Could Roush announcing that Trevor Bayne will be a full-time Cup driver next year do the same thing for his confidence that Chip Ganassi deciding to bring Jamie McMurray into the #40 car in 2002 do for his confidence, because at that time McMurray's career seemed to be going in neutral, but in the few weeks that followed, McMurray scored his first victories in both the Cup Series and Nationwide Series (then Busch Series). About nine days ago, Roush announced Bayne would be going full-time in the Cup Series, and then he does relatively well at Charlotte, improves at the 600 as the race goes along, and now has a great second place finish at Dover. The question will be how he fares on the high-speed tracks, but I think Roush has boosted Bayne's confidence, and that combined with a new chassis that Roush was supposed to debut at Charlotte, could make Bayne someone to watch for the second half of the NNS season. I still don't he's got enough for the JR Motorsports cars on the high-speed tracks because of Roush's conservative engine setups, which is why I think he ultimately will fall short of the title, but if today was an indication, he could be potent on the tracks that aren't quite as fast the rest of the season. 34. 23andJoe posted: 05.31.2014 - 4:25 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #4 sponsor: Fast Wax/Austin Hatcher Foundation #44 sponsor: Buckle Up/Click It or Ticket #52 sponsor: Jimmy means Racing #55 sponsor: SS-Green Light Racing #76 sponsor: Martins Motorsports 35. Paul posted: 05.31.2014 - 4:35 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) I was pulling for Trevor to make the winning pass on Kyle and cap off what has been a great week for him with a victory, but considering how off those Roush cars have been this season (and last season), it's hard to complain after he recorded a 2nd place finish (his best finish of the season). I'm happy that several of the underfunded teams brought home solid finishes, most notably Ryan Sieg, who finished on the lead lap in 13th place. Also, Landon Cassill made a great comeback that I don't think anybody noticed. After a top-15 qualifying effort and running inside the top-20 for the first half of the race, he made an unscheduled pit stop for a loose wheel, fell back to about 26th place, and was able to rebound and come away with a 14th place finish, the first car one lap down. Nice job by owner/drivers Joe Nemechek and Jeremy Clements as well. TriStar Motorsports almost had all three of their full distance cars finish in the top-20 before Mike Bliss lost a couple laps and positions in the closing laps (I'm not sure what happened to him, but he was off-pace at one point on TV.). I'm glad that Jeff Green did well in his first of five races in the No. 14 car this season, and I'm pleasantly surprised at how well Paulie Harraka looked out there in a 1-off race in the No. 44 car, considering how poorly he did in his Truck starts a couple years ago. Good for him. Ryan Reed really needs to get his act together and stop tearing up equipment, whether it be his or somebody else's (in the case of Cale Conley today). I think it's great that he brings a full-time sponsor to Roush Fenway Racing because it helps that team field a full-time car for the more talented Chris Buescher, despite not having a primary sponsor on the No. 60 car. But if he continues racing the way he did today, which is basically hover around 15th place and wreck himself and another car by not paying attention to the other cars around him, it could leave a big dent in Roush's pocket book and potentially cause the No. 60 team to shut down. Hopefully that won't be the case and Roush will be able to field all three cars for the entire season, but it just frustrates me to see a driver not of the caliber of a Roush car constantly tear up equipment the way he has. I'd be perfectly fine if he just finished 15th-20th every week and brought the car home in one piece. 36. Granted, the Nationwide Series isn't what it was 3-5 years ago and the competition level isn't nearly that deep, but there's more than just one legitimate competitor in the NNS. Incidentally, despite having won a Daytona 500 and two NNS races, this is Trevor Bayne's first second place finish in a major NASCAR series. He's got those wins and a number of third place finishes in the NNS, but this is the first time he's finished second in the NNS. 41. No...but to say the series is awful is throwing negative light on everybody else who shows up to compete (which without them this series would be worse off.) (And which the teams hardly get paid a dime from NASCAR.) And calling Timmy Hill a "rolling roadblock" is highly overemphasized. He always does a good job keeping his car on the bottom of the track and staying out of the way. Just look at Jeremy Clements whose truck is always on the outside lane on corner exit with faster trucks approaching. The truck series will always be my favorite NASCAR division because the drivers race hard, the races aren't marathons, and the diversity and quality of tracks. Was it a bid deal when Dale Earnhardt and Mark Martin did