According to a MBM crew member on Rubbins Racin', Clinton Cram will be the crew chief for the #66 Toyota with Timmy Hill. The #35 got points from the RCR #62, #36 got points from the RCR #33, #40 got points from the CGR #48, #55 got points from the TriStar #14, #66 got point from the MBM #40 from 2017 and the #76 got points from the SS-Greenlight #07 from 2017. 2. If you'll remember, they did this contest in anticipation of attempting another race later in the year...which never really happened. In that same comment thread, Obaika said they'll bring the contest back again sometime this year for another race, so Obaika may be back in XFINITY competition at some point in 2018. I know this isn't the Cup Series drivers, but the fact that they couldn't run ONE complete green flag lap without a crash on four successive attempts is absolutely disgraceful and brings to mind something Dan Gurney once said at Indy about drivers not having the "intelligence of a flea" after the huge crash at the start of the 1966 Indianapolis 500. The fact that 32 of the last 44 laps were run under caution due to no fewer than EIGHT separate accidents, many of which came on the straightaways, is a disgrace to the sport. The last hour plus of this race also adds more weight to something I've stated for years, which is that all restarts on the plate tracks should be single file. Having single file restarts on the plate tracks won't stop all crashes from happening, but with the field more spread out and with more room to maneuver, which single file restarts would do, it certainly would reduce the chances for the kind of late race carnage that was seen in this race. 166. NewGuyOnTheBlock posted: 02.17.2018 - 9:39 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 165. You can't prevent these kinds of things from happening. The drivers are gonna be aggressive at the end of the race no matter what. Even if we go back to single file restarts at plate tracks accidents like these are still going to happen. It's just a given that, in this day and age, restrictor plate racing is gonna be a wreckfest no matter what. 167. cjs3872 posted: 02.17.2018 - 10:26 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @166, as I noted, having single file restarts on plate tracks will reduce the chances of having late-race wrecks, not eliminate the chances of having late-race crashes. Of course there are going to be wrecks. That goes without saying, but having the cars start in double file formation late in the races infinitely increases the chances of having wrecks on restarts because everyone's bunched up and there's not a place to go when you have a run, except right into the back of the car in front of you, which is why there are so many more wrecks on late-race restarts than there were when they had single-file restarts. There's a reason why, in 1994, NASCAR changed the rules and mandated single file restarts inside the last 10 laps of the race, regardless of where it took place. It was to lessen the chances of having the fiasco that took place in this race. If you start them in single file, it simply takes longer for them to get double file, allowing drivers with runs places to go with them, which in turn would have allowed then to get one racing lap in, which is all they needed to prevent this race from running 23 laps/57.5 miles over the advertised distance. And the fact that this race went so far past it's advertised distance is also why NASCAR needs to take a look at it's GWC procedure, because having unlimited GWCs also helped lead to this fiasco. What they had before, a maximum of 3 GWCs, was probably the right call for plate tracks, though if they reduced it to two, I'd have no problem with that, either. One GWC, which was the original Cup rule, was too problematic because of the stunts drivers might pull to create an incident, and thus end the race, which is a big reason why they went to 3 GWC maximum in 2010. 168. 1995 Subaru WRX STi posted: 02.17.2018 - 10:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Drivers will still find a way too screw it up CJS. over the recent years they have proven more times then not too unable too do certain things right. Many of today's drivers don't have the finesse that the drivers of bygone eras did. They're too wild and unpredictable and don't have the steady hand that the older drivers did, not many of which are left. As I mentioned in post #165, many of the drivers, as Dan Gurney once put it, sometimes don't have the judgement or the intelligence of a flea, and that's certainly a major contributing factor in all the senseless wrecks that are seen across NASCAR, especially in the plate races. One thing that seems to have been lost in recent years is something I call racecraft, the ability to judge when is the right time to make a move, and more importantly, the decision a driver makes when such a move is either inadvisable, or impossible. That's something I feel has been lost in many of the younger drivers of today. There's one other thing to factor in, something I think is frightening, and something guys like Darrell Waltrip have been weary of for years, and that is the fact that the drivers have gotten too comfortable with the fact that, if they end up crashing, that they feel they're guaranteed to walk away from the crash and immediately be back in the car as soon as possible. While the safety record of NASCAR has been amazing in the 17 years since Dale Earnhardt's fatal crash at the end of the 2001 Daytona 500, it's also given the drivers a false sense of security that they feel nothing bad can happen to them if they're involved in a crash. Of the drivers racing in this year's Daytona 500, only Kurt Busch ran in that 2001 Daytona 500 in which Earnhardt lost his life. To me, that's a big reason why today's drivers are so gung-ho at all times. They don't think anything is going to happen to them, no matter how bad a wreck they might be in. To me, that's a scary proposition for everyone on the track. 