It was the first running of the nation's highest level stock car series at the greatest oval in the world, of course everyone and their mother wants to be in the field. 16. RaceFanX posted: 09.27.2016 - 10:47 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) NASCAR also made Winston West drivers eligible for points in their series at that race in 1994 to encourage them to make the trek, making even more entries. 17. RaceFanX posted: 09.27.2016 - 11:10 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The Truck's last roundup of the 1997 season came down to a fuel mileage showdown on one the biggest tracks the series ran at the time. Rick Carelli came into this race winless for the season and gambled at the end trying to get that elusive victory. The High Plains Drifter gave it his all but the #6 Re/Max Chevy ran dry with three laps to go. Carelli's issues handed the lead to Joe Ruttman who had an uneventful run over the last three laps on the way to victory lane. The victory was the career-high fifth of the season for Ruttman, he bookended the season with wins in the opener at Disney and the finale at Vegas. He won two races in a row to cap off the season...and won two races in 1997 as a result of an opponent in a Chevy running out of fuel at the end. Sprague clinched his first of three Truck series titles just by starting this race. It was far from a freebie weekend for the #24 Quaker State Chevy effort though, Jack won the pole and finished runner-up in the race itself. Butch Gilliland won the Winston West title in a race at Las Vegas the night before this race and followed it up by running this race, claiming top-20 runs in both races. This was his only Truck race in a Chevrolet and his only one of 1997. 18. Tylor Thaber posted: 09.27.2016 - 12:17 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @18 I'd say it's the greatest oval in the world (how many ovals are there even outside the States?), but by no means is it the greatest track in the world (what that is is for you to decide, in my opinion it would be Macau...but again, my opinion). 20. chevyfan98 posted: 09.27.2016 - 3:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "1998 Daytona 500: 57 entries 2016 Daytona 500: 44 entries" 2007 Daytona 500: 61 entries 2013 Daytona 500: 45 entries (for a 43 car field) 21.
