It doesn't matter who the driver is; in my mind, nobody SHOULD be running that much of the Nationwide schedule. Sure, maybe some people wouldn't have a problem if it were Junior dominating the Nationwide Series instead of Kyle Busch, but to say that NOBODY would have a problem in that scenario (and to basically call all of us who dislike seeing Kyle/Brad/Joey dominate this series hypocrites) is asinine. 12. 23andJoe posted: 09.05.2014 - 6:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Cody Ware was not in the #86 - that was an error. And the way the site is coded it shows up on the drivers' pages as a DNQ. 18. However, I must congratulate Kyle Busch on a rarity (although it isn't the first time he's done it in the NNS), and that is the fact that he threw what is the racing equivalent of a perfect game, leading every lap. For that to happen, everything, including the timing of caution flags, has to go exactly right, and someone at the back end of the lead lap can't stay out one extra caution lap to lead, so leading every lap, NASCAR's version of a perfect game, is an incredible accomplishment, and now he has last two perfect games (or races) completed in the NNS. I railed on him after his run-in with Martin Truex, Jr. last week, for which he might have had an ulterior motive (keeping Kasey Kahne from winning the race, and thus keeping him out of the Chase, because he figures to be a much bigger factor than any of those battling for the last spots in the Chase, and causing that caution was the only way Kahne was not going to win, something that ultimately failed). But putting together a perfect race is an accomplishment, much less having the last two in the NNS. Another thing the last two races have done is sealed the fact that a JR Motorsports driver is going to win the championship this year, and more and more, that driver is starting to look like Chase Elliott, as only Regan Smith is within a full race worth of points, and even he's losing ground, albeit at a much slower pace. With a 19-point lead (nearly half a race), and with very little chance of Smith winning again, except for Kentucky, Elliott could probably even afford one clinker and still win the championship, even if Smith has a trouble-free run through the season, simply because Elliott could make up the ground he'd lose with a bad race because of the speed advantage he has on the other contenders. After all, he wouldn't fall far behind Smith with one bad race, if he fell behind at all. With Trevor Bayne appearing to be locked in sixth place (ironically, about where I thought he'd finish before the season started, and matching the number of his car), and with Elliott seemingly having a handle on Smith, the only guy he really needs to worry about right now, the battle figures to be for third place in points, and it figures to be a pretty good one between Elliott Sadler and the two RCR drivers, Ty Dillon and Brian Scott. 81. It's almost as if he takes the series' seriously, and I don't think Harvick or Keselowski or anyone else does, they're out there to have fun and maybe teach the young guns some tricks. But Kyle's out there purely to make a fool out of everyone, hopefully people start to realize how much of a bust he's being in Cup (2008 was really his only "great" year, and he slumped in the Chase), because he doesn't even have 30 wins in Cup out of 100-something in all the top 3 series'. He's basically being a 7-year-old kid teasing the other guys, "Ha-ha-haha-ha, I have better cars than you, I'm a better dri-ver" and when he wins he tries to show class but it doesn't work (SERIOUSLY, AT LEAST LOOK HAPPY WHEN YOU LEAD THE ENTIRE RACE), and when he loses he cries because it doesn't go his way. I thought he was becoming more "mature" a few years ago, at least that's what everyone said was happening. He probably still has the maturity of a 12-year-old basement dweller. I wouldn't be so disappointed about this if it was Kahne dominating, or Harvick, or even Jimmie Johnson, because they're at least happy when they win no matter what series. And if it were Kahne or Johnson they wouldn't try to win every single race in the NNS. 91. Hinch27 posted: 09.06.2014 - 7:30 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) "87. Do I understand right? I just said that drivers back then feared passing John Sears JUST AS MUCH as passing Bobby Allison. To put it in terms a person on your lower echelon can understand: it would be like drivers nowadays saying Jeff Green is just as hard to pass as Kyle Busch, but they DON'T. In other words, in the 1960s, the slower cars with the worse equipment were just as feared as the faster cars with the better equipment. If Dylan Kwasniewski or someone wrecked Chase Elliott out of the race at, say Kentucky and Regan Smith won, then it's probably Smith's redemption (he choked away a big points lead last year), with Chase Elliott second and Rookie of the Year. Anything better than Rookie of the Year and second in points to Smith or whoever's champ's pie-in-the-sky. Dylan's what I call a wreckin' rookie. He's wrecked other drivers, so why couldn't he wreck Chase. As a rookie, Chase could be like Smith last year (except Smith wasn't a rookie, but a Cup reject back in the Nationwide), in that he chokes away his points