It's more like they left me in my time of need considering I needed to play so well that I wouldn't miss the race. It's frustratingly bad. Pretty sure we've had to punt on all but one drive and on that other drive we fumbled the ball. 21-0 at halftime. "Stand alone race that everyone including me wanted to see but has like 250 ppl show up to it" Which is why the "claim jumpers" issue is much more complicated than we would all like it to be. We all want Nationwide standalone races, which may be good for TV (assuming they don't fricken show it on ESPNews), but I think the evidence is strong that for actual in-person attendance, a lack of Sprint Cup stars is not a good thing. That's not a popular opinion, but it seems to be the truth. People go to races to see the big names and, for the record, I don't it's up to me or anyone else to decide whether or not that person is a true fan. "Come on, no one really wants to Alabama beat up on a creampuff..." Unfortunately, speaking as a resident of Alabama, I know plenty of people who really do want to watch Alabama beat up on a creampuff and they will be quite obnoxious about it. It's kind of sad really. The funny part is, Alabama isn't really playing that well. 17-6 last time I checked. On an unrelated note, Kim Coon finally tweeted me today, but we sort of disagreed on what was being discussed so that was a bit of a bummer... 57. Schroeder51 posted: 09.21.2013 - 9:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I hate to say it, but I've got to agree with Zachary Shawn. Times have changed and it seems few people are willing to attend races in which their personal favorites aren't racing in. They'd rather see the established stars they know and love rather than up and comers. To be brutally honest, I actually think casual fan attendance of (and interest in the series in general) Nationwide races would be HIGHER if the majority of the field was filled with Cup stars, not just Kyle Busch, Brad Keselowski/Joey Logano, and Kevin Harvick. People like the opportunity to see their favorites for less than half the price they would pay for a Cup Series ticket. As I've said before, as much as I would like to see NASCAR step in and do something to limit Cup driver participation in this series, I don't see anything that could work that wouldn't either drive all the sponsors out or drive most of the fans off. Basically, I hate to say it but I really think we're just going to have to live with the Nationwide Series as it is-mostly dominated by Cup drivers. 61. We were actually discussing the economic benefits of sports teams and whether or not their stadiums should be publicly funded. I thought sports are a huge money maker for cities and that stadiums would, essentially, pay for themselves because of the economic activity created. Looks like I was wrong. It's kind of crazy that there's so much corruption involved in sports, yet if there wasn't sports may disappear and a lot of people would be very upset. 67. Sky Warrior posted: 09.21.2013 - 10:10 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) "People go to races to see the big names" Actually, I disagree. I think the reason the companion races have higher attendance is from all the people already there for the Cup race and people who get package deals on tickets. Kentucky has 1 Truck, 2 Nationwide and 1 Cup race, 3 of those come on the same weekend. If I'm a race fan in the Kentucky area, I'm going for the triple weekend if it's in the budget instead of the standalone race, because as much as we hate seeing Cup guys dominate on tv, most people don't go to that many races, so quantity can trump quality when it comes to being there 71. epzik8 posted: 09.21.2013 - 10:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This is getting really boring! 72. All non-regulars. Let's say that Sam Hornish Jr. is the only good regular on the day, he's in 4th with a faster car and fresher tires than Keselowski and Kenseth and probably going to catch both of them. Austin Dillon is running a distant 9th. Suddenly Sam's CC comes over the radio "Alright Sam, 8 laps to go, just points race here." Sam has no motivation to pass Kenseth or Keselowski because he would get 43 points for being the highest finishing regular anyway, so he doesn't even bother racing them. In addition to that, something unfair to Hornish happens in that instead of Sam getting 40 4th place points (or more if he races the Cup guys) and Austin Dillon getting 35 9th place points, suddenly Sam gets 43 1st place points if no laps led and minus the winner's 3 point bonus and Austin gets 42 2nd place points, even