Jack Sprat got spun by a lapped truck coming off turn 4 and nearly flipped in the infield grass. 4. most posted: 12.08.2007 - 3:46 am Rate this comment: (1) (1) Yeah, Sprague got some major air in that truck! This was back when a spin or crash meant you couldn't win, now many people spin and win.... Not sure why it seems that way... 5. With Rezendes in the #2, regular driver Mike Bliss runs a second truck for Bliss in this event, the #1, perhaps Smith's first ever entry with the number that would win him a title 6. He was injured and started the next race at Bristol in a second truck with the number 1 and got Dave Rezendes to fill in for the #2. I guess Jim Smith didn't want to jeopardize the #2's owner's points in case Bliss couldn't run the whole race, but still wanted Bliss to have a chance to stay in the fight for the driver's championship. Funny how Bliss won at Milwaukee, the race after Bristol. 10. sk posted: 04.21.2013 - 12:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Motorsports veteran Dominic Dobson's best finish in a NASCAR race. 11. 83andJoe posted: 06.24.2013 - 8:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Correction for the webmaster: starting at this race through the rest of 1998, Freddy Fryar was NOT crew chief for the #43 Dodge; he was released by Petty Enterprises prior to this race. He was crew chief for the team in the previous races this year, however. 12. 83andJoe posted: 06.24.2013 - 8:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Further to the above, at this particular race, the #43 team didn't have an officially named crew chief, however Richard Petty oversaw team operations at this event personally. 13. 83andJoe posted: 07.06.2013 - 5:05 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #5 crew chief: Cal Northrop 14. This win, his penultimate one in the series, was the only one of those victories that didn't come on a short track. 17. Bramblegrunt posted: 01.10.2018 - 7:17 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) This race was brutal for crashes. The initial incident between Walters, Bliss, Said and Biffle injured Bliss and banged up Walters. Jay Sauter had the early lead but after trying to lap Dobson on the backstretch, Sauter made slight contact with him and pancaked the wall, ending a shot at a win. Still salvaged a top 20. Single truck crashes of Reffner and Hensley around turn 1 and Fellows off turn 4 (who recovered despite damage for a top 10) further slowed the pace of the race. The 2nd half of the race saw less carnage initially but early contenders Randy Tolsma and Ron Hornaday both retired after mechanical issues. But things got real interesting up front when leaders Jack Sprague and Greg Biffle approached the lapped truck of Rob Morgan. Sprague let off the gas a bit to pass Morgan and Biffle did not lift as much sending Sprague for a wild ride in the infield, but suffered no major damage. This bunched the field back up. Biffle, looking to recover from 2 incidents up to this point hoping to claim his first win had relinquished the lead to fellow rookie Wayne Anderson after the Sprague contact. On the restart Anderson lost the lead to Raines and Anderson fell into the clutches of the rest of the pack where disaster struck on the backstretch exactly as the race started, with a rookie losing it off turn 2, this time it was Anderson. Anderson spun collecting Biffle, who was on his outside. Toby Porter having a great run in the Tyler Jet #17 piled into the nose of Anderson. Meanwhile Biffle spun into the oncoming Mike Wallace, basically ending all their nights. With the shortened field from all the crashes, Raines was able to hold off a hungry Andy Houston who was looking for his first victory but it was not to be, Raines was faster and took the victory. TNN also had Tony Stewart in the booth who was on pole for the IRL race the following night 18.