lead. He's a rookie, he's 18, so I still think he'll choke in fall. I don't believe in rookies at all. The championship standings may look a bit like this, Regan Smith, Chase Elliott (ROTY)-2 and 3-6 will be some order of Elliott Sadler, Ty Dillon, Brian Scott and Trevor Bayne. The points battle for third mentioned makes it harder to call how 3-6 will look. Chase has been -2 to his teammate before. I remember when Smith had the points lead earlier and Elliott was a close second. If Chase wins the championship, I'll never watch Nationwide when it becomes Xfinity, since my Nationwide driver moves up to the Cup. Any series that has a rookie champ's just dumbed down racing and not worth watching to me. If Regan Smith or someone's champ, I'll watch when it's of FOX next year. Mark Eddinger, another sportsmedia101guy picked Smith. In February, Mark's the editor of the site and Clayton, a writer there said of Smith "he seems like a favorite", but was reluctant to pick him, due to his team's expansion. That hasn't hurt him as he's led or been second to his teammate, except when Sadler was ahead of them for a week. Smith and his teammate were only a few points behind, though. 100. It was clear how happy Kahne was and how much he wanted it, but by being a low key guy, people never think about his reactions logically. The ideal solution, as I've mused, is to have a rule that says drivers who are running for Cup points (or, if we get rid of the choose-a-series rule, in the top 35 in Cup points) who are entered in a weekend's Cup race may not enter any other National Touring Series (Nationwide/Xfinity and Truck) events that are run at the same track on the same weekend. If a driver in the lower series is injured after qualifying a Cup driver may, with NASCAR's approval, be allowed to replace that driver for the race, but any individual Cup driver may only do this once a season. This would at a stroke eliminate the 'Buschwhacking' problem, while allowing for Cup drivers to compete in non-companion events: the one case where the 'fans come out to see the Name Drivers race!!' argument actually has any weight. Yes, the counterargument is 'But Sponsors', but if there isn't a series left TO sponsor a car in, well... 108. murb posted: 09.06.2014 - 6:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Dale Jr also won the 1998 Busch title in his rookie year. I think they weren't kids. Chase is under 21 so some would call him a kid. He's 18, in addition to being a rookie, so it's still pie-in-the-sky stuff, but Ty Dillon would be less so, if he had the points lead. If Ty was where Chase is, it would be not so pie in the sky, since he's closer to the rookie champs in age since he's 22 and they, too were in their twenties. 111. Watto posted: 09.07.2014 - 3:16 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Brian Vickers was 19 for most of his 2003 Nationwide championship, and that was his first full season. The thing that you have to consider is the competition level difference between Cup and Nationwide. It's extremely unlikely for a rookie to win a Cup championship. It's way more likely for a Nationwide rookie to win the championship when it's a talent capable of running Cup. Age is often just a number, it comes down to talent and ability. Consider the open wheel ranks and rookies doing extremely well in GP2, Indy Lights, anything you can think of. We're not talking about Cup here - Cup drivers are ineligible to compete for the Nationwide title. If you give a new driver who's *clearly* a Cup-level talent a great team, he has a chance of getting it done. It's not wise to write someone off simply for being a rookie in the Nationwide series. If Chase Elliott doesn't win the title, it won't be because of rookie-like mistakes, I'll tell you that. It'll be because Regan Smith stepped up his game in a huge way while Chase Elliott ran as he has all year, or it'll be because of mechanical failures or getting wrecked by someone else. 112. racefangurl posted: 09.07.2014 - 8:59 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) It's hard for me to believe in an 18 year old rookie. 113. Chase Elliott is clearly different from most 18 year old rookies, in a huge way. We're 25 races in with only 8 to go and he's yet to look like an 18 year old rookie. I think when it comes to analyzing someone's driving and odds at accomplishing something, you should look at his actual driving, his actual actions. I mean, the only reason I've seen you write him off is simply for being a rookie. Is there any other reason? When you say that any series with a rookie champ is dumbed down racing, I don't think you're approaching it the right way. This isn't the top level of oval racing. These things happen. If Chase Elliott wins the title, it wouldn't mean the series is dumbed down - it means that you're watching an incredible talent head somewhere. He's very clearly going to be a Cup contender. 114. racefangurl posted: 09.08.2014 - 9:57 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) What you see is what you get. I write off Chase because he's an 18 year old rookie. It almost seems to me he cut a tire once, but maybe I'm just thinking of another thing. Should he lay an egg somewhere, if it was a big enough one, in the weeks ahead, I'll laugh.
