Not sure what happened to Derrike Cope. 5. 02Justin10 posted: 06.21.2014 - 1:29 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) I'm going to give #51-Jeremy Clements a shout out here. He was 14th in practice yesterday and earns a 13th place starting position for today. If things work out for that team today, perhaps they will get a top 10 finish. I'm also keeping an eye on the #40 of Matt DiBenedetto. They appear to have a top 20 car and hopefully they will have a great result as well. 6. I am a fan of his since 2007 and I felt so sorry for him in his undoubtedly ugly rookie season. Hopefully, this'll be a great run for him. And how about my boy Jeremy Clements! After dodging chaos to earn a road course top 10 last year, he seems to have gotten the hang of this great track and starts from 13th, the 2nd best starting position he has ever had in Nationwide. Go Clements! Last, but not least. DiBenedetto is finally getting a full race. Hopefully his engine will last the distance for once. We should be in for a great race without anyone from cup. Tags finished 16th, 11th, and 8th in his first three seasons in CART. He sniffed a few wins but was mostly a non-factor and was generally outperformed by Patrick Carpentier (who himself wasn't very great). Paul Tracy replaced Tagliani and had a 7-win championship season. Yes, Cristiano da Matta went to Formula One and many of the other stars went to IRL so the 2003 field was weaker, but Tracy REALLY made Tagliani look bad. Tags drove for Sam Schmidt in IndyCar and had points finishes of 13th and 15th. Simon Pagenaud replaced him and is well on his way to his third straight top five points finish. Tags entered the Bryan Herta car that Dan Wheldon won Indy with in 2011 and finished 17th in points with a single top five finish, then was doing SIGNIFICANTLY worse last year, and Luca Filippi, J.R. Hildebrand, and Jack Hawksworth have ALL looked faster than him from late 2013 to present. Tags isn't very good... Dan Wheldon won an Indy 500 in the car Tagliani did almost nothing with. Simon Pagenaud replaced Tagliani at Schmidt and the team instantly improved from 15th place to championship contenders. I think the last two laps of this race showed exactly why that was the right decision, because a car on slick tires on a dry enough portion of the track has about a 5-7 second advantage per lap over a car on wet tires on a damp track, if not more. That's why NASCAR made that decision years ago never to qualify on a wet, or semi-wet track. That's why Alex Tagliani was able to get back up to second. Sure, he's a great road racer in a fast car. that much is obvious. But the only way you can make that kind of a move in such a short amount of time is if you have an absurd advantage on the rest of the field, and Tagliani had that with slick tires against everyone else on wet weather tires. Remember that Tagliani had to start at the rear end of the field, even behind others who pitted, because he was penalized for pitting on a closed pit road, so he went from dead last to second in two laps, simply because of the advantage he had on those last two laps. 413. Turner was having major sponsorship issues at the beginning of the year (hence why they released Jeb Burton and are currently having to run multiple drivers in the 32 instead of just Tayler Malsam like what was originally planned). They probably couldn't afford to put Buescher in the 31, whereas Kwasniewski at least has his Rock Star Energy Drink sponsor along with him. The reason I say that is that there's no love lost between RCR drivers, and in particular the Dillon brothers, for Bayne, something I think goes back to the fall race at Bristol two years ago, when Bayne confronted Austin Dillon after that race (Austin had wrecked Bayne in the late stages of that race), and certain members of the RCR team didn't take that too kindly. Then last year at Iowa, Austin dominates the race in June, only to have Bayne strong-arm it from him in the last 15 laps. That didn't go too well with RCR, as well as the old Earnhardt fans, and ever since, there has almost been a foreboding of bad things when the 3 and 6 cars got close together in the Nationwide Series, and that seems to have carried over this year to Ty Dillon. You almost expect fireworks between the 3 and 6 cars when they get close in the NNS, and whether it was with Austin last year or Ty this year, that hasn't changed one bit. And if I'm not mistaken, this is the second time something's happened this year between Ty and Trevor, with Trevor getting the bad end of it both times. And with Trevor moving to the Cup Series next year, I don't expect this to slow down any, and in fact, it might possibly accelerate with more chances for potential conflict in the longer races, because there appears to be no love lost between either one of the Dillon brothers, and possibly even Childress himself, and Bayne, and I would look out for fireworks between the 3 and 6 cars in the Cup Series next year. Just a hunch. 