The wreck brought out the red flag. This race was run on a Cup off weekend with the event airing on TNN as part of a motorsports doubleheader with the All-Pro series traditional All-American 400 at Nashville. The events ran over and RaceDay with Rick Benjamin was not aired. 2. RaceFanX posted: 02.26.2009 - 10:38 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Last major NASCAR race for Mike Hurlbert. It was doubly good for Walker, his new teammate to close out the season Butch Miller finished 6th in his other Truck Miller had been removed from Liberty Motorsports' famous #98 Ford to make room for the team's new 1997 driver Kenny Irwin Jr a race earlier. After doing a one-off for Ernie Irvan at Sonoma, Miller finished the season for Walker. 6. The Butler / McCray crashed happened on the backstretch when Tobey's Ken Schrader-fielded AC-Delco #52 broke and slowed right against the wall with a drivetrain issue. Most of the field went low and missed him only for McCray to hug the outside wall and rnu right into the back of Butler at nearly full speed, Lance Norick was also involved as he spun his #90 to avoid serious contact with McCray. McCray's red, white and blue #02 Chevy can to a stop against the wall as Butler's #52 spun to the inside across the track from the momentum trailing fire from the fuel cell being crushed in the impact. Butler was mostly unhurt but complained of some back pain afterward while McCray needed some assistance from the safety crew to get out of his truck. It also took a few minutes to put out the fire on Tobey's truck. Oddly after the red flag flew Kenny Hendrick had some sort of issue with his #32 Chevrolet. It might have been a fire under the hood but whatever it was he got some assistance and went on to finish the race. Nice to see Walker Evans run so good in this one, it turned out to be his penultimate NASCAR race before retirement. 7. 83andJoe posted: 07.07.2013 - 4:33 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) To the rear: Kenny Irwin Jr. (#98) driver change #53 crew chief: Lizard Finegra (same for all 1996 races) #11 sponsor: Bud Light #65 sponsor: AAG Racing First caution: #65 spin turn 3 Second caution: #9 spin turn 1 Third caution: #53 accident turn 3 Fourth caution: #90 spin turn 4 Fifth caution: competition Sixth caution: #2 spin turn 3 Seventh caution: #2, #25, #20 accident turn 3 Eighth caution: #22 accident backstretch Ninth caution: debris turn 1 Tenth caution (Lap 162-164): #28, #72 accident turn 4 Eleventh caution: #52, #02, #90 accident backstretch Twelvth caution: Competition Thirteenth caution: #17, #19 accident turn 3 Fourteenth caution: debris turn 4 8. nascar_vd / racing-reference.info posted: 04.24.2018 - 11:35 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) C1996-22 Awards Busch Pole Award: Ron Hornaday, Jr. Gatorade Front Runner Award: Ron Hornaday, Jr. Plasti-Kote Winning Finish Award: Rich Burgess (#3) Ventvisor Brand Super Deflector Award: Ron Hornaday, Jr. Featherlite Trailers Long Haul Award: Mike Skinner Cintas Rookie-Of-The-Race Award: Doug George 9. In the Cup series it was fun to watch them go after the Gatorade halftime leader money or the see who got saddled with the Goody's Headache Award. 10. At the start of the broadcast Eli Gold says "We are live at Mesa Marin Raceway in Bakersfield California on a simply magnificent Sunday afternoon." Wikipedia has these last 2 race dates wrong too. Do the official record books have them wrong or something? 12. Rich posted: 09.21.2020 - 5:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Eli Gold and Larry McReynolds were the commentators. Per the broadcast, Eli Gold announced that the caution was out just prior to McCray running into Butler. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
