Yikes! 7. joey2448 posted: 08.27.2016 - 7:44 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) A quartet of road course experts up front. Nice. Tagliani, Marks and Kelly are almost exclusively road-course drivers, while McDowell has proven to be stout on the twisty tracks in the past. Once again, super qualifier Erik Jones struggles (by his standards) on a road course. Jones' worst three qualifying spots have come on road courses this year. 13th (Watkins Glen), sixth (Mid-Ohio) and now 10th (Road America). Other than those three, every other start by Jones has been a top-5. James Davison, cousin to V8 Supercars (or whatever it's called now) racer Will Davison, makes his NASCAR debut with an 18th-place qualifying effort. As pretty as she may be, Paige Decker was over 33 seconds slower than the pole time. Yikes. Alon Day, the Israeli driver who was fast in the rain at Mid-Ohio, will start last on Saturday after brake issues and a flat tire sent the No. 13 Dodge into the gravel in the first round of qualifying. 8. I don't live by myself and we share the computer, so someone else may want it then. That, or we may not be home since we have stuff to do. However, this race is more how it should be (see 3 and 5). Michael McDowell isn't a usual suspect to beat up the Xfinity drivers, so he's better than Brad Keselowski, Kyle Busch, Joey Logano, Paul Menard or even somebody like Ryan Blaney or Chase Elliott. He's kind of a nobody. 16. racefangurl posted: 08.27.2016 - 11:08 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) *may or may not 17. Tagliani, Marks and Kelly are almost exclusively road-course drivers" In the years Tagliani was full-time in IndyCar, and several of the latter Champ Car years, he was pretty much the worst driver who was not a ride-buyer and he maintained this fairly consistently. He was okay from 2000-2004, but still at best mediocre, but after that, he hardly impressed at all. Also, he was no faster or slower on ovals than he was on road courses in Champ Car or IndyCar. This still doesn't justify whichever announcer it was a few weeks ago who hyped him as the "best road racer in the world", when he has only won one professional race (sorry, I don't think Canadian Tire or Canadian touring cars really count) in the last 15 years. Given the strength of the #22 and the fact that he does have a lot more NASCAR experience given his starts in Canadian Tire than most other ringers, he could definitely win, but it won't really change my impression of him. Owen Kelly has not won a race since 2007 although I do take the V8 Supercars development series more seriously than I do the Canadian stock/touring car series. Justin Marks in my opinion IS a better road racer than either, and even though he doesn't have much in the way of results, so is James Davison. He has had blistering speed in sports cars in GT cars for questionable teams, but because the teams did have unreliable equipment, he didn't usually get results. Whoever is hiring for the #90 really knows their stuff if they're going for Lally and Davison, who have better respect with people in the know than a lot of the more overhyped IndyCar drivers we have gotten (Tagliani - who was always mediocre, Hornish - who never won a professional race on a road course, Allmendinger - who is the second most overrated IndyCar driver of the last 15 years) or people who used to be good 20 years ago but no longer are (Said, Papis, Fellows.) I could name about 20 other drivers who could potentially wax this field, and it's sad that you can actually make a case that Tagliani is one of the best drivers. Tagliani is not going to win though. He always finds a way to lose. "Why do you say Michael McDowell is a nobody? He's still a Sprint Cup series driver and has over 200 career starts in cup. What does it take for a person to be a somebody then?" Being competitive is what it would take. Yes, I realize he has had generally awful equipment for most of that time, but given what he has done in the races when he was not (filling in for Kyle Busch in the #18 when he was suspended and running several laps off the pace) I don't believe he would be anything resembling a Cup winner. He's another guy who does have good road racing ability relative to most of this field, but he never lived up to his minor league potential as a World Karting Association champion and has only won one professional race in Grand-Am in 2005 (I don't think ARCA or Star Mazda REALLY count, although it is interesting that he did dominate that ARCA season...) There have been a number of drivers with 200 starts who have been nobodies in the past (Rick Wilson! Chad Little!) and being competitive is what really matters. And no, I do not really think McDowell would have stats any better than Wilson or Little even if he had better equipment... 