An aero duct cover will be placed adjacent to the front nose and radiator that will go over the left and right front brake ducts to keep the brakes cooler by pumping air out over them. 2. A restrictor plate (!!) 3. The big spoiler that was on cars in last year's race at Indy. 4. A slightly larger front splitter. Whether you agree with these changes or not, they definitely add an element of intrigue to Saturday's race. 5. 95McDowellFan posted: 07.18.2017 - 10:52 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Oh yeah, this is now a plate race. And I sure do know what happened at that race, of course - Jeff Burton passing pole winner Bobby Labonte on the very first lap, then leading all 300 laps of the race, despite multiple instances of the second place car looking as if they may be able to beat Burton to the line to lead a lap, which never actually happened in the race. 9. 95McDowellFan posted: 07.19.2017 - 12:36 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @3 Really only 5 plus 4 other NXS regulars in the Cup Race, so they aren't really Buschwhackers. A pack race at a track like this I don't think is possible. It could be like the Indianapolis 500 where it's a draft fest. I also think there is a possibility of wide-open for drivers in clean air. 19. 23andJoe posted: 07.20.2017 - 10:11 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) >I hate the Xfinity series at the brickyard absolutely hate it. Miss IRP To repeat what has to be said every year... Brickyard or no Brickyard, NASCAR /couldn't/ run at IRP anymore. The track hadn't been upgraded in years, and was basically grandfather-claused when it came to modern safety requirements (that backstretch wall being Exhibit A, and we'll continue from there...). Basically, it got to the point where either they had to upgrade the track, or NASCAR had to leave. ...and IRP is owned by NHRA, for whom the oval track is a sideline, a side/show/, something they would never add now and could really care less about. So they said 'no' to the required upgrades, and NASCAR left. And, as IRP's dragstrip holds NHRA's crown-jewel event, the odds of the track being sold to someone who /would/ upgrade it are 'slim to none, Slim left town, and Slim bought a two-owner bridge in Arizona'. So IRP was destined to go away, and there is /less/ than no chance of it ever coming back, and NASCAR actually, for once, isn't to blame for either. 20. IMS could take Nationwide race from ORP: Indianapolis Motor Speedway's answer to dwindling interest in NASCAR's Brickyard 400 apparently includes acquiring the Nationwide Series race held at O'Reilly Raceway Park. IMS chief executive officer Jeff Belskus confirmed interest in hosting stock car racing's No. 2 series, which has been at ORP for 28 years. It draws an annual crowd of 30,000 the night before the 400. "Our partners have mentioned it to us," Belskus said Thursday. "We are looking for ways to invest in the Brickyard 400." Acquiring rights to the Nationwide race would bring a cash infusion to IMS, which saw attendance for last weekend's race plummet. The television revenue from hosting a Nationwide race is worth about $500,000, or about half of what's needed to offset the sanctioning fee. Increasing the IMS ticket price for Saturday -- currently $15 -- likely would cover much of the rest of the cost, but the real advantage is a bolstering of the weekend schedule. This year, IMS had two hourlong practices Friday, followed by qualifying and two practices Saturday. With Nationwide involved, IMS could showcase nearly non-stop track activity both days, which would be good for suite sales and hospitality. A Nationwide race likely would be run Saturday afternoon at a distance of 200 or 300 miles. Former IMS boss Tony George always resisted the temptation to go after the Nationwide race because he wanted to be a good neighbor to ORP and its owner, NHRA. The other conflict was the Brickyard's sponsor. Allstate, a rival insurance giant, paid upward of $2 million a year over a four-year contract. It isn't clear what ORP, which also has a Camping World Truck Series race, would do if it loses Nationwide to IMS. Belskus said a decision by his organization and NASCAR "hasn't been made yet," and it's possible Nationwide could run an additional race at ORP on a different weekend.(Indianapolis Star)(7-30-2010) Indianpolis Motor Speedway considering taking Nationwide race: UPDATE: An Indianapolis Motor Speedway spokesman Tuesday confirmed talks to bring a sports car race to the facility's road course in 2012 during NASCAR's Brickyard 400 weekend, but he said no agreement is in place. The biggest obstacle: converting the facility from a road course configuration, which would be used for a Friday endurance race of Grand-Am's Rolex Series, to an oval for NASCAR on Saturday and Sunday. NASCAR owns Grand-Am, which would bring a title sponsor to cover the sanctioning fee estimated at $200,000. Also being discussed is a move of the weekend's Nationwide Series race, which comes with a guaranteed check of about $700,000 due to the television contract, from Lucas Oil Raceway to IMS. IMS officials have been looking for ways to bolster the Brickyard weekend amid declining attendance.