Dave Ashley had been a staple during the exhibitions (including the 1st one, the Mesa Marin 20) but this was the only time he ran in a race after the series really started. 5. Races on short tracks, without boring ones, but filled with drama in its own way. In Mesa Marin for example there was tires' saving issue since pit stops were forbidden unless there's flat tire. And lately in the race everybody was literally sliding, trying to hold in closing laps. 13. It would remain a main entry for the team for years to come. 14. RaceFanX posted: 03.22.2017 - 8:24 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) ABC Wide World of Sports did air this race live. Paul Page and Jack Arute were in the booth with Phil Parsons in the pits. Looking back it's almost weird to have Page and Arute call a NASCAR short track race at a time when they were better known for CART. The ABC broadcast pointed out that the Trucks got their start here at Mesa Marin and Gary Collins was a factor in helping that happen. Collins ironically brought out a yellow for his spin with Steve Portenga just before they could talk about that. Ashley's one-off was a rough one. He spun twice, only one of those loops brought out a yellow, and lost a few laps because of it before calling it a day. Still kudos to Jim Smith's Ultra Wheels team for putting three trucks in the field. Roger Mears actually had a strong run in this one early. He qualified in the top-10 early and ran as high as about sixth before falling back out of contention. Bob Walker makes his second and final Truck series start. 21. RaceFanX posted: 03.22.2017 - 8:45 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This one was virtually an all-Chevrolet showdown with polesitter Mike Skinner and P.J. Jones leading early. Once Ron Hornaday, Jr. got to front it became a battle between him and friend Bill Sedgwick, driving for the Spears team Hornaday left to join DEI. Hornaday had the better truck and led the majority of the race. Jones faded way back and finished a lap down after he wore out his tires. Only Mike Bliss' late charge up to third in the #08 Ford gave the Blue Oval fans some hope. Butch Miller made a heroic charge in this one as the #98 Ford initially didn't fire up forcing him to start at the back of the pack before racing through the field to still finish in the top-5. Kerry Teague's #51 Chevrolet also had issues and nearly missed the start before they were corrected. 22. RaceFanX posted: 03.22.2017 - 8:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) After Hornaday won this race he celebrated his winning by looping a 180 in his truck and backing it into victory lane. In this era years before the rise of burnouts and donuts that was a pretty sweet celebratory move. 23. kornnut43 posted: 11.27.2018 - 9:38 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Nice - I had no idea Roger Mears ran a #25 for Rick Hendrick, 12 years before his son Casey did the same in the Cup Series. And that's one of the many reasons why this site rocks. 24. jensenators posted: 12.10.2019 - 9:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Notes based on Youtube video: TO THE BACK: 51- Teague, 98- Miller. Ross Chastain would go on to tie that mark with the number in 2012 at Bristol. 26. The trucks were sliding all over the track at the end, even Hornaday's. Great race, wish the truck series had stayed unique with an identity of its own. 27.
