As much as it would delight most fans to see Trevor win at another showplace track, I don't think anyone would be able to stand to see that car in victory lane. Besides, I don't think we'll have to worry about that unless Kyle Busch breaks, or has some other kind of problem. Saying that, Bayne I one of those championship-eligible drivers that can take chances, unlike those at the top of the point standings, who have to be a little more conservative to protect their positions up there. Being tied for ninth in points and nearly two full races back, Bayne and crew chief Mike Kelley can afford to gamble more than someone like Sam Hornish, Jr. or Regan Smith can. 20. Unser1 posted: 07.27.2013 - 7:57 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) When Martin was winning all those races it wasn't as big a deal for a few reasons other than "Mark was likeable... 1. Mark and the Winn-Dixie team didn't enter every event, he usually only ran about half the races and even then he wasn't invincible (Mark never won more than 7 races in a season, Kyle's won more than 8 five times including 2013). Mark didn't even run all the companion races back then. 2. Building on that first one Mark never interferred with the championship. Kyle won the title in 2009 3. When Mark was winning there were still a lot of Busch guys winning even in companion races. In 1995 there were 26 races with 16 companion events of which the Busch regulars won 8 of them (plus a win for Kenny Wallace at Richmond not running either series full time that year). The Busch guys also won all but two of the non-campanion races with only Terry Labonte's win at the Glen (on a Cup off weekend) and Dale Jarrett's win at Milwaukee with non-Cup teams mixing it up. 4. While Martin did not do so the other Cup drivers of the era mainly ran in their own equipment (Terry Labonte, Bobby Labonte, Dale Jarrett, Dale Earnhardt pre-1994, Jeff Gordon's short-lived dabble in 1999-2000) and they were a lot easier to beat as such. Due to the misfortunes of three of the top five in the points, Austin Dillon took the point lead, despite not having won a race this year, and he really only has four more chances, the two road course races, and the stand-alone races at Iowa and Kentucky. Having him, or anyone else win a championship without winning a race will give the sport, and this series a black eye. Dillon is not likely to win any of he other races because he can't be aggressive enough to try for the win, because he really will be only trying to beat those he has to beat for the championship. However, the five-way battle may have become a four-way battle, with Justin Allgaier dropping out of contention before the race even started with an engine-related problem. Brian Vickers is holding on by a thread in fifth place, 28 points back, as Allgaier dropped to sixth, 35 points, or virtually a full race behind leader. On the other hand, being the points leader has been a jinx. Sam Hornish had it before running into trouble, giving the lead to Regan Smith, who led by as many as 58, but he ran into trouble again, handing the lead back to Hornish. But just as than Hornish got the lead again, he had engine trouble, losing the lead again. Now Dillon has it for the first time, and he hopes he isn't jinxed like the other points leaders have been. But barring something REALLY out of the ordinary happening, the championship-eligible drivers have only four races left they can win, and two of them are on road courses. This may finally be the year that one of NASCAR's top three series has a winless champion. And by the way, Clint Bowyer's sitting in second in the Cup Series point standings without a win, though that will cost him at the reset if he remains winless. 181. 18fan posted: 07.27.2013 - 8:11 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) "4. First off, Tony didn't "obviously" cause that sprint car wreck. If you go back and look at it, you'll see that he got put three wide and basically had nowhere to go. When the news first came out, I was blaming him too, but I went back and watched it about 20 times, and now it is pretty evident that it was a racing deal that caused that wreck. The ill will towards Tony for that one was unnecessary. And also, the difference between Mark dominating the Busch Series in the 90s and Kyle dominating NNS this day in age is that it seemed like the main reason Mark was there was to help the series grow. Meanwhile, Kyle and his compadres (Brad, Joey, Harvick) have done the complete opposite. Unlike Mark and all the old Cup guys that used to double dip, they've come in and have constantly acted like they have no respect for the NNS-only teams/drivers, and have also acted like their only reason for being there is so they can chase the Nascar "all time wins in all three series" record (since all of a sudden winning 59 NNS