In other words, a really dull race by Talladega standards. I'll add a few notes of my own First, this was not Ryan Blaney's finest day. The usually steady Blaney caused two of the three major crashes, the second of which came on a REALLY dumb move that nearly took out the eventual winner. The first one was a little more understandable. The second crash of the day was caused by two things, one of which never got mentioned on the broadcast after the crash happened, but was obvious, especially in light of what happened about eight laps earlier, and that was that Brian Scott's car was all over the place at that point in the race. He nary lost it in front of the entire field, which cost him the lead, and then was having trouble keeping it straight again when Trevor Bayne did something unusual, for him. He took a chance, and it did not pay off. He tried a risky move on Scott because he knew that continuing to follow him would lead to trouble, because Scott appeared ready to lose it at any time (which Bayne felt could cause him to get run over if he stayed behind him much longer), so when the jittery car of Scott moved up the track, Bayne tried to move under him, and simply misjudged it, and started that second wreck that involved two-thirds of Roush and all of RCR. Miraculously, Bayne would recover to finish tenth (which caused me to do a double take, considering what happened to his car between that crash and the finish), while Ty Dillon also recovered to finish on the lead lap. And one of the sidebars to this race, something that was completely ignored on the broadcast during the waning laps, was the irony of Elliott Sadler threatening to win this race, given all the problems Talladega has given him over the years, including consecutive fall races in 2003 and '04 in which he suffered grinding rollover crashes, yet I don't think it was even mentioned until Sadler himself brought it up in victory lane. And Allen Bestwick called those races when Sadler had those terrifying crashes. And also, when is NASCAR going to do something about getting rid of those walls that angle back toward the track? Fortunately, Chad Boat, who hit such a wall late in the race, was uninjured, but something has got to be done about those angled walls. Will NASCAR and the tracks ever learn that you can't have walls that angle out like that? Now that we've entered May, you have to think about all those horrendous crashes at Indy when cars went into the angled wall they used to have there before it was removed after the 1973 Indianapolis 500. Not to mention all the bad crashes at Daytona in the late 70sand early 80s when cars always found a similarly angled wall at the pit entrance, as well as the crashes at other tracks, most notoriously Jeff Gordon's crash at Las Vegas in 2008. They have got to get rid of those walls that angle back toward the track. 271. 02Justin10 posted: 05.03.2014 - 9:47 pm Rate this comment: (4) (0) All I'm going to say is Joey Gase, Jimmy Means and the #52 scored an 11th place...YES!!! ^_^ And there are some awful whiners on this site too... 272. Considering Joe Nemechek is pretty much the epitome of a backmarker nowdays, it's nice to see him seemingly get an annual Top 10 at Talladega with his team. 273. The mere fact that Trevor Bayne finished tenth with all the trouble he had, which was pretty much self-inflicted, shows what can happen if you run a trouble-free race at Talladega, regardless of how far behind the top teams you are, because Talladega, more than any track n the entire circuit, has always been the ultimate equalizer when it comes to drivers, teams, and equipment. (Ryan Reed leading the first 29 laps and Chris Buescher finishing second for a dormant Roush team proves that. In fact, Bueshcer's second place finish in this race might even end up being Roush's best finish of the entire season in the NNS, as far off as his team is.) But then if you add the vast experience that Joe Nemechek has (he won the NNS championship before quite a number of the full-time drivers in the series were even born), and you can see why Joe always finds a way to finish at Talladega among the leaders. The strategy of running at the back, avoid all the mayhem that is sure to take place, and get to the finish with your car in tact, can still be very successful at Talladega. 275. No rookie will drive that car, so it can happen. Of course it's too soon to say it, but 9 of 33 races are complete and 54 won just twice. I don't think this car will win 10 or more races again, but it's very consistent. 281. startandparkfan posted: 05.04.2014 - 8:04 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) I just realized that Trevor Bayne finished 10th after crashing in the big one, then causing another caution where his left front tire came clean off, and his car was scraping against the ground. At the finish, around 1/2 of the car was duct tape. Reminds me of when Kurt Busch won the N-Wide Daytona race with a heavily damaged Phoenix racing car. What a good race that was! 282. Plus he reminded me a lot of Gomer Pyle in some of those commercials at the end of his career in the 38, one where he asks Jimmie Johnson a question and Jimmie shows him his first Cup trophy instead of talking to him. Elliott getting into the Big Brown Truck and revving it up, and Dale Jarrett simply told him "get out of my truck" and who could forget his Tylenol "Rabbit Release" Gels commercial. All kidding aside, I was happy for Elliott to win this one, he's a Virginia boy so good for the state of Virginia and deserves a win here just for both of those high flyer crashes he's had here. I echo the sentiments that I am surprised that Bestwick did not mention those two blowovers Elliott had, but he only called one in 2003, the other was in 2004 and Allen Bestwick was laid up for a hockey injury at a charity game. Allen's absence allowed Bill Weber to seize control on the booth and relegate Allen to the role of pit reporter. It still confounds me to this day, how Weber was given a job as lead announcer over Bestwick, he seemed to do okay but Weber as a pit reporter liked to push fans out who got in the line of the cameraman when he announcing or talking to drivers, the FOX guys never seemed to mind them too much. 283. jabber1990 posted: 05.04.2014 - 11:11 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) "The strategy of running at the back, avoid all the mayhem that is sure to take place, and get to the finish with your car in tact, can still be very successful at Talladega." I never understood that strategy, i'd be worried about being involved in somebody else's mess if I hung to the back because we're all doing the same thing, or worried i'd make the move too late and i'm stuck in a top 10/15/20 Finish NOBODY can predict the final 10/20 laps we always think we can but we never can, we've seen the final 20 laps clean, we've also seen them drive like homicidal maniacs for the final 10/20 laps 284. Would you rather race against 35 cars all day and risk being involved in a huge crash (or multiple big crashes), or would you rather run in the back and wait for the crashes to take place, avoid them, and only have to race against 15 or 20 cars because everyone else is in the garage area or running slowly, because they've all been in wrecks. And because the track at Talladega is so wide, you have room to make late moves, which is why that strategy doesn't work at Daytona, because the racing surface isn't very wide at Daytona. There's a reason why Jimmie Johnson used that tactic in his Chase championship runs. He wanted to stay out of trouble, get to the finish, and make his moves when it counted. And it almost always worked, because he was on the track while his rivals were in the garage with wrecked cars. For instance, most of he guys that finished up front in this one were never heard from during much of the race, but let the field thin out before making their move. Elliott Sadler and Regan Smith were really the only ones who finished near the front that challenged all day. Everyone else, including Chris Buescher, who nearly stole this one with what may end up being Roush's best NNS finish of the year (unless one of their cars wins at Daytona in July), used that tactic. Even Sam Hornish, Jr., who wound up fifth in JGR's #54 car, stayed near the back when his windshield problems forced him back there, and didn't make his presence know until the very end. But the back of the field moved up because of all the cars that were getting wrecked, so guys like Hornish didn't have to race against quite as many cars when he did decide to make his move. 286.