432. What NASCAR should have done at the end of the race was to not allow any team to switch to dry tires when it was obvious the track was quickly drying, and declare that the only kind of tires the teams could change to was the kind of tires they were already using. In effect, Tagliani gained an advantage by running out of fuel and having to stop under that caution because they could switch to dry tires. This situation is something NASCAR's going to look at, and if they're going to hold any more road races where they race in the rain, they're likely to adopt a rule requiring a tire change (one where the field isn't brought in) to be where the team has to put on the same kind of tires they take off. There's a reason why NASCAR did away with the practice they used to have where a team could choose what tire compound they could use during a race, and we saw a classic example of that today. A team could gain an obvious and unfair advantage on the field just by tire selection, and it's almost a certainty that NASCAR's never going to allow this to happen again. YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO DO WHAT YOU CAN TO GAIN AN ADVANTAGE OVER THE FIELD, CJS. THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT. It's not like I said NASCAR could should only allow certain cars to change tires. I said they should allow teams, within their own wisdom, to weigh the risks and rewards of changing tires or not changing tires and then allow them to make that decision. Some people would get it right, some wouldn't. You don't get a trophy just for participating and if you make the wrong decision you suffer the consequences. "Thems the breaks" as some people say. Why would you want to take what could be interesting strategy out of the race? That's just plain dumb. It's like saying a team shouldn't be able to attempt an on side kick because the same team would get the ball two drives in a row. 463. cjs3872 posted: 06.21.2014 - 11:00 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) 23andJoe, the odd thing was that is was a fuel mileage gamble gone wrong that put Tagliani in that position to start with. But again, a reason NASCAR effectively stopped the race was so that nobody could gain such an advantage at that point, by making them run the same tires. I'm not against teams changing tires in that situation, but what I don't like was the fact that they allowed anyone to change tire compounds at that point, and that was essentially what they were doing. To me, that's no different then when they allowed teams to change tire compounds during the race back in the 60s and early 70s. Once NASCAR saw what an advantage teams could get by making such a change during the course of a race, they outlawed that practice and made teams run the same tire compound for the duration of a race. It was obvious to everyone watching that the track was drying, and drying fast. You can't fault Tagliani's team for doing what they did, because they had nothing to lose, basically because of their own previous screw-up. The fault lies with NASCAR for allowing such a change to take place, which is why I think they're going to look at that procedure and possibly change it so that tire changes of that sort have to be done with the same compound of tires, which in this case would be rain tires to rain tires. I expect a rules change in regards to this in the not-to-distant future. For a team to capitalize from it's own screw-up makes this situation even worse. And DB1995, the whole situation with Trevor Bayne's late-race problems today is one I see getting worse unless NASCAR steps in, because I think there's a whole lot more to this than everyone's seeing. There mere fact that Bayne threatened to get even with Ty Dillon tells me he knows exactly what's going on, and that is that the Dillon brothers, and possibly even Richard Childress himself dislike him to the point where they seem to have a grudge against him, which to me, goes back to two incidents, the first of which was at Bristol in the fall of 2012 when Bayne, to his credit, had the nerve to confront Austin after the race after Austin had taken him out, and the second was when Bayne roughed up Austin to win at Iowa in June of last year. The fact that he did that to the #3 car to win a race had to be so galling to Childress that he likely hasn't forgotten it, and to do that to a black #3 car isn't doing it to just another car, but rather it's somewhat of a punch in the stomach to Childress himself, because of what the black #3 represents to him, and I think he's reminded Ty of that little moment, and they're trying to get even with Bayne, because I believe this is the second time Ty and Trevor have gotten into it late in a race this year, and Ty's been on the better end both times. And with Trevor joining the Cup ranks next year in a car that's familiar (his paint job and number for next year is virtually identical to what he has this year), we may see more of this unless NASCAR steps in and has a word with Childress, Bayne, and the Dillon brothers. Otherwise, I dread something bad will happen, but knowing NASCAR's history, they'll step in before it gets too much worse. Let's hope so for all the parties involved. But I think this bears watching in future years. 