BJ McLeod earned praise from the broadcasting team after putting up a competitive lap time, placing him 27th on the board but a full 4 tenths of a second faster than 28th place Jeremy Clements. This comes a week after Matt Mills edged his way into the second round of qualifying at Phoenix driving the 8 car for McLeod's team. For a team that has as many DNFs as races finished running, a nice run would be a welcome change this weekend. Kyle Busch and Matt Tifft were quite a bit slower than the other JGR car of Erik Jones, but it would be more surprising if the 18 & 19 weren't competitive in the race later today. Likewise, JRM only put William Byron's car in the final round of qualifying. Sadler, Annett and Allgaier will have to start from outside the top 12. More intriguing is RCR and affiliated Kaulig Racing making up half of the top 12 on the starting grid. Childress certainly brought speed to California this week, hoping to build off of Ryan Newman's Cup victory a week ago that ended their multiyear winless drought in the top series. 2. He's had two poles since, but both of them were in the #12. What the heck happened to Kyle Busch? You almost never see him fail to make the final round of Xfinity qualifying. 3. If he and his 2 teammates (Jeff Green's #8 and David Starr's #99) all finish in the Top 25 or 30, that would be a very welcome change for BJ McLeod Motorsports compared to a sweep of the last 3 finishing positions for the organization at Daytona earlier this season. 4. rm posted: 03.25.2017 - 3:34 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) They've also been plagued with mechanical failures, though they were all clear last week. Starr blew up at Daytona, Green also had engine issues there, King blew up at Atlanta, and McLeod lost an engine under caution at Vegas. McLeod had an issue with engine failures last year too, he lost an engine in a manner that could only be described as spectacular at Talladega. They seem to have an issue at the big tracks with that, McLeod's team had 5 DNFs due to mechanical failure last year and 4 of them were at 2+ mile tracks. Peck is listed as out due to engine failure last year at Atlanta but I'm pretty sure that was a start and park job. 5. MJM posted: 03.25.2017 - 3:58 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Agreed, @4. Also looked like most of the field caught the outside wall at some point during the day trying to run the high line. 21. One of those five cars is surprisingly the No. 24 JGL Racing car. They've had three different drivers, but been pretty solid. 26. And again, so close to the win, but other driver was just better. But honestly, that #22 car is most probably going to win at least that one race. It's able to lead laps, even the most laps (not like last year, when they weren't able to do even that), so it's just a matter of time, I guess. And like I said before, Kyle Busch is in his 2008-2011 mode again (he can win, but there's also some level of competition, so he sometimes finishes in the top 5 with some laps led, because others were just better). And as a Kyle Busch fan, I have no problem with it. 28. BMan0213 posted: 03.26.2017 - 12:07 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) IMO this was arguably the best race of the year so far. You're right. Kyle Busch will take nearly 3 month break from Xfinity Series, because his next race is at Michigan in the middle of June. But in the meantime, he'll make 2 starts in the Camping World Truck Series at Kansas and at Charlotte. And I don't think I've ever seen Kyle Busch not to race in Xfinity or Trucks for the whole month - he won't make a single start in lower series in April. That means 5 consecutive Cup races without some kind of extra practice (till Kansas race in Trucks). 40.
