It's a walkover by any means though as defending champ Chase Elliott, Ty Dillon, and Regan Smith all come into this race with their title hopes still alive. Even without the Chase we've got a four-way fight for the crown albeit one that looks a little weighted in Buescher's favorite. Garrett Smithley makes his Busch/Xfinity series debut. 3. The 2014 champ is moving up to Sprint Cup next year to replace Jeff Gordon in the famous #24 Chevy. This is also his teammate Regan Smith's last race for JR Motorsports. 5. RaceFanX posted: 11.21.2015 - 12:50 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Penske Racing didn't decide until the week of this race that Ryan Blaney would drive the #22 Ford here at Homestead. The team waited until after last week's Cup race at Phoenix to see if either of its Cup racers Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski would make the Chase. The plan was that if the team had a driver in the Chase that driver could then choose to run this race for extra prep or skip it to focus on the Cup race at their leisure. Ultimately both Logano and Keselowski missed the Chase. It's a big week for Blaney as it was announced this week he'll run in Cup full-time in 2016 with the Wood Brothers returning to racing full-time. 6. Larson and Rowdy are gonna lap the field pretty soon, which in the old days would have assured one of them victory. Chris has had a good year but when you crunch the numbers Chase Ty, and Regan have been better. The only reason why none of those three are leading the points is because they have had things happen to them like parts failures tires going down or just being involved in wrecks not of their own doing where Buescher hasn't. I'm not saying Chris isn't deserving of the title, he clearly is, but I just think this would be a championship where the best driver isn't the one who wins and more importantly I don't think the people running NASCAR like it when people win the title like it looks like Chris is about to. 69. The negative: NASCAR's officiating went from being a joke to just depressing at this point. Cars were bouncing off the turn walls and riding the walls all afternoon. I have no idea why they threw the caution for the #40 rubbing the wall and the #44 bouncing off the wall. While 5-6 cars on the lead lap may not be exciting, at least it was honest and historical. All of that was thrown out the window with these questionable calls. Add to that Kyle Busch's tire violation. Wouldn't you be curious why NASCAR gave Busch, the leader at the time, a penalty? I was. But NBC didn't bother to show a replay. I'm happy the right person won the race and I'm happy that NASCAR's random cautions didn't alter the outcome of the championship, but I'm honestly left feeling really disappointed. 207. cjs3872 posted: 11.21.2015 - 5:31 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) Congrats to both Kyle Larson and Chris Buescher on their various triumphs today. Larson on the race win that he nearly threw away with a bad restart and Buescher on his championship, joining cousin James (2012 Truck Series) as a NASCAR champion. However, what transpired during the second half of the race is precisely why I hate the wave-around, and wish NASCAR could do something to get rid of it. At the 100 lap mark, Larson had put all but three other cars down one lap, and as I had predicted in post #50, the number of cars that finished on the lead lap was in double digits (11), and might have been in the mid-to-high teens if not for Erik Jones staying out a few extra laps on that rain caution, all because of the wave-around. His staying out prevented a large number of cars from getting the wave-around on that caution, though a few did when he pitted late, and then a caution or two later, practically the ENTIRE field, except for a car or two, took a wave-around and got a lap back. The wave-around basically undoes a dominant run by a leader because it allows huge amounts of cars to gain laps back. Nearly 25 cars gained laps on that one caution by not pitting. This race again proves what a joke the wave-around is. I have no problem with the Lucky Dog, or free pass, because at least that usually has to be earned by being the highest scored car not on the lead lap, but the wave-around is a joke because laps get made up by doing nothing but staying on the track during a caution when the leaders pit. 25 cars gaining a lap by not pitting under caution? That's utterly ridiculous, and it nearly happened twice today. 208. Lucstar88 posted: 11.21.2015 - 5:34 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) Chase in a interview about being 2nd. The wave around is needed to make sure slow cars don't hold up the leaders on restart and cause wrecks. The only joke here is NASCAR themselves. If they didn't throw a freaking yellow for a car brushing the wall (something that had been happening all race) there wouldn't have been so many chance for teams to take the wave around. The problem lies with the people running the race, not the rule. 213. I agree with that. They simply shouldn't be allowed to gain laps on the field that way. And this isn't just a NASCAR problem, because I remember a team gaining 10-12 laps on wave-arounds in the 24 Hours of Daytona not too many years ago. Having 25 cars gain a lap by not pitting is ridiculous, and if they simply have to line them up without letting them get laps back, then that's something I don't entirely have a problem with. And as for the officiating, while I've had problems with that in recent years, I had no problem with it today, as it concerns cautions that tighten up the field. What happened on that first one (when the #40 car bounced off the wall) would have happened anyway because a caution was later brought out for rain. And while another was thrown out for a car hitting the wall later on, can we be sure that cars weren't slipping and sliding on a somewhat questionable track after the rain caution? NASCAR's always in a tough spot when it comes to the decision on whether or not to throw a caution when a car hits the wall, because they can't be sure if any debris has been shaken off the car and onto the track. And if there's any question, they should throw the caution flag, because if there's debris on the track that's undetected, it could cause an even bigger problem. 