It was good to see Ernie Irvan make his return to NASCAR competition this day after being on the sidelines a little over a year after his horrible injury due to a practice wreck at Michigan. Qualified on the outside pole, and led 24 laps in this race until the suspension failed on his truck. It wouldn't be the only outstanding performance he would make on this weekend, as he qualified 7th for the Cup race and even led 31 laps on his way to finishing 6th. Talk about a comeback! 9. They even had Larry McReynolds working on the truck. Irvan was impressive early but used his stuff up and the last 20-25 laps of the first run Irvan was junk and fell from the lead to 7th before mishap. Kenny Wallace was strong. He got the lead from Jack Sprague and looked like everything was going in his direction but as soon as Wallace took the lead he brought out a caution flag after blowing a right front tire. He stayed on the lead lap but he lost all his track position. Mike Bliss' crew chief for this race was Barry Dodson, who was really kind of new to the truck deal. He said they sorta guessed on the setup of this truck and got lucky. "Lucky my foot," as Winston Kelly said on MRN. Also Geoff Bodine was DOMINATE early on the race. He led the first segment by a whole lot and put everyone but the top 10 a lap behind but after the halfway break Bodine wasn't nearly as good and contact between him and Jack Sprague sent Bodine spinning and he could never get to the front from that point forward. Sprague also had a bit of damage as the fender laid on the tire and according to Sprague he couldn't turn the truck left like he could have before. He ended up fourth. One of the most surprising things of the day was when Darrell Waltrip struggled so badly early on. He started third and felt good about his truck prior to the event. He fell like a rock early on, losing three laps and falling to 28th before the halfway break. He was able to get a lap back but lost too many spot early on to do anything. As mentioned in a prior post, Ron Hornaday Jr's made a big error. In 1995 in the truck series the only time you could change tires was at the half way point and you had to start the race on the tires you qualified. Hornaday's team went with tires that had some wear on them for qualifying. But since the tires he qualified on had 55 laps on, Goodyear and NASCAR told them they could not use those tires because they would not be able to handle the 55 laps + the 75 laps in the first segment. They had to change the tires, but NASCAR had Dave Marcis scuff tires for the team in Winston Cup practice because Hornaday would have had an advantage if they stuck new tires on the truck. So after Winston Cup practice Hornaday's team bolted the tires Marcis scuffed on and they went to the rear of the field. After all that, they still finished 5th. 20. He'd go on to race full time for the team in 1996. 21. Corey posted: 12.08.2018 - 11:44 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Mike Bliss was the youngest winner of the 1995 season at the age of 30.
