On one hand, you have Chase Elliott, who's become one of the most feared and aggressive drivers in the Nationwide Series. And on the other hand, and I hate to say this, but in Trevor Bayne, you have a driver that others think of as a punching bag, someone against whom they think can do just about anything they want to, because they figure there's not going to be any significant reprisals. There may be a slight confrontation after the race, as was the case with Austin Dillon in the fall of 2012 at Bristol, but the other drivers believe, judging by the actions of others, that Bayne is a pushover. And now Chase Elliott has figured that out. I know this was just a situation where aerodynamics was the key culprit, but how many drivers have we seen use up Bayne over just the last two years? Heck, three drivers, Dylan K., Ty Dillon, and now Elliott have done over the last three weeks, a fact that Bayne even acknowledged tonight over the radio when he referred to being wrecked every week. The competitors know who they can take advantage of, and they know that Bayne is at the top of the list of guys they think they can take advantage of. The other drivers believe Bayne is soft, something I'm not sure I agree with, but they think he's soft, and will take advantage of believing he is soft until they are proven otherwise. 75. I say that because I'm not sure Trevor's that kind of guy, and certainly the others don't think so, otherwise seemingly half the garage area wouldn't be roughing him up like they do. They don't do that in the Cup Series when Trevor's raced there because everyone there has such a high level of respect for the Wood Brothers, and they don't want to do anything like that to such a historically prestigious (not to mention popular) car and team, but they sense that Trevor's like a punching bag, and that he won't bite back. There have been other drivers that have been pushed around by other competitors (Joey Logano certainly comes to mind), but I can't remember a single driver being pushed around by so many other competitors. I'll say this. If Carl Edwards leaves after this season (which may not be as much of a certainty as we all think) and Bayne gets paired up with Jimmy Fennig, Fennig, who's worked with guys such as Bobby Allison, Jimmy Spencer, and Kurt Busch, among others, would likely put a stop to that, because he's just the kind of guy that would make Bayne stand up to those that are trying to bully him. But for a driver to get pushed around like that three weeks in a row (each time by a rookie, no less) is something everyone else in the garage area is watching (and both the Cup and NNS garage areas), because they'll start to know that they can take advantage of him if he doesn't put a stop to it. That's what Joey Logano did when Denny Hamlin bullied him one time too many, and Logano finally put a stop to it. Nobody's messed with Logano since then. I believe that's what Bayne has to do, but is it in him? I think it is, but the others won't get the message until he shows them that he can put a stop to it. 79. As I've said before, what it needs is to go back to what it was in the 90s: a feeder series that runs on a mixture of short and "regular" tracks, not Cup Lite. A change to fuel-injected, possibly "crate", V6s wouldn't be amiss, either. Basically Trucks and Nationwide are now the same thing with different bodies, and thus the "team pool" for both is being diluted - by each other. Without one or the other changing, one or the other is going to eventually wither and die. 81. BR549 posted: 06.28.2014 - 7:26 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) cjs3872, I am a hobby racer (I race the entry level track at my NASCAR home tracks), and the first couple years I started in 2006, I was always treated as a punching bag out there, as our class made the top 3 finishers of the previous race all start in the back, so there was a lot of bumping and pushing from faster cars always coming from the back, it seemed like patience wasn't a virtue. My breaking point came one night in 2009, riding on a division leading 4 wins, I had been leading the whole race until a caution came with 5 laps to go, I had discussed with my spotter the whole race as to where I thought the #07 car (driven by a hot shot in the upper class who thought he would drop down a class and dominate) was good in the restart box, he told me he will anticipate you going as soon as you get in the box, don't go, when he sees that you don't go, he will let out of the gas, then you punch it. That was my plan, but the catch was he jumped the restart on me, I didn't wanna let a call fall into the official's hands so I took off with him and he had a car length lead by the line, I made a move and took the lead back down the backstretch, but as we went in turn three, he gave me 3 strong good bumps and went back around me as I caught the car, well we was side by side with 4 laps to go at the lap and down the backstretch I had decided that after all these years of being tried to be dumped, I was going to make a statement, he rolled into Turn Three with the lead and I nailed him on the left rear and caught him sideways, allowed him to catch it and dove to the apron in turn four to come out with the lead. There was a lot of beating and banging after the race, but that was the last time somebody tried to dump me, and up to that point, after my 4th year of racing that was the first time, I had ever wrecked into somebody, as I always had the reputation of being the most clean driver on the track, while I still raced clean for the most part (outside of another rivalry I developed in 2011), nobody ever tried the dump and run on me anymore. My point I guess I'm trying to make is that everybody has their breaking point, and Trevor will too. 82. But I'll say it again. What happened with the Nationwide Series was that in 2002, they flipped the schedule so that the Nationwide (then Busch) Series