225. Nothing against him, I always liked him (too bad Roush will probably ruin his career) and he did what he had to do, but his title just shows something is seriously wrong with the Xfinity series. Having a champion with only a 60% top10 rate (even went 5 races in the row outside the top 10 mid-season), in a series where only 15 cars or so have a legitimate shot for a top 10 finish at the start of every race, that is not normal. Obviously Cup drivers running Xfinity is part of the problem, and that 1 place=1pt point system is too. Have a average/poor day running slower than your title opponents, you'll lose 5pts. Have a DNF because of something (crash, mechanical...) you'll lose 25/30 pts... Yeley. He did nothing at JGR during a time when Tony Stewart was competing for championships, and even Denny Hamlin was winning races. David Ragan was certainly not the caliber of his teammates when he was at Roush, but given who he followed in the #6 car, his problems could almost be predicted, which is why Chase Elliott may not have the immediate success many think he'll have in the #24 car. And while Speed and Stremme were never that good to begin with, Sorenson was in an almost impossible situation, given that Ganassi's team was just a shell of what it had been just a few years before Sorenson's arrival there. I actually think he was a little better than he showed when he drove the #41 car for Chip. And of course, we all know what a big disaster Danica's been, but that could have been predicted, because when she was sharing her ride with another driver in what's now the XFinity Series, that other driver almost always ran better. Now in the cases of Stenhouse and Bayne, I wouldn't call them "busts" quite yet. First, both race for Roush Racing, which is an absolute disaster in the Cup Series, something I don't think will improve any time soon, mainly because they're down quite a few HP to the other top Ford teams due to how conservative they run their engines, much less the Chevrolet teams and JGR's Toyotas. Their best runs the last two years have been on the restrictor plate tracks and short tracks, where horsepower is unimportant, and they've even struggled there this year. And in Bayne's case, there's also the health issue of having MS and how it affects his ability to race at the highest level, and I think it has affected him for the last couple of years, to some degree. As for Stenhouse, he's actually been Roush's fastest driver more often than not in the latter part of the season in the Cup Series, and I think if he raced for a different team, he'd run closer to the top ten, given he's now got three years of Cup experience. The fact that Roush's Cup drivers no longer race in the support series also works against them, because when they ran well in the 90s and 2000s, it was always because they outhandled everyone, not because they had more speed than everyone. Though it's not likely to ever happen, it would be interesting to see how someone like Josh Wise or Landon Cassill would do in a good car, because except for when Wise shared the #7 NXS car with Danica (and always ran better in that car than she did), they've never been in a good car. 236. Greg Biffle, though certainly near the end of the line in the Cup Series, has won nearly 20 times in the Cup Series and nearly won the 600 this year, yet even he can't run in the top 20 on a consistent basis. Certainly they're behind on the chassis, which is why they're in the low-to-mid 20s, instead of at least sniffing the top 10, but they've been one of the most conservative teams for many years when it comes to engine setups. That has cost them at least four or five championships with various drivers from Mark Martin to Carl Edwards over the years. I really believe that goes back to what happened in 1997, when they were as aggressive a team as it got where engines were concerned, though they were still down on HP to teams like Penske, Yates, and Hendrick, and at California, Mark Martin ran out of fuel TWICE in the last ten laps of that race, and ever since then, they've made a concentrated effort on fuel mileage, and they've been one of the best teams in NASCAR for years when it came to getting good fuel mileage, at the expense of making the big horsepower, which is why they've always had trouble on the tracks of 2 miles or longer in length, except for Michigan, where they're more aggressive on their engine setups than they are almost everywhere else. And of course, one of Chris Buescher's two wins this season on his way to the NXS championship was a fuel mileage race (Dover), and Greg Biffle almost stole the fall Cup race at Talladega on fuel mileage. There's no question horsepower isn't Roush's only problem, because their cars don't handle that well, even in comparison to the other teams running where they usually do in the field, much less in comparison to the leaders. One thing I think Ford may need to contemplate doing is having the teams share inforation, since Penske runs his stuff, as do Roush, and now even Richard Petty's team runs their own stuff, as of 2015. One thing I do think may help the Ford teams across the board is having the Wood Brothers run full-time in 2016, because that's one more Ford car and team to bounce ideas off of. And while the Woods are currently aligned with Penske, they'll almost certainly give a little assistance to Roush's and Richard Petty's teams, and vice versa, given their history with Roush, and of course, nothing needs to be said about their history with the Pettys over the decades, both as rivals and friends. In fact, if the Woods and the Richard Petty's team formed an alliance, it would not surprise me one bit. The problem where information sharing among the Ford teams is concerned is that Penske is not going to share information with any of the other Ford teams, which is something that goes back to that organization's beginnings in the late 1960s. After all, Roger Penske's first big-name driver, Mark Donohue, literally wrote the book on getting the unfair advantage in racing, and as long as Penske has that philosophy, the other Ford teams are going to continue to struggle, even if they all align with each other. Remember that the last time Roush struggled like this, they did not correct the problem by themselves, but instead they had help from Richard Petty Motorsports when Kasey Kahne and Kenny Francis shared what they were doing in 2010, and not long after that, Roush had a major resurgence from late-2010 through 2012. 