Keep the top-15 streak going, maybe even win again. I know that win was his only top finish at the track, but if it's happened before it can happen again. He could be the best Nationwide driver, which is something that's happened this year, like Dover in June. 11. Chase qualified 11th. No momentum has been broken, he's fine, and you will be forced to gorge yourself on pie come November 15. Besides, how can you talk about Trevor winning this race a few years ago yet bash Chase when Chase is the defending track winner? Please, for our sakes, just say that you don't like Elliott and that you don't want him to win the title. It's much more of a logical reason to bash him than "he's too young to be a champion and his veteran teammate deserves it more (despite running behind Chase in points for all of the season)". 14. racefangurl posted: 11.01.2014 - 3:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) I'm a Trevor fan but not a real big Chase fan. What kind of pie will it be? Coconut cream? Lemon meringue? When there was a sixteen year old Truck race winner someone talked about coconut cream pie and Hinch likes to talk about lemon meringue. 15. He brought up the fact that the second half of the season has been all about defense, that nobody on the Nationwide side of things have stepped up to challenge him, to push him into mistakes. We saw him win multiple races in the first half because he was trying to prove himself. With 2014 all of wrapped up, does anybody come on strong enough to push Chase? Or now that he has a Championship, does he just let the reigns go on himself in 2015 and go all out? I definitely could see him winning even more races if he could just not think about points. 156. In fact, Chase Elliott doesn't even have to finish ahead of Regan Smith to lock up the NNS title. With a 48-point lead currently, if he finishes behind Smith, but close enough to him to have at least a 44-point lead going into the finale, he locks up the title, since all he'll then have to do is to start the finale. Remember that with only 40 cars starting in the Nationwide Series, the most points that can be gained in one race is 44, and Elliott has the tie-breaker over Smith, as he has three wins to Smith's one. So all he needs to do is to leave Phoenix with a 44-point lead on second place and the title is his, so Elliott could actually finish behind Smith, and still take the title at Phoenix, for all intents and purposes. The real question is, can Smith hold onto second place and make a 1-2 for JR Motorsports in the driver's championship, because Smith is far from having that locked up, at this time. Any more mistakes for Smith, and second place in points is wide open between as many as four drivers, Smith, Brian Scott, Elliott Sadler, and possibly even Ty Dillon, though he's a long shot at 27 points behind Smith. But short of an early mechanical problem or crash, or a catastrophic technical infraction bringing a huge points penalty with it, the title belongs to Elliott, and wouldn't it be ironic if he clinched it at Phoenix, where his father Bill won 25 years ago, in 1989. 158. And with only about 30 cars finishing a race, with a number of them being junk, all Elliott has to do is to stay out of the garage area in the last two races and not have a significant technical infraction, and the title is his. For instance, if Smith finishes second in each of the last two races, Elliott's minimum finishing position in each race to guarantee him the title drops three or four positions, and instead of having to finish 20th, he'll only have to finish 24th in each race to take the title. And if Smith has any trouble at all that prevents him from running up front, such as the wheel problem he suffered in this race, it's all over. And another way to look at it is this. If Elliott is the first car out at Phoenix, as unlikely as that would be, if no other reason than the start-and-parks, Smith would still have to get at least five more points to avoid being closed out, and that's no certainty. Trevor Bayne was leading this race handily at the one-quarter mark, blew a tire and crashed, resulting in a 36th place finish. If the same thing happened to Smith at Phoenix and he finished in the same position, he would be closed out mathematically, even if Elliott finished last. Smith has to gain at least five points on Elliott just to remain mathematically alive entering Homestead. If not, and if none of the others get to within 43 points of Elliott, all Chase would have to do at Homestead is to start the race, since the most points a driver can gain in a race in the Nationwide Series is 44 (remember that last place is guaranteed four points, as only 40 cars start in the Nationwide Series), and Elliott owns all the tie-breakers. And with the 3-point bump for winning not in play (because of the Cup drivers winning virtually all the races), things are much easier for Elliott than even the scenarios indicate. 161. racefangurl posted: 11.02.2014 - 2:23 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Well Chase Is basically the champ this year i have nothing against him but i don't think im a fan of an 18 year old champion either nascar is so watered down now." My 2 favorite drivers are ok, comparatively as one was 2nd among regulars in 2010, his 1st full Nationwide season and the other never ran a full Nationwide season. Martin Truex, Jr., Landon Cassill, Ryan Truex and Jeffrey Earnhardt have never run a full Nationwide season, except for Truex, Jr. and he was champ his first full Busch/Nationwide season. It was Busch when he was in it. Landon and Jeffrey are well on their way to this being their first full Nationwide season, but they don't have good cars, so I can't say they look bad when compared to Chase. He may just have a better car than Jeffrey and especially Landon, as the latter's been said to be a better driver than his equipment shows. I'd have to trade Cole Whitt and the Dillon brothers for Chase, since he makes them look bad. I'd rather keep Cole Whitt, since he's close to my age and I like a song he used as his Bristol intro. Both Dillons raced near me, won Rookie of the Year their first full Truck season and Austin has a Truck championship as well as a Nationwide championship.
