That's why they don't have a time listed. The inspection line was backed up with a lot of drivers and crews trying to make it through before the 30-minute opening qualifying session was over, and many (including Ryan Blaney) barely got through in time and only got a single lap in. Wanna point out David Starr, who made it through to the final 12-car shootout in qualifying, and will start 12th. 16. Sky Warrior posted: 04.04.2014 - 8:16 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) J.J. Kyle Busch? Or some other Cup driver? 18. cjs3872 posted: 04.04.2014 - 8:33 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Funny thing is that this makes two races in a row that the #54 of Kyle Busch didn't get to qualify because they failed pre-qualifying inspection. The same thing happened to them at Fontana. I wonder what's going on there. Also, it's interesting that the #60 failed inspection, causing Chris Buescher not to be able to make a qualifying run, because at Fontana, the #6 team of Trevor Bayne had the exact same problem, though unlike Busch, Bayne did get out in time to make a qualifying run and qualified 13th. And by the way, I look for Brian Scott to make a run early in this race, mainly because he qualified 13th. That means that he'll be on fresher tires than anyone in front of him, since he did not make the final round of qualifying. That means that he also has an extra set of tires for the race. And speaking of that, I wonder if some of these teams aren't intentionally failing inspection, knowing that failing inspection will give them an extra set of tires for the race, because they then won't use that set in qualifying. After all, on an older, more abrasive surface like Texas, not having run those extra qualifying sessions could give those teams an advantage. Remember that one reason why Kyle Busch flew through even some of the front runners at Fontana was because, by failing pre-qualifying inspection, he had fresher tires than those he was passing. So maybe there's something going on that NASCAR may want to check into, because with fresher tires being an advantage, and with a tire limit in the NNS, perhaps teams are giving up qualifying to get an extra set of tires for the race, as well as fresher tires at the start of the race. 19. Speaking of Jimmie, he was supposed to visit Auburn on Thursday, but had to be postponed to a later date due to the tragedy in his family earlier this week. I don't care if you hate him or love him, having a 6 time NASCAR champion visit your college campus is a pretty cool thing. "Just a random thought, but anyone who can watch a Nationwide race and think it's a good, healthy series is either delusional or on NASCAR's payroll." It IS the most successful "minor league" series in all of professional sports. I don't see my local Mobile BayBears on a well known, national TV station every week. Arena football gets some air time occasionally, but certainly not every game on a station like ESPN. I'm not saying I personally enjoy it and would certainly like to see changes, but social media and talk radio certainly makes the bellyaching over the Nationwide Series seem like a more widely held opinion than it actually is. 45. What I care about is seeing six cars maximum that have a shot to win in this series. About 15 teams that have a shot at finishing in the top 10, and beyond that it's a mess. A mishmash of unsponsored cars running 15mph slower than the leaders and S&P entries used to fund one of those unsponsored cars. Watch the ticker any given week and look at the gaps, watch to see how many laps down 20th place is before halfway. This series is in a state of disrepair that is startling and the fact that it is so popular should not be seen as a good thing. Fifteen years ago there were nearly 60 healthy, actual teams showing up to every race in this series. It had its own tracks, teams, drivers. It had an identity. It doesn't have anything now. All this series is now is waiting two hours to see if the 54 or 22 wins the race. It's very sad. 50. Since they started doing the night races in about 2005, I don't think there is a single one of them I've enjoyed. There have been notable moments like the Brad/Jimmie duel in 2012 and the wild 2010 race, but overall, night racing at Texas has usually been putrid. So I'm definitely looking way more forward to Sunday's race than I have recent Texas races since it will be in the daytime. And the NNS races have pretty much always been garbage at Texas, so I'm not surprised at all by this race here tonight being horrible. 53. Still, I hope Ryan's situation turns out more like Ricky Stenhouse instead of all the other talents Roush ruined because they started out slow. If Jack sticks with him like he did for Stenhouse, maybe he'll improve. 