It was also one of the last major races ever run before Saugus Speedway was shut down. 3. Butch Miller inherited the lead, only to give it up to Kenny Schrader, who went on to win. Other than the constant cautions, this was a snoozer of a race. Also there was a red flag just before halfway to clean up oil on the track. The culprit may have been Sammy Swindell. 26. Bramblegrunt posted: 01.18.2018 - 12:31 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) The mystery of why Mike Bliss not being at this race does seem even more perplexing given an interview Bliss gave at 1999's race at Evergreen (The 100th Truck Series race that offered 100,000 to the winner). Bliss was of course interviewed because he had run 99 of the 100 races, this being the race he missed. Bliss stated in the interview he was at the track and he wanted to race and was even in the pitbox during the race but he said Jim Smith "Put some other guy" in his truck (that being Gilliland) but did not expand further on this. After watching the race on Youtube, there was no mention of Bliss or why he wasnt in the race whatsoever, at least that I caught. This race itself is worth a watch if you like short track racing...like super short track racing. The track is so flat that it makes it virtually impossible to use the turns to your advantage. Brakes got eaten up since you could never use banking to ease your way into the corners. Thus, there was a lot of banging on other trucks any time you wanted to pass someone. Schrader was put in the penalty box very early in the race after what officials called payback on PJ Jones for the 3rd position. Schrader made his way up through traffic gradually through the race after that. After Skinner spun, the Cup guys of Schrader and Bodine battled it out for the win, being careful not to spin eachother out. Schrader just wouldnt be beat on this day 27. RaceFanX posted: 03.02.2018 - 12:44 pm Rate this comment: (3) (0) You saw a lot of different sponsorship packages in the early days of the Truck series when it was still mostly a cheaper short track series, for instance check out Jack Sprague's split sponsorship here between a Hooters restaurant and a Catholic church! The St. John's Catholic Church of Princeton, Wisconsin sponsored Sprague's truck in two early 1995 races at Tuscon and here at Saugus as part of a fundraising campaign it had at the time to buy a new boiler. The church successfully raised $2,500 in contributions through the deal. 28. While Fords were a staple of the exhibitions that preceded the series, and won several of them, once the Chevrolets contingent strengthened during Winter Heat the Chevy C/Ks were the ones to beat. A Ford wouldn't break through into victory lane until Joe Ruttman's win at Bristol six races later. 29. Jimnsimforever posted: 03.01.2019 - 8:43 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) @26 Actually Jim Smith didn't put Butch Gilliland in Mike Bliss's truck. Butch Gilliland ran this #06 truck in the first two races of the season as well, and Mike Bliss drove the #08 truck, both for Jim Smith. For some reason I guess Jim must've decided to only run 1 of his two trucks in this race and chose Butch. Doesn't really make sense to me because Mike Bliss was 12th in the points coming in and Gilliland was outside the top 20. Maybe before the season started Smith expected the #06 to be his top team and the #08 to be the secondary team until it ended up that Bliss performed better. All just speculation on my part. 30.
