Not just because of the scoring mess during the first caution because of when the caution came out and Brad Keselowski's position on pit road, but also because the ESPN feed was lost for about 5-7 minutes, at least where I live. Both ESPN, which is covering one of the scores of NCAA conference championships, and ESPN2, which is covering this race, went off at precisely the same time for about 5-7 minutes around the 30th lap. However, I think any other broadcast team would present the Nationwide series the same way they do, except for maybe Kyle Petty and Wally Dallenbach. I read that some drivers were saying that the pace car wasn't maintaining a consistent speed on the pace laps and that could be contributing to the amount of speeding penalties, although speeding penalties have always been abundant in NNS races at Vegas. 34. I was upset and preferred to see him start running up front in Cup (which he started doing the next year), but I admit that I cheered Brad on anyway given that he's one of my favorites. After 2010 though, I've been rooting against him in Nationwide races. As for Larson, I actually think he should go ahead and do as many Nationwide races as he can since Ganassi threw him to the wolves by putting him in Cup this early. He needs as much seat time as he can get. After this year though, I'll root against him in Nationwide if he continues to run a lot of races. Chase Elliott had a great run, running as high as second before winding up fifth, as did Kyle Larson, and I vehemently disagree with those saying Kyle Larson shouldn't be running the Nationwide Series while running Cup this year. I have no problem with Kyle Larson running the NNS, because he needs all the track time he can get. I'm normally against drivers trying to run both series, but Larson fits into that category of drivers that have fewer than the number of Cup seasons or starts to put him under race limit for the lower series. He got rushed by Chip Ganassi because there was nobody else to replace Juan Montoya in the #42 car. Also, Brian Scott is once again proving the point I made last year about Joe Gibbs not even caring his championship-eligible drivers, as he ran in the top six practically all day and eventually finished seventh. He couldn't find the front with a compass when he drove for Gibbs, but he's found the front with Richard Childress, and the opposite is true for Elliott Sadler. He was winning races for Childress, but he can't even get out of his own way driving for Gibbs. Trevor Bayne keeps finishing in the top ten in cars with a definite horsepower deficit, compared to the competition, even getting lapped at one point. Certainly, the handling of his car also needs to get better, but he's got no chance at the speedways driving cars that seem like they have a restrictor plate on them. At one point in the race, Roush's three cars were one, two, and three laps down, though two of them ended up in the top ten. He's one driver that would be interesting to see what he could do if he got some horsepower. If he continues this pace of consistency, he could very well do what Austin Dillon did last year, and win the championship without winning a race. I believe his only chances to win are the shorter tracks and the two remaining plate races, unless he wins one on fuel mileage. Regan Smith caught somewhat of a tough break when he hit the wall late, but got really lucky because there were only four laps remaining at the time he hit the wall, and there were no cars one lap down at the time (he was one of just 10 on the lead lap), so he ended up tenth. 93. 23andJoe posted: 03.08.2014 - 8:05 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #19 sponsor: TriStar Motorsports #28 sponsor: JGL Racing #43 sponsor: Winfield #44 sponsor: TriStar Motorsports #70 sponsor: Charlie's Soap #93 sponsor: JGL Racing 94. Usually, that's a result of a suspension piece wearing out more than expected during the race, so I don't think that's anything significant. Now, Brad Keselowski's right rear shock being confiscated by NASCAR is a much bigger situation, because there's a real chance that his team did something deliberate to give them an advantage, because on a high-speed oval, there's a big advantage to having the right rear of the car higher, because that would allow the right-hand part of the rear spoiler to catch more of the air, which would give the car in question (in this case, Brad Keselowski's #22 car) a very big advantage. I also wonder if that's what Penske has been doing in both the Cup and Nationwide Series that has given his cars a big edge. Remember that his cars have swept the front row for both of the races with open motors in the Cup Series this year, and what they might be doing