464. joey2448 posted: 06.21.2014 - 11:08 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) That's the gamble you take, cjs. If you're willing to lose all that track position and come down pit road to put on dry tires, that's your choice. Maybe it'll work out, maybe it won't. It nearly did work for Tagliani since he charged back to second, but look at Hornish and Scott. Those two didn't make up nearly as much ground as Tags did. Tagliani was just a man possessed in the final two laps, that's where his advantage came from. 465. joey2448 posted: 06.21.2014 - 11:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Also, Formula One deals with that scenario on a weekly basis. With the choice between soft and hard tires, teams can plan their strategy. Of course, all teams must use hard tires for a certain number of laps or something like that (BIARB, Onion -- help me out here with those rules), but that's why the strongest teams elect to use harder tires in the first qualifying session, in order to save their softer tires for when they really need them in Q2 and Q3. It's a gamble, and it'll always be a gamble. And that's what makes it so interesting for fans to watch... 466. cjs3872 posted: 06.21.2014 - 11:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) But then again Zack, I don't think teams should be able to capitalize from their own screw-ups either, and that's exactly what happened. They made a fuel mileage gamble (and I think a really questionable one), which was partially based on the slower lap times they were running on a wet track, but when the track got dryer and faster, everyone on that strategy was doomed, with the possible exception of Brian Scott (and I'm not sure even he would have been able to go the distance had the race stayed green the rest of the way). Had the #31 car not run out of fuel first, the #22 would have, and the others might have followed suit. Tagliani's pit crew obviously made the right choice, and he had the car to make up the lost ground. That was a genius call on their part. The fault lies with NASCAR for not having a rule preventing teams from effectively changing tire compounds with a two-lap sprint to go, and judging by what happened, I believe NASCAR's going to take a hard look at this and possibly change the rule, because no team should benefit as a result from it's own screw-up, and that's exactly what happened here. 467. Now on hold cjs, on that last caution the field DID have the option to change over to slicks, a decision Tagliani and the 22 team made when they pitted for fuel. Everybody else could have pitted and made that same choice, but didn't because 1) they were good to go on fuel and 2) they thought the track was still damp enough to use treaded tires. They were wrong, but luckily for Gaughn, Tagliani didn't have enough time to make it back to first. Let's also remember that at a track like Road America, there is also a safety factor at play that you may not necessarily have on slower speed road courses, because if one of those softer rain tires blew out on the drier pavement, it could case a horrendous crash. It's not really competitive at all. It is fun to see how the guys change their driving styles (ie: driving smart, not fast). It really separates the good drivers from the bad. If Tagliani, Hornish, Lally, etc... weren't in the race, we would just be watching people slowing down 30 seconds and sliding off the course every couple of corners. From a purely racing standpoint, it's awful. From an entertainment standpoint, however, it's pretty fun to watch. But even after that, the novelty wears off pretty quickly, at least to me. 481. Take out the Nascar BS cautions (the ones on lap 26 and 50) and this race was 90% green. 482. I predict that the #46 and maybe a couple others will probably withdraw before Friday, however. 485. Sometimes, you never know when another win is going to come, I am pretty sure Brendan felt that way and then some. A win puts a little bounce in your step. 486. I'm sick of him caught up in their mistakes. They're stupid rookies and they must be crazy. They suck. 492.