56. It was a novelty. When they raced at night, you felt like it was something special. Now we have about a third of the schedule either running or finishing under the lights. Kansas was added this year and New Hampshire will be in 2015. The only track that should have lights that doesn't is Talladega, IMO. New Hampshire, Kentucky, Kansas, Texas, and ESPECIALLY Darlington and Atlanta don't need to be night races. Often, Bill wouldn't really show his hand until he needed to, and that's exactly what Chase did in this one. Chase was in the top ten, but really not a threat in the first half of the race, but as the race wore on, Chase moved up, and found himself contending, and when he needed to, he showed what his car was capable of doing, blowing by Kevin Harvick and easily stretching his lead. Chase's Truck Series win last year was certainly controversial, but there was nothing controversial about this one, at least on the track. Given his inspection history (and he's already failed once this year), anything could still happen there, but congratulations to Chase Elliott. And on another note, there must have been a lot of nostalgia going through the minds of many that watched this race when Chase Elliott and Dale, Jr. were battling for the lead. Just hearing the names Elliott and Earnhardt, associated with a battle for the lead have to bring memories back to the countless battles their fathers had in the 80s and 90s, back when they helped bring NASCAR to the status it has enjoyed over much of the last 20 years. And they (Chase and Dale, Jr.) battled hard for the lead at that point, because Chase didn't roll over in any way. 102. After all, could anyone have ever thought that it would be Jimmie Johnson among the current group of veteran drivers that would be on the doorstep of winning a seventh championship? While greatness for a driver can sometimes be predicted, it's impossible to predict that any one driver will be the dominant driver for the generation to come, because there are so many potential factors involved. For instance, in the early 90s, I actually predicted that Davey Allison would surpass his father's win total, as he won 19 races by the age of 32, which at that time was almost unprecedented (at the time, drivers were winning into their late 40s and early 50s), before he was lost in a helicopter crash in the Talladega infield (Dale Earnhardt didn't get is 19th win until he was 34, for example). Catastrophic crashes, injuries, illness, and other factors can derail what seems like an all-time great career. That almost happened to both Dale, Sr. (at Pocono in 1982) and Jimmie Johnson (at Watkins Glen in 2000). And many predicted that Ryan Newman, and not Jimmie Johnson would be the best of the group of drivers coming up around 2001-'03, but it hasn't turned out that way. Remember that Newman won eight times in his second season (2003), but hasn't won more than twice in a season since. Forecasting who will be the one dominant figure that towers over all others for a generation is almost impossible. That driver for the next generation could be Chase Elliott, it could be Kyle Larson (as many are predicting now), or it could be someone that nobody's talking about, or someone that's not even in NASCAR at the present time. We just don't know, and we won't know until the next megastar arrives, and often who that is happens to be up to the hands of fate. 110. Ever since Carl gave up on running Nationwide & Ricky graduated to Cup, Roush-Fenway seems like they couldn't give one single f*** about their Nationwide program. They are the extreme opposite of Gibbs & Penske, who seem to put a bigger emphasis on the Nationwide Owners Championship than the Sprint Cup Series Championship. 111. That's why I made the analogy of Bayne as effectively being on a single-car team, and why I said that if he duplicated his season of a year ago (one win and sixth in points), it would be an accomplishment. But also, no team's more on a knife's edge, as far as performance than Roush is, and that also goes for his Cup teams. Just look at 1999-2002 for proof of this. In 1999 and 2000, his was one of the premier teams, with Jeff Burton actually challenging for the championship in 2000, winning five times, including Roush's first-ever win at Daytona (the Firecracker 400). But in 2001, Roush completely fell off the map, with both Mark Martin and Matt Kenseth having their worst seasons (though Mark was equally bad in 2011), and Jeff Burton was the only Roush driver that could compete for wins. But that flipped again in 2002, as Roush's teams were all competitive, with Mark capturing the Coca-Cola 600 and finishing second in points, Matt Kenseth being that season's winningest driver with five wins, and Kurt Busch being the hottest driver down the stretch, moving from 12th to third and compiling four wins himself. But as far as Roush's NNS team is concerned, the fact is that the cars are slow, you have a conservative driver as the lead driver (Trevor Bayne), and nothing but rookies as his teammates, so naturally they're going to struggle. I think one reason we often see Trevor running the high line is to try to get as much speed out of the car as he can, because he knows that it's slow in a straight line. He more or less admitted that