As Chase has said, a lot can happen, so they may take the fight all the way to Homestead. It depends on how it goes for the JR Motorsports drivers. They could very easily remain the top-2. The most likely scenario is JR Motorsports sweeps Rookie of the Year and champ, barring Smith having trouble, probably with a 1-2 finish. The top-6 in points are all starting in the top-12. The name lock for the top-6 could become mathematical today. 7. cjs3872 posted: 11.08.2014 - 2:43 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) And remember that all Chase Elliott really needs to is to keep Regan Smith in sight, because even if he loses four points off his lead, he'll still have a big enough point lead that all he'll have to do is to start the finale and he'll clinch the title. Since he owns all the tie-breakers, Elliott needs to only have a 44-point lead over second place, whoever that is, to lock up the title today because then all he needs to do is to start the finale. Remember that the maximum number of points that can be gained or lost in a single race in the Nationwide Series is 44, not 47, since only 40 cars start in the Nationwide Series. And with the start-and-parks, that number is really closer to 38-40, so any finish in the top ten locks up the title for Elliott, barring a post-race technical rules infraction that would take points away from him. And things are made much easier for him since the four-point bump for winning the race is not in play in the Nationwide Series, barring a real surprise that nobody sees coming. That's something Regan Smith could use, but can't get because of all the Cup participation. One interesting thing in this race is to see how Alex Bowman fares at his home track in the same equipment that Smith and Elliott are in, and could this be a push for next year, much like Regan Smith used a win at Homestead two years ago to launch serious campaigns for the championship in this series the past two years. A good run for Bowman might launch something similar. 8. racefangurl posted: 11.08.2014 - 2:57 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I'm going to a benefit dinner tonight, so I won't be online for the whole race. I have start getting ready in a bit as it's almost 3:00 in my time zone and the dinner starts at 4. I probably can jump in after the dinner, but won't be glued to our computer. I'll check on the race, though. Since we don't have ESPN at home, I'll have to rely on the Internet to see what's up. I'll follow this race and the Homestead race as I'm able to because I can't miss my Nationwide driver's finale, at least as a full-time driver in the series. 9. murb posted: 11.08.2014 - 2:59 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) It would be awesome to see Bowman become JRM/HMS's next project driver. He probably won't be able to run full time next year because it's pretty late in the season to get something together (though if a sponsor comes along, you never know), but I think running 10 or so races in the #88 car alongside Jr, Harvick, and Kahne would be great for him next year. And then once Chase moves up to Cup in 2016 (in my mind there's almost zero chance that DOESN'T happen), maybe he could take Chase's place and run full time. So hopefully something like that will happen with Bowman. Anything to get him out of BK's boxes of hell. 10. epzik8 posted: 11.08.2014 - 3:16 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I don't think this is "a race to miss", since it could decide the championship. But it also might not. 11. Eric posted: 11.08.2014 - 3:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) What happens to Bowman actually could depend on happens to Kurt Busch. I am saying that because if Kurt goes to jail, some driver is going to take his place that is going to cause a series of events to happen unless Kasey Kahne takes over the ride 2016. I bringing this up because of what the deaths of Alan Kulwicki, Davey Allison, and the near death of Ernie Irvan did in the 1993 to 1994 time period. The fact is there wouldn't be a race between after Homestead and Daytona for the cup series. That is enough time to complete an investigation in terms of what Kurt did. The fact is Stewart Haas has to hire a driver if Kurt has to go to trial during the season. 12. 23andJoe posted: 11.08.2014 - 3:28 pm Rate this comment: (4) (0) I wouldn't call Jones a "Silver Spoon" driver. He got the KBM/JGR rides after straight-up beating Kyle Busch at the Snowball Derby in his family team's car; he earned it on merit (whatever else you can say about him, Kyle does seem to have a good eye for talent) and has proven that hiring him was a wise choice indeed. ...that said with Kyle and Brad on the front row the odds of anybody else winning today are "terribly slim, Brain." 13. murb posted: 11.08.2014 - 3:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "What happens to Bowman actually could depend on happens to Kurt Busch." I was thinking about that too. Maybe Regan ends up in the #41 for a year (before Kahne takes it over in 2016 after Chase takes over the #5), while Bowman replaces Regan in the NXS ride. IF Kurt does end up getting in serious trouble over this, I could see something like that happening. But for now I'm gonna hold off on that, since there's a lot left to be played out with Kurt's deal. I just hope that in some shape or form, Bowman ends up sticking with the JRM/HMS camp. 14. murb posted: 11.08.2014 - 3:31 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) I know, Erik Jones is literally the furthest thing from a "Silver Spoon" driver. 