253. They'd be at least competing for top ten runs if their cars handled better, but Ford has been at somewhat of a disadvantage in that department for a few years now. Even the Penske team has had their share of problems where the handling of the cars is concerned this year, especially the #2 team of Brad Keselowski, which has only the one win at Auto Club Speedway, and they were fortunate to even get that, since Brad Keselowski's win was set up by a somewhat questionable late caution period. If not for the performance of Joey Logano since late August (5 wins), 2015 would have been a total disaster for Ford. And with the decline of Roush over the last three years and the retooling of Richard Petty's team this year, there's virtually no depth at Ford right now, which is why having the Wood Brothers return to full-time status may be a shot in the arm for Ford going forward. As a matter of fact, a couple of years ago, I mentioned that Ford was going to be in trouble going forward because Roush was fading even then, and there was no other team than Penske that was competitive running the blue oval, and unfortunately, that's come home to roost. And I fear that Toyota may soon run into the same problem with only one good team running Toyotas, Joe Gibbs Racing. If they begin to struggle next year because of not having another team to bounce ideas off of, they could be on a slippery slope like Ford has been for the last three years. I think Penske's struggles this year is a direct result of not having another good team to bounce ideas off of. They need Roush to return to their old form, but unfortunately, I don't see that happening any time soon, because their cars are not very good, their drivers are somewhat questionable, and they run their engines more conservatively than the other big teams do, and that's a REALLY bad combination. 260. murb posted: 11.22.2015 - 3:37 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) "And I fear that Toyota may soon run into the same problem with only one good team running Toyotas, Joe Gibbs Racing. Remember that at that time, it looked like MWR was going to be one of the power brokers for many years to come, as Clint Bowyer was able to finish runner-up in the championship behind only Brad Keselowski, but then the organization collapsed, "SpinGate" happened, and they're going out of business as of tomorrow. One of the interesting things about the whole thing regarding Furniture Row is that, unlike the other manufacturers, Toyota's racing arm is based in California, which doesn't really put them that far from where Furniture Row Racing is based in Denver. The first thing Furniture Row Racing has to do is expand, which they plan to do in the next couple of years, because they can't stay a single-car team and be competitive for too much longer. Sure, they've gotten a lot of help from Richard Childress Racing, which has helped get them to the point where they might win the Sprint Cup, but the question there is, how will Furniture Row Racing do with Toyota, and how quickly will they expand? If they can do what Michael Waltrip Racing did from 2010-2012, they and Toyota will be just fine, but if it doesn't work, then Toyota will be right where it is now, and I don't think a manufacturer can be fully competitive with just one good team, regardless of how good that team is, nor can a team continue to be as good as JGR is being the only good team representing a manufacturer, in this case Toyota. I think this is something that bears watching over the next 2-3 years. 265. RFG posted: 11.22.2015 - 3:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 259, I think RPM and Wood Brothers are both Penske allies. Roush? Not sure if they have any alliances, other than the one Front Row has with them. I know Penske uses Roush Yates engines and so do all the other Ford teams. When the Wood Brothers were still in their alliance with Roush and had Trevor as their driver, he improved between 2011 and 2012, but regressed after that. That's enough to tell me Roush equipment probably fell off after 2012 because the Wood Brothers had Roush cars. Why is Roush so much better in the Xfinity series? It seems like they have handling problems in the Cup more than Xfinity. 266. murb posted: 11.22.2015 - 4:17 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "The first thing Furniture Row Racing has to do is expand" They've apparently got a second car planned for 2017, and then they are gonna try to follow that up with a third by 2020. Assuming all the sponsorship stuff comes to fruition, I think that's a great plan, and I think it was a great move for JGR to hook up with them. They'll be more than fine if it all works out. 267. These are all the confirmed full-timers: 3- T Dillon 33 - B Jones 62 - Gaughan 1 - Sadler 7 - Allgaier 6 - Wallace Jr 16 - Reed 19 - Suarez 20 - Jones That's 9 rides capable of contending on a regular basis. Meaning 3 mid-packers will be competing for a championship over the final 7 or so races(with the proposed 12 car chase). Options for those spots consist of... 42 Poole (let's be honest, HScott stuff isn't that good) 39 Sieg 28 D Armstrong 01 Cassill 4 Chastain 51 Clements 07 RBJ 44 Starr 8 Koch 1-3 other TriStar cars Possibly the 43 or 98, if either were to be full-time, they'd easily qualify for the chase Looking bleak indeed 272.
