He still gets the honor as the first to sit on a pole in the series and the first to run a Chevy truck. 6. 77 Racer posted: 06.29.2013 - 12:07 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) I believe I now have that truck. Jones put his name in the record books as first ever winner of a NASCAR pickup truck race. 8. Since the trucks were unproven, and only P.J. Jones and Gary Collins had raced on pavement before, the drivers were instructed somewhat to take it easy. NASCAR specifically said they didn't want any wrecks or breakdowns in this race so the drivers took it easy in the opening laps, running side by side at times, and let loose over the final 10 laps to assure the race put on a good show. All of the team's in this race ran chrome grills in this race, something like the street versions of the trucks had at the time. The Chevy teams dropped that aspect very early on but some of the Fords, and later Dodges when they appeared, maintained that into the real deal racing in 1995. 10.
