RaceFanX posted: 02.25.2017 - 1:09 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The 2017 NASCAR Xfinity Series again kicks off at Daytona. Brandon Jones starts the new year off right with his first pole in the series. His new RCR teammate Daniel Hemric will take his new #21 Chevrolet out on its maiden run from the fourth starting spot. Not everything is great for the Childress team as Austin Dillon and the #2 squad got busted trying to slick up the outside of its tires with Armor All (or a similar product). The team got that set of tires confiscated by NASCAR as punishment, giving them one less set than everyone else for this race. 3. So cut-of to qualify for this race is 33rd or 32nd fastest and rest go home? NASCAR has gotten even stupider than I thought they could get and no wonder it's not fun to watch anymore. It's no thrill in even qualifying anymore either when they lock so many cars in the field. Under dog guys like Morgan Shepherd don't stand a chance 6. Tyson posted: 02.25.2017 - 2:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Stephen Leicht fails to qualify in his comeback for Obaika Racing. Mark Thompson was unable to make a lap. Car apparently just wouldn't fire up. Jamie Little reported during FS1's qualifying broadcast that NASCAR confiscated a set of tires from Austin Dillon's team prior to their qualifying run. NASCAR found an Armor All-type substance on the tires, and immediately took them. Dillon was put on the five-minute clock after the confiscation, and ultimately made a lap. The team is now down to three sets of tires (including the ones they qualified on) for the race. 7. Tyson posted: 02.25.2017 - 2:14 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @5 - it's nothing new. They've been doing this for a few years. Underdogs still have a chance. If they didn't, Kumpen and Hightower, who had to qualify on speed with no points to fall back on, wouldn't have made the race. And FWIW, Morgan Shepherd was probably going to start and park. I like Morgan, but it would've been a wasted spot in the race had he made it. 8. 1995z71 posted: 02.25.2017 - 2:22 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) I wanted Stephen Leicht to make the race but man he was a whole second slower than anyone else. 9. There are already some tracks where drivers are going into Turn 1 way above 200 mph (Michigan, Pocono, Fontana...) and it doesn't seem to be a problem, so why not Daytona and Dega? 106. stewart14rocks posted: 02.25.2017 - 5:12 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) ill wait till next week to judge this format. 107. First, as Jackie Stewart first noted all the way back in the 1970s, and most of the racing world has seen since then, and something that has been proven over the last couple of nights, is that the cars and trucks that race in NASCAR are, by far, the safest vehicles in racing. Only TWO cars in this race was not involved in any of the wrecks, and one of those (last place finisher David Starr) only lasted four laps (runner-up Kasey Kahne was the other one), and yet not one driver involved in any of the wrecks was injured in any way. I was especially pleased to see that Brandon Jones and Justin Allgaier were okay after their vicious crash in turn three, which was a similar crash to the one that killed Dale Earnhardt in 2001, but looked much, much worse. However, the cause of the wrecks, bump drafting and pushing, is something the drivers and teams have control over. Once the drivers realized that they can't bump with these particular cars, even on the straightaway, where most of the wrecks took place, they should have stopped doing so until it came to the time in the race where it was called for, and yet they continued to bump draft and push, and despite the high amount of young drivers in this race, most of the wrecks were caused by experienced drivers who should know better. Also, by winning this race, Ryan Reed made some NASCAR and Daytona history by becoming just the third non-Cup driver ever to win this race more than once. The only other non-Cup drivers to ever win the Saturday race at Daytona more than once each won it three times. Those drivers are Randy LaJoie, who won in in 1997, '99, and 2001 and Bill Dennis, who won this race three years in a row for Junie Donlavey from 1972-'74. 264. I have to be honest--although I tend to be a traditionalist with regard to NASCAR, I really like that change. I've always felt like drivers should be rewarded somehow if they run well throughout most of the race but then have a problem or get caught up in someone else's problem right at the end. I think this new format is a great way to do that. 268. It's still pretty asinine to me, it's like giving a hockey team the full two points because they have the lead through two periods, or calling the mercy rule in baseball and giving the leading team the win after 8 innings regardless of what the score is. 270. Now they can't sell out unless they remove half of their seats, or play an NCAA footbal game in the stadium. It's a damn shame NASCAR can't find some people with common sense to run the operation. I feel like the new rule changes are going to drive away more fans and dull up the racing, the races are going to be a parade up until the last 20 laps. These guys are gonna be cautious as hell, the fear of a fender bender that could end your day will rule. Almost every car that finished the race had been in one or multiple accidents, but they were still in raceable condition and there wasn't a real concern of sheet metal or other parts flying off and causing a caution or worse, injuring spectators. And with the new points system, it's not as damaging to a team to crash out of a race early - Sadler is still third in points despite finishing 24th. Teams riding around just above minimum speed 50 laps down hoping other drivers would crash out and they could pass them is one of the things I have never been a fan of. 284.