in the pre-race show for this race. And with no veteran support for him for the second year in a row, anything Roush's gets done will effectively be a solo effort by Trevor and his team, because he has no help. But also, the pairing of Bayne with Jack Roush seems to be reminiscent of when Benny Parsons teamed with Bud Moore in 1981. That appeared to be a perfect match, because you had Parsons, a driver that could be trusted to finish races, teaming up with one of the sport's more solid teams, and that combo was a favorite to win the championship in 1981. But the fact was that Parsons was, like Bayne is today, a conservative driver, and Moore did not like having a conservative driver like Parsons, and even though they did win a couple of races together, Moore wanted a more aggressive driver like he had before when he had guys like Buddy Baker and Bobby Allison before he hired Parsons, so he let Parsons go when Dale Earnhardt became available. I don't pretend to know what the outcome of the partnership between Roush and Bayne is going to be, but certainly, Bayne's not being given the best chance with virtually nothing at all to lean on in the NNS garage area, and such a low number of Ford teams, compared to the Chevrolet and Toyota camp (only five of the 40 cars in this race were Fords). 116. cjs3872 posted: 04.04.2014 - 11:59 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The Long Shot, given Dylan K.'s limited experience, I think the best thing for him right now is to get experience. For him, it shouldn't matter where he runs, but rather that he's running and not having problems. If he's running around 15th, but gaining experience and not having trouble, then that's okay for him at this stage. While he has the financial backing, he does not have nearly the team behind him that Chase Elliott or Ty Dillon do, nor the year of experience in these cars that NNS teammate Kyle Larson does, so for this year, if he can run in the top 10-15 and not have trouble, then I think he's doing fine. For him, getting quality laps is more important than looking at he scoring pylon to know where he's running, or where he finishes. 117. luigistarted06 posted: 04.05.2014 - 12:09 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Awesome to see an Elliott visit victory lane in a #9. I tuned in just before the last caution, and was treated to an awesome battle between Kevin Harvick and Chase Elliott for the win, all with Kyle Busch lurking behind. Chase made a power pass on the high side with about 15 laps to go, and just checked out from there, easily pulling away from Kyle Busch, who took 2nd from a fading Harvick. Awesome race finish. That's another part of Elliott's win that gets overlooked, but it should not be, because NAPA was a loyal sponsor, and for them to leave after such a terrible act by the team they had sponsored from it's beginning, and to now find themselves back in victory lane again must feel great for NAPA, and terrible for Michael Waltrip. 120. 23andJoe posted: 04.05.2014 - 2:17 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) #31 sponsor: Rockstar/AccuDoc Solutions 121. I am saying this because of Martin Truex Jr and Brian Vickers as examples of cup drivers that had great Busch Series career before going to cup. Martin Truex Jr. actually was better than Kyle Busch as a Busch Series driver before Kyle went to cup. Truex is a solid cup driver, but he isn't what racing fans expected after he won back to back Busch series titles. People did expect a lot out of Vickers after being the 2003 Busch Series champion at a young age, but he hasn't meet expectations as a cup driver. There is cup drivers that are better better in the cup series than they were in the Nationwide series before going to cup such as Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson, Kasey Kahne and Denny Hamlin. Nobody thought Jeff Gordon was going to have a legendary career based on what he did the in the Busch Series in 1991 and 1992 when Jeff had his first cup start at Atlanta in 1992. Jeff was very raw as a stock car driver when first went to cup. Tony Stewart had the same issue as Jeff Gordon in the Busch Series. Jimmie Johnson had a couple years of ASA stock car experience before going to the Busch Series, but he didn't exactly set the world on fire as a Busch Series Driver. When Denny Hamlin was a rookie in 2006, Denny didn't set the world on fire as a Nationwide driver as a rookie in 2005 despite racing 7 times in cup in 2005. While Kasey Kahne wasn't on a great Busch Series team, Kahne actually has a better cup career than a Busch Series career. 