The team has swept the top three spots in qualifying in half of the 20 races this year, including this weekend's Watkins Glen event, and has come close to a sweep in several others. 2. Sean posted: 08.06.2016 - 12:45 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) According to driverdb, another site that includes more detail on international race winners than this site does (although much less detailed results), Habul has never won a race in any of the Australian series he competed in...1 podium finish and that's it, so no, he may be a road course ringer but he isn't a good one. Obviously there is no interesting road racing talent in the field if even Trevor Bayne can be faster than basically all the non-Cup drivers... The quality of road course ringers has plummeted over the last decade. I would say Scott Heckert is the most interesting one-off because he was competitive for the K&N East title last year, losing to Byron by only 15 points and beating Abreu and Haley by quite a lot. 13. I suspect any of these could match the previous generation's competitiveness... I'd at least expect Colin Braun given his greatness in sports car racing in the Prototype Challenge class and past NASCAR experience to be a regular road course ringer, but for some reason he is not (yeah, I know many of these drivers would be out for this weekend, because IMSA is racing at Road America the same day as the Cup race at Watkins Glen.) They are much better sports/touring car drivers at this point than the likes of AGING Fellows, Said, and Pruett (who were probably better road racers at their peak (although I'm not so sure about Said who I find very overrated), but aren't at their peak anymore...) 16. Saw some replays of the big pile-up they're under the red flag for currently. The esses are pretty much the WORST place to have an accident occur at Watkins Glen, especially right after a restart. So narrow through there that if somebody goes around they're almost guaranteed to take about 10 cars with them. Makes me think the Cup race tomorrow could be a crazy race as well (since they are dealing with new pavement). Although it's always a refreshing sight to see Kyle Busch knocked out of an Xfinity race! I'm sure Mannoroth's heart is bleeding right now seeing him out of the race, but really...how many people are actually sad to see him get taken out in a crash? He dominates this series SO much in his superior equipment that it's always nice to see him get knocked down to earth every once in a while. 54. To add to what you said he's the same guy left Texas early in 07 which was probably one of the factors into him loosing his ride at HMS. An Xfinity regular is best, though. 119. Mannoroth posted: 08.07.2016 - 12:23 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) 53. You're wrong. My heart isn't bleeding at all... You're pretty much the one guy here who actually finds his lower series wins impressive, anyways... You're also the guy who actually once used the "YOU'RE JUST JEALOUS" argument to try to defend Kyle running in the lower series...in my books breaking out a "YOU'RE JUST JEALOUS" in an argument is a self-defensive tactic that indicates you take criticism of your opinion as a personal attack and pretty much negates whatever point you were trying to make. That's just how I see it... You genuinely get enjoyment out of seeing one of the two/three most naturally talented (I will always give him that, but he has a WAYS to go to win me over from a personality standpoint) drivers in the Cup series make the lower series his bitch week after week by dominating the hell out of low/no budget equipment in just about the most vastly superior equipment possible? Fine and dandy, go ahead. Be my guest, no skin off my bones. Just remember that here you are all but alone in that opinion; there is a good reason why many people tend to avoid the races with him in it, because of the obvious foregone conclusion. Why am I even bothering in engaging you, you probably wanted a comment like this from me and probably just laughing your ass off at me. I don't know why I even bother sometimes... 121. Pearson only ran Busch Series races in the 1982 and 1983, for a combined 6 races; in those same years, he ran a combined 16 Cup races. And in those days, the Busch Series was a separate professional series for cars of a completely different spec. Complaining about Pearson running Busch races in 1982 would be like complaining about an F1 driver running WEC in 2016. 123. If Busch was dominating cup like petty and Pearson dominated cup no one would be saying a word. That's where he should be racing. Not in a minor league feeder system against has beens (cope shepherd bodine) and new comers (Poole sieg koch etc). I mean think about it. Busch is the REIGNING cup champ. He's won 4 times in cup this season. For what reason does he need to dismantle the competition in xfinity each week in OBVIOUSLY superior equipment. Ego? It's got to be because very few are actually impressed with his inflated win total. The only wins that will ever mean jack to real racing fans will be his cup wins. And maybe those Busch and truck wins when he was what this series is intended for. A newcomer looking for experience and the chance to break through to cup. And just to be clear it's not just a Busch problem. Keselowski is also a former cup champ and logano is a cup contender. They don't need the extra track time that comes with xfinity. It's out of control. Penske hasn't raced a non cup driver all season. Even going as far as to have Austin Theriault practice the car all weekend only to fly in keselowski from half the country away right before the event. And yes I know that's what sponsors what but what's the point. Though here's a thought: Dale Earnhardt, Terry Labonte, Geoff Bodine, Bill Elliott, and Kevin Harvick (for a spell, so exception) all drove, partially or almost exclusively, for themselves in the Busch Series when Buschwhacking. Back in the 1990s, whenever the Busch Series came to Watkins Glen, Terry Labonte dominated. He won three straight races. The catch, however, was that... 1. They were stand-alone races. 2. He drove his own car for his own team 3. He ran a very limited number of races... 4. ...on weekends that, like those, were off-weeks for the Cup Series. It wasn't like it was today where Cup teams run team cars with the team's Cup drivers every week in the series. Back then, Cup drivers (this was before the 'Buschwhacking' term had even been coined, because then it wasn't a problem) ran Busch for two reasons: one, to build their own teams, and-or two, because they were racers looking for a race to run in and it was fun for them. The exception to points 1 and 2 (or at least 1 anyway) was of course Mark Martin, who drove a Roush house car and regularly stomped the field. The thing was, he was the only one doing that, and it wasn't so that they could use the Busch race as a cup test session, but flat-out to win(n-Dixie. Heyo!). So everyone was fine with it, and 'I beat Mark Martin' actually WAS a badge of honor for Busch Series drivers. Things started to change about 1997 when Roush started entering a second 'house car' for Jeff Burton, the old Track Gear #9.* But it didn't take off and become 'Buschwhacking proper' until NASCAR shuffled the Saturday schedule, eliminating second round qualifying and moving Happy Hour before the Busch race instead of after. This led to the land rush to field "house teams" in Busch by Cup teams because suddenly the Busch race had become the 'last chance practice session' for Sunday's race. Some cost saving that provided... * An intereting footnote to the old Roush #9 Busch team was the 1998 race at Watkins Glen, where Ashton Lewis' team used the number (and, I recall, one of the actual cars that had had all its sponsor decals peeled off) because it let him have an owners-points fallback for provisionals - one that, as it happened, he actually used, starting 42nd (and finishing 3rd!). That sort of thing was done a lot in that time-frame and results in some extremely confusing and frustrating tangles for statisticians trying to figure out nowadays who actually owned some of the cars... 136.