with the right rear of the car is a reason why. And this is the same type of thing Penske got busted for in the Cup Series last year. My question is, did NASCAR find this out on their own, or was Penske turned in by another team, and if they were turned in, who did it? I asked this question when Penske suddenly had those violations at Texas last year (also regarding the right rear of the car), and two teams turned up as possible culprits, Hendrick (especially the #48 team) and Roush. I wonder if Penske was turned in by a competing team this time, as well. 102. DB1995 posted: 03.08.2014 - 9:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Jeff Gluck (I think)tweeted that NASCAR takes shock back all the time and a lot of the time nothing comes from it, so it could be nothing or it could be huge. 103. cjs3872 posted: 03.08.2014 - 10:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) But DB1995, the timing sure seems funny for them to confiscate the right rear shock, especially at a place where getting the right rear higher in the air would e a big advantage, and the team that got the part taken has been on the front row for each of the first two Cup races this year that require handling and downforce, where a higher rear end, especially the right rear, would be a significant advantage. And let's not forget that this is the same organization that got busted for rear suspension infractions last year at Texas on both of it's Cup cars. It's for those reasons why I think there might be something fishy going on here. 104. I wish more sponsors in this series were like them." The thing is that Lagasse wasn't as good as that car was. What would've been nice is if they kept Jason Keller in that car when they started getting Joe Gibbs support. The sponsor you're referring to simply left the team - they didn't sponsor Lagasse anywhere else. Good chance they were leaving the team anyway and that's why CJM dropped Lagasse. Truth of the matter is, though, that 11 car ran the best it ever did when they dropped Lagasse. It's not like Hamlin became their new driver; they also ran Brian Scott, Andrew Ranger, Kelly Bires, Trevor Bayne, and Mike Bliss. Mike Bliss came insanely close to winning with them. 105. He's one driver that would be interesting to see what he could do if he got some horsepower." To be fair, though, Trevor Bayne DOES have some horsepower - the 22 and the 6 run the same engines. We've also seen what Trevor could do with some horsepower as he was in those Roush Nationwide cars when they were making the most horsepower in the series and Carl Edwards was winning often. Roush-Yates gives the 22 and the 6 the same support, so I think it's more chassis than horsepower. As for the three Roush cars as a whole, I don't see Ryan Reed becoming a contender in this series, but Chris Buescher may continue to improve. Neither of which are quite on Bayne's level. 106. During that time, we never saw what Trevor Bayne could do in those cars, because not long after his Daytona 500 win in 2011, he came up with the health problems that late last year was diagnosed as multiple sclerosis. That knocked him out for nearly three months, and he really didn't recover until about September, and then he started running with the other cars, and the NNS race he won late in the year, he won by stealing it from Carl Edwards on a late restart, and in 2012, sponsorship problems knocked him out of the car after just five races, so again, he never got a chance to show what he could do. Then last year, when he gets his full-time shot, it comes just as Penske rejoins the Ford ranks, and after a few good early runs, they being to struggle, not just with the chassis, which is lacking, but also with the horsepower due to Roush's more conservative engine setups, which has dogged that organization for about 15-20 years. And the real tell that Roush is struggling with both engines and chassis in the Nationwide Series came last fall at Texas when Stenhouse ran one of Roush's cars, and even he wasn't competitive. On the 1.5 mile tracks, horsepower means much more in the NNS than it does in the Cup Series, and as the season got longer, they got less competitive. Also, in the NNS and Cup Series combined, Roush won four times last year, and of those four, three of them came on tracks 1 mile or less in length, and when it came time for the Chase, which is dominated by big tracks, Roush struggled across the board, especially with it's top car, the #99 of Carl Edwards, as they went from the pre-Chase reset leader to last in the Chase, and Greg Biffle didn't do much better. And Roush has always struggled when it comes to racing for championships in the Cup Series, and a large piece of why goes back to his