Tom Hubert has a great run spoiled by a blown engine. 2. Compton basically just kept his nose clean. Same goes for Cook, both of them were running between 4th-7th all race. That August was great for Cook. Hensley got 3rd, although he was easily faster than Cook, he decided to be fair and not dump him when he had the chance to do so. Hornaday, unsurprisingly was an idiot and kept trying to wreck people. Mostly Fellows and Sauter. 3. When they let Bryan Reffner go they also let crew chief Les Back go. Crew chief for the #48: Brian Pattie, Joe Nemecheck sent his Busch Series crew chief and some crew members out to help Ron Fellows. Brian Pattie was the crew chief all of the 98 season on Nemechecks #87 Busch car and had won a race with Fellows at Watkins Glen earlier in the year. Bob Keselowski in the 29 truck pulled in the pits under the first caution and Tommy Archer finished out the race. Archer led a couple laps and brought the truck home with a top 10 finish. Bryan Reffner relief drove in the #26 truck for Randy MacDonald as well on a day where it was over 100 degrees in Topeka. Mike Wallace had problems with his truck mid race and sat in the shade while being interviewed with his shirt off, showing off an epic farmers tan. This was the first road race in the Truck Series where they had no halftime and live pit stops instead. During caution in the series though you were only able to change 2 tires. It made for some interesting strategies. Teams decided to either pit under green so they could change all 4, or under caution and change one side then on the next change the other sides 2 tires, or some came under caution and changed the 2 rear tires intead of one side or the other. 4. While Boris Said and Tom Hubert both contended for the win here Stacy Compton's victory ultimately broke the streak..with this ultimately turning out to be Compton's final Truck series win. Said would break through for his first Truck win the next time the series went somewhere where the road got twisty at Sonoma later in the year. 5.