(Indianapolis Star)(6-15-2011) UPDATE: Officials at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and NASCAR are in serious discussions about adding a Grand-Am Rolex Series race and possibly a Nationwide Series race to the 2012 Sprint Cup weekend at the Brickyard, multiple sources confirmed Wednesday. The Nationwide race currently at O'Reilly Raceway Park would move to IMS on Saturday afternoon. A three-hour Grand-Am endurance race likely would run on Friday afternoon so as not to conflict with the Truck Series race held that night at ORP. Doug Boles, the director of public relations at IMS, could not comment on a potential Nationwide move but acknowledged discussions to bring the Grand-Am event to the weekend for a road course race are taking place. He said the track needs more than one event to give fans more value for their ticket. Officials at ORP said they have not been told that the Nationwide race will move to IMS next year, but added if that happened it would be a big blow. "If that were to happen it would definitely make us re-strategize and refocus,'' ORP general manager Wes Collier said. "This track has been here for 50 years now. It would definitely be an impact, but we'd continue on. Right now we're planning on having two events here next year.''(ESPN.com)(6-16-2011) 23. Hehe, and you want Cup drivers out of this series... If we imagine that, there are still the same names winning all the races. And winning is really, I mean really useful, when you come to Cup and figure out you don't have a chance against the level of competition there... Those Cup drivers can at least prepare you for that - if you can't beat them in Xfinity, how can you beat them in Cup, where they have elite equipment as well? I pretty miss those times that Xfinity Series regulars, who moved to Cup, were almost immediately able to run with them and beat them for their first wins in their first seasons. Can you name some nowadays drivers that came from Xfinity, got their full-time ride and almost immediately won their first Cup race fair & square? That means no fuel mileage finish, no rain delay and no Superspeedway win (equipment doesn't matter there). 26. 23andJoe posted: 07.22.2017 - 12:18 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) And the fact that The Series Formerly Known As The Busch Series is overrun by Cup drivers who use it as a warm-up, and their doing that en masse coincides with the end of the era you speak of fondly above, have absolutely nothing at all to do with that no longer being the case. Nope, not at all, no connection whatsoever. 27. Mannoroth posted: 07.22.2017 - 7:46 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) I don't think overrun is the correct world for up to 5 Cup drivers in every non-standalone race now. It was way worse 10 years ago, when half of the field were Cup drivers and almost half of them had a full-time Cup ride. But whatever, with or without the Cup drivers, those rookies will suck in Cup anyway. At least in their first full-time seasons before they figure it out like Kyle Larson. But that's not good for their amount of Cup wins, because they won't catch guys like Harvick, Kenseth or Kyle Busch easily and definitely not someone like Gordon or Johnson at this rate. Sad, but for them... 28. Danish Pie posted: 07.22.2017 - 10:27 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) The Cup leeches need to go. Plain and simple. First and foremost, in almost every case the Buschwhackers drive for the same team in both Cup and Xfinity, so that leads to having great equipment in Xfinity, where the purse money is at most 1/4th as much as the Cup side make, so the Xfinity regulars couldn't dream of having the equipment that Kyle Bush and company bring to the table. And that talk about how it helps them race and get's them used to driving with Cup guys is a bunch of crap. How can someone 20 seconds ahead of you on track help propel your career? All it does is slow your career down, cause instead of a dozen Top 5's over the course of a season that looks really good on paper and can attract the attention of some Cup owners, you get a handful of Top 10's because there are people in the race who shouldn't be. And it also helps them on the Cup side, too. The cars are so similar in how they run that it basically ends up being an additional 3-hour practice session on how to run the track. 3 hours that the other 30-something drivers in the Cup field who actually have SOME CLASS don't get. There is also the point made, like @27 alluded too, that there were a crap load more drivers who dropped down to run the Busch races 10 years ago. That is true, but the problem with that argument is that the Cup guys didn't win 95% of the races they entered like they do now. Busch guys won a good chunk of those races. So far this year, after 17 races, only 4 have been won by Xfinity regulars. Phoenix, Iowa, and Daytona twice. Daytona is a crapshoot, and Iowa had no Cup guys at all. The only race with any Cup guys was Phoenix, and that was a Dash-4-Cash race, so no drivers with more than five years of experience could run. Cup guys have won 12 of the 13 non-plate races they have ran in this year. How doesn't that not scream out to people that something needs to change? I understand that drivers are competitors and they want to win any race they can enter. But there needs to be a line drawn, especially now in the way the sport has developed into where a ton of young guys have loads of talent in both Xfinity and Truck. You couldn't convince me that William Byron and Christopher Bell aren't going to be competing for Wins and Top 5's as soon as they get into a worth while Cup car. There's too much talent moving up from the lower series of NASCAR to stifle them with Cup guys who can't stand not winning races against drivers in inferior equipment from lower series. 29. GoPM27 posted: 07.22.2017 - 11:21 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @#28 Quite frankly, I think its embarrassing when NBC puts up the Xfinity playoff grid and only three drivers have wins. To a casual or new fan, I'm sure its a put off that very few drivers going for the championship have a victory. I'd be for letting a full-time Cup driver with fewer than 50 starts race in Xfinity. Kind of like when a MLB player gets sent back down to the minors. After 50 starts, that driver is barred unless they're racing for points in Xfinity. 