it?" Let's look at some actual numbers... FACT 1: Kyle Busch has run less than 15 races only once since becoming a full time Cup driver. That was his rookie year in 2005. Other than that he almost always run 20+ race person season. FACT 2: The most races Earnhardt ever ran in a sing year was 14, 3 times . The most Martin ever ran after becoming a full time cup driver was 17, in 1989. FACT 3: Kyle Busch has average of 6.1 wins per year in Nationwide since becoming a Cup rookie. FACT 4: Earnhardt had an average of 1.6 win per year in Nationwide. Martin averaged 2.2 wins per year since 1988, the year he returned full time to Cup. FACT 4: Kyle Busch has run 239 races since 2005. FACT 5: Martin and Earnhardt run 372 TOTAL Nationwide races, COMBINED. FACT 6: Since 2005, Kyle Busch has a winning percentage of 25.5% FACT 7: Earnhardt and Martin's winning percentages? Earnhardt-15.4% Marin-22.1%. The winning percentage for Earnhardt and Martin is actually is a little high, buy as you can tell from the other facts, they didn't have a tendency to show up every weekend and clean the house. Fewer starts, fewer wins, and still a lower winning percentage than Busch. So, in my opinion, the comparison between Dale Earnhardt, Mark Martin, and Kyle Busch is INVALID. 51. Schroeder51 posted: 05.31.2014 - 10:10 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) There's also the fact that back in the days when Earnhardt and Martin ran in Nationwide, the series had a much more varied schedule and drove at plenty of tracks that the Cup series didn't race at. They drove at places like Hickory, South Boston, Volusia County, Roguemont, and Myrtle Beach. It wasn't that uncommon for the Cup and Nationwide races to be run at different tracks on the same weekend. Nowadays the schedules for the two series are largely identical-there are only 6 stand-alone events, allowing drivers like Kyle Busch to run the majority of the schedule if they wish. 56. He constantly makes mistakes that he blames on the drivers around him and instantly becomes retaliatory. It was pretty clear that when he came down into Conley, he had cut the wheel after the car was already straight, and it was probably him searching for who he thought put him in the wall. Conley straight up got wrecked, while being completely innocent, by Reed losing his temper yet again, and frankly, I'm not surprised. Unless Ryan Reed can look in the mirror every once in a while, he will never progress as a driver. Harsh, but it needs to be said. 57. They've slowly transformed this into a watered down version of the Cup series by slowly but surely phasing off all stand alone tracks on the schedule in favor of having a Saturday show at the Cup tracks for money purposes. Seriously, since 2004 this series has lost Nashville, Gateway, Nazareth, Milwaukee, Pikes Peak, IRP and Memphis. Not to mention tracks like Mexico City and Montreal that had short stints on the schedule or that one of the stand alone tracks became a Cup venue in Kentucky. The only real stand alone track left in this series is Iowa and you just feel that track will have a Cup date sooner rather than later. They even run a few of the stand alone weekends at lame Cup tracks like Chicagoland and Kentucky. NASCAR's greed is leading to a watered down series. The fact that nearly every race is at the same track as the Cup race allows Cup drivers to run whenever they please and it then offers nothing new to fans. Why the hell do I want to watch a shorter version of the Cup race full of Cup drivers that are mostly unlikeable and the rest of the field filled out by slow underfunded cars that are just in the way of the few competitive cars out there. How anyone can seriously tell me with a straight face that there is nothing wrong with this series is absurd to me. NASCAR needs to give it it's own identity again, but considering the sport is run by money hungry suits who don't see they are slowly costing themselves money in the long run by watering down their product...I doubt it happens. 61. All drivers competing in the 3 major touring series can run 40 races total in any given season. Races don't carry over from year to year. That way, Kyle Busch can only feed his ego 5 times a year in lower races. Still will maintain a touch of starpower in the lower series while handing the reigns back to young guns and faltering veterans. 65. More companies wanted to sponsor cars and trucks and it was considerably cheaper to do so then. This is why cup drivers started to show up in lower series since the mid2000s - to secure sponsorship. "Race cap system, end all solution. All drivers competing in the 3 major touring series can run 40 races total in any given season." That doesn't address the problem. The problem is how to get rid of the cup drivers while retaining the sponsors they bring in. If you get rid of Kyle Busch you get rid of Monster Energy. If you get rid of Monster Energy a team gets shut down and a few dozen people are out of work. Busch had to shutdown his Nationwide team a few years ago and he knows how hard it is to tell people that they no longer have a job.