19. He's constantly taking people out, despite now being a stock car driver for almost ten years and running a LOT of these stock car road races (off the top of my head: he started that huge 2008 Watkins Glen Cup big one, he wrecked Bobby Labonte hard at Sonoma in I think 2011, he wrecked Hornish once at one of the NXS road races when Hornish was running for the championship, he wrecked himself and others on a late restart at one of the first Road America races after dominating all day, and now he just wrecked Tagliani after trying twice earlier to crash him - again, not a Tagliani fan and it's not like Tagliani hasn't been reckless over the years either). And yeah, McDowell is a poor oval racer, in Nascar at least (I know he did win on some ovals in ARCA, but even those were in Eddie Sharpe's cars which Scott Speed also looked amazing in). 33rd and three laps down (with no incidents if I recall correctly) in the JGR #18 at Texas subbing for Kyle Busch pretty much sums that up. 87. He's constantly taking people out, despite now being a stock car driver for almost ten years and running a LOT of these stock car road races (off the top of my head: he started that huge 2008 Watkins Glen Cup big one, he wrecked Bobby Labonte hard at Sonoma in I think 2011, he wrecked Hornish once at one of the NXS road races when Hornish was running for the championship, he wrecked himself and others on a late restart at one of the first Road America races after dominating all day, and now he just wrecked Tagliani after trying twice earlier to crash him - again, not a Tagliani fan and it's not like Tagliani hasn't been reckless over the years either)." Tagliani took himself out of contention multiple times, McDowell avoided overdriving the car and earned the win. Thinking back to his days driving for Brian Keselowski, it's good to see him succeed. Bummed out for a lot of other drivers though. Road courses have been disastrous for the #51 team. This might have put their Chase hopes in Jeopardy. Ross Chastain looks to be in jeopardy too. Alon Day was up and down all day and was probably involved in a last lap accident like 12 other drivers. Honestly, the only plus for the underdogs was J.J Yeley getting his first top 10 of the season. 142. murb posted: 08.27.2016 - 6:05 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "I would much rather see McDowell in an RCR Xfinity car than an also-ran in cup." As much as I've trashed him today, I actually agree. I still don't think he's a good oval driver, but in an RCR car I think he could be fairly respectable running the full season. Still would rather have Hornish between the two of them though (and would MUCH rather see a younger guy get a shot over either of them)... 143. Ty posted: 08.27.2016 - 7:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Like the others, I wouldn't mind seeing McDowell in the #2 next year for RCR's Xfinity team, but I fully believe Hornish would be better suited for that ride.. He's shown he can win on ovals and compete on the road courses. I don't think he's a good Cup guy (as evidenced by last year) but be like a Ted Musgrave/Bobby Hamilton/Johnny Benson/Todd Bodine-type and wash out in Cup before heading to a lower tier series and win races and championships. There's no doubt in my mind that if, given a ride like RCR/JGR in Xfnity/CWTS, he can win races and championships. 144. Hornish is certainly talented enough to be there as a full-time Xfinity guy, but I think the five I listed would all be more deserving. I would be very disappointed to see McDowell in a car that good, because I don't think he is even much better on ovals than Justin Marks. McDowell really should just be a ringer and IMSA driver in either the Prototype Challenge or GT Daytona class... Having said that, for all his greatness at IndyCar superspeedway racing, I don't think Hornish is anywhere near the stock car driver that Musgrave, Benson, T. Bodine, or ESPECIALLY Hamilton were. I think Hamilton is several steps above those other three even, and I don't think any of those three were bad... 146. Mannoroth posted: 08.28.2016 - 12:42 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) 139. Sure, 3 of them are full-time drivers (Erik Jones 3 times, Elliott Sadler and Daniel Suarez once), but Sam Hornish Jr. and Justin Marks are also regulars. They just don't run full-time and for the championship. We should consider Michael McDowell as a Buschwhacker, but he doesn't run full-time in Cup.