race came after the final practice session for the Cup Series race (the final Cup practice followed the support races through 2001). What that meant was that the drivers that ran the lower division race had a big advantage over those that did not run the support race. That's when you began to see the big influx for Cup teams running the lower series races WITH their Cup drivers. Roush had been doing that for years, but after the schedule change, other Cup teams, such as RCR, HMS, JGR, and eventually Penske followed suit. RCR and JGR already had teams in the lower series, but had non-Cup drivers in those cars, but realizing the jump Roush was getting on them by having their drivers get a 200-300 mile jump on them under competition conditions, they began putting their Cup drivers in their NNS cars. That's also a major reason why Jeff Gordon's dominance of the Cup Series began to erode at that particular time, when he should have been at his zenith (four championships by the age of 30). His competition was getting a big track time advantage on him under racing conditions that they didn't get before 2002. Tony Stewart's biggest season, in terms of winning races, also came before the schedule was flipped, as he won six times in 2000, his second season. But his performance began to fade slightly in 2002, even though he won the championship that tear, because he was also at a disadvantage when it came to track time. It wasn't until he started running the NNS in 2005 that he became a bigger force in the Cup Series (he won the championship that year). Many people decry the Cup stars running the NNS races, but what it's doing is giving them a substantial advantage over those that don't run the support races, and nowhere is that advantage bigger than at Kentucky. 86. CBASS posted: 06.28.2014 - 12:51 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) cjs, they ran V6s because at the time they were competitive on short tracks. When NASCAR started moving more and more races to larger tracks, the V6s started grenading on a regular basis on the big tracks. That's why they moved to V8s, not because "people didn't like them." 87. cjs3872 posted: 06.28.2014 - 2:44 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Not just that CBASS, but they were also becoming obsolete, not just in NASCAR, but also across the automotive market where fewer and fewer cars that were being sold were made with V6 engines, and that, plus what you stated regarding the Nationwide Series running on bigger tracks with greater frequency were what led to the abolition of the V6 engine in the NNS in the 90s. 88. racefangurl posted: 06.28.2014 - 3:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Maybe the rookies don't know Trevor too good yet and go by how he looks. The only time I remember him giving back what so many others have done to him was when he payed back Justin Allgaier a few years ago, in Nashville, I believe. And not only does he have that "pretty face", as you allude to, but given his backstory about how genuinely nice a person he is, his devotion to the Lord, and his health problems, he's always been a guy that others like to push around, simply because they're pretty sure he won't fight back, something that's based on his actions. And until that changes, drivers will continue to push him around, and it just isn't rookies, though it has been rookies the last three races in a row. Cup drivers have ben doing that to him for years in the NNS, but strangely, they haven't messed with him when he's driven the #21 car, something I think has to do with the high esteem everyone has for the Wood Brothers. I only recall one incident in over three years where anyone's tried to push him around when he's driven that #21 car (Kurt Busch in the Firecracker a couple of years ago when he touched off a big wreck by trying to move Bayne), but he's everyone's whipping boy when he's in that NNS car. Even Brad Keselowski wrecking him at Daytona in July of 2011 was more of a mistake than anything else. That's why if Carl Edwards leaves Roush, which I don't think is as certain as everyone thinks it is, and if Jimmy Fennig gets paired with Bayne, that's one of the first things that's liable to be touched on, because Fennig's just the kind of crew chief that will toughen up a driver, and will let the others know when he's not happy with something that's going on regarding his driver, whoever that driver happens to be. 93. NASCAR's officiating is a mockery and it changed the outcome of this race. 95. cjs3872 posted: 06.28.2014 - 8:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) How, Cornys? If a guy's speeding on pit road, it's his fault, not NASCAR's. 96. racefangurl posted: 06.29.2014 - 5:15 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) CJS, I guess I don't want him to get sick from a wreck. Kelly Sutton (Truck racer in 2003-2007, then had sponsor issues, so the story goes)told a magazine (non-NASCSR, just general) my family gets she had a bad MS attack due to a car wreck as a young woman. She was 24, my age now and she "needed help taking showers and getting into bed". Then, her dad got her a no wheels training car and she took an MS med. She was 34 when she told them about her racing with MS. It was in the February 2006 issue. They had a feature called "It's my Drive" at the time. 97. numbah10hatah posted: 06.30.2014 - 6:26 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 44 on Daytona Entry List: Kasey Kahne in the #5 Blake Koch in the #10 Darrell Wallace Jr. in the #20 Joey Logano in the #22 Robert Richardson Jr. in the #23 John Wes Townley in the #25 Scott Lagasse Jr. in the #29 David Starr in the #44 Ross Chastain in the #55 Mike Harmon in the #74 Johnny Sauter in the #80 Chad Boat remains in the #84 Bobby Gerhart in the #85 Carlos Contreras in the #87 Benny Gordon in the #91 Joe Nemechek in the #97 David Ragan in the #98 #33, #12, #86, #90, #13, #72, #89 not entered 98.