32. While overshooting the box is a silly error, he had a great car and could have easily backed up and made up the time. But instead the crew went to work like clowns and the CC panicked, decided that he would be better off aborting the pit stop and hoping for a yellow, and told the crew to discontinue service even though they'd readied an air hose and removed the lug nuts from the RF tire. 77. joey2448 posted: 07.22.2017 - 5:41 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Eight laps to go and Byron feels a vibration while leading! Only things i'd say is give the cars a bit more power. NASCAR has something here. Would work on tracks like MIS, Indy and Pocono with narrow grooves but it wouldn't work everywhere. 91. JSPorts posted: 07.22.2017 - 6:23 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I wouldn't be opposed to them trying it in Xfinity a lot more places, because the racing in that series is just not very good. Most of that is because there are often 2 or 3 guys who have the best cars, are the most experienced/best drivers, have the best pit crews and crew chiefs and just run away from the rest. This aero package didn't turn this race into Daytona or Talladega, but helped create an equalizing effect. 92. I don't see the harm in trying, because a lot of those intermediate races in Xfinity aren't great racing in the first place. But for sure Pocono, Indy, Michigan, Auto Club they should try it. 94. Sector posted: 07.22.2017 - 6:29 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Honestly, if everyone is curious as to how things will go, they should just go a year trying it out on all sort of tracks as possible and determine the outcome by year's end. I mean, right now, who is to say the cars today would provide better racing at Loudon than the cars back in 2000? 95. Once your tires are gone then your hanging on. Rather see guys wheel it at those places. Pocono, Texas, MIS and Indy it would work. Include Atlanta once they repave the place. Throw in CMS as well. This package could work at those places but it will not work everywhere. The future of NASCAR racing maybe not reducing downforce (which is a good thing). It maybe slowing the cars down. I'm sure the cars go faster now then they did 20 years ago. I also like that NASCAR gave the teams the ducts when they got too the track. Prevents teams from testing them. NASCAR should do that more often. 100. Eric posted: 07.22.2017 - 8:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @99, I don't think Fontana has a lot of time left before being repaved. The track surface is 20 years old and I wouldn't be surprised if it gets repaved by 2022. 101. Eric posted: 07.22.2017 - 9:28 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I love tracks with worn out surfaces, but there is a point where a race track needs to repaved. Take a look at the 2010 Daytona 500. The 2010 Daytona 500 was stopped twice for potholes. Daytona International Speedway at that time had a 31 going on 32 year old surface. Having a surface that old is bad for a race track. 102. Yes, only 5 - that's not much bigger number than 3. The level of competition wouldn't change, because the same names would win all the races. And Kyle finally led the most laps in a Xfinity Series race this season. 103. Corey posted: 07.23.2017 - 7:44 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) ^That's debateable. JSPorts stats just removes the cup drivers, but it doesn't replace them. If other drivers ran full-time in the 2, 3, 18, 20, and 22, you may see a few more winners. 104. Larson42 posted: 07.23.2017 - 11:25 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) And actually there would be 7 different winners. You didn't say NXS regulars only. You just said take out the cup stars. So I'm addition to Byron Sadler Allgaier Reed and Custer that I'm sure you're referring to, Christopher Bell and Ryan Preece would also have Xfinity wins. Preece at Loudon and Bell at Charlotte. And I know that's less than the number of realm winners there have been this season. But that number is only so high because of the rules NASCAR puts in place. It forces other drivers to race other than Busch being in 26 races. Or Larson in 25. Or whatever. It gives us a different mix of top contenders each week. I wouldn't be against getting rid of Cup guys all together for a year to try it out. But I also think the limits put in place this year have had a positive effect. 105. Mannoroth posted: 07.23.2017 - 11:25 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 103. What other drivers? Austin Dillon/Menard, Ty Dillon, Kyle Busch/Suarez, Jones and Keselowski/Logano/Blaney (plus Larson that is missing) are all Buschwhackers. You have to mean even different drivers and they definitely wouldn't finish on the same position in the elite equipment... But yes, it's definitely debateable. Just like the late seasons in Cup without the Chase. 106. Corey posted: 07.23.2017 - 12:01 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) ^JSPorts stats comes from races still influenced by Cup drivers. By either taking up seats that could have been an NXS regular or by affecting a current NXS regular's race. Cole Custer in Phoenix is a prime example. Remove the cup guys and he doesn't get a top 10, but the reason he doesn't came from his tangle with Austin Dillon. Imagine Kyle Benjamin full time in the 18 or Tyler Reddick in the 42. Both would take away some of the stats from other NXS regulars, maybe even a win or two. Heck, the 18 might have finished at Phoenix instead of crashing out on lap 11 with Suarez. It's debatable to say there would only be 5 (or 7 winners) when adding in another 4-5 guys full-time would completely change the dynamic of all the races. 107.