races is just as important as winning 59 Cup races). I do agree though that Kyle (and the other Whackers) shouldn't be the only one(s) blamed for all of this (all of the "Kryle Douche" stuff earlier I think was just heat of the moment frustration). The media should be ridiculed a hell of a lot more than they already are for their constant promotion of NNS as just the Saturday Cup race. And as we've obviously documented, the team owners and sponsors are definitely at fault for having these Cup guys running so many races in their superior equipment. I don't know. It wasn't as bad as today, but he laid out the groundwork for guys like Kyle Busch, Joey Logano, Brad Keselowski, Carl Edwards (at least he finally stopped, thank God) and Kevin Harvick to just make this series unwatchable. We at least finally have some decent Nationwide regulars, though most of them are Cup rejects trying to revive their careers (Sadler, Hornish, Smith, Vickers) and even they struggle to take on the Cup guys in Cup equipment (that is the worst part of it all IMO). The only young guys in the series I see making it to Cup and having some sort of impact are Austin Dillon (mainly because "PopPop" will see to it) and Kyle Larson. There are some guys with talent like Kligerman, Bowman, Allgaier, Annett, etc. but I don't see them landing the equipment to be successful in Cup. To my first point though, a few drivers have won Cup titles with just one win seasons, and several have almost won it with winless seasons. Most recenelty, Matt Kenseth was the 2003 Champ with just 1 win, and reaching back a ways James Hylton was the 1971 runner up without a win and fewer top 5's (14) than Richard Petty had wins (21). I agree with @193, it's going to be really hard to limit Cup participation though I guess you can make a few tweaks to at least make one or two more races Busch/Logano/Keselowski free. Maybe in non-companion races, make a rule that you can only compete in one race that weekend? That would at least make Iowa a bit more competitive amongst the NNS. Iowa seems to get great turnout anyway, so it wouldn't really hurt attendance would it? That's only two races but it's two races for someone to stand out. I wonder what next year looks like. I'm assuming Austin Dillon moves up to Cup and Ty replaces him, and with Vickers all but signed to the #55 maybe Darrell Wallace, Jr. steps in the #20? I really hope Pastrana stays in the #60 but I wonder what Bayne does as Chris Buescher is waiting. I also would love to see Piquet come back and I bet TSM keeps him around along with Larson and hopefully James Buescher. 195. It's a JGR car, so either another Elliot Sadler will get the #20 or more likely Denny Hamlin will be tapped to run it. Giving young drivers quality seat time is not the JGR way. See: Aric Almirola, Matt DiBenedetto, Brad Coleman, their Truck series venture where no one not named Gibbs drove the truck in 3 years of operation, Drew Herring, Marc Davis, and Travis Kittleson. The only recent examples to buck this trend would be Joey Logano, Brian Scott, possibly Ryan Truex if he didn't get injured, Denny Hamlin and JJ Yeley. And among those, Scott was just used as an R&D guinea pig. I also think DWJ needs at least one more full Truck season 199. OldSchoolNascarDude1 posted: 07.28.2013 - 2:02 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Here is a solution to end the Cup guys dominating the lower ranks: 1) A NASCAR driver that finishes the prior season out of the top 35 in Cup, or have less than 10 career Cup starts, they are exempt from being withheld from any event. 2) Any NASCAR Cup driver than finishes inside of the top 35 in points can pick 10 "regular" events from the Truck and Nationwide schedule to participate in for full points and purse money. 3) After those 10 events are picked/ran, the Cup driver can still pick any other event that he wishes to participate in, BUT after the 10 scheduled races are ran - The owner/driver isn't eligible for points, the owner/driver are only rewarded 10 percent of the purse winnings, the car number for the Cup driver is only eligible for 50 percent of the scheduled practice time for the race of the particular series the Cup driver is competing in. I realize this system has its flaws, but something needs to be done. Yes, I understand guys like Dillon, Larson, Bowman, Kligerman etc. want to compete against Cup drivers. It's a good barometer for them. But, teams like JD Motorsports, TriStar, GoGreen, ML, etc are not financially capable of even being in the same breath as the Cup affiliated teams. Cutting some Cup teams/drivers from the lower series may eliminate jobs from people associated with those teams, but some of the lower tier teams are going to completely bomb out if something isn't done, too. Hopefully sponsors can respect that and support young drivers. 220.