174. Anthony posted: 02.18.2018 - 5:22 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) This race should signal the permanent end of GWC at superspeedways. I'm not sure about that because I am not a race car driver, and because of that I feel sheepish talking about issues like that but what about the false sense of security that a car won't go into the crowd?! After the 2015 Austin Dillon Daytona crash I was positive that the media and fans would be going crazy talking about how dangerous these superspeedway races are for the people going to the races. I (probably) clicked on every link on Google about that Daytona race. 1 person briefly mentioned something about it, and how it was unsafe for fans. 1 person! 0 NASCAR reporters. Not only that, but I thought people for the most part would stop going to Daytona and Talladega after that. That definitely never happened. How does no one talk about this issue? I can easily see a wreck like that happening again. What happens if it does and a car or 2 lands at the same spot Austin Dillon does? I applaud NASCAR for all the safety that they have done, but if NASCAR really wanted to they could definitely reduce the speeds of these cars and make these races safer instead of races were we are just waiting for something bad to happen. 178. They never make a change until after something big happens. NASCAR is no different. Take the return of the restrictor plates, first used in the first half of the 1970s to slow the cars down at the drivers' behest. The kind of crash that resulted in NASCAR being forced to take action following the 1987 Winston 500 had been happening ever since NASCAR downsized the cars in 1981. The difference was that, in the 1987 Winston 500, the car going airborne slammed into the catch fencing, instead of tumbling in the infield. Then when flying cars became an issue again in 1993, it wasn't until after Rusty Wallace's second terrifying crash that year that NASCAR finally began to take action, coordinating with Roush to come up with the flaps, first on the roof, and then the hood. Then when four drivers lost their lives in nine months across all three of NASCAR's national series, beginning in May of 2000, NASCAR was forced to take action, but it wasn't until the fourth driver, NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt, lost his life on national TV at the 2001 Daytona 500, that action was finally taken. And Anthony (#174), if nothing else, the fiasco that the end of this race ended up being, should put an end to unlimited GWCs, which NASCAR did once before in the Truck Series at the same time they incorporated it into the other two national series. If they thought having unlimited GWCs in the Truck Series was a bad idea in 2004, then why bring that concept back for ALL of NASCAR's major series? Capping it at two or three attempts seems to be the right thing, though having just one attempt at it opens up the possibility of drivers intentionally causing mayhem to end the race in their favor, which is a big reason why they went to the 3 attempt rule in 2010. And also, the problem I had with what went down wasn't the fact that the drivers weren't going for win, because they're supposed to go for every position they can get. My problem is their lack of using good judgement. There's no good reason why they can't get one lap of racing in before causing wrecks, mostly on the straightaway, and wrecks on the straightaway are usually the result of poor judgement, because there's no good reason why racers that are supposed to be professionals can't drive in a straight line, something Dan Gurney lamented in 1966 with his "judgement of a flea" comment, and something David Hobbs lamented after the horrific crash in the first attempt to start the 1973 Indianapolis 500. 181. cjs3872 posted: 02.18.2018 - 8:14 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) @178, I agree with going back to single-file restarts, particularly at the plate tracks and the road courses, for reasons I've already mentioned. But I'm not sure about doing away with the GWC totally, if for no other reason than the fact that teams could then script the finish of a race by manufacturing a race-ending caution to benefit another one of that team's drivers. Did the fiascos at the end of the fall Richmond races in both 2011 and 2013 teach us nothing as race fans? In both cases, a team INTENTIONALLY had one of it's drivers cause a late caution so that a teammate could benefit from it (RCR in '11, MWR in '13, the latter incident resulting in the eventual downfall of an organization that just a year earlier, had seemed like one of the up-and-coming powers in the sport). 182. We will never know because NASCAR will never know either, but I hope they seriously consider advancing their timing systems. IndyCar has been measuring to the 0.0001 second for almost 20 years, so the technology is available. 206. This would be the best finish of the season for both Bacarella and the B.J. McLeod-owned #8, the team ran the 2018 season with a variety of drivers. The #8 was a Toyota here, and again at Talladega early in the season, but the crew ran Chevrolets at most races. 212. The #88 is pretty unlikely, as is the #97 with them focusing on Cup this year, and I wouldn't surprised if JP Motorsports (#45 and #55) closed Lastly, as far as I know, Morgan Shepherd has not confirmed he'll be running in 2019 223. And why would Morgan Shepherd A. be offered by a family team and B. take it when he has his own team? 227. Anonymous posted: 01.26.2019 - 2:49 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @226. I'll agree with you on that. It does sound very unrealistic for sure. There is no way nascar would clear him. However he has 1 ARCA start at talladega. He didn't even make 1 full lap at Richmond in practice before damaging the car enough to have to withdraw. 228.