conservative engine setups, which end up getting them beat. When Roush does well, it's usually because his cars handle better than anyone else's (1998 and 2008 are perfect examples of this), but when their cars are off, they're WAY off and have a hard time even running in the top 15-20, with 2001, the first half of 2010, and the Chase last year being prime examples of this. 111. Watto posted: 03.09.2014 - 8:56 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Roush is definitely not at the top of their game right now, I definitely agree, and it'll be interesting to see how they run in race-mode today at Vegas. I just wasn't sure that they'd be giving up a horsepower advantage to Penske, for instance, on tuning. It'd be really cool to see some dyno charts, but I don't recall NASCAR releasing those in the last few years. I find that type of stuff really interesting. I think Trevor Bayne is a talent, but I think his ceiling is lower than guys who go on to stand out in the Cup Series. Because of this, I wouldn't really expect him to win the Nationwide title unless he has a big equipment advantage on his opponents. This year, it certainly could be interesting with Ty Dillon being a Nationwide rookie, the documented struggles of the 3rd Gibbs car, and Regan & Chase leading JRM. If Las Vegas is any indication, Chase can really surprise people this year, and he's likely to be a more mature driver than Ty Dillon at this point. I don't know who I'd pick to win the title this year, honestly. I was all-in on Brian Vickers last year, and clearly I was a little bit off in that prediction :) 112. We keep hearing all these 76 jokes, but seriously going back to last year.....the "76" has combined to win 27 of the past 36 Nationwide races. That is 75 freakin' percent!!! What is worse is that if you take away the 4 "wildcard" restrictor plate races in that timeframe, it's up to 27/32, those teams have won 84% of the non-RP races these past two years. Now, the 22 did produce a few feel good wins for A.J. Allmendinger and Ryan Blaney, but still....those two teams are head and shoulders above everyone else it isn't even funny. I don't know what NASCAR can do about it, but it has created an awful environment for this series and I feel like it gets worse with every year. It wouldn't shock me if we go a long, long time with someone other than the 76 winning a non plate race in this series. (I'd actually bet on them not winning Talladega since Kyle won't be driving and Penske hasn't been that successful in their plate racing NW program). This series just makes me sick, this race was the first I've gotten to watch in a while and it just reminded me why this series is in awful shape. I don't mind Cup drivers racing in this series, Dale Jr. does it perfectly by running a handful a year mainly at tracks he struggles with for more seat time. Kevin Harvick has stepped into a better role with the series only running around 10-12 a year. But guys like Kyle and Brad are just making it unbearable. Thing is, the majority of Cup full time drivers won't even make a single start in the series this year, it is just the ones who do run nearly all of them. 116. Remember that he's one of those drivers that would be better suited to the longer races the Cup Series runs than the shorter sprint-type races in the Nationwide Series, and one of his greatest abilities is one that he can't really use in the Nationwide Series, and that's his ability to pace himself, analyze the race, and wait for the time to strike. Even his two wins in the Nationwide Series (Texas in 2011 and Iowa last year) came in races where he laid back and waited until the end to make his move. That's an ability he can't really use to his advantage in the Nationwide Series because of the shorter length of the races, but if he ever does land a good ride in the Cup Series, that ability may really come in handy. Bayne's not a charger, like Kyle Busch, Kyle Larson, and some of the other younger drivers are, but he's one of those from the Darrell Waltrip mold, in that he'll analyze a race and wait out the competition, and if his trials and tribulations have taught him one thing, it's patience, and that would figure to serve him better in the longer races the Cup Series runs than it would in the shorter races the Nationwide Series runs. There's a reason why some of the most successful drivers in the Cup Series didn't do that well in the Nationwide Series, and why guys who tore it up in the Nationwide Series never cut it in the Cup Series. 119. numbah10hatah posted: 03.09.2014 - 2:42 pm Rate this comment: (0) (2) Instead of calling Chase Elliott the next Jeff Gordon, he should be the next Jimmie Johnson the way he cheats all the time. 120.
