The fact that Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., a driver that fits the Nationwide car hand and glove, is struggling to even stay in the top ten, should tell Roush he's got bigger problems in the NNS than he even thought. Danica or Pastrana?" Danica by far. Pastrana has underwhelmed me this year, but he's also had a lot of bad luck. And that Roush NNS program isn't exactly great this year either, judging from Trevor's runs this year. Danica is in SHR/Hendrick equipment, and is steadily getting worse at every track she revisits, which is the total opposite of what she should be doing as she gets more seat time. And it's only Pastrana's first year too. Danica has a couple more years in stock cars under her belt. 50. I don't think either is bad, but neither has had the lower series experience, both Nationwide and either ARCA, Trucks, or K&N, that they need to be decent drivers. Their respective owners are more interested in using them as publicity stunts than developing their talent 51. Considering how he only has two Nationwide victories (including one with an illegal car) and none this season, a victory by Austin Dillon in this series would certainly be different. I know he's a Cup driver, but I was really pulling for Denny Hamlin to win this race. After all he's been through this season on the Cup side (Missing five races due to a back injury, 16 consecutive finishes outside the top ten, missing the Chase for the first time, and in the midst of his first winless season in Cup.), he really needed something positive to come out of this race. He didn't get the win, but this runner-up finish in his first Nationwide race of the season could be a great confidence booster for Hamlin. 64. Paul posted: 11.02.2013 - 6:31 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) "I wonder if these Cup drivers would still enter Nationwide races if NASCAR credited the win to the top finishing series regular." I'm a big proponent for NASCAR to do just that. Kind of like how various sports car racing series have the field divided into different classes based on what car bodies they use, NASCAR could divide the fields based on whether the drivers are points eligible in that series or not. I would make it so that the points, prize money, and laps led count would be awarded based on the drivers' overall finishing position/race performance, but award a series win (and perhaps top-5 and top-10 finishing positions in the stat sheet) to the highest finishing points eligible driver(s). I think that this would be a win-win situation for all involved in the series. The Nationwide/Truck Series drivers would get to showcase their talents against some of the "Buschwhacking" Cup drivers, while also having a race amongst themselves to prove which series regular is the best. Plus, it wouldn't hinder any Cup driver, teams, or big named sponsors from participating in the series because they can still attempt to seek an overall victory every time they hit the race track. And because the points, prize money, and laps led bonuses would only be awarded to drivers based on their overall running/finishing positions, drivers would still be encouraged to race against all other drivers in the race, points eligible or not. This idea might sound kind of cheap because it makes it possible for lower series drivers to win without being the first driver to take the checkered flag, but it's certainly a simpler, cheaper way of generating excitement in the Nationwide/Truck Series without having to rearrange the schedules or limiting how many lower series races the Cup drivers are allowed to compete in. 69. Zackary Shawn posted: 11.02.2013 - 6:39 pm Rate this comment: (4) (0) "I wonder if these Cup drivers would still enter Nationwide races if NASCAR credited the win to the top finishing series regular." Wouldn't this hurt competition, though? For example, even if Hornish had the car to hang with Keselowski and Hamlin what would be his motivation to go up and race for the win, when he would essentially already be winning the race by finishing third? And when the drivers have a lack of motivation, the fans suffer the most because they just won't race as hard as they would otherwise (which isn't that hard these days, anyway). My idea is simply limit the number of races Cup drivers can race in. Look at Dale Jr.'s Nationwide schedule to show what an ideal Cup/Nationwide schedule should look like. 70. Jim Davis posted: 11.02.2013 - 8:37 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) "My idea is simply limit the number of races Cup drivers can race in." Your idea would also limit the number of races their sponsors would be willing to pay for and hence is a nonstarter. The problem is not getting the cup drivers out of the lower series. That would be an easy problem to fix. The problem is getting the cup drivers out of the lower series without losing the money they bring in. That's a much harder nut to crack. 71. I know my response is late, but I think the reason for this attitude nowadays is because of how close the field is. 30-40-50 years ago, if Richard Petty was caught up in lap traffic while leading, he wouldn't be too worried about being held up by the lappers because it usually would not hurt him at all, because there wouldn't be many other drivers within range of him. I mean, there would typically be only 3-4 cars on the lead lap, so it wasn't such a big ordeal to be caught up in traffic. Today, the leader can't afford to be held up by lapped cars because there are others right there to pounce on him. 75. It's considered bad racing etiquette for lapped cars to affect the lead battles. This is not a new phenomenon at all. Of course, nowadays radio communications are played more often so you get a little more of it. It's really not a "today's drivers" thing. It's always been a thing. 76.
