Many consider Earnhardt's ride in the #96 Ford for Will Cronkrite as the break that led to his big break. Willy T. Ribbs was to drive the car in those four races but got a DUI before he was to drive it and was fired and replaced by Earnhardt. It was those four races in the #96 Ford when Earnhardt caught the eye of team owner Rod Osterlund. Osterland put Dale in one race at the end of '78 in a #98 Chevrolet and then full-time in the #2 Chevrolet/Buick/Oldsmobile in 1979. Earnhardt then won Rookie of the year in '79 and his first of seven championship in '80 before ultimately having the majority of his success for RCR in the #3 Chevrolet. 21. 00McDowellFan posted: 09.01.2017 - 3:34 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Lupton slightly changed his throwback, wonder if Dupont stepped in? 22. Not that it really matters which Cup driver wins this practice session. The only semi-interesting thing is looking at some of the throwback paint schemes, and that's not enough to sustain interest for 147 laps, as the TV ratings which come out next week will prove. Too bad, after last week's best race of the season, that we had to get back to boredom-as-usual. 44. joey2448 posted: 09.02.2017 - 5:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Gonna be 6 laps to go on this restart. Sadler has a Cale Yarborough-inspired look on his #1 this year but in the white-and-blue colors of normal sponsor Armour instead of duplicating Cale's Hardee's car exactly...like Dakota Armstong is doing in the #28.
