And that tactic that Bayne uses was one used by someone else I think we all know of, and for the same reason. Richard Petty always ran the high line, something he did early in his career for two reasons. The first was that if something happened to his car, he didn't have to go as far to hit the wall, and the chances of injury were lessened to a significant degree. Also, early in Richard's career, the Plymouths he drove were horrendously down on horsepower to the Fords and the GM cars, so he used the high line to keep up on the bigger tracks the best he could. But when he finally got some HP with the hemi in 1964, he used the high line and the momentum it gave him as a weapon that was extremely difficult to beat. Also, Bayne had another of those races that figure to make him more difficult in the Cup Series, as he was a non-factor early, struggling to even stay in the top ten, but the later the race got, the better he got, and he eventually got to second place at the end because of his patience. Rarely is he ever a factor early in a race, but the later it gets in a race, the more he becomes a factor, and that's always been the way he's raced, which is why many people think he's more suited to the longer races in the Cup Series than the shorter races the Nationwide Series runs. But I disagree with what the commentators said late in the race, because they said if there had been a caution, he would have been in better position to race for the win with somewhat fresher tires. I disagree because had there been a restart, he would likely have gotten swamped because he's not known for his aggression on restarts, and he likely would have dropped him back to about fifth to eighth at the end, had there been a late caution period. 72. I really have never thought about Richard running the high line and now that i think about it that is true, i have noticed Trevor running as high as is safe to do so multiple times this year to try and make up for his disadvantages under the hood. Trevor has actually started out poorly and improved greatly in every cup race hes ran this year except the plate tracks, especially Charlotte 600 where he was just running like dog shit in like 31st and he and the wood bros never quit digging and got a 19th or 20th place finish finishing ahead of 2 Roush cars i think. 74. Donnie Wingo, who's worked with some pretty good drivers, including Geoff Bodine when they were together with Bud Moore, said a few years ago that Bayne was the best he's ever had at being able to diagnose and adjust the car's handling, and one of Bayne's NNS crew chiefs the last couple of years actually said that Bayne was giving him TOO MUCH information about what the car was doing, which I must admit is a first. But if you give Bayne an experienced, first-class crew chief in the Cup Series, given his ability to diagnose a problem with the car's handling, combined with his ability to come to the front the later the race goes, that could make for a powerful combination. As I've noted, there's a reason why Roush thinks Bayne has been the heir apparent to the #6 car, and I believe he's had that belief since 2011, which is why he didn't give Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. that number, even though he won 2 NNS titles with it. (Stenhouse's poor performances in the #17 this year and last is another reason Roush made the right decision not to put him in his flagship #6 car, even though he ran it some in 2012.) If Bayne does end up with Fennig as his crew chief if Edwards departs, which as I said some time ago is not a sure thing, and Bayne can stay healthy and Fennig sticks around being a crew chief, that's likely the combination that may get Roush back climbing toward the top, and that may be a championship-contending combination in three years, if it were to happen. Bayne never gives up and usually gets better as the race progresses. Give him a veteran crew chief, and I think that could be what gets Roush's team back among the elite in the sport, because they're nowhere near elite now. 78. 23andJoe posted: 07.20.2014 - 1:12 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) To the rear: #54, #62 (both: unapproved adjustments) 79. He's smart, a lot of people say and that's what I read about Pearson. I think anyone in the Nationwide top-6 in points other than the rookies, is at least a long shot potential champion. The rookies are Rookie of the Year contenders, and to me, that's all. It's the rule of 72 for the other 4. Within 48 points of the leader, prime contender and more than 48 up to 72's long shot. I won't believe he's out until he does. I thinks he goes by where he is in the standings and how the season's just over half way, but I can only guess." I am positive to, I know last year at Indy they had the 2nd fastest car to Kyle Busch before getting in someone elses dumbassery, and i believe they will have momentum coming in to Indy and will have a car that is equally as fast. i said last year that if Trevor had gotten that lucky break and got the lead like Brian Scott did he stood a better chance at winning than Brian did. 94. cjs3872 posted: 07.21.2014 - 1:09 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I'm not sure about that, DB1995. I actually think it would have been easier for Kyle to get by Trevor than Brian Scott, because these days, even RCR's cars are superior to what Roush is putting on the track, including in the engine department. After all, there's a reason why Roush has never won at Indy and took so long to win at Pocono, even when they were at their best. We must not forget that Childress has won there three times with three different drivers, and not always when they were at their best. I believe that Kyle would have blown right by Bayne, because the HP difference between the Gibbs and Roush cars is even greater than the difference between the Gibbs and RCR cars, and Scott had enough HP to hold Busch off for a couple of laps. Bayne would not have been able to manage even that on that particular track, because of how far down on HP the Roush cars are. 95. racefangurl posted: 07.21.2014 - 1:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Indy's hard to pass at because it's flat, but Kyle's good, though Trevor ain't bad either. It's hard to know, unless Trevor takes the lead somehow and Kyle's able second at some point while Trevor leads. Then, we'll see if Kyle can blow by him at Indy. I can't call it. I read Kyle once had to use his bumper to pass Trevor, who was 19 then at some track. Trevor can block, which is how he got his Daytona 500 win. He blocked the bottom, Edwards said. I feel he can be top-10 at Indy, if his car's good in qualifying and nothing happens out there he can't recover from. 96. cjs3872 posted: 07.21.2014 - 2:33 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @95, the difference I was pointing out was in the cars, not the drivers. Kyle's car last year had so much more horsepower than the Roush cars had that he would have blown by Trevor on the straightaway, and Bayne might not have blocked him as hard because he probably would have known that it was a lost cause. He would have tried to hold off Kyle, of course, but if it came down to it, Kyle might have passed him on the outside in the turns, his car was that much faster. And by he way. Bayne did not win the Daytona 500 because as blocked Carl Edwards on the final stretch. He won that race over Edwards because he was pulling away from Edwards. He mentioned in a radio communication earlier in that race that his car was so fast that day that it would actually pull away from cars trying to push him, and that's exactly what happened on that final stretch. 97. Let's see if he can make the 93 run as well as Yeley has made the 28 run this year. 100.