15. I think it was unnecessary to RUN the race last night, because the lighting problems (and I wouldn't be surprised if it was a rolling blackout, something that happens out west because of the energy and power grid problems they have out there) before the race even started, and the hour-plus delay it caused, should have been a signal that it might not have been a good idea to run the race last night. Calling the race when NASCAR did was the only reasonable thing they could have done, because it could have been a couple of hours before they could have restarted that race, if they could have at all, so calling it when they did was the right thing to do. But NASCAR's decision to throw that caution near the end when Alex Bowman slowed down is still another example of the incompetency of the NASCAR officials, because they should never have thrown the caution just for a car that was slowing down, just to close up the field to provide an exciting finish, and what ended up happening is that NASCAR stole a race from Kyle Busch with incompetent officiating. Simple as that. They've had an unwritten rule for generations in IndyCar racing, especially at the Indianapolis 500, that the officials never throw a caution inside the last ten laps of the race unless it's absolutely necessary, and I can remember when NASCAR had virtually the same policy, but policy means nothing if you have officials that consistently prove they can't properly officiate a race, and the end of today's race was another case of that. But while Alex Bowman had a great run and proved that he can race with the top drivers in the sport, if given the right opportunity (his was the best car, outside the 22 and 54 cars), you somehow knew that, at some point in the race, the other shoe was going to drop on him, and something bad was going to happen. After all, he doesn't have the nickname "Bad Luck Bowman" for no reason. After all, this is the same driver that had a battery fall out at Bristol this spring because it wasn't held by tissue paper. On the other hand, remember what I stated in post #7 in this thread about how a good showing could open up other opportunities for Bowman next year, including possibly one at JR Motorsports. Anyone who watched this race today surely had to take notice on how good Bowman can be, as he outran his teammates practically all day, and you can almost guarantee that some car owner has to take notice, and if his deal at BK Racing falls through (or if they let him go), a good opportunity is almost certain to open up, because he roved that he belongs in one of the top series of NASCAR, even if it's not in the Cup Series. 142. murb posted: 11.08.2014 - 7:28 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Is Ryan Blaney gonna even have a full-time NNS ride next season?" Like I said at the start of the race, hopefully Bowman will end up sticking with the JRM/HMS camp, even if it's only a partial schedule for next year. I think he definitely proved today that he is really fast in those cars. He's already proven that he's an exceptionally smart racer. All he needs is the equipment. So hopefully they decide to keep him around next year. Also, here's a thought: Since Chase Elliott is virtually a lock for the #5 Cup car in 2016 (he'll definitely be ready by then at this rate - they'd be stupid to resign Kahne instead), that leaves Jeff Gordon's replacement up in the air. Well, if they're looking for someone to groom for that, I think Bowman would be a really smart choice. You could run him part time in NXS next year, with full time stints in 2016 and 2017 following that (basically as Chase's replacement once he moves to Cup). And then, once Gordon retires (I'll be really surprised if he doesn't retire after 2017 - that's the last year of his 3M deal, and that will be his 25th season overall), you have your very own in-house replacement ready to go for 2018. To me it seems like a great plan. So I REALLY hope something like that happens with Bowman. Fortunately, Jr and Hendrick have been pretty smart with their development drivers lately (Brad even though he wound up at Penske, Chase, etc), and surely they see the talent he has. So hopefully Bowman is next in line for them after Chase, as far as development goes. 150. racefangurl posted: 11.08.2014 - 8:11 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I was sure this would be Chokevember. I really don't mind that as much since Brad and Joey don't really run THAT many races (though I would like it if they a ran a few less - but they certainly aren't as annoying as Gibbs and Kyle with the amount of races they run). As long as Ryan is able to run full time (which, according to just about everyone in the garage, he is), that's fine with me. Besides, assuming they bring back the Greg Erwin led #12 team that Hornish almost won the 2013 title with, I think he'll absolutely have no problems running up front every week. If Hornish was able to almost win the championship with that team, then there's no doubt in my mind Ryan will win multiple races and contend hard for the championship in that car. You could not take articles written about how "rookies don't win titles" so seriously and acknowledge that today wasn't even bad. If life was predictable and everything followed a strict formula with no exceptions, what good would THAT be? A great talent won a title in a minor league series. There's nothing bad about that. Saturday's the last day I'll comment on the boards in this section. I have my farewell post to the Nationwide/Xfinity boards planned. I'll post it after the checkered flags falls on Homestead. I'll use a different name for that post, one that'll show I'm an ex-fan of the series. That's what I'll become when Nationwide 2014's over. I'm focused on Homestead now. I'll follow the race online, just to see how my favorites do. I remember DB1995 paying attention to a Nationwide race just to see how Trevor finished, so same idea as what I'll do Saturday. I won't have a strong favorite in the dumbed down series anymore, so I'm free to go. I may lurk in this section, but I'll comment only on the Cup boards and if I feel an urge, driver boards and maybe Trucks, if any are on FOX and that's all. At least for NASCAR. I watch Indy sometimes and have watched a few F1 races, so I'll comment in those section if I feel like it. 181. We've all been there; we've all had to watch our favorites lose championships to people we like less (most of us weren't happy to see Jimmie Johnson win all those Cup titles!). Hell, I'm disappointed to see Jeff Gordon get eliminated from the championship when he's been one of the best drivers in the Cup Series all year round. But you know what? It's not