130. Not counting guys who doubled up and won Nationwide titles after being Cup drivers like Kyle Busch, Brad Keselowski, Kevin Harvick and Clint Bowyer the last time a Nationwide champ has gone on to a pretty successful Cup career was Greg Biffle in 2002. Martin Truex, Jr. and Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. are both two time Nationwide champs but neither appear destined for Cup greatness. On the flip side, 6 time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson's career Nationwide numbers are pretty below average. Not only does he have just 1 win, but only 9 career top 5s and a average finish of 18th, well below his average of 11th in Cup. Sure he didn't have top notch equipment when he ran the series full time, but when he's returned to run Nationwide races as a Cup driver he has been less than impressive in those. I can't remember the last time Jimmie Johnson was a serious threat to win a Nationwide race. He did finish 2nd to Kurt Busch at Watkins Glen in 2011, but I think he kind of charged late to get that finish. With that said, Chase Elliott is impressing me with how good he is right of the bat. Reminds me of Kyle Busch when he jumped into the scene at 18 years old, you knew he had it right away. Other young guys like Dylan K need some time to get the hang of things, but Elliott looks ready to be a solid Cup driver now. I almost forgot Dale Jr won his first Busch race here as well. Both are sons of greats, and they teamed up with one another and won this event again. And they both used their father's famous number, like you said. NAPA is way better off with JRM than they were with MWR. JRM isn't perfect, but they at least don't have the history of scandals that MWR does. Do I think Chase Elliott is guaranteed to have a Cup career someday? Yes, and him winning this race solidifies that. He will be rushed in due to his hype and seemingly fast success, and it will be the wrong move. Somebody as young as he is needs to stay in the minor leagues for a couple years at the very least, no matter how good he does. At the young age of 18, he needs long enough to get the feel for these kinds of cars. That's why I initially had a problem with Ganassi bringing Kyle Larson into Cup this year, even if he has done better so far than I thought he would. I still think Larson could have used this extra year to prepare for Cup, then go for ROTY in 2015. Still, he might do well for the rest of this season and be able to make a good Cup career for himself. Eric makes good points in post #129. There is NO way you can determine the eventual success of Nationwide regular youngsters or guys who have had a few shots to prove themselves, and that is why I have a big problem with sponsors giving up on them after a handful of races despite results that are respectable. I also think they need to be put into a situation where they realize they need to fight and claw more. You never know where the next star could be, and I think Denny Hamlin's rookie year in Busch is a great example. He wasn't all that competitive, scoring only ONE Top 5 finish all season. When he got the chance to drive the #11 FedEx ride, I think he realized he had to fight harder than he was. Then there are guys like Brad Keselowski who fought and clawed every step of the way and only needed the equipment to start producing. 139. 23andJoe posted: 04.05.2014 - 3:43 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #131: I've always followed the policy that sponsors should reflect what's actually on the car. Since NASCAR sometimes gets things WILDLY wrong on their official sheets when it comes to sponsors. Of course, that's not as bad as ARCA, which not only consistency gets the number of caution laps wrong on their official results, but has on multiple occasional listed the wrong NUMBER OF CAUTIONS... 140. 23andJoe posted: 04.05.2014 - 3:44 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #13 owner: Gregg Mixon (same for all races this year). 141. Every #3, no matter which team is leasing it, is listed as sponsored by "Hixson Construction" (more often and not on the #2 as well, despite Tommy making big hoopla about signing sponsors and whatnot). Longtime Peterson sponsor Great Railing is almost never listed, and don't get me started on the caution info. I want this site to be as accurate as possible, to give credit to sponsors where credit should be giving. I don't care what NASCAR's records say, if it's wrong, it's wrong. 142. Six drivers start and parked in a series that is cheaper to run in than Cup, especially since there are limits on tires. Harvick started on pole and led the whole first half of the race. Around halfway more guys started to trade the lead back and forth, and the best car in my opinion won, but seriously what a bore. The Cup drivers really need to stop ruining this series. You can say that the sponsors will only sponsor the big names, and to that, I say BULLCRAP! If they really wanted to sponsor the big name drivers, they'd do it on Sunday where they get more exposure. NASCAR just continues to let this series die. Also, we all know that these major corporations sponsoring these cars are greedy, wouldn't it actually save them money to back a guy like Drew Herring or Chad Hackenbracht, since they're not as well known as guys like Kyle and Kenseth? I mean really, NASCAR needs to find a better way to fix their product, because this "pick one" crap isn't working good enough. 145.