though Sam Hornish put 4 other cars in between them. But that's pretty much the point. When a driver goes high or low to make it 3 or 4 wide we accept that as being a legitimate (if not without risk) racing move, not as being "toolish". Sure, that situation can't last through a corner and someone is going to have to lift for everyone to get through intact but putting a fellow driver in a situation where he has to lift or make contact is considered acceptable, especially late in the race. That's what I suspect Whitt was doing to Kligerman. He stuck his nose under Kligerman knowing Kligerman would have to lift (losing the spot) or get wrecked (worse). Kligerman should've swallowed his pride and lifted. He didn't and paid the price. 136. b4il3y posted: 09.22.2013 - 1:09 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Ryan has the skills. Watto posted: 09.22.2013 - 1:37 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I get what you mean Jim and I often agree with you, but I look at it a little differently here. With Vickers running the middle of the track as high as he was, I simply think that Cole Whitt was putting his nose in a spot that was way too tight to work. Cars don't usually run any higher than Parker was there because of marbles that high (even through the tri-oval, or on the straightaway). I don't look at 3 wide as being toolish - you can race 3 wide almost anywhere on the schedule, with some exceptions, of course. Sometimes you can make 4 wide work without it being a "toolish move". However, Cole Whitt put his nose in a gap that had very little likelihood of working, which is why I found him to blame more than Kligerman. Parker came down a couple of inches if at all. It was a dumb move to make, in my opinion. I don't think any spotter in the world would've told Parker to just drive it up the track and let those guys go by. Cole's done a good job in that car and has lots of talent, I just thought he was being way overaggressive in trying to make a tiny gap work when it clearly wasn't the move to make. Parker was turned before the spotter could've even said that he had a car squeezing between him and Vickers 141. It's crazy to think about how fast things change in NASCAR. As I've said before, my first full season was 2000. Here's a look at where the top 10 drivers that year are now. 1) Bobby Labonte-hasn't won a race in 10 years, no current ride for next year. 2) Dale Earnhardt-deceased. 3) Jeff Burton-hasn't won a race in 5 years, no current ride for next year. 4) Dale Jarrett-retired. 5) Ricky Rudd-retired. 6) Tony Stewart-still competitive, won championship 2 years ago. 7) Rusty Wallace-retired. 8) Mark Martin-semi-retired, hasn't won a race in 4 years, no current ride for next year. 9) Jeff Gordon-still somewhat competitive, but wins don't come as easily and he won his last title 12 years ago. 10) Ward Burton-essentially retired. 2 guys, and even that may be a bit of a stretch, actually compete for wins every week out of the top 10 drivers of 2000. That's crazy for me to think about. 144. We need more Onion posted: 09.22.2013 - 5:51 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Well Zackary, I don't think things change fast in NASCAR, compared to other motorsports, many drivers have insane career spans. Compare it to other motorsport's 2000 seasons: F1 - 1 driver competing in F1 now, who was a rookie in 2000 (Button) 3 more drivers active, but currently without a ride. Indycar - Nobody on the IRL side, on the CART side one driver still doing full-time (Castroneves) and 1 due to return in 2014 (Montoya) DTM - Not driver active in touring cars from the top 10, 12th Scheider is still in the series. MotoGP - Only active rider from the top 10 is Rossi. V8 Supercars - 3 drivers still on full schedule, all 3 are champions, soon to be legends. So compared to NASCAR's 2 guys still competing for wins, these 5 series have 4 drivers amongst them still competing for wins. (If you count Button and Rossi) 145. 83andJoe posted: 09.22.2013 - 7:15 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) >I'm also extremely intrigued by the potential of younger, less known drivers such as Erik Jones, Ross Chastain, Cole Whitt, and Kevin Swindell. Indeed; I think Erik Jones has a higher ceiling than Chase Elliott did, and Kyle Busch made a major coup by snapping him up for his Truck team. Chastain has proven he has the chops to make it - going part-time for BKR instead of continuing in SS-Green Light's putt-putt mobiles was a career move, if Blaney moves "up and out" of the 29 truck (which I strongly suspect he will) I hope Chastain gets it full-time.