the end of the world. At the end of the day, life will go on, and it doesn't really matter in the long run. I KNOW you like Smith a lot; I do too. I would like to see him get a better shot at Cup one day, and in all honesty, I probably like him more than Chase Elliott myself. Does that mean I think he deserved the title over Chase? Absolutely not! Elliott had a better season than Smith, plain and simple. You can try to argue otherwise, but the numbers don't lie: Elliott won more than Smith, he had double the amount of top 5s, more top 10s, signficantly more laps led, a higher average start and finish, more lead lap finishes...The only categories Smith beat Elliott in were laps and miles completed, and that's only because Chase had trouble at the first Charlotte. If not for that, I'm positive Chase would be ahead of Regan in those categories as well. I said this on Regan's driver page and I'll say it again: just because you like a driver doesn't mean they deserve to win the championship. Fan support alone doesn't earn you championships; if that were the case, there'd be no reason to watch the Cup series because Dale Jr. would win the title every single year. You have to actually EARN your title on the track. For Regan to win the title, he would have had to consistently outperform Chase on the track and finish ahead of him virtually every week. He didn't do that, and so, he didn't win the title. That's just how it goes. Like I said, I know it has to be disappointing as a fan of Smith to see him lose the title. I'm sure Smith is disappointed as well that he couldn't win it, either. But you know...I DOUBT he's anywhere near as upset about it as you are. Again, I REALLY think you're taking this too seriously and too personally. I still find it incredibly silly that you plan to boycott this series next year simply because a young, talented rookie won the title. I don't understand WHY you think Chase winning the title is the single worst thing to happen to this series (you REALLY think a rookie champion is going to hurt this series more than the Cup drivers coming in and dominating have?). You are of course entitled to your opinion (and I realize you're probably not going to change your mind on this no matter what I say), but I just simply don't understand your point of view on this...and I don't think I ever will. 186. racefangurl posted: 11.10.2014 - 4:27 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I like a lot of drivers. 1. From that May to this year, I added the ones from Truex, Jr. down. I learned Danica Patrick's name from a magazine when I was a bit younger, but the others that weren't in NASCAR in 2000, I learned their names that year. I hadn't been able to watch NASCAR since 2000, so I knew very few names. I had learned some through magazines, as my family has gotten a magazine that covers many topics from culture, which means they sometimes mention sports figures. Some of the ones in that magazine I don't care about, though. There was a reference to Danica Patrick in a joke about the Indy 500, I was 15 or 16 I think when this was. They gave Kurt Busch a mention in a negative way in 2004, gave him thumbs down it seems. They also mentioned Jimmie Johnson and Kelly Sutton when I was in high school. They had this section called "It's my Drive" at the time and that's how these drivers got in the magazine. Spring 2011 showed me I can cry over my favorites, since I cried a little when Trevor was sick. This makes able to like drivers only if they were around in 2011. Otherwise I don't care about them because of how it is now with Trevor. Ask me about his future and I'll dump a bucket of sunshine and rainbow on your head. I believe he can a lead a normal life with MS, since he said people can and he believes he can be one. As a fan, I feel I should think positive about him because I can and I think he wants us fans to do that. 190. racefangurl posted: 11.11.2014 - 9:43 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The reason I refuse to acknowledge Chase Elliott is nobody's really that good as an 18 year old rookie. 191. The thing is that age really doesn't matter if they're someone who has been racing for a few years already. Chase Elliott did a lot of late model racing as a teenager. He adjusted to Nationwide quicker than people expected, but it wasn't a surprise that he would adjust. Rookies aren't always that good, and it doesn't matter their age. Some rookies, however, stand out from the rest. Age is completely irrelevant. Chase Elliott didn't start racing late models at 17. He's been racing for most of his life. 200. racefangurl posted: 11.11.2014 - 5:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Is Chase Elliott another Joey Logano, in a sense? That's why it's so watered down, or dumbed down in your words. The Cup regulars are crushing the competition, and the small shoe-string budget operations are barely treading water. And all the hidden talents are unable to prove that they can win races and be competitive because the powerhouse teams continue to keep running Cup guys, and aren't giving the up-and-comers a chance to prove themselves in good equipment. 203. racefangurl posted: 11.12.2014 - 9:09 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Someone said it's the sponsors. Sponsors the powerhouse teams get want Cup drivers over the new guys. Maybe they should find more local sponsors was an idea that came up in that discussion. Elliott Sadler and Regan Smith were Cup drivers and are sponsored. Austin Dillon was sponsored as a regular, but he ran in some Cup races. Trevor Bayne was fully sponsored this year and he's had that part-time Cup ride with the Wood Brothers. I know he's been the Nationwide best at times, like Dover where he was 2nd to Kyle Busch. I remember other times he was top-5 with just Cup drivers ahead of him. Chase Elliott's an exception, since he's been strictly Nationwide this year and has NAPA sponsorship. Maybe it's because he's Bill Elliott's kid. And yesterday I decided to feel happy a rare talent won the title because as I said what Watto said about Joey Logano showed me rookies can be that good.
