver fell from third to fifth in the standings, 24 points behind Smith. "You will not win this championship, mark my word," Sadler yelled at Smith afterward in the garage. Smith took the blame. "The 20 (of Brian Vickers) went to block him and he went down to block me and I had a run on the inside so I went in there and got way down on the flat (of the apron)," Smith said. "I lost the nose of my car and then slid sideways trying to keep off of him initially there and when I did, it snapped back into him and took him out. It's my fault. I hate that happened. You can't take it back."(Sporting News)(7-13-2013) 113. Nothing came of that incident afterwards. I wouldn't read too much into Sadler's latest threat against Regan Smith. However, if I'm Regan Smith, I'm just glad that I didn't wreck the other JGR Nationwide driver, Brian Vickers. Remember what happened to Matt Kenseth back at Phoenix in the fall of 2011 after he dumped Vickers at Martinsville a few weeks earlier? Vickers has a mean streak in him, Sadler does not. Sadler's just frustrated at how disappointing his season has been since joining JGR, and he's just passing that frustrated energy onto Regan. 114. cjs3872 posted: 07.14.2013 - 8:24 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) And murb, Regan Smith was not the only driver that Sadler was angry with yesterday, because he also had some choice words for Trevor Bayne regarding the restart where Sadler got a bad restart, and almost got taken out when Bayne and Michael Annett got together when Bayne moved up on Annett, not knowing he was there, so Smith wasn't the only driver that Sadler had choice words for yesterday. 115. Sounds pretty similar to his errant move in front of Jason Leffler back at Phoenix 2011 that knocked him out of title contention, including the post-race angry comments directed towards the driver who got into him. See the common denominator? Also, while both drivers were understandably upset after they had good runs taken away from them late in their respective races, I find it very telling that the 21-year old Ty Dillon was more professional in his post-race interview at Iowa than the 38-year old Sadler was at Loudon. Sadler's a nice guy and comes off as very professional most of the time, but in the heat of the moment, he has the tendency to do or say things that he probably regrets afterwards